The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Damien Ravenmoor arrived before sunrise.

Darius had told the seven candidates to report to the Black Dragon training yard at dawn.

Damien was there while the stars were still visible.

He stood alone beneath the Black Dragon Banner, spear planted beside him, watching mist roll across the field.

A second set of footsteps approached.

Victor Ravenshade.

Victor stopped when he saw him.

You slept here?

No.

You’re telling me you woke willingly at this hour?

Damien looked at him.

Some of us don’t need an argument with the sun before getting out of bed.

Victor dropped his training sword beside a post.

I was conserving strength.

For sleeping?

Exactly.

Damien shook his head.

More footsteps followed.

Leon Ashford came next, already dressed for training. Elias Thorn appeared a few minutes later, quiet as usual, followed by Marcus Wintermere and Julian Valcrest.

Hugo Stone was last.

Unlike the others, Hugo still had soot beneath his fingernails.

Victor looked at him.

Were you at Garrick’s forge all night?

Hugo stretched one shoulder.

Almost.

And you’re taking a knight preliminary after that?

Hugo looked at him.

Some of us work.

Victor stared at Damien.

Why is everyone attacking me this morning?

Because you’re awake.

Leon answered without looking at him.

Victor opened his mouth.

A voice behind them ended the conversation.

Line.

Seven men turned immediately.

Sir Darius Valen entered the yard.

Nobody needed to be told twice.

Kael watched from the covered walkway beside Iris Hollow and Osric Hale.

Darius had forbidden him from participating.

Kael had argued.

Darius had listened.

Then forbidden him again.

So Kael had settled for watching.

Osric held several sheets of parchment tucked beneath one arm.

At fifty-eight, the retired captain no longer moved like the younger soldiers, but there was nothing slow about his eyes. He had spent too many years keeping border armies supplied to miss small details.

Iris leaned against a wooden post.

She had already made three bets.

Kael glanced at her.

You know gambling among soldiers can create problems.

I’m not gambling, my lord.

You took two silver from Captain Roland.

That’s an investment.

In what?

His poor judgment.

Kael looked toward Captain Roland on the other side of the yard.

Roland noticed.

He pointed at Iris.

She’s a thief.

Iris smiled.

A tracker.

There’s overlap.

Osric cleared his throat.

My lord, if the prince becomes involved in the betting pool, I will be forced to record it.

Kael folded his arms.

I wasn’t planning to.

Good.

Who did you choose?

Osric’s expression did not change.

I don’t gamble.

Iris leaned toward Kael.

He chose Damien.

Osric looked at her.

You searched my desk?

I tracked your parchment.

That sentence makes no sense.

It worked.

Darius turned his head.

Iris.

She straightened.

Sir Darius.

If I hear another word from you during the examination, you will spend tomorrow tracking individual chickens through Blackwood.

Iris closed her mouth.

Kael looked away before Darius noticed him smiling.

Darius faced the seven candidates.

No armor today.

Victor looked down at his plain training clothes.

We noticed, Sir.

And yet you spoke.

Victor became silent.

Darius paced slowly before them.

You asked to prepare for the Imperial Knight Examination.

Today determines whether I allow your names to go forward.

Marcus frowned.

Allow?

Darius stopped in front of him.

Yes.

You may travel to Aurelia yourself and present your name without my endorsement if you prefer.

Marcus said nothing.

Darius continued walking.

The Empire has thousands of men who can swing swords. Hundreds can use Aura. Some can defeat men who already carry the title Sir.

None of that makes them knights.

Kael listened carefully.

He had grown up hearing Sir before countless names.

Sir Darius.

Sir Albrecht.

Sir whoever happened to be standing beside a noble that day.

When titles surrounded you from childhood, they became ordinary.

The men in front of Darius did not see the word that way.

They wanted it.

Darius stopped beneath the Black Dragon Banner.

A knight is recognized by law. Bound by oath. Judged by conduct. Your title follows your name into courts, villages, military camps and foreign kingdoms.

He looked from man to man.

If Damien Ravenmoor steals a farmer’s horse, Damien Ravenmoor is a thief.

Damien remained expressionless.

If Sir Damien Ravenmoor, sworn Black Dragon Knight of House Kael, steals that same horse, his dishonor does not stop with him.

Darius pointed toward the banner.

It touches that.

Then toward Kael.

And him.

No one moved.

That was the first time Kael had heard the proposed title spoken formally.

Sir Damien Ravenmoor.

Black Dragon Knight.

House Kael.

Something about it felt heavier than when Kael had said the words himself.

Darius continued.

Within the Imperial family, House Cassian does not mean Cassian has created another dynasty. He remains Asterion. House Elena remains part of the same bloodline. House Kael would be the political and military household built around Prince Kael Asterion.

Kael’s eyes remained on the candidates.

Darius looked at them.

If you pass the Imperial Examination and choose to swear yourselves here, your allegiance becomes public.

Not temporary.

Not something you change because another prince offers more land.

Victor’s expression lost its usual humor.

Darius stopped.

Anyone who dislikes that may leave now.

Nobody did.

Hugo Stone looked toward the banner longer than the others.

Kael noticed.

Darius did too.

But he said nothing.

The examination began.

The first test seemed almost insulting.

A table.

Seven swords.

Seven shields.

A spear.

A broken breastplate.

Two coils of rope.

A water barrel.

Darius looked at the candidates.

You have five minutes.

Victor stared at the objects.

To do what?

Prepare for battle.

What battle?

Darius said nothing.

Victor looked around.

That’s all we’re getting?

The clock has already begun.

The seven moved.

Damien took the spear first, testing the shaft before examining the point.

Leon selected a shield and sword.

Marcus immediately chose the best-looking blade.

Elias checked three before taking the least damaged one.

Julian inspected the breastplate.

Hugo didn’t touch a weapon.

He crouched beside the broken armor.

Kael leaned slightly forward.

Hugo ran two fingers over a split rivet.

Then another.

He picked up a sword and examined its edge.

Victor noticed.

What are you doing?

Hugo tossed the weapon back onto the table.

That one will break.

Victor had been reaching for it.

He stopped.

How do you know?

Wrong temper.

You’ve looked at it for two seconds.

I spend my life around steel.

Victor chose another sword.

Hugo tested the remaining shields.

Damien had begun cutting the rope into sections.

Marcus looked at him.

Why are you cutting that?

Damien did not answer.

He tied one section around the loose strap on Leon’s shield.

Leon nodded.

Useful.

Marcus frowned and returned to his weapon.

At the end of five minutes, Darius inspected every choice.

He stopped before Hugo.

No weapon.

Hugo looked at him.

The breastplate’s right shoulder is compromised, Sir. Two swords have flaws. One shield’s center grip is splitting.

That was not my question.

Hugo looked toward the weapon table.

I could take the axe.

Can you use it?

Well enough.

Well enough gets men killed.

Hugo nodded.

Yes, Sir.

Darius moved on.

Kael lowered his voice.

What is this testing?

Osric answered.

Whether they understand equipment before trusting their lives to it.

That simple?

A soldier who cannot inspect his own gear eventually becomes a corpse carrying expensive equipment.

Kael glanced at him.

You have a cheerful way of explaining things.

Border service removes poetry.

The second test brought Aura.

One at a time, the candidates stood within a circle carved into the dirt.

Darius did not ask for spectacular attacks.

He asked for control.

Marcus Wintermere went first.

Aura surged around his sword with enough force to send dust rolling across the yard.

Kael felt the strength from where he stood.

Marcus smiled.

Then Darius placed a candle three feet from the blade.

Keep the flame burning.

Marcus’s smile disappeared.

Sir?

Maintain your Aura.

Do not extinguish the candle.

Marcus tried.

The flame vanished instantly.

A few soldiers around the yard laughed.

Darius turned his head.

The laughter stopped.

Again.

Marcus reduced his Aura.

The candle died.

Again.

By the fourth attempt, sweat appeared on his forehead.

On the sixth, the flame trembled but survived.

Darius wrote something on Osric’s parchment.

Marcus left the circle irritated.

Victor stepped forward.

His Aura was weaker but steadier.

He failed twice.

Passed on the third.

Leon passed on his second attempt.

Elias took four.

Julian required five.

Damien stepped into the circle.

His Aura traveled down the length of his spear.

The candle did not move.

Not even the flame.

Darius walked closer.

More.

Damien strengthened the Aura.

The spearhead gave off a faint pressure.

The flame remained.

More.

Damien’s jaw tightened.

The dirt beneath his feet shifted.

Still the candle burned.

Darius finally raised one hand.

Enough.

Damien released the Aura.

Kael glanced toward Osric’s parchment.

Osric covered it.

No.

I wasn’t—

You were.

Kael looked offended.

Iris whispered without moving her lips.

He marked him high.

Darius’s head turned.

Iris.

She immediately pointed at Kael.

My lord asked me a question.

Traitor.

Kael murmured it too quietly for Darius to hear.

Probably.

The third test was where Victor failed.

Not officially.

Not yet.

But Kael saw it happen.

Darius divided the seven men into a mock patrol.

Iris disappeared into the woods ahead of them.

They were told only that bandits had attacked a trade route and that several villagers might still be alive.

No other instructions.

Kael remained behind.

Darius followed at a distance.

Osric went with him as recorder.

Twenty minutes passed.

Then thirty.

Kael was becoming impatient when Captain Roland appeared beside him.

You hate waiting.

Kael looked at him.

Is it that obvious?

Yes, my lord.

Kael leaned against the fence.

How long have you served in Blackwood?

Roland thought.

Long enough to remember when this yard had more weeds than soldiers.

You never tried for knighthood?

Roland smiled faintly.

No.

Why?

I wanted command.

Kael frowned.

Those aren’t mutually exclusive.

No. But I learned early that I was better at keeping twenty men organized than winning duels.

Roland looked toward the trees.

Some men want Sir because they believe it proves they matter.

Doesn’t it?

It proves something.

Not everything.

Kael thought of Iris.

Osric.

Hugo.

Garrick.

Galahad.

People whose value did not depend on titles.

A distant horn sounded.

Roland’s head turned.

They’re returning.

The first figure through the trees was Leon.

He supported Julian with one arm.

Julian’s left leg had been bound with a wooden splint.

Kael immediately straightened.

He’s hurt?

Roland looked more closely.

No blood.

Training injury.

The others emerged.

Damien carried a weighted practice dummy across his shoulders.

Elias walked beside him.

Marcus was angry.

Victor was angrier.

Darius appeared last.

Iris followed, looking far too pleased with herself.

They returned to formation.

Darius looked at Victor.

Explain.

Victor’s jaw tightened.

We found the bandit position.

That was not what I asked.

Victor glanced toward the others.

Julian was injured.

Simulated.

Victor corrected himself.

Julian was declared injured. Damien wanted to withdraw with him and the civilian.

The dummy.

Yes, Sir.

And you?

I had sight of the bandit leader.

I could have ended the fight.

Darius’s expression remained unreadable.

So you pursued.

Yes.

Leaving your unit.

Victor said nothing.

Leaving your injured man.

Silence.

Leaving the civilian you had been ordered to locate.

Victor stared straight ahead.

Yes, Sir.

Did you catch the bandit leader?

Victor’s mouth tightened.

Iris shot me.

Kael looked toward Iris.

She shrugged.

Tracker.

Darius stepped closer to Victor.

A knight is not a tournament fighter wearing better armor.

His voice was quiet.

That made everyone listen harder.

You saw glory running through the trees and forgot the people behind you.

Victor swallowed.

Sir, I thought ending the threat—

You thought about winning.

Darius’s tone never rose.

There is a difference.

Victor lowered his head.

Yes, Sir.

Darius moved on.

He questioned every candidate.

Marcus had argued with Damien’s command.

Elias had identified one of Iris’s false trails.

Leon had stayed with Julian even after Damien ordered the group to move faster.

Hugo had noticed the rope holding the practice bridge was deliberately weakened and repaired it before crossing.

Julian had kept calling out enemy positions despite his simulated injury.

The test had lasted less than an hour.

Darius extracted more from it than Kael expected.

After midday, the seven were given food and water.

They ate together beneath a tree.

Nobody joked much.

Victor sat apart.

Kael considered approaching him.

Darius stopped him with a hand against his chest.

No.

I’m only going to talk to him.

Exactly.

Kael looked at him.

He’s one of my soldiers.

Today he is a candidate being judged.

Give him room to fail without his prince rescuing his pride.

Kael looked toward Victor.

The man stared at his hands.

Kael remained where he was.

After a while, Leon sat beside Victor instead.

Neither spoke at first.

Then Victor said something Kael could not hear.

Leon answered.

Victor laughed once.

Short and bitter.

But when they stood again, Victor returned with the others.

Kael looked at Darius.

You knew Leon would do that.

I hoped.

You could have told me.

Then you would not have learned anything.

Kael disliked how often Darius was correct.

The final test had no weapons.

Darius sat beneath the Black Dragon Banner with Osric beside him.

The candidates were called individually.

Kael was allowed to remain, but Darius warned him that he would not interfere.

Damien went first.

Darius placed a single parchment on the table.

You pass the Imperial Knight Examination.

You are offered land by Prince Adrian, twice your current pay by another noble house, and command of one hundred men if you abandon House Kael.

Damien answered immediately.

I refuse.

Too fast.

Damien frowned.

Sir?

Loyalty spoken without thought is worth less than loyalty tested with thought.

Damien considered.

Darius waited.

Finally Damien spoke.

Then I ask what Prince Adrian wants from me.

Kael raised an eyebrow.

Darius did not react.

Continue.

If he wants me because I am useful, I listen. If he wants information about Blackwood, I refuse. If he wants me to betray my oath, I refuse. If he offers legitimate service that does not violate my oath, I bring the offer to Lord Kael.

Why?

Because an oath should not make a man stupid.

For the first time that day, Darius’s mouth moved slightly.

Not quite a smile.

Close.

Better.

Damien stepped away.

One by one the others entered.

The questions changed.

Marcus was asked whether he would obey Kael if Kael ordered him to burn an innocent village.

He answered that a sworn knight obeys his lord.

Darius marked something.

Marcus saw it.

Wrong answer?

Darius looked at him.

A knight’s oath is not permission to become a coward with someone else’s conscience.

Marcus went silent.

Elias was asked what he would do if another Black Dragon Knight murdered a prisoner.

Report him.

Even if he were your friend?

Especially then.

Leon was asked whether an insult to Kael justified a duel.

No, Sir.

What if the insult came from another knight?

Still no.

What if he called your lord a bastard in front of the Imperial Court?

Leon hesitated.

Kael became interested.

Leon finally answered.

I would ask Lord Kael whether he wanted me to challenge him.

Darius stared at him.

Leon added.

And hope he said yes.

Kael laughed.

Darius closed his eyes for half a second.

Acceptable.

Victor entered last.

Darius did not ask about pursuit or glory.

He asked something simpler.

Why do you want to be called Sir Victor Ravenshade?

Victor opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

For once, he had no quick answer.

Darius waited.

Victor looked toward the Black Dragon Banner.

My father served in a lord’s levy.

Kael had never heard him speak about his family.

Victor continued.

He fought seventeen years. Came home with a bad leg and no title anyone remembered.

Darius watched him.

You want what he never received.

At first.

Victor rubbed his thumb across his palm.

Now?

Victor looked uncomfortable.

Now I think I wanted people to hear Sir and assume I had become somebody important.

Darius said nothing.

Victor looked toward the training field.

I don’t think that’s enough anymore.

No.

It isn’t.

Victor nodded.

Did I fail?

Today?

Yes.

Victor breathed out through his nose.

He looked disappointed.

But he did not argue.

Darius continued.

You may test again when I believe you’re ready.

Victor looked up.

That’s it?

Were you expecting exile?

Maybe a speech.

I gave you one in the forest.

Victor almost smiled.

Yes, Sir.

He turned to leave.

Darius stopped him.

Victor.

He looked back.

Your failure today will remain between this command and the men who trained beside you.

You do not lose rank.

You do not lose standing.

You learned something before an actual civilian died because of it.

Darius leaned back.

That is a cheap price.

Victor nodded slowly.

Yes, Sir.

When he left, Kael remained quiet.

Darius looked at him.

What?

Nothing.

You are staring.

Kael thought about Victor.

Then Damien.

Then Marcus.

I understand the title better.

Good.

Kael glanced toward the banner.

Did someone test you like this?

Darius was silent long enough that Kael expected no answer.

Eventually he spoke.

My Knight Examination lasted three days.

Three?

The old format was less civilized.

I find it hard to believe your generation did anything more civilized.

Darius ignored that.

My final examiner asked whether I would surrender my sword if my lord became dishonorable.

What did you say?

Darius looked toward his hand.

I said no.

Kael blinked.

You failed?

The first time.

That surprised him more than anything else that day.

Sir Darius Valen.

The Empire’s Shield.

Battle of Ashen Fields.

Three kingdoms defeated.

No lost campaigns.

Darius had once failed his Knight Examination.

Kael smiled.

I am going to remember this forever.

Darius looked at him.

Then remember the useful part.

Which is?

A title means less if no one is willing to deny it to you.

That stayed with Kael.

Only two names received Darius’s endorsement that evening.

Damien Ravenmoor.

Leon Ashford.

Elias Thorn came close, but Darius wanted more consistent Aura control.

Julian needed physical development.

Marcus needed judgment.

Victor needed patience.

Hugo received no mark at all.

Kael found him later near Garrick Ironhand’s forge.

The sunset had turned the smoke above the chimney orange.

Hugo stood outside with his arms folded.

You withdrew.

Hugo nodded.

Why?

He looked through the open forge doors.

Garrick was inside hammering heated steel.

Each strike rang through the yard.

I want the title.

That doesn’t answer me.

Hugo looked at Kael.

My lord, if I become a knight, what do you need from me?

Kael considered.

Combat. Service. Leadership eventually.

Hugo nodded.

And what do you need from me now?

Kael looked toward the forge.

Hugo answered for him.

Weapons.

Armor.

Repairs.

Someone who understands what fifty soldiers are breaking faster than Garrick can replace it.

Kael smiled slightly.

He complains that much?

More.

Hugo continued.

I can fight. I’m not Damien. I’m not Sir Darius.

Not many are.

But I might become something Blackwood has even fewer of.

Kael understood.

A forge master for the army.

Hugo nodded.

Military forge.

Kael remembered the System’s evaluation.

Military Forge Candidate.

The System hadn’t ordered Hugo’s future.

It had recognized what was already there.

Kael placed a hand on his shoulder.

Then become good enough that knights argue over who gets to carry your swords.

Hugo looked toward Garrick.

That’s the plan.

From inside the forge, Garrick shouted.

Hugo! If you’re finished discussing your glorious future, this metal is becoming useless!

Hugo sighed.

My lord.

Go.

He disappeared inside.

Kael remained outside long enough to hear Garrick immediately begin criticizing him.

That, too, sounded like training.

The following morning, an Imperial courier arrived.

Not a merchant.

Not a local messenger.

An Imperial courier.

The golden dragon on his dark riding cloak made that clear before he reached the manor.

Captain Roland escorted him into the courtyard.

The man dismounted, knelt before Kael, and offered a sealed document.

My lord, correspondence from Aurelia.

Kael accepted it.

For me?

For Lord Kael Asterion and Sir Darius Valen, by order of General Hector Valen.

Darius stepped forward.

The courier bowed his head to him.

Sir Darius.

Kael broke the seal.

The message was short.

Hector had not wasted ink on greetings.

The Imperial military registry had received word that soldiers under the Black Dragon Banner intended to seek knighthood.

Because Darius personally served House Kael, Imperial custom prevented him from being the sole authority granting final recognition to men who would then swear themselves to the same household.

Kael read that sentence again.

Smart.

Darius nodded.

Very.

The formal examination would require outside witnesses.

Two recognized Imperial knights.

A registry official.

And, because Darius was one of the Four Imperial Shields, his preliminary endorsement would be accepted in place of several lesser qualifications.

Kael reached the final line.

He frowned.

What?

Darius asked.

Kael handed him the parchment.

Darius read it.

His expression became unreadable.

The examination would not take place in Aurelia.

Hector was sending the examination to Blackwood.

Thirty days.

Kael looked toward the training yard.

Why?

Darius folded the letter.

Politics.

That’s your answer for everything lately.

Because lately everything is politics.

Kael looked at him.

Hector wants to see what I’m building.

Possibly.

Or the Emperor does.

Possibly.

Or my siblings complained.

Almost certainly.

Kael sighed.

Darius handed the letter back.

Thirty days gives the others another chance to earn my endorsement.

Kael looked toward the barracks.

Victor was already training.

Marcus too.

Elias stood near them practicing Aura control with a candle.

Kael smiled.

They’re going to destroy my training yard.

Darius looked at the broken shields, torn ground and split practice posts.

Going to?

Fair.

Far to the east, Aurelia rose beneath the morning sun.

The Imperial Capital’s enchanted white walls stretched for nearly thirty miles, enclosing districts larger than some provincial cities.

Golden Imperial Dragon banners flew from towers that had stood for centuries.

Above the marketplaces, massive airships crossed the sky on wind crystals, their shadows moving over crowded avenues below.

At the heart of it all stood the Imperial Palace.

Inside the Hall of Dragons, General Hector Valen stood before a table covered with military reports.

A younger officer waited across from him.

You approved an examination in Blackwood rather than ordering the candidates here.

Hector continued reading.

I did.

May I ask why, General?

Hector placed the report down.

Because everyone in this palace has begun discussing fifty soldiers as though Prince Kael has raised fifty thousand.

The officer wisely stayed silent.

Hector tapped the Blackwood report.

I want facts.

Sir Darius Valen is training them.

Yes, General.

That is one fact.

Another is that two have already received his preliminary endorsement.

The officer glanced at the names.

Damien Ravenmoor.

Leon Ashford.

Hector’s finger stopped over Damien’s evaluation.

Leadership.

Political ability.

Spear talent.

Interesting.

The officer looked toward him.

Do you believe Prince Kael is preparing a private order against the Empire?

Hector finally raised his eyes.

No.

The answer came without hesitation.

That does not mean I intend to ignore him.

Hector walked toward one of the tall windows.

Aurelia stretched beneath him.

The Empire was too large to survive commanders who noticed threats only after armies had already formed.

The Black Dragon was not an army capable of threatening Aurelia.

Fifty soldiers were nothing beside Imperial legions.

But Hector understood military history.

Great forces rarely began great.

They began with standards.

Names.

Oaths.

A banner men wanted to stand beneath.

Hector looked back at the report.

And Darius Valen knew that better than almost anyone alive.

Send neutral examiners.

The officer bowed.

Yes, General.

No one from House Cassian.

No one associated with Seraphine.

No one whose family owes House Kael a favor.

The officer hesitated.

That removes quite a few knights.

Then find better ones.

Yes, General.

The officer gathered the papers.

Hector stopped him.

And make something clear.

General?

This is a Knight Examination.

Not a succession hearing.

If an Imperial heir sends someone to interfere, I want their name before sunset.

The officer bowed deeper.

Understood.

After he left, Hector remained alone.

His eyes returned to one name.

Darius.

Hector knew what most of Aurelia remembered.

Ashen Fields.

Ten thousand soldiers.

Three kingdoms.

An undefeated commander.

But battlefield victories were not what concerned him now.

Darius had spent his life learning how to take ordinary soldiers and make them believe retreat was more shameful than death.

Now he was doing it beneath Kael’s banner.

Hector folded the report.

Thirty days would tell him whether Blackwood merely had soldiers—

or whether it had begun producing men who wanted their identities tied permanently to House Kael.

There was a difference.

A dangerous one.

Back in Blackwood, Kael had not yet realized how many nobles would travel simply to watch two soldiers attempt to earn the right to put a single word before their names.

Sir.

But by evening, Galahad had already heard the news.

So had the merchants.

And somewhere inside the unfinished guild hall, someone had begun taking bets.

Iris Hollow denied everything.

No one believed her.
