From American Internet Celebrity to God Among Men

221: Chapter 221 The Source of the GiftThe first time Taylor heard the story of the Korean-American Grandmother was when Alex recounted it during dinner.

She put down her chopsticks and remained silent for a long time.

The next morning, Alex found that she had gone to the studio early. Spread out on the table were several recordings sent by the Community Soundscape Project—excerpts from the Korean-American Grandmother’s handwritten diary from forty years ago, along with a ”Sound Guide” she had recently recorded for future immigrants.

Taylor wore her headphones, listening to one segment repeatedly: the Korean-American Grandmother, in still-stilted English, slowly read out the first sound identification note she had recorded back then—”Fire truck, long—short—long, slower than an ambulance, heavier than a police car. September 12, 1978, heard it for the first time, cried.”

Her voice was old and calm, like reading from a long-dusty archive.

Taylor imported this vocal segment into her ”Parameter Flow” system. She didn’t process it at all, merely cutting out the slight intake of breath before the date, allowing the phrase ”heard it for the first time, cried” to become an independent audio clip. Then, she placed this clip into the candidate list of the ”Parameter Flow” system without specifying any rules for its appearance, letting the system decide for itself when and how to use it.

Three days later, late at night, after a window of silence in the seventy-third minute, the clip appeared in the gift position.

When Alex was called over from the study by Taylor, this vocal segment, less than four seconds long, was playing repeatedly through the studio’s monitor speakers. It wasn’t a loop; it was as if the system had been captivated by this material, invoking it three consecutive times under different parameter states, with each instance having different volume, spatial positioning, and reverb depth.

The first time, it was close, clear, with minimal reverb, like someone sitting opposite you telling a story.

The second time, it was distant, carrying a long, hollow delay, as if coming from the end of a corridor.

The third time, it was almost drowned out by the background field, leaving only the trailing sound of the word ”cried” floating on the surface of the ocean of sound before it dissipated.

”It likes this material,” Taylor said softly, as if afraid to disturb something. ”My system... it chose it. Three times. It has never done that with any other gift material.”

They sat side by side, listening to that almost-vanished trailing sound from the third time a few more times.

”Because it knows what it heard,” Alex said. ”A human spent thirty years going from being a total stranger to understanding the sounds of a city. This is the longest story about listening, and also the most triumphant moment of listening. Your system—it is also learning to listen. It has recognized its own kind.”

Taylor didn’t answer. Under the faint glow of the monitor speakers’ indicator lights, Alex saw her quietly wipe her eyes with the back of her hand.

The Community Soundscape Project received an unexpected request: a third-grade teacher at a nearby elementary school hoped the project team could come and conduct a ”Listening Workshop” for the children.

This teacher had heard the story of the Korean-American Grandmother in a parent group chat and was deeply moved. Half of the children in her class were from immigrant families, and several had been in the United States for less than a year; their English was not yet fluent, and they were exceptionally quiet in class. ”It’s not that they aren’t smart; they are just using all their energy to listen, to distinguish, and to understand all the sounds in this new environment. Our curriculum rarely teaches ’how to listen.’ I want them to know that this ability itself is remarkable.”

The project team didn’t send a professional sound engineer or researcher; instead, they asked the Korean-American Grandmother to be the ”keynote speaker,” accompanied by a young community coordinator to act as an Interpreter and assistant.

The workshop took place in a sun-drenched music classroom. The Korean-American Grandmother brought her worn-out notebook, using a projector to display those faded, densely written handwritten entries. The children were a bit reserved at first, but when they discovered that this white-haired Korean-American Grandmother had also once not understood English and had been scared to tears by fire truck sirens, the classroom atmosphere gradually softened.

During the interactive session, the Korean-American Grandmother asked the children to close their eyes, stay quiet for thirty seconds, and then say what they had just heard.

”The air conditioner is humming.”

”Someone is blowing a whistle on the playground.”

”There are footsteps in the hallway.”

”My own heartbeat.”

After listening to the Interpreter, the Korean-American Grandmother nodded slowly. She said a sentence in Korean, and the Interpreter paused, their voice slightly choked: ”She says, ’You are already very good listeners. Do not think you are not smart just because you cannot understand what the adults are saying. Sound speaks many languages, and you are currently learning one of the hardest ones.’”

When the workshop ended, the children gave the Korean-American Grandmother the ”sound maps” they had drawn—on the paper were the classroom clock, the water cooler at the end of the hallway, the tree outside the window, and the footsteps of their peers, all marked with colored lines and circles labeled ”It’s loud here,” ”It’s gentle here,” ”It sounds like rain here.”

The Korean-American Grandmother carefully folded each drawing and placed it into the cloth bag she carried with her.

The project team’s sound engineer hid in the corner, recording the whole process with a camera. He didn’t interview anyone; he didn’t ask for the meaning of it all. He simply thought that when these children grew up, perhaps someone would remember this afternoon, remember a stranger—the Korean-American Grandmother—telling them: Listening is an ability, and it is also a gift.

Team K’s latest briefing on SPO-α had an unusually simple title: ”Retrospective Analysis of Long-term Carrier Frequency Drift.”

The report stated: When realigning all SPO-α signal records from the past eight years and fitting their center frequencies with higher precision, data analysts discovered an extremely tiny but persistent unidirectional drift. Over eight years, one of the signal’s main carrier frequencies had dropped by approximately 0.0003 Hz.

This value was so small it could be ignored. Any ordinary civilian radio receiver would not detect an offset of this magnitude. For the vast majority of research purposes, it fell entirely within the ”instrument error range” and wasn’t even worth recording.

But it was a trend. It was not random fluctuation, not periodic jitter; it was a continuous, uninterrupted, and extremely slow decline over eight years.

The report wrote: ”If this drift rate is extrapolated to a centennial scale, it will accumulate a drop of approximately 0.004 Hz; on a millennial scale, 0.04 Hz; on a ten-thousand-year scale, 0.4 Hz. We cannot determine if this is a design feature, system aging, or some environmental influence caused by unknown factors. The only thing that is certain is that this signal is not entirely constant. It is, very slowly, ’aging.’”

The report concluded with an attached graph: it fit the eight years of frequency data into a thin line that was almost horizontal but definitively slanted toward the bottom right. The angle of the slant was so slight that one had to zoom in to the edge of the screen to faintly perceive it.

Alex stared at this graph for a long time.

He remembered the ”procedural coldness” he felt when he first encountered the SPO-α signal years ago—the sense of eternity, unchanging for ten thousand years, absolutely precise, without beginning or end.

Now he knew that it, too, would grow old. At a speed almost impossible for humans to measure, on a schedule measured in ten-thousand-year units.

Perhaps one day, its frequency would drop below a certain threshold, triggering another unknown program.

Perhaps it would continue to decline until one day it fell completely silent.

Perhaps it had already been running like this for tens of thousands of years, and would continue to run for tens of thousands more, until some unknowable end.

Scientifically, this slightly slanted line meant countless unsolved mysteries.

But what Alex felt at this moment was not the urge to solve a mystery.

It was a kind of resonance that was almost tender.

He said to that distant direction in his heart:

”So, you are not eternal either.”

”So, you are also slowly, imperceptibly growing old.”

”So, we are the same.”

He juxtaposed this briefing in his memory with the phrase Taylor was replaying in the studio: ”heard it for the first time, cried.”

A human spent thirty years identifying home from the noise of a strange city.

A beacon spent ten thousand years, and its frequency dropped by 0.4 Hz.

The ways of listening are different. The timescales of listening are different.

But listening itself has always been an art that walks alongside time.

After dinner, Taylor continued to debug her Parameter Flow system. Alex sat beside her, telling her about the SPO-α’s ten-thousand-year 0.4 Hz drift as casual conversation.

After listening, Taylor thought for a few seconds, then began to adjust a parameter on the screen she had never touched before, labeled ”Global Base Frequency.” She lowered that value by 0.0001 Hz—given the precision of her system, this adjustment was almost indistinguishable.

”This is a tribute,” she said, looking at the screen earnestly. ”To a signal much older than me. It is slowly descending over ten thousand years; I am imitating one second of it in thirty seconds.”

Then she pressed the run button.

The system started. The golden ratio background field emerged as usual. Alex listened intently, but he couldn’t hear any change.

But he knew the change existed.

In the deepest, almost imperceptible frequency baseline of this sonic life form, there was a tiny offset that only he could recognize—it was a thirty-second Echo of the ten-thousand-year loneliness of a distant beacon.

This was silly. It was completely scientifically meaningless.

But Taylor did it so naturally, like lighting a porch lamp for a stranger in passing.

Late at night, Alex stood alone on the balcony, gazing at the southern skyline.

He wondered, if one day, the SPO-α’s frequency finally dropped to the threshold that triggered that unknown program, what would it do? Would it send a final report and then go silent forever, or would it initiate some kind of response he couldn’t imagine, one prepared for ten thousand years?

He didn’t know. Perhaps he would never know in his lifetime.

But he knew that at this moment, on this planet, more and more people were beginning to practice listening: the Korean-American Grandmother teaching children to distinguish between fire trucks and ambulances; elementary school students closing their eyes to draw the colors of sounds; an artist adjusting the inaudible undertones of their work for a ten-thousand-year frequency shift.

This is the way humanity faces eternity:

Not conquering, not anxious, not belittling oneself.

Just lighting the lamp, opening the ears, and passing the story on.

The night wind was slightly cool. He turned and went back inside.

The study light was still on, and on Taylor’s screen, the ”Parameter Flow” was quietly flowing according to its new, barely audible baseline.
