235: Chapter 235 The Night of Writing and the First SyllableTaylor Swift’s system began generating something she couldn’t explain.

It wasn’t an overlay of sounds, not a fusion, not a dialogue. It was ”absence.”

Day 103’s gift: A two-minute gift, the first minute and fifty seconds were silent. Only an extremely low, almost imperceptible background hum, like someone breathing in the distance. In the final second, a fragment of sound appeared — the last character of Grandma’s sentence ”First time I heard it, I cried,” the ”cried.” Just that one word, then it ended.

Day 107’s gift: One minute and thirty seconds, all silence. The final five seconds were the wild duck calls from Alex’s ”bench” ambient sound, processed to sound extremely distant, as if transmitted from another world.

Day 112’s gift: A full three minutes, nothing. Taylor Swift thought the system had failed and was about to check when, in the final second, a very soft, almost inaudible breath appeared — it was her own breath, accidentally recorded by the system a long time ago.

She recorded all of these and listened to them repeatedly.

”What is it saying?” she asked Alex.

Alex listened to those three segments of silence and was silent for a long time.

”It is speaking of absence,” he finally said. ”Those things that are not there. Those things that were once there, but are now absent. Those things that can never appear again.”

Taylor Swift looked at the screen: ”But it used that last second to make them appear.”

”Yes,” Alex said. ”Because it knows they were once there. It remembers.”

Taylor Swift was silent for a long time.

Then she said softly: ”It remembers me better than I remember myself.”

The Young Analyst began writing her first draft.

She decided on the title herself: 《After the Fourth Log》.

She wrote about how that log came to be — that rainy night, after she had read the first three, she felt for the first time that she was sitting in the same room with a group of strangers. She wrote about how the sentence ”He made me use three years less” appeared on the screen — she hadn’t been thinking at the time, her fingers had just moved on their own. She wrote about the day of the annual meeting, when that log was projected onto the screen, and she sat in the corner, head down, pretending to read her notebook.

She wrote about how she felt the day she received the journal invitation — not excitement, but a strange sense of unreality, as if someone had recognized her from very far away.

She wrote about that planning meeting, about her heartbeat when ”3:17 AM” asked her ”Is the fourth one there,” and the few seconds of silence after she said ”The cup is still here.”

She wrote about that cup — she didn’t know what it was, but she knew it was something important. What was important wasn’t the cup itself, but that someone was using the cup to tell her: You can continue.

Finally, she wrote:

”I still don’t know who ’3:17 AM’ is. I don’t know who the ’Desert Night Watcher’ is. I don’t know who the ’Whale of the Pacific’ is. We will never meet, and we will never know each other’s names.”

”But I know they are listening. They are writing too. They are waiting for me to finish this.”

”Is this enough?”

”It is enough.”

She finished writing the last word, and it was already 3:00 AM. The city outside the window was very quiet, with cars passing by occasionally.

She stood up, went to the kitchen, and brewed a cup of coffee. She waited for it to cool.

When it was cool enough to drink, she picked it up and, facing the night outside the window, said softly:

”Thank you for listening.”

No one answered.

But the city outside the window was still making those sounds.

In the nursing home, that moment happened very suddenly.

That afternoon was the same as usual. Kim Soon-ja moved the wheelchair next to Irene and placed her hand on Irene’s. Irene’s fingers moved slightly and landed on the back of Kim Soon-ja’s hand. The setting sun shone through the window, stretching their shadows long.

Then Irene spoke.

It wasn’t a syllable, not just moving lips, but a real, clear word.

She said:

”An — ning —”

Korean. Hello.

Kim Soon-ja froze. She looked at Irene, and Irene looked back at her. There was something in Irene’s eyes that she had never seen before — not clarity, not recognition, but a very soft light, like someone just waking up.

Kim Soon-ja squeezed her hand and replied in Korean: ”An-ning. I am here.”

Irene didn’t speak again. Her eyes slowly turned back toward the curtains, and that light slowly dimmed.

But her hand remained on the back of Kim Soon-ja’s hand.

The caregivers later played that surveillance footage repeatedly. They counted; from the day Kim Soon-ja began teaching ”An-ning” to the day Irene said it for the first time, it took a total of thirty-seven days.

Thirty-seven days, every afternoon, Kim Soon-ja placed her hand on Irene’s hand, said ”An-ning” once, waited a while, then said it again. Sometimes Irene’s lips moved, sometimes they didn’t.

That afternoon, thirty-seven days later, she said it.

A Korean-American caregiver later asked Kim Soon-ja: ”How did you know she could learn it?”

Kim Soon-ja thought for a moment and said slowly in Korean:

”I didn’t know. But I was here.”

At night, Alex and Taylor Swift sat on the balcony.

Taylor Swift talked about those three ”gifts of absence.” Alex talked about the Young Analyst’s draft and Irene’s ”An-ning.”

”Thirty-seven days,” Taylor Swift repeated softly. ”She taught for thirty-seven days.”

”Mm.”

”And then she said it.”

”Mm.”

Taylor Swift was silent for a moment, then said: ”Will my system wait that long too?”

Alex looked at her: ”What is it waiting for?”

Taylor Swift thought for a moment: ”For me to understand those absences it speaks of.”

Alex didn’t speak. He just reached out and took her hand.

A siren wailed in the distance — long-short, long-short, long-short, long-short.

Taylor Swift suddenly asked: ”Do you think that SPO-α has ever waited for anything?”

Alex thought for a long time.

”Perhaps it is waiting for that line to drop to a certain value,” he said. ”Perhaps it is waiting for something it doesn’t know to respond to it. Perhaps it isn’t waiting for anything at all, just continuing to broadcast.”

”Then how long has it been waiting?”

”Tens of thousands of years. Maybe hundreds of thousands of years.”

Taylor Swift leaned on his shoulder, looking at the darkness in the distance.

”Then how much longer will it have to wait?”

Alex shook his head: ”I don’t know. Perhaps forever.”

The night breeze was light. The balcony was very quiet.

That old coffee cup was on the desk, reflecting a bit of light.

Taylor Swift suddenly said: ”That cup, are you planning to use it?”

Alex thought for a moment: ”Waiting for a night that needs cooling.”

”When is that?”

”I don’t know. Waiting for it to come.”

In the distance, the siren sounded again — long-short, long-short, long-short, long-short.

They were still listening.
