The Fantastic Little Farmer

Chapter 49: Chapter 49: The Wandering Son of Romance That Even Ghosts Fear

Zhang Yun didn’t actually mind lending money to relatives.

If they usually treated his family poorly and only came to borrow money after finding out they were wealthy, he would ignore them completely without worrying about saving face.

However, his uncles had been willing to lend his family tens of thousands to build their house, which proved they were truly close. If they genuinely needed it, he was willing to help.

Of course, his own family’s well-being had to come first. Zhang Yun didn’t mind lending out the few tens of thousands in cash from earlier, but he wondered if his father would keep quiet about the million-plus in his bank account.

”Uncle Fugui!”

He greeted him with a smile as he entered the house, seeing Uncle Fugui helping his father cook. The two older men were bustling about while chatting enthusiastically.

”Yun, you’re back from feeding the fish! This kid is so hardworking. The more I look at him, the more I like him!”

Uncle Fugui’s overwhelming enthusiasm made Zhang Yun break a sweat. With such a great attitude, he honestly couldn’t think of any other reason besides wanting to borrow money.

”Go wash up. We’ll be eating soon.”

Zhang Fu was in a great mood, chuckling as he shooed Zhang Yun out of the kitchen.

Zhang Yun was a bit puzzled. His father had been annoyed with Uncle Fugui’s behavior earlier. Did waking up from a drunken stupor magically make him happy?

If Uncle Fugui was eating here, they would inevitably drink. However, with only one bottle of Maotai left, Zhang Yun felt a bit reluctant to part with it. Although Uncle Fugui was family, the main issue was that the liquor was hard to buy. He had gotten it from Old Zhang, so it was better to save it for his father.

He cleared the dining table and headed out to the grocery store at the edge of the village. They only sold budget-friendly liquors here, which Zhang Yun wasn’t very familiar with. The owner recommended Wan Liquor King, so he bought two of the more expensive bottles, which still only cost a little over a hundred yuan each.

On his way home with the liquor, Xiuxun suddenly darted out from a dark corner!

Startled, Zhang Yun quickly whispered, ”What’s wrong?”

Xiuxun had heard him leave and deliberately came out to wait for him. Although the night offered some cover, being caught together would make things even harder to explain, so she didn’t waste any time.

”Come here!” Xiuxun said softly, standing on her tiptoes to feel his forehead.

Zhang Yun’s heart warmed. It turned out Xiuxun was still worried about his fever! ”I’m fine now...”

Xiuxun had been bluffed by him that afternoon, but afterward, she felt something was off. Even if doing that sort of thing had an effect, it shouldn’t make his entire body burn up. However, she couldn’t keep her eyes on Zhang Yun every second of the day, so she could only find the time to come over now.

Confirming that his forehead was no longer burning with fever, Xiuxun let out a sigh of relief and whispered, ”It’s good that you’re fine. If you get a fever, make sure to take medicine. Don’t just tough it out.”

”I know.” Zhang Yun didn’t argue; he liked the feeling of being cared for.

”I’m leaving.” Xiuxun immediately hurried back home.

Zhang Yun watched her back disappear under the streetlights before returning to his own house.

”Where did you run off to?” Zhang Fu had already arranged the dishes on the living room dining table.

”We were out of liquor, so I went to the store and bought two bottles.” Zhang Yun smiled, placing the Wan Liquor King on the table.

Zhang Fu smiled. His son really knew what was up! He hadn’t found a convenient moment to warn him earlier and had been afraid Zhang Yun would open the other bottle of Maotai.

”We had Maotai at noon, and now it’s Wan Liquor King for dinner? Afraid I’ll drink it all?” Wang Fugui pulled a long face in mock offense.

Zhang Fu had already prepared an excuse. ”Fugui, you’re overthinking it. Apparently, this Maotai is hard to get. Zhang Yun couldn’t even buy it at the local tobacco and liquor store. He managed to get one bottle transferred from someone else.”

Wang Fugui laughed. ”Haha, I’m just kidding. It’s not like I specifically came back because I was craving Maotai!”

”This kid is filial. I’ve never drank it before, so instead of buying clothes or shoes for himself, he spent the money to let me have a taste. When you visited, I obviously had to bring out the best to host you!”

Zhang Fu said this as he opened the Wan Liquor King.

In the past, he would have thought a dozen-yuan bottle of liquor was perfectly fine. But compared to the Maotai, whether it was a few dozen yuan or over a hundred for the Wan Liquor King, it felt like nothing.

”Don’t open it...” Wang Fugui quickly stopped him. ”I still have to ride my bike back later. I drank a little at noon and felt a bit lightheaded. I definitely wouldn’t dare drink tonight.”

”It’s fine! If you drink too much, just stay the night here. It’s not like we don’t have a spare room.”

”No, no...”

After some polite back-and-forth, they didn’t open the liquor and simply ate their food. Then, Zhang Fu brought up a topic.

”Uncle Fugui gets things done fast. This afternoon, he already found a girl for you and even got her WeChat. You should add her later. Get in touch, familiarize yourselves with each other, and then meet up.”

Zhang Yun was dumbfounded. Uncle Fugui actually introduced a girl to him! At noon, he thought it was just an excuse, but here it was—talk about high efficiency.

Wang Fugui smiled brightly, handing Zhang Yun a slip of paper. ”Work hard at this! You’re very outstanding now. You’re a match for any girl, so don’t feel insecure.”

Zhang Yun had no choice but to take it. On it was written a phone number and a WeChat username.

”I really feel like it’s a bit too early. Right now, I just want to focus on my career...”

”Focusing on your career doesn’t stop you from pursuing girls. You don’t raise fish at night, and you don’t dig for ginseng at night either. People your age don’t even watch TV anymore, so what else can you do? You either play cards or mess around on your phone. Isn’t chatting with a girl better?”

Zhang Yun could only smile wryly at Uncle Fugui’s lecture. He wondered if he was supposed to outright reject the blind date when he had merely been looking for an excuse.

”Your uncle knows you lack Experience, but don’t worry! Wooing girls is something I excel at! Back in the day, I was known as the Wandering Son of the dating scene, a true terror who never missed a target...”

Speaking of his youth, Wang Fugui carried an air of heroism, enthusiastically reminiscing about his glorious past.

Zhang Yun burst out laughing. ”Uncle Fugui, are you serious?”

Zhang Fu tapped the table. ”I can testify to that! When Fugui was young, he wasn’t bald and didn’t have a big belly. He frequently took girls out to watch videos, sing karaoke, and things like that.”

Wang Fugui gave a hair-tossing flick of his head. ”I’m a good man who retired from the game. Otherwise, even now, I’d be a lady-killer. Let me tell you, chatting up a girl comes down to one phrase: be bold, be attentive, and be thick-skinned!”

Zhang Yun never imagined that one day an elder would teach him the secrets to picking up girls... He found it both a bit awkward and highly amusing.

”As the saying goes, fortune favors the bold while cowards starve! Girls are bound to be a little reserved. You can’t expect them to take the initiative to chase you. Just thicken your skin and be brave. At worst, you’ll be scolded for being shameless! What do you have to lose?

”Furthermore, most of the time, girls say things they don’t mean just to save face. Teasing is a sign of affection, and women love bad boys...”

Uncle Fugui’s so-called secrets were all clichés. Although Zhang Yun hadn’t tested them out, he felt they were incredibly tacky and outdated. However, not wanting to reject his elder’s good intentions, he could only listen with an awkward smile.

”Getting back to this girl, she’s from Xiaobei Village. She’s well-educated and cultured, works in a big city, and has seen the world. Because of this, she’s quite picky and looks down on the average village boy.

”You’re different. You’re educated, handsome, and not lacking in any aspect. Be bold!”

In the countryside, any girl who attended high school was considered well-educated and cultured by the older generation. Zhang Yun didn’t know how this girl Uncle Fugui spoke of actually fared. For someone working out in a big city to still have her family arrange blind dates, she surely wasn’t a fresh graduate, right?

”Uncle Fugui, is this girl on the older side?” Zhang Yun couldn’t help but ask.
