”What do you want to do?”

Chen Jie looked at Shen Wansan and asked. Shen Wansan picked up the tea on the table, took a sip, and said: ”I want to be friends with Guild Leader Chen.”

”Be friends?”

Chen Jie looked at Shen Wansan and immediately said: ”Making friends by giving away 100,000 stones of grain for free, that’s quite a bold move.”

”Even if you count each jin of grain at ten cents, your 100,000 stones are worth ten thousand taels of Snowflake Pattern Silver. You say give it up, just like that?”

Shen Wansan laughed heartily and said: ”When I make friends, I never care about wealth or how much money, whether it’s ten thousand taels of silver or a million taels, it’s just a number. What I value is sincerity. I clicked with Guild Leader Chen right away. If I can use a bit of silver to make friends with a hero like Guild Leader Chen, it’s a blessing I wouldn’t dare wish for.”

”I just don’t know if Guild Leader Chen could consider making a friend out of someone like me, a mere merchant?”

Shen Wansan looked at Chen Jie and said, Chen Jie looked at Shen Wansan and immediately said: ”Haha... Good Mr. Shen, since you have this thought, I also wouldn’t dare refuse.”

”I am willing to be friends with Mr. Shen.”

Chen Jie cupped his fists towards Shen Wansan, Shen Wansan heard this and said: ”Good, Guild Leader Chen is straightforward. In that case, I will take charge, and for this time, our Suzhou Chamber of Commerce’s 250,000 stones of grain, I will gift you 100,000 stones, and the remaining 150,000 stones, I will sell to you at nine cents each.”

”Guild Leader Chen, what do you think? Are you satisfied with this result?”

Shen Wansan looked at Chen Jie, and Chen Jie, upon hearing this, glanced at Shen Wansan and immediately said: ”Mr. Shen, I am satisfied with the business part, but you still call me Brother Jiu Si until now. Why can’t you address me as Brother Chen?”

Upon hearing this, Shen Wansan immediately laughed: ”Yes, yes, it’s my fault.”

At this point, he stood up, very formally cupped his fists, and said: ”Let’s greet each other anew. I am Shen Fu, known as Wan San, originally from Jiangsu and Zhejiang, currently residing in Suzhou and Hangzhou, now twenty-five years old.”

Upon hearing this, Chen Jie cupped his fists and said: ”I am surnamed Chen, name Jiusi, originally from Hubei Mianshui Xiantao, now residing in Mianshui, now nineteen.”

Having said that, Chen Jie said: ”Mr. Shen is older than I, so I should call you Brother. Good to meet you, Brother Shen.”

Upon hearing this, Shen Wansan immediately said: ”Being a few years older than Guild Leader Chen, I shall risk assuming the greater age and call you virtuous younger brother, Brother Chen.”

The two of them cupped fists at each other, marking a new acquaintance and officially forming a friendship, thus establishing a bond of friendship from then on.

Chen Jie again invited Shen Wansan to sit, and immediately said to Shen Wansan: ”Brother Shen, since we’re friends, I can’t do something to deceive a friend. How about this: I also purchase those 100,000 stones of grain at nine cents. Would that be okay?”

Upon hearing this, Shen Wansan’s face immediately turned unpleasant and he said: ”Brother Chen, what does this mean? Do you think I am insincere?”

Chen Jie said: ”No, no, I just don’t want Brother Shen to suffer too great a loss.”

Shen Wansan said: ”Haha... a loss? I rarely lose in business, and this time I made quite a profit, using just ten thousand taels to befriend a true hero like Jiu Si. I am delighted.”

”Furthermore, Jiu Si, you’ve prepared me a grand gift, these cotton cloths and patterned cloths, their quality is excellent and the price reasonable. Entrusted to me to sell, surely they can make money, so I’m not really losing out, am I?”

Chen Jie, upon hearing this, felt that Shen Wansan indeed wasn’t losing out, but he thought again that since making friends requires mutual benefit, he couldn’t just think of himself profiting while letting a friend lose money.

A friendship that is one-sided will not last long.

Chen Jie thought a bit and then said: ”How about this, Brother Shen, since you insist on giving me the grain, as a younger brother, I can’t let you suffer losses either.”

”This cotton cloth, let’s still sell to Brother Shen at the thirty cents I mentioned earlier.”

Shen Wansan said: ”Brother Chen, such high-quality cotton cloth, even sold to me at thirty-five cents, I can still earn a profit.”

Chen Jie, hearing this, said: ”Brother Shen, that five cents represents the friendship between us; don’t refuse.”

”If Brother Shen doesn’t accept, it’s as if you no longer consider me, Chen Jiusi, as a friend.”

Upon hearing this, Shen Wansan said: ”Well, alright then, I suppose I’ve taken advantage.”

”However, for this patterned cloth, Brother Chen, I can’t accept less than fifty-eight cents.”

Chen Jie said: ”Brother, listen to me, let’s not do fifty-eight, nor fifty, how about fifty-five, is that okay? If Brother thinks the profit margin is too thin, well, I have no objections, even at fifty cents, I can sell it.”

Shen Wansan thought, this patterned cloth, fifty-eight cents is market price, fifty-five cents is already a price-cut.

And on Chen Jie’s side, the cost for this patterned cloth is forty cents, meaning a fifteen-cent profit per chi.

”Alright, let’s go with what Brother suggests.”

In the end, Shen Wansan decided to follow Chen Jie’s suggestion, setting the prices at fifty-five cents per chi for the patterned cloth and thirty cents per chi for the cotton cloth.

This was a big transaction indeed, even if short-term profits may not match the grain trade, it will last longer, offering sustained business.

And Chen Jie also confirmed that as long as this business kept going, he could gain nearly ten thousand taels in revenue each month, enough even with this monthly salary alone to support two to three thousand guild disciples in Mianshui for a year. As for the remaining funds,

Chen Jie would accumulate and prepare, in keeping with the saying: store abundant grain, build high walls, and bide your time for power.

Chen Jie wanted to turn Mianshui into his own kingdom, clearing away anything that stood in his way.

The deal was quickly settled, and Chen Jie and Shen Wansan continued to chat casually.

Shen Wansan praised Chen Jie as an outstanding young talent, but Chen Jie said: ”Brother Shen, you’ve traveled far and wide, seen many things, and met many heroes. Can you share some insights with me?”
