The Fantastic Little Farmer

Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Giving You a Spot as a Live-in Son-in-Law

”Live-in son-in-law, my foot!” Zhang Yun glared at her. ”If you weren’t a patient, someone would have bashed your head in long ago!”

”Bring it on!”

Zhang Yun didn’t want to bicker with a patient. Before leaving, he said seriously, ”Let me be real with you for a second!”

Ouyang Mingruo remained noncommittal. ”Go ahead. Let’s hear your story.”

”Your family obviously isn’t just rich; you have a massive background. A little farmer like me definitely can’t afford to offend you. Please don’t make baseless accusations about me molesting you. That could genuinely... get someone killed!”

Zhang Yun knew his own limits. Families of this Level were not the likes of Li Bing and Li Dajiang; they were truly untouchable. But if they crossed his bottom line and forced him to fight to the bitter end, he would definitely drag them down to hell with him!

Subduing the Sanda expert Xu Jin at noon had given him a new surge of confidence. Having eaten another petal in the afternoon, he knew for a fact that he could absolutely crush the men in black waiting outside.

Ouyang Mingruo looked at him and fell silent for a moment. ”I’ll be real with you, too.”

Seeing that she had dropped her half-joking attitude, Zhang Yun parroted her earlier words, ”Let’s hear your story.”

”I am the only one who gets to reject people; no one gets to reject me!” Ouyang Mingruo spoke with a trace of arrogance and confidence.

Zhang Yun scoffed. ”Sure, ignoring your family background, your personal qualifications are excellent. There isn’t a single woman in our entire county who can compare to you. But guess what? I’m not interested!”

Ouyang Mingruo’s gaze turned sharp. ”Say that again, I dare you.”

”Forget making me a live-in son-in-law. Even if you willingly married into my village, I still wouldn’t want you. Look at your delicate skin and tender meat. Can you farm? Can you carry manure?”

Farming was bad enough, but carrying manure?!

Ouyang Mingruo glared at him in fury, frantically looking around for something to bash his head in!

”A small mountain village, the massive Earth—everything is under my control! My goal is nothing less than the sea of stars...” The Mysterious Ring and the Peach Blossom Spring Space, the changes over the past two days, had given Zhang Yun this profound confidence.

Ouyang Mingruo thought he was going to say something profound, but upon hearing this, she just rolled her eyes. ”Chunibyo!”

Zhang Yun smiled. ”You wouldn’t understand.”

Ouyang Mingruo pointed a finger at him. ”Go home, wash up, and wait! You are going to be my live-in son-in-law, whether you like it or not!”

Zhang Yun stared at her for a few seconds, shaking his head with a sigh. ”You’re hurt this badly and you’re still acting. Aren’t you tired? Your current situation is nothing more than one of two scripts.”

”Oh?”

”First, your family found you a perfectly matched fiancé, but you don’t like him. So, you’re trying to find a human shield. The greater the disparity in status, the more it will disgust your family.

”The second script is that your family is failing, surrounded by powerful enemies, and some arrogant young master has taken a fancy to you. You maintain your pride and swear never to bow down, so he arranged a car crash to teach you a lesson. Thinking you have no way out when you return, you decided to act recklessly and find a random guy for a flash marriage. Even if the other party doesn’t give up, it will at least disgust him...”

Ouyang Mingruo burst into a laugh. ”Forgive me for not being able to clap, but I really have to give you a critique. Poverty has truly limited your imagination. What a cliché plot! If you were a screenwriter, you wouldn’t just get scolded—viewers would mail you razor blades!”

Zhang Yun shook his head. ”Keep being stubborn! Rich misses like you just yearn for an ordinary life. You all fantasize about meeting a handsome, straight guy who has been single since birth and having a passionate, earth-shattering romance...”

”Wait!” Ouyang Mingruo interrupted him. ”Where did you hear that? I mean, have you ever even met someone like that?”

”I may not have eaten pork, but I’ve seen pigs run! That’s how it always happens on TV!”

”You’re the pig!” On TV... The sheer absurdity sapped Ouyang Mingruo of any desire to argue.

”Even though I am a handsome, straight guy who has been single since birth, I am not the kind of man you can get! I’m just a little farmer who grows crops and raises fish. Don’t bring your wealthy family feuds and melodramatic palace dramas over to me.”

Watching him intentionally—or perhaps unintentionally—do a ”handsome hair flip” as he spoke made Ouyang Mingruo stifle a laugh.

”Tsk, tsk! Your mouth says no, but your body is very honestly flirting with me. Don’t worry! I’ll make an exception and give you a spot among the candidates for my live-in son-in-law!”

Zhang Yun couldn’t listen to this anymore. Too lazy to even say goodbye, he simply turned and left.

Stepping out of the ward, Zhang Yun was a little surprised. Not only was Ouyang Kunpeng not eavesdropping at the door, but he had also led his men several meters away.

”Zhang Yun, let’s talk over here!” Seeing him come out, Zhang Lifeng immediately waved him over.

Ouyang Mingruo had thoroughly annoyed Zhang Yun, and he really didn’t want to waste any more words on them. However, since Ouyang Kunpeng gave him a polite nod, he decided to walk over.

The three of them entered an empty ward. Zhang Yun didn’t speak, waiting for them to start.

”Um... Miss Ouyang isn’t here, so I’ll ask you again in front of Mr. Ouyang. Did you feed Miss Ouyang something at the scene?” Zhang Lifeng’s expression grew serious.

Being called all the way over here without receiving a single red envelope, only to be badgered about becoming a live-in son-in-law, left Zhang Yun feeling somewhat displeased. He took the opportunity to lay it out.

”I brought two stalks of old mountain ginseng to sell in the county. At the time, I saw her coughing up blood and was afraid she wouldn’t make it to the hospital, so I fed her some ginseng juice to keep her alive. Didn’t I sell the other one to you? If there’s a problem with it, you can go test it yourself.”

Ouyang Kunpeng interjected, ”Mr. Zhang, you misunderstand. It’s not that there’s a problem, but rather that the effects were spectacularly good, which makes us very curious. It seems your ginseng is no ordinary ginseng.”

Zhang Yun pouted his lips toward the dean. ”Dean Zhang heard about the incident this morning and figured it could be useful for the patient. Since there wasn’t enough time to go through the hospital’s procurement process, he paid a high price out of his own pocket to buy the other stalk as a backup for the patient.”

Hearing Zhang Yun finally put in a good word for him, Zhang Lifeng felt a surge of excitement and quickly declared, ”It’s what I should do. We are doctors; the patient always comes first.”

Seeing Ouyang Kunpeng nod at him made the old man feel yet another wave of excitement.

”Since Mingruo consumed the other stalk, it’s only right that we compensate you at market value.” Ouyang Kunpeng took out his phone. ”Dean Zhang, how much is it worth?”

Zhang Lifeng hurriedly replied, ”That is a wild mountain ginseng that is decades old. The fact that just consuming its fresh juice had such miraculous effects on Miss Ouyang proves how extraordinary it is. I was in a rush at the time and valued it at one hundred thousand... Of course, I might have misjudged it...”

Zhang Yun internally shouted, ”Holy cow!”

Old Zhang had instantly bumped the price up by fifty thousand! Just by running his mouth, he had made a 100% profit in a single day!

However, this value was set based on the man’s status and seniority. If it were Zhang Yun himself trying to sell it, no one would have bought it even if he priced it at a mere thousand bucks.

As the direct beneficiary, Zhang Yun naturally wouldn’t expose him. Playing along, he feigned a shy look. ”Our area produces ginseng, but they’ve been harvested so much that very few remain. I dug it up in a very dangerous place, so...”

”It’s only fair.” Ouyang Kunpeng directly transferred one hundred thousand to Zhang Yun.

Zhang Yun originally wanted to bypass the middleman and directly cultivate this wealthy buyer so Zhang Lifeng wouldn’t earn the price difference. However, noticing the look in Ouyang Kunpeng’s eyes, he realized the man didn’t actually care about the ginseng—he just didn’t want to owe Zhang Yun any more favors.

”Thank you, Boss Ouyang.”

”I should be the one thanking you.” Ouyang Kunpeng then turned to Zhang Lifeng. ”Dean, I hope you don’t mind if I have another chat with Mr. Zhang?”

”You two go ahead. I’ll step out first!” Tactfully taking his leave, Zhang Lifeng exited and shut the door securely behind him.

He thought, ”This is the real reason they called me in!” Zhang Yun waited for him to speak.

Ouyang Kunpeng revealed an amiable smile. ”There aren’t many excellent young men as warmhearted and kind as you nowadays. I truly admire you...”

This opening line made Zhang Yun’s heart skip a beat. He thought, ”No way, right? Does he also want to recruit me as a live-in son-in-law? Do neither this father nor his daughter play by the rules?”
