The Fantastic Little Farmer

Chapter 19: Chapter 19: Finding You a Wife

”Save me?” Zhang Yun was taken aback. What kind of situation could be so serious?

His first reaction was that Yang Bo and his friends had gotten drunk and harassed Chen Hui, leading him to run over and ask for help. But that wasn’t right—this was a man’s voice! Looking closely, the person who had rushed in was actually Yang Bo!

Yang Bo threw himself directly in front of Zhang Yun and hugged his thigh. ”Old classmate, you have to save me!”

”Is someone after you?” Zhang Yun took a look. The door was shut, and no one was chasing him.

”I’m not afraid of you laughing at me. By treating our classmates to dinner today, I was actually asking everyone for help,” Yang Bo said with a miserable face. ”A few days ago, I was driving my dad’s car and hit an old man on the road. It was dark, and I didn’t notice him. As a result, the old man died, and his family is going to sue me for a hit-and-run...”

Zhang Yun showed absolutely no sympathy. ”You did commit a hit-and-run!”

”I didn’t mean to... It’s meaningless to talk about this now. My dad pulled some strings and is trying to mediate with them. They want one million in compensation. Otherwise, they insist on suing me. A hit-and-run resulting in death—wouldn’t I be locked up for years?”

Zhang Yun really wanted to say that it was none of his business.

”They later negotiated down to a minimum of six hundred thousand,” Yang Bo continued. ”My dad has emptied our family savings and is borrowing money from everywhere. I asked our classmates for help, and everyone chipped in a little. Lend me one hundred thousand and save my life. I’ll pay you back one hundred and ten thousand next year!”

”One hundred thousand?” Zhang Yun’s eyes widened. He thought, ”Our friendship is worth a few hundred at most, and you have the nerve to ask for one hundred thousand?”

”I have to pay interest anyway, so why let the bank or outsiders earn it? I’ll give you ten thousand in interest!” Yang Bo lay prostrate in front of Zhang Yun, his face full of sincerity. ”My dad is a contractor. He can definitely earn it back.”

Zhang Yun watched coldly the entire time. He didn’t know how much of Yang Bo’s words were true, but judging from his relaxed demeanor when he first walked in, things definitely weren’t an imminent crisis. Perhaps he really was borrowing money, and the others had chipped in some. But more importantly, seeing Zhang Yun order a huge table of food in a private room all by himself must have made Yang Bo suspect he had struck it rich by winning the lottery or something!

Zhang Yun said flatly, ”You hit someone and didn’t help them in time. You deserve to die. Sell your car and house, and compensate them!”

”If we sell the house, where will my family live? My dad is a contractor, so the car can’t be sold either. Just lend us the money to tide us over. Once we get our payments, I’ll definitely pay you back first! Please, help me out!” Yang Bo’s eyes grew eager. He had noticed something crucial: Zhang Yun didn’t say he had no money!

Zhang Yun shook his head. ”If your dad’s so-called contracting business was really that profitable, he would easily be able to get the funds. Since you’re even coming to me to borrow money, you’ve definitely exhausted everywhere else. How are you going to pay me back?”

Yang Bo became anxious and tried to provoke him. ”Don’t make excuses. Be straightforward. Are we brothers or not? Do you not trust me? If you’re a true friend, lend it to me. I definitely won’t treat you poorly!”

Young people were hot-blooded and easily morally kidnapped by brotherly loyalty. They were also thin-skinned and afraid of losing face. When pushed into a corner with no room to decline politely, they would often just agree.

Zhang Yun looked baffled. ”I’m not, and I don’t.”

”...” Yang Bo hadn’t expected him to respond so directly, not giving him the slightest bit of face.

”Your food is packed.” At this moment, a waitress pushed open the door. From her angle, she saw someone kneeling between Zhang Yun’s legs. She quickly backed away. ”AH! I-I’ll come back later...”

”...” Zhang Yun was speechless. His innocence was ruined! He grabbed Yang Bo by the collar and tossed him aside.

”Zhang Yun! Are you really going to leave me to die? I’ve put aside my pride to beg you like this! It would be one thing if you didn’t have money, but you do, and you still won’t help me? It’s not like I won’t pay you back!” Yang Bo’s tone grew aggressive.

”Your dad won’t even sell his car, and you’re not my son, so what the hell does this have to do with me!”

Zhang Yun immediately stood up and walked out the door, while Yang Bo kicked a chair violently behind him.

”Th-that fast?” The waitress was still waiting outside, shocked by the scene she had just witnessed.

”You saw wrong!” Zhang Yun didn’t even know how to explain himself. He grabbed the takeout boxes and headed downstairs.

The waitress couldn’t help but sigh inwardly. Men sure had it easy; all they had to do was zip up their pants... At that moment, she saw Yang Bo walk out resentfully, and her mouth immediately formed a perfect O-shape in shock. She hadn’t seen wrong earlier. She had gotten a clear view of the general situation. However, the person kneeling in front had their back to her, so in her haste, she hadn’t gotten a good look. Only now did she realize it was actually a man!

”What are you looking at!” Yang Bo snapped angrily, hurriedly returning to his own private dining room.

In the waitress’s eyes, this was nothing short of him flying into a rage out of humiliation for being caught in the act! Sigh, public morals were degenerating by the day. It was truly an eyesore. No wonder a single person had booked a whole private room... It was so shameful, yet so thrilling.

The hospital’s driver was already waiting. Afraid that Yang Bo would chase after him, Zhang Yun quickly got into the car and left.

”By the way, are there any phone stores still open?” Zhang Yun figured his phone was ruined from water damage, so he planned to buy a new one.

”They’re all open at this hour. Do you need to buy a phone?” The county town was only so big, so the driver naturally knew where phones were sold.

Zhang Yun felt his pockets. ”I’ll take a look another day. Just take me home first—Tianxin Village at the foot of Bijia Mountain.”

Buying a phone required paying with a phone, and paying with a phone required having a phone first... Zhang Yun hadn’t brought his waterlogged phone with him, and now he didn’t have a single dime in his pockets! Ouyang Kunpeng’s one hundred thousand had been transferred to Alipay. Otherwise, Zhang Yun wouldn’t have even remembered his bank card number. He was usually accustomed to relying on his phone, and he had only just realized this problem.

He felt a bit fortunate that he hadn’t gone to another restaurant to eat because of Gao Dajin and the others. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have even been able to pay for a bowl of noodles...

”Driver, wait a moment. Slow down.” When they reached the village entrance, Zhang Yun called out to the driver.

”Alright. You point the way.”

”No... stop the car.”

Zhang Yun saw a familiar figure under the large tree at the village entrance. After stopping and looking closely, it was indeed his dad!

”This is far enough. Thanks.” Zhang Yun hurried out of the car with his takeout boxes. ”Dad, what are you doing sitting here?”

Since it wasn’t Zhang Lifeng’s car, Zhang Fu hadn’t paid any attention when it approached. Only when Zhang Yun greeted him did he realize his son had returned.

”Did someone from Li Bing’s side come to our house to cause trouble again?” Zhang Yun asked in a low voice.

”Ah? No! I was just out for a stroll since I had nothing to do after dinner.” Zhang Fu quickly checked his son over, only relaxing when he saw that he was completely unharmed.

Zhang Yun immediately understood. His dad didn’t know the situation and was worried something might have happened to him. He was also afraid that Li Bing would gather people to block him at the village entrance, so he had waited here in advance. Looking at the cigarette butts on the ground, he must have been waiting for a long time.

”Dad, let’s go home! That hospital vice president treated me to dinner, and I packed some leftovers to bring back.”

”Is that old man really the vice president of the People’s Hospital?” Zhang Fu was a bit shocked. In his mind, a leader of the People’s Hospital was a very important figure.

As they walked home, Zhang Yun selectively told his dad a bit about what had happened today, sticking to the things that could be shared.

The walk from the village entrance to their home wasn’t very far. However, Zhang Yun felt as if a lifetime had passed. How long had it been since he had walked side by side with his father like this? Perhaps it was back in elementary school? When everyone came back from evening self-study, his dad would be waiting at the village entrance to walk home with him.

When he was a child, this road felt very long, but now it felt much shorter. When he was young, his father seemed so tall and broad, but now he was shorter than Zhang Yun, and he even looked a bit hunched and stooped...

Zhang Yun felt a slight sting in his nose. ”Dad, I can definitely make a lot of money.”

”Haha, alright. I’ll wait for you to make a lot of money.”

”I was thinking... when the time comes, I’ll find you a wife. My mom’s been gone for so long... AH!” Before Zhang Yun could finish speaking, his dad smacked him on the head.

Zhang Fu scolded him with a laugh, ”You rascal, you’ve really grown up! Wanting to find a wife for yourself isn’t something to be ashamed of. Do you have to push it onto me?”

”...” Zhang Yun was a bit dizzy. He had been speaking from the bottom of his heart!
