Chapter 85 -80 Wife, Let Me Explain

“Die!”

Seeing Chen Jie’s teasing expression, Zhao Ya knew she had been played. The damn man before her was clearly toying with her, and she was instantly furious, throwing the Water Gourd in her hand at him.

She was not afraid that the man might suddenly harm her, because of her status. Even if Ni Manzi knew, he would dare only to capture her, not kill her.

Could this man really dare to kill her?

Chen Jie had no intention of hurting the girl; he merely wanted to tease her a bit to prevent her from being too clever.

Both sides had briefly tested each other and realized neither was easy to deal with, so they remained silent. Zhao Ya, however, kept glaring viciously at Chen Jie.

Chen Jie didn’t mind. Being glared at wouldn’t kill him, and besides, the girl was indeed quite beautiful.

“Hey, are you going to eat? Time’s up, you should get in the bag now.”

Chen Jie wiped the blood from his hand and then said to the girl. Surprised by his words, she replied, “Wait a bit longer, I don’t want to get in the bag again.”

Chen Jie stood up and said, “That’s not up to you!”

The girl was shocked and hurriedly said, “Wait a minute, I haven’t eaten the bun yet.”

Looking at the bun on the ground, she asked, “Why is your bun so dark? Did you poison it?”

Chen Jie looked at her and asked, “Haven’t you had sorghum buns before?”

The girl pulled off a small piece of the bun and put it in her mouth, chewing it lightly. She initially thought it would be unpleasant, but after a few chews, she said, “The taste isn’t bad. It’s better than white flour buns.”

Chen Jie didn’t respond.

*You enjoy it now, but if you eat it every meal, you’ll realize it can’t compare to the texture of white flour buns.*

*Moreover, not every family can afford to have sorghum buns for every meal. It was only after working hard that I could say my family could have these black sorghum buns every day.*

*But for people of high birth, white flour buns are commonplace. Seeing these dark sorghum buns, they find them novel.*

*Thinking about it, Chen Jie felt this world was much like his previous one.*

*What poor people take for granted may still be a novelty for the rich. It was like when I was a child; my family used wild vegetables to feed pigs, and then later, city people bought those wild vegetables as a good thing. Then after leaving the countryside, when I saw wild vegetables in the city, they seemed fresh again…*

With some reflection, Chen Jie noticed the girl tearing at the bun bit by bit. It would take forever for her to finish eating at this rate, and he had other things to do.

Thinking of this, Chen Jie said, “I’ll give you a tea’s worth of time. If you don’t finish by then, into the bag you go!”

“Ah, you, can’t you let someone eat in peace?”

Chen Jie replied, “Talking, talking also counts toward your time!”

“You!”

With that, the girl angrily took large bites of the bun, glaring intensely at Chen Jie. *Just you wait. You better hope you don’t fall into this Commandery Princess’s hands, or I’ll make you regret today’s actions, you damn bastard!*

The girl gnawed on the bun with an air of vengeance, her eyes burning with anger as she stared at Chen Jie.

Chen Jie was indifferent.

“Alright, time’s up!”

Chen Jie got up, grabbed the hemp rope, and gestured, “Come over.”

The girl walked over angrily and said fiercely, “You better not fall into this lady’s hands, or I’ll repay today’s humiliation tenfold, no, a hundredfold.”

Chen Jie said, “Alright, alright, give me your hands.”

He tied the girl with the hemp rope, stuffed a rag in her mouth, then put a burlap sack over her, tossing her into the corner.

Chen Jie said, “I’m leaving.”

Inside the bag, she made muffled sounds, and Chen Jie leaned over and asked, “What?”

More muffled sounds followed, and Chen Jie loosened the sack’s opening, quickly took out the rag, and the girl coughed violently, tears streaming down as she said, “Come back quickly. I’m, I’m afraid of the dark.”

Chen Jie heard this and said, “A hero like you is afraid of the dark?”

The girl stubbornly replied, “Yes, so what? Is it not allowed?”

Chen Jie said, “Alright, I’ll see. Now, things are chaotic out there, so don’t mess around. Be careful not to be spotted by bad people with bad intentions. You have to know, our village has many hooligans. If they saw a young lady as beautiful as you, they might not be as self-disciplined as I.”

This warning made the girl even more scared.

She was now weak and helpless. If she really encountered hooligans, the outcome would be unpredictable.

Thinking of this, she fell silent, finally looking at Chen Jie and saying, “If something happens to me, I won’t let you go even as a ghost!”

“Uh, it’s not like I’m going to do anything!”

“Then let me go!”

Chen Jie responded, “Forget it, you can become a ghost then. I don’t want to be one.”

“You!”

The girl found she really couldn’t out-talk this clever Ni Manzi before her. This bastard, one day I’ll strip off your mask to see who you really are. Just you wait!

“Open your mouth.”

Chen Jie took the rag, and the girl protested angrily, “This is too dirty. Can’t you give me a new one next time?”

“You’re a captive, with so many demands. Maybe next time.” Chen Jie said, stuffing the rag back in.

Then he tied up the mouth of the sack and, ignoring the noises from within, leaped deftly up to the cellar entrance, covered it with a wooden board, placed some miscellaneous items around to leave a vent, and left the shabby courtyard.

He wasn’t in a hurry to go home, wandered around the town to see if anyone was spying on him, and when he found no one was watching, he bought two roast chickens and headed home.

Just as he reached his courtyard, he saw Ruirui watching ants move in the corner with endless curiosity.

He just felt a sense of childish wonderment.

Except he hadn’t heard Ruirui muttering, “How come there’s not a single straggler today?”

At this moment, Chen Jie opened the gate, startling Ruirui. As soon as Ruirui saw him, she dashed over, “Brother-in-law.”

Chen Jie laughed, “What are you doing?”

“Watching ants move house.”

Ruirui answered, and Chen Jie took out the roast chicken, “Look what brother-in-law bought for you?”

“Wow, roast chicken!”

Ruirui jumped with excitement.

Chen Jie asked, “Where’s your sister?”

Ruirui replied, “Home, incubating chicks.”

“Hmm?”

Chen Jie was puzzled, Is it the kind of hatching I think it is?

At this time, Ruirui reached for the roast chicken in Chen Jie’s hand.

Seeing the bite mark on his hand.

“Brother-in-law, you’re hurt?”

Chen Jie smiled, pulling back his hand, “It’s nothing.”

Ruirui thought for a moment, said nothing, and took the roast chicken inside.

Upon entering, Chen Jie saw Su Yunjin fiddling with a wooden basin, inside of which was a ceramic pot filled with hay and other things for warmth, with eggs inside, and she was pouring suitable warm water around the pot, covering it with a small quilt for insulation.

After finishing, Su Yunjin looked up and saw Chen Jie had returned.

She stood up, her body moved a little and felt a bit painful, but she still smiled, “Husband, you’re back.”

Chen Jie asked, “What is this?”

“Oh, didn’t I say a couple of days ago that I wanted to raise some chicks and ducklings? Since we can’t go into town, I thought I’d hatch some myself.”

“So Aunt Erba helped me buy a few eggs.”

Chen Jie asked, “Isn’t this too much trouble?”

Su Yunjin replied, “It’s not much trouble, just need to change the warm water regularly, so it doesn’t get cold. Aunt Erba said chicks can hatch in twenty-one days.”

Hearing this, Chen Jie smiled, “That sounds quite laborious.”

“Not really, there’s nothing else to do anyway, so it gives me something to do.”

Su Yunjin said with a sweet smile.

She went to hold Chen Jie’s hand, but as soon as she touched it, her expression changed to surprise and then suddenly turned dejected.

Chen Jie saw her expression and noted the row of teeth marks on his hand.

*Damn it, I knew that woman would cause trouble for me.*

Chen Jie glanced at Su Yunjin and saw she was trying to smile, “Husband, you must be tired. I’ll cook for you.”

She turned and entered the inner room and took a bowl, seemingly to get some sorghum rice.

But turning away, she was already in tears.

Droplets, droplets…

The tears fell uncontrollably. She believed her life with her husband could be harmonious, filled with sweet music, and that good days were ahead.

But unexpectedly, her husband had another woman outside.

How could she not recognize the bite marks on the hand? They were clearly from another woman.

*Su Yunjin, oh Su Yunjin, why is your life so bitter…*

She felt extremely wronged at the moment.

She was quietly crying when strong arms embraced her from behind.

She heard the man’s deep breathing.

“Are you crying?”

“No, no.”

Su Yunjin’s voice cracked as she tried to explain.

“Do you think your husband is unfaithful, that he messed around outside just after taking your body?”

“No, that’s not it…”

Su Yunjin felt more and more wronged as she spoke.

“Do you feel particularly aggrieved?”

“Not at all, aren’t all men like that, with three wives and four concubines? I just got sand in my eyes.”

Upon hearing this, Chen Jie sighed.

“*You’re not speaking from the heart, are you.*”

Drops, drops!

The tears fell, landing on Chen Jie’s arm.

Gently turning her around, Chen Jie saw his wife had cried until she looked like a rain-soaked pear blossom.

He wiped away her tears, leaned closer, and whispered something in her ear.

“Hmm?!”

Hearing Chen Jie’s words, Su Yunjin widened her eyes in shock and looked at her husband with worry.

“Husband, you’re involved with rebels…”

“Shh!”

Chen Jie motioned for silence.

“Don’t tell anyone about this. I’ve entrusted my life to you.”

“Alright, alright, husband, rest assured, I didn’t hear anything,” Su Yunjin said mournfully, quickly dishing out a few more bowls of sorghum rice. “Husband, I’ll make a few more buns. It’s best not to buy food outside anymore; it could attract unwanted attention.”

“Yes, I know.”

Chen Jie nodded, Su Yunjin said, “Husband, you shouldn’t have told me such a secret.”

Chen Jie said, “We’re husband and wife. I don’t want misunderstandings to cause us to grow apart.”

“Husband, this is my fault. I shouldn’t have doubted you…”

“Alright, let’s not talk about it anymore.”

Su Yunjin nodded and, after thinking for a moment, told Chen Jie, “Husband, I know you have important things to do. I won’t ask you to love only me forever, just remember, there’s always a home here waiting for you.”

Chen Jie was moved and hugged her waist.

Sometimes silence speaks volumes, and everything was understood without words.

The lunch was abundant, with buns, roast chicken, and homemade pickled wild vegetables.

Ruirui ate until her face was greasy.

After finishing the meal, Chen Jie grabbed a few buns and a roast chicken and left.

“Wife, I’m off to work.”

Hearing this, Su Yunjin said, “Husband, I’ll see you off.”

When he left, Su Yunjin stood at the door watching him go.

As she turned around, she saw Ruirui gnawing on a chicken wing, saying, “Sister.”

“Hmm?”

Su Yunjin looked at her, not understanding what she wanted.

At this moment, Ruirui, with a mouth full of chicken grease, asked, “Did you fight with brother-in-law?”

“Hmm? Who said that?”

Su Yunjin frowned, puzzled.

Ruirui replied, “Who else? I heard it last night.”

Last night?!

Su Yunjin was shocked. She knew all too well what happened last night, thinking about the wildness last night. She was still sore from it!

Ruirui said, “Yes, it was last night. I heard you cry out in misery, begging brother-in-law to be gentle…”

Hearing this, Su Yunjin felt her head might explode. Did she hear everything?

Was I really that loud last night?
