”Brother-in-law!”

They weren’t even home yet when Ruirui ran up, arms open wide, ready to give Chen Jie a hug with her tiny hands.

Chen Jie laughed and asked Ruirui, ”Did you miss your brother-in-law?”

”I did!”

”Really? You’re not lying to your brother-in-law, are you?”

”If I lied, I’d be a puppy!”

Ruirui said confidently.

”Alright, I believe you.”

Chen Jie said with a chuckle. As he looked up, he saw Su Yunjin standing at the door, having just finished some work. Her hair was slightly disheveled, and there were beads of sweat on her forehead. He raised his hand to wipe the sweat off her brow.

”Husband, you’re back.”

She spoke to her husband gently.

Chen Jie smiled and replied, ”Yes.”

”Why did you buy so many things again?”

”I went to town and saw things we needed at home, so I got some.”

The three of them entered the house, starting to carry things inside. Chen Jie noticed that Su Yunjin was sweating and saw a hoe in the courtyard. He asked, ”Have you been working here?”

”The courtyard is idle, so I thought I’d till it. Then, I’ll buy some vegetable seeds and plant some veggies. It’ll be enough for our family.”

Chen Jie said, ”That sounds good, but don’t overwork yourself.”

Su Yunjin thought for a moment and said, ”Husband, I, I want you to take me to town.”

”Hmm? What’s up?”

”I want to sell some chicks and ducklings to raise them. That way, we’ll have eggs to eat in the future.”

”Alright, I’ll pick you up tomorrow to go to town.”

”Brother-in-law, I want to go too.”

”Alright, I’ll take you along as well.”

”Thank you, brother-in-law.”

They went inside, and Su Yunjin poured a glass of water for Chen Jie, who really was thirsty and drank it all in one go.

Then, Chen Jie took out the meat buns and roast chicken he bought today.

Seeing the food, Ruirui’s eyes widened with delight, and she hugged Chen Jie, saying, ”Thank you, brother-in-law, you’re the best!”

Chen Jie laughed, ”Does that mean if I don’t buy you delicious food, I’m not the best?”

Ruirui hesitated.

Finally, she said reluctantly, ”Well, maybe you’re still okay.”

”You little ingrate.”

Chen Jie pinched Ruirui’s nose, and she laughed heartily without a care in the world.

Su Yunjin said from the side, ”Husband, don’t spoil her too much. If she gets used to tasty food, she won’t even like sorghum rice anymore.”

Ruirui responded upon hearing this, ”Sister, that’s nonsense. Sorghum rice is Ruirui’s favorite.”

Chen Jie said, ”Well, since Ruirui loves sorghum rice so much, wife, why not make a pot of it for her to eat while we have the roast chicken and meat buns.”

”No way!”

Ruirui shouted urgently.

Chen Jie teased her on purpose, ”Why not? You said you love sorghum rice the most, so these meat buns and roast chicken are for sister and brother-in-law.”

”Actually, Ruirui doesn’t like sorghum rice that much anymore.”

Ruirui said weakly, then blinked her big eyes at Chen Jie, ”Just give Ruirui one meat bun, brother-in-law... Ruirui promises not to eat too much.”

Ruirui raised her hand to swear.

Chen Jie laughed.

Su Yunjin laughed too.

This little glutton~

They enjoyed a lively dinner together, and afterward, Chen Jie took out two sets of new clothes from a nearby fabric bag.

”Wife, Ruirui, come over here.”

Upon hearing his call, Su Yunjin wiped her hands clean with a rag from washing dishes. Ruirui also came into the outer room and saw the clothes in Chen Jie’s hands.

”Wow, new clothes!”

Ruirui exclaimed and pounced over joyfully.

Su Yunjin’s face lit up with a bit of surprise, but it quickly faded.

”Wife, come over and see if you like them.”

Chen Jie said with a smile to Su Yunjin.

”Husband, I don’t go out much. What’s the point of buying new clothes for me? We’re not exactly wealthy at home...”

Su Yunjin couldn’t seem to stop touching the fabric of the clothes, despite her ’complaints.’

Chen Jie asked, ”So do you like them?”

”They were expensive, weren’t they?”

Su Yunjin queried back, to which Chen Jie replied, ”The cost doesn’t matter; do you like them?”

”Of course I do! Sister, sister, do you think I’ll look good in this dress?”

Ruirui held the new dress against her body and spun around.

Su Yunjin said, ”Don’t spin like that, or you’ll dirty the hem dragging on the ground.”

Ruirui stopped and excitedly hugged Chen Jie and gave him a peck, ”Thank you, brother-in-law!”

Chen Jie laughed, ”Ah, Ruirui knows how to show gratitude, unlike some people who have no response?”

Ruirui swiftly turned her gaze towards her sister.

With both big and small eyes watching her, Su Yunjin’s cheeks suddenly flushed. She then took the clothes and ran into the inner room.

Seeing this, Chen Jie called out, ”Hey, are you just going to run off like that?”

Su Yunjin didn’t respond.

Chen Jie looked at Ruirui and said, ”We can’t learn from your sister, way too rude, isn’t it!”

”Brother-in-law, what’s considered being rude?”

Ruirui very wisely asked the question.

Chen Jie thought for a moment and said, ”Being rude means not knowing proper manners. For example, if brother-in-law buys you new clothes, you’ll be so happy that you give him a kiss, right?”

”Uh-huh.”

”So if I also bought new clothes for your sister, shouldn’t she also give brother-in-law a kiss?”

”Uh-huh, right!”

”But she didn’t keep her promise; she just ran off. Wouldn’t you say that’s rude and improper?”

”Uh-huh, you’re right, brother-in-law. It’s not proper; sister is too improper!”

Ruirui nodded seriously, then gave Chen Jie another peck and said proudly, ”Brother-in-law, doesn’t Ruirui have proper manners?”

”Yes, very proper, you’re just too proper.”

Chen Jie said with a laugh, pointing towards the inner room, ”Go and ask your sister to change into her new clothes and come out to show me. Tomorrow I’ll buy you candied haws, okay?”

”Really?”

Ruirui’s eyes widened, and Chen Jie laughed, ”Has brother-in-law ever lied to you?”

Ruirui thought for a moment and said, ”Bad brother-in-law used to lie, but the good brother-in-law now doesn’t lie.”

”So will you go?”

Chen Jie asked, and Ruirui thought it over, ”I’ll go, for the candied haws!”

”Right, for the candied haws!”

Ruirui looked at Chen Jie, ”Okay, then I’m going.”

Ruirui ran inside, and soon Su Yunjin’s voice was heard from the room.

”No way, Ruirui, we haven’t bathed for a while. After your brother-in-law leaves tomorrow, we’ll wash up and then wear the new clothes. Understand? Wearing them now will get them dirty!”

”Oh, but brother-in-law promised to buy me candied haws.”

”Oh dear, you little rascal, sold out for a candied haw!”

”No, sister. But tell me, weren’t you happy when brother-in-law bought you new clothes?”

After a brief silence, it seemed Su Yunjin said something, but from outside, Chen Jie couldn’t hear it clearly. However, he could hear Ruirui shouting inside.

”Sister, if you were happy, why didn’t you kiss brother-in-law? Doing this is, is too improper, too improper!”

Ruirui wailed in distress, and Su Yunjin was beside herself with amusement and helplessness, while Chen Jie smiled knowingly. Ruirui’s brainwashing was successful!

Soon, Su Yunjin, unable to evade Ruirui’s pestering, came outside and saw Chen Jie pouring water into the pot to heat it. She asked, ”Husband, you?”

Chen Jie replied, ”Oh, my master gave me a recipe for a medicinal bath to help with my training, so I’m heating some water.”

”Oh, then let me do it.”

Su Yunjin said, taking the ladle from his hands. As she got closer to him, she suddenly kissed him.

Chen Jie was surprised, looking at his wife.

With a deep blush on her cheeks, Su Yunjin, both shy and bold, said, ”So that little miss won’t keep saying I’m improper...”

”Husband, do you think what I did is proper?”
