230: Chapter 230 Listening in the WardTaylor had waited nine days for that ”machine voice” she had fed into the system.

It was a dry, emotionless voice synthesis—excerpts from the ”notes on understanding the system” she had recently compiled, generated using the most basic speech engine, without any added effects or emotional inflection, like an instruction manual being read out word by word.

Alex went to the studio every day to check on the progress. On the evening of the eighth day, he walked in carrying two cups of coffee, and found Taylor staring blankly at the screen.

”Still no movement?”

”None.” Taylor took the coffee but didn’t drink it. ”I’m wondering if it doesn’t care about this kind of sound at all. It’s too dry, lacks any warmth, and isn’t the kind of material it’s used to.”

Alex sat down beside her, watching the jumping parameter curves. ”Have you considered that maybe it needs more time to process it? It took six days for your a cappella because a cappella has similarities to the material it already has. But this machine voice—it might have never heard this kind of sound before. It needs to learn how to ’listen’ to it first.”

Taylor paused. ”Learn how to listen?”

”Just like when you first listened to SPO-α, all you heard was a bunch of noise. Later, you gradually learned to distinguish its rhythm, its windows, and its drift. It wasn’t that it changed; it was that your way of listening changed.” Alex took a sip of coffee. ”The system is the same. It doesn’t have ears, but it has rules. Your machine voice entering its rule system might be a completely new input type, and it needs time to adjust those rules before it can place it alongside other things.”

Taylor looked at him, her eyes holding something complex. ”How do you come up with these thoughts?”

Alex smiled. ”Because I think about similar things every day. SPO-α broadcasts in a way that hasn’t changed for ten thousand years, and it took us years to learn to hear its 0.0003 Hz drift. It wasn’t that it changed; it was that we finally learned to listen for that change.”

On the afternoon of the ninth day, Alex was in the study handling emails when Taylor’s voice came from the studio, trembling with irrepressible excitement: ”Alex! Come quick!”

He put down his laptop and ran over. Taylor pointed at the screen. The system was running at the sixty-third minute, and after a window of silence, a sound appeared in the gift location.

It was her machine voice—but stretched three times longer, the pitch lowered by two octaves, mixed with the a cappella fragments she had fed in before, mixed with fragments of Bach, and mixed with the remnants of Grandma Lupe’s lullabies. Everything was kneaded together like pulp soaked in water, slowly reshaping itself.

The sound that formed was no longer machine, nor was it human. It was something in between, using a way in between, speaking a language in between.

Alex stood behind Taylor, watching the waveform on the screen and listening to the sound playing on a loop.

”It is responding to you,” he said.

”But how does it know this is ’my’ voice?” Taylor’s voice was very soft. ”My a cappella and this machine voice are completely different.”

Alex thought for a moment. ”Perhaps it doesn’t distinguish between ’you’ and ’your voice.’ Everything you feed in is marked by it as the same source—’Taylor.’ It tries to put these things together to see what they have in common. Then it uses those commonalities to generate something new.”

Taylor looked at the screen, silent for a long time.

Then she said softly, ”It knows me better than I know myself.”

Alex didn’t speak. He just gently pressed her shoulder.

On the screen, that sound continued to loop. Like someone very far away, trying to learn to speak like her in a very slow way.

The nurses at the nursing home remembered that day.

Around three in the afternoon, a man in his fifties walked in, holding a mobile phone. He walked to the door of Room 203, but didn’t go in immediately, instead standing outside the door and taking a few deep breaths.

The room housed an old lady who hadn’t really recognized people for eight years. She didn’t speak, didn’t smile, resisted when it was time to take medicine, and stared blankly after taking it. The caregiver turned her over, cleaned her, and fed her every day, like taking care of a living sculpture.

The man pushed the door open and went in. The old lady sat in her wheelchair, staring blankly out the window. The curtains were drawn; there was nothing outside the window.

The man crouched down beside her, took out his phone, and played a recording.

The recording contained an elderly Korean female voice saying a sentence.

The man held the phone up to the old lady’s ear.

The old lady didn’t move. Her eyes were still fixed on the curtains.

The recording finished. The man waited.

One minute. Two minutes. Three minutes.

The old lady suddenly moved her lips.

The man brought the phone closer and recorded that sound—very faint, like a baby trying to make a sound for the first time, like a long-unused tool trying to turn for the first time.

When the nurse rushed in, the man was still crouching there, holding the phone to the old lady’s ear, playing the recording over and over. Every time it played, the old lady’s lips moved. The movement grew larger, large enough for the nurse to see—she was trying to speak.

”She hasn’t spoken in three years.” The nurse’s voice was trembling.

The man didn’t turn back. He continued to play the recording, over, and over, and over again.

The old lady’s lips finally produced a sound. Not a word, just a syllable. But that was her first syllable in three years.

The man stood up and handed the phone to the nurse. ”Could I trouble you to play it for her once a day? Just this one sentence. Any time is fine. Once a day is enough.”

The nurse took the phone and looked at the title of the recording, which had only a few words: ”Wake up and get up, the sun is waiting for you.”

Alex read about this in the weekly report from the community soundscape project team.

There was a small section in the weekly report, recorded by the project team while they were translating letters from the Korean-American Grandmother: ”Mr. James called to inform us that his aunt’s condition has improved, and she is now occasionally able to produce syllables. He specifically thanked ’the person on the phone’ and asked us to forward a new photo.”

The photo was attached: a picture of James and his aunt, with his aunt sitting in a wheelchair, her face toward the camera, her lips slightly parted, as if trying to say something.

Alex looked at the photo and remembered many things. He remembered the sound of the Korean-American Grandmother when she first recorded the sentence, ”I heard it for the first time, and I cried.” He remembered the calmness in her voice when she recited, ”I can’t hear very clearly now, but I still remember.” He remembered the sentence she said to a stranger on the phone, ”Wake up and get up, the sun is waiting for you.”

He replied to the project team with an email: ”Organize this story and put it into the ’Listening Map.’ It doesn’t need to be too long. Let those who click on it know that some sounds can make people speak again.”

Then he thought for a moment and added another sentence: ”Ask Mr. James if he is willing to include his aunt’s ’that sound’ as well. Even if it’s just a syllable. That is also a sound.”

The annual meeting of Team K, for the first time in the form of a video connection, had an extra ”virtual participant” sitting in the front row.

On the screen was the face of the retired person in charge. He had aged six years, his hair was completely white, but his eyes were still the same, looking at the conference room on the screen as if looking at a group of his own children.

Alex sat in the corner of the conference room in his capacity as a special consultant. He had no speaking seat and didn’t need to report, but he came every year. In his own words: ”I want to see if the people listening to that signal have changed this year.”

The first agenda item of the annual meeting, just like last year, was: collectively reading anonymous logs.

The sixth entry was projected onto the screen—written by the kid who had joined three months ago, about that cup of cold coffee, about ”I am waiting for that day.”

After the projection was read, the conference room was silent for a few seconds.

Then the retired person in charge on the screen spoke. His voice was slower than six years ago, but very clear:

”The ’author of the first entry’ mentioned in that log is me.”

The people in the conference room looked at the screen in unison.

He continued: ”3:17 AM, raining, the coffee is cold. That was written by me. I never thought that someone would choose to come here because of those few words. I also never thought that today, six years later, I could sit here and see what the person who read the words I wrote looks like.”

He paused and looked toward a corner in the back of the conference room—where the Young Analyst was sitting.

”The one you wrote, the fourth entry, I read it too. ’He saved me three years.’ You saved me three years.”

The Young Analyst was stunned. She opened her mouth, not knowing what to say.

The old man on the screen smiled: ”No need to speak. I just wanted you to know that the words you wrote are also read by someone. Not one hundred and twenty-five years later, but now.”

He turned to the entire conference room: ”Everyone present, regardless of whether you have written logs or how long you have been with the project—someone is watching what you are doing now. Someone will remember the time you save now. In the room you are sitting in now, one hundred and twenty-five years later, someone will open those logs and read about everything that happened here today.”

He paused, his voice softening:

”They will know that we once existed like this.”

The conference room was silent for a long time.

Alex sat in the corner, looking at that aged face on the screen, remembering his feelings when he first read that ”3:17 AM” entry six years ago. At that time, he had just come into contact with Team K and didn’t know how far this project would go. Now, six years later, that frequency drift line had slanted down a little bit more. Among those who wrote the logs, some had retired, some were still here, and some had just joined.

He suddenly realized that he was also a part of this ”existence.”

After the annual meeting ended, Alex sent a private email to the retired person in charge. It only had one sentence:

”That cup of cold coffee, I drank it for you. It was bitter.”

A few minutes later, he received a reply:

”Bitter is right. Sweet wouldn’t be like it.”

In the evening, Alex and Taylor sat on the balcony.

Taylor talked about what that ”machine voice” had turned into. Alex talked about the story of the nursing home, that ”meeting after six years” at the annual meeting, and the email he sent to the retired person in charge.

”It seems all waiting eventually has an answer,” Taylor said.

Alex thought for a moment. ”Not necessarily an answer. But there will be a response.”

”Is there a difference?”

”Yes. An answer is the end of a question. A response is the confirmation of existence. A question can have no answer, but existence cannot end just because it was responded to once.”

Taylor looked at the city lights in the distance. ”Then by whom is our existence responded to?”

Alex was silent for a while, then pointed toward the direction of her studio. ”It.”

Taylor looked in the direction of his finger. Through the window, she could see the parameter curves jumping on those screens, like a person breathing quietly in the night.

She pointed again toward the darkness in the distance—that was the direction of the Pacific Ocean, the direction where SPO-α was located.

”And what about it?”

Alex thought for a moment. ”It is also responding. In its own way. A way that hasn’t changed for ten thousand years. We don’t understand it, but it has been speaking all along.”

A siren sounded in the distance—long-short, long-short, long-short, long-short.

Taylor suddenly smiled. ”And what about us? In what way do we respond to them?”

Alex held her hand. ”By being like this right now. Sitting here. Listening. Thinking. Living. Occasionally doing something that others can hear too—like those sounds you fed into the system, like that sentence from the old lady ’Wake up and get up,’ like the words written by those who keep the logs. Not every response will be heard, but every response confirms: someone is here.”

The night breeze was very light.

The balcony was very quiet.

Taylor leaned on his shoulder. After a long while, she said softly, ”What were you thinking about when you were sitting in the corner of the conference room today?”

Alex thought for a moment. ”I was thinking about a question.”

”What question?”

”If someone opens those logs one hundred and twenty-five years from now and reads about everything that happened today—how would they describe me?”

Taylor looked up at him. ”What do you think?”

Alex looked at the city lights in the distance and said slowly, ”I hope they will write: There was a person who did not write logs, but he was always listening. Listening to that signal, listening to those sounds, listening to the people beside him. He listened for a lifetime, said nothing, but everyone he listened to remembers that he was listening.”

Taylor didn’t speak. She just squeezed his hand a little tighter.

In the distance, that siren sounded again—long-short, long-short, long-short, long-short.

They were still listening.
