234: Chapter 234 DecisionTaylor’s system began to generate something she had never seen before.

It was not a fusion, not a juxtaposition, not a dialogue. It was a simultaneous layering of three, four, or five layers of sound—fragments from different times, different materials, and different sources, woven together in an extremely complex way to form a brand-new, indivisible ”whole.”

When it first appeared, Taylor thought the system had malfunctioned.

It was a sound lasting about forty seconds. The bottom layer was a recording of ocean waves she had input a year ago, pressed extremely low, barely audible, where only the rhythmic rise and fall could be felt. The middle layer was the ”bench” ambient sound of Alex, stretched to three times its original length, the quacking of wild ducks turned into some strange, long sigh. The top layer was that sentence from the old lady, ”Heard it for the first time, cried,” cut into dozens of extremely short fragments, scattered like raindrops throughout the forty seconds. The outermost layer was a melody she had never heard before, sounding like an instrument and also like a human voice, appearing and disappearing, as if it had grown out of the cracks between all these sounds.

After listening, Taylor was stunned for a long time.

She checked the material library—that ”never-heard-before melody” was not in the library. It was generated by the system itself, creating its own sounds with everything it had learned.

”Alex.”

Alex came over from the study, stood behind her, and listened to the forty seconds.

After listening, he was silent for a long time.

”It is speaking,” he finally said.

Taylor’s voice was very soft: ”Saying what?”

Alex shook his head: ”Can’t understand. But it is speaking. Using everything it has heard to speak its own words.”

The forty seconds played on a loop. Waves, bench, the old lady’s fragments, that melody that grew on its own, layer upon layer, like an architectural structure of sound.

Taylor did not record this piece. She just let it be there, let the system continue running, let this sound become part of the system’s history.

”If one day it’s gone,” she suddenly said, ”will these things still exist?”

Alex thought for a moment: ”Yes. It’s just that no one will hear them again.”

”Then do they still count as existing?”

Alex looked at the looping waveform on the screen, silent for a long time.

”Yes,” he said, ”existence does not need to be heard. Existence only needs to have happened.”

The special topic for that journal officially launched.

The Young Analyst received an invitation to the first online planning meeting—again forwarded anonymously by the project team. Meeting link, time, agenda, all participants used codenames. Her codename was ”The Fourth Article.”

On the day of the meeting, she opened the link ten minutes early and entered the virtual meeting room. Two avatars were already lit up on the screen, no names, only codenames. One was ”Desert Night Watcher,” the other was ”Pacific Whale.”

She didn’t speak, just listened.

”Desert Night Watcher” spoke first. It was an aged voice, very slow, like stone polished by wind and sand: ”The piece I wrote, have you read it?”

”Pacific Whale” replied: ”Read it. That part where the tent was blown away, I laughed a little.”

”Desert Night Watcher” was silent for a few seconds, then laughed too: ”I thought it was a disaster at the time. Now I think it was the best night of my life.”

A third person joined. The codename was ”3:17 AM.”

The Young Analyst’s heart skipped a beat.

That voice was older, but very clear: ”I’m here. One minute late. The coffee is cold.”

The meeting room was quiet for a few seconds, then someone laughed. It was that kind of light, sigh-like laugh.

”Desert Night Watcher” said: ”You are that cup of cold coffee.”

”3:17 AM” replied: ”I am.”

They began to discuss the structure of the special topic, the direction of the commissioned articles, and the perspectives that needed to be added. The Young Analyst didn’t speak, just listened. Listening to ”Desert Night Watcher” talk about the starry sky in Chile, listening to ”Pacific Whale” talk about the forty-day drift, listening to ”3:17 AM” talk about that curve that drops 0.0003 Hz every year.

As the meeting was about to end, ”3:17 AM” suddenly said: ”Is The Fourth Article here?”

The Young Analyst was stunned for a moment, then turned on the microphone: ”I’m here.”

”3:17 AM” was silent for a few seconds, then said: ”The piece you wrote saved me three years. I have always wanted to say thank you in person.”

The Young Analyst opened her mouth, not knowing what to say. After a long time, she said one sentence:

”The cup is still there.”

”3:17 AM” did not respond immediately. After another few seconds, that aged voice laughed softly:

”That’s good.”

The meeting ended. The Young Analyst sat at the computer, staring at the screen that had already gone black, not moving for a long time.

It wasn’t raining outside. But her coffee was cold.

In the nursing home, Kim Soon-ja made a decision.

That afternoon, she moved her wheelchair to Eileen’s side as usual, and placed her hand on the back of Eileen’s hand as usual. Eileen’s fingers moved slightly, and fell on the back of her hand as usual.

Then Kim Soon-ja spoke.

She said a sentence in Korean. Very long, very slow, as if she had rehearsed it in her heart for a long time.

The caregiver next to them didn’t understand, and hurried to find the Korean-American caregiver. When the Korean-American caregiver arrived, Kim Soon-ja had already finished speaking and was looking at Eileen, waiting for her reaction.

Eileen had no reaction. Her eyes were still looking at the curtains.

The Korean-American caregiver asked Kim Soon-ja softly: ”What did you just say?”

Kim Soon-ja didn’t look at her, still looking at Eileen. After a long time, she said in Korean:

”I said, my name is Kim Soon-ja. I am eighty-seven years old. I came to the United States forty years ago. I have no family. But I come here every afternoon and put my hand on your hand. I don’t know if you can hear me. But I want you to know that someone is here.”

The caregiver translated for the colleague next to her. After listening, the colleague’s eyes turned red.

Eileen still had no reaction.

But her hand, on the back of Kim Soon-ja’s hand, moved again.

Not a grip. It was a gentle lift, then it fell back to its original place. As if saying: I know.

Kim Soon-ja felt it. She didn’t speak, just looked at that hand stacked on the back of her own hand, looking for a long time.

That evening, The caregiver found Kim Soon-ja teaching Eileen to say a sentence at a very slow speed.

That sentence was very short, only two syllables. Kim Soon-ja said it once, waited a while, then said it again. Eileen’s lips moved, unable to make a sound, but she was trying.

The caregiver later asked the Korean-American caregiver what those two syllables meant.

The Korean-American caregiver thought for a moment and said:

”She is saying ’Hello’.”

”In Korean?”

”In Korean.”

The caregiver looked at the two old ladies, one teaching slowly, one learning slowly. The sunset shone in from the window, stretching their figures long.

No one knew if Eileen could learn it. Maybe she would never learn it.

But someone was teaching. Someone was learning. Someone was waiting.

In the evening, Alex and Taylor sat on the balcony.

Taylor told about that forty-second ”composite gift.” Alex told about the special topic planning meeting, and that sentence ”The cup is still there.”

”She said it?” Taylor asked.

”She said it.”

”He responded?”

”He laughed. Said ’That’s good’.”

Taylor was silent for a while, then said: ”That cup, it’s not just yours now.”

Alex looked at her.

”It has become something between them,” Taylor said, ”You are just holding it for the time being.”

Alex thought for a moment and nodded.

A siren wailed in the distance—long, short, long, short, long, short, long, short.

Taylor suddenly asked: ”Do you think the two old ladies in that nursing home will be able to speak in the end?”

Alex thought for a moment: ”I don’t know. But someone is teaching, someone is learning, someone is waiting. That is enough.”

”Enough for what?”

”Enough to make that ’afternoon’ exist.”

The night wind was very light. The balcony was very quiet.

That old coffee cup was on the desk, reflecting a little light.

Like a small signal that had always been there waiting.
