The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

The second morning of the Imperial Knight Examination began without swords.

Victor Ravenshade considered that suspicious.

He stood inside the candidate preparation hall staring at the empty weapon rack assigned to Group Seven.

No sword.

No wooden sword.

No dagger.

Nothing.

He looked toward Leon Ashford.

They took everything.

Leon adjusted the leather brace around his wrist.

That was the instruction.

Exactly.

Victor lowered his voice.

Which means we’re about to need them.

Marcus Wintermere sat on a bench nearby.

You think every room without a weapon is a trap.

We trained under Sir Darius.

Marcus considered.

Fair.

Across the hall, Elias Thorn read the examination notice posted beside the entrance.

Damien Ravenmoor stood behind him.

Neither spoke.

Kael watched from the sponsor gallery above.

The preparation hall occupied one of the Coliseum’s lower interior chambers, visible through an open railing reserved for sponsors and examiners.

Sir Darius Valen stood beside Kael.

Sir Corren Valehart and Sir Maelin Ors were already below with the neutral examiners.

Lady Seris Vaelor had not yet appeared.

Sir Garran Holtane stood across the arena speaking with a group of Registry officials.

Sir Calista Veyne occupied the Imperial side near Seraphine’s section.

Kael leaned over the railing.

No weapons.

Darius nodded.

You knew.

Yes.

And didn’t tell them.

Correct.

Kael looked at him.

Do you enjoy being difficult?

Sometimes.

There it was again.

Grand Herald Ken stepped onto the central platform.

The Coliseum was not as loud as the previous day.

The crowd had learned something.

Yesterday had been easy to understand.

Run.

Lift.

Balance.

Control your weapon.

Control your Aura.

Today was different.

The Herald raised his staff.

Three hundred twenty-seven candidates remain.

The crowd applauded.

Not thunderously.

Respectfully.

Today, strength will not be your first measure.

A large wooden structure had been erected overnight across the arena floor.

Kael had noticed it from the moment he entered.

Walls.

Streets.

Several two-story facades.

A tower.

A bridge.

A market square.

Wagons.

Fences.

A small artificial stream.

It looked like someone had built half a village inside the Coliseum.

Victor stared from below.

Kael could practically hear him thinking.

The Herald continued.

Today is the Service and Judgment Trial.

Candidates will enter controlled scenarios designed to test decisions under uncertainty.

Some information given to you will be incomplete.

Some will be false.

Some people inside the trial will obey you.

Some will not.

The Coliseum grew quieter.

You are not required to solve every problem.

You are required to understand which problems belong to you.

Kael looked toward Darius.

That’s yours.

Darius glanced at him.

What?

That sounds like something you would say.

It is something every commander should know.

The Herald continued.

A candidate may pass while failing an objective.

A candidate may fail while technically completing one.

That drew murmurs.

The Herald raised his voice.

The Empire is not examining whether you can win a game.

It is examining whether another person’s life should ever be placed beneath your judgment.

Silence.

Then the gates opened.

The first trial was called The Broken Crossing.

Candidates entered in teams of six.

Not chosen by House.

Not chosen by friendship.

Randomly assigned.

That was deliberate.

Damien’s group appeared first among Blackwood’s candidates.

Not with Leon.

Not Victor.

Not Marcus.

Not Elias.

His temporary squad contained:

Damien Ravenmoor.

A noble swordsman wearing House Avenor’s red hawk.

A female Guardian from House Serrane.

A provincial spear fighter.

A young independent archer.

And a broad-shouldered candidate wearing Prince Adrian’s military colors.

Kael smiled.

Darius noticed.

Good.

Kael looked over.

You wanted this.

Of course.

Damien cannot spend the whole examination commanding people who already trust him.

Below, the six were led into the simulated village.

A Registry official handed them a sealed order.

Damien was not chosen leader.

The candidate wearing Adrian’s colors was.

Kael read the name from the public slate.

Cassor Vane — Imperial Third Legion Auxiliary

Kael immediately disliked the surname.

Darius said nothing.

Different family?

Kael asked.

Yes.

Good.

Cassor opened the order.

The magical viewing crystals suspended above the arena transmitted the written task to the audience.

A bridge has partially collapsed during evacuation. Twenty civilians remain west of the river. Enemy scouts are believed to be approaching. Recover the sealed military dispatch from the abandoned watchtower and bring it east before the signal bell.

Simple.

Too simple.

Kael already knew.

The horn sounded.

Cassor moved immediately.

Watchtower first.

The Guardian candidate frowned.

Civilians?

Dispatch has military priority.

Damien asked.

According to whose authority?

Cassor looked toward him.

The order.

Damien read it again.

It says recover the dispatch before the signal bell.

It doesn’t say civilians are expendable.

Cassor’s expression tightened.

We do both if time allows.

Kael looked toward Darius.

And there it is.

Darius nodded.

The group reached the bridge.

Half the central span had collapsed.

One narrow beam remained.

Civilians waited on the far side.

Actors.

But the candidates had been instructed to treat them as real.

One woman carried a child.

An older man had a bandaged leg.

Three others were panicking.

The watchtower stood farther west.

Cassor pointed.

Guardian stays at bridge.

Archer with her.

Rest with me.

Damien stopped.

Who’s bringing civilians across?

Guardian.

One at a time.

The Guardian candidate looked at the damaged beam.

Impossible with the injured man.

Cassor frowned.

Then he waits.

Damien stared.

No.

Cassor turned.

I am squad leader.

For the trial.

Damien answered.

Not lord of the civilians.

The crowd reacted.

Kael felt it.

Small sound.

Interest.

Cassor’s jaw hardened.

We have a military dispatch to recover.

Damien looked toward the watchtower.

How do we know it matters more than twenty people?

Because command issued the objective.

Damien’s voice remained calm.

Then command can judge me afterward.

I’m not leaving twenty people behind without first checking whether both can be done.

Kael felt pride rise before he could stop it.

Darius said nothing.

But his eyes remained on Damien.

The group split.

Not cleanly.

Cassor took the provincial spear fighter and ran toward the tower.

Damien took the Guardian.

The archer hesitated.

Then followed Damien.

The House Avenor swordsman looked between them.

Swore.

Then went with Cassor.

Damien reached the civilians.

He did not immediately move them.

He examined the bridge.

The Guardian candidate did too.

Heavy shield.

Strong build.

Good balance.

She pointed.

The west support is intact.

Damien looked beneath the broken section.

Rope?

The archer checked the abandoned wagon.

Found some.

Damien looked toward the civilians.

Who can walk?

Fourteen raised hands.

Who can cross a beam?

Fewer.

Damien nodded.

Good.

The injured man looked at him.

What about me?

Damien looked toward the Guardian.

We build support first.

The signal bell rang once.

One warning.

Time moving.

Damien did not look toward the tower.

That mattered.

Cassor reached the watchtower.

Locked door.

The provincial spear candidate rammed it.

Nothing.

House Avenor’s swordsman searched the wall.

Window.

Second floor.

Cassor looked up.

Climb.

The swordsman did.

Fast.

Efficient.

He reached the window.

Then stopped.

Smoke began pouring from inside.

The Coliseum reacted.

New complication.

Cassor shouted.

Dispatch!

The swordsman disappeared through the window.

Kael frowned.

No hesitation.

Darius watched.

Smoke thickened.

The swordsman coughed.

Then shouted from inside.

There’s someone here!

Cassor looked toward the bell.

Forget them! Get the dispatch!

Kael’s expression hardened.

There.

A choice.

The crowd heard it too.

At the bridge, Damien tied the rope around the remaining beam.

The Guardian crossed first.

Secured the far side.

They created a handline.

Able-bodied civilians crossed.

Slowly.

The archer carried the child.

Damien remained on the western bank.

One woman refused to cross.

My husband is at the mill.

Damien looked toward the marked building farther west.

How far?

She pointed.

The signal bell rang again.

Time.

Damien closed his eyes for half a heartbeat.

Then looked at the Guardian.

Continue crossing.

To the archer:

When the last walking civilian is over, take the child east and stay there.

The Guardian looked at him.

You?

Find the husband.

The Guardian frowned.

That isn’t the objective.

Damien nodded.

I know.

Kael looked toward Darius.

Is that good?

Darius did not answer.

Of course.

The viewing crystal shifted to the tower.

Cassor’s swordsman emerged through the window.

Not carrying the dispatch.

Carrying a coughing old man.

Cassor’s face went dark.

Where is it?

Inside.

Then why—

Because he was unconscious.

Cassor looked toward the smoke.

Then the bell.

The swordsman placed the old man down.

I’m going back.

Cassor grabbed his arm.

No.

The swordsman looked at him.

The dispatch—

Cassor pointed at the provincial spear candidate.

He goes.

The spear fighter stared.

Me?

Yes.

The swordsman interrupted.

He doesn’t know where—

Cassor shouted.

Go!

The spear fighter climbed.

The swordsman looked angry.

But obeyed.

Kael looked toward House Avenor’s seating.

Viscountess Mariel Avenor sat upright.

Watching her candidate closely.

No expression.

But she had seen him choose the unconscious man.

Kael remembered Marquis Oren’s advice.

Watch who nobles speak to after a loss.

Perhaps also after a difficult choice.

Damien reached the mill.

No husband.

Instead he found two actors wearing enemy scout colors.

They attacked.

No weapons were permitted.

Damien had to fight unarmed.

The first scout rushed.

Damien moved sideways.

Caught the man’s forearm.

Shoulder.

Hip.

No strike to the head.

He redirected.

The scout hit the dirt.

Second came from behind.

Damien took one blow to the shoulder.

Turned.

Blocked.

Low kick.

Not elegant.

Fast.

The scout fell to one knee.

Damien did not chase.

He stepped backward.

Hands up.

Where is the miller?

The first scout laughed.

Dead.

Damien’s expression changed.

He looked toward the actor.

Dead?

The scout pointed toward a covered shape behind the mill.

Damien approached.

A mannequin.

Clearly marked simulated corpse.

The wife had been wrong.

Or uninformed.

Or lying.

The trial did not explain which.

Damien looked toward the bridge.

Signal bell approaching.

He ran back.

No wasted time.

He had checked.

Now he knew.

The tower team finally recovered the dispatch.

But the provincial spear fighter came out coughing heavily.

The old man had survived.

The dispatch was secured.

Cassor smiled.

Then the final bell rang.

They were still west of the bridge.

Objective technically incomplete.

The sealed dispatch had not reached the eastern checkpoint.

Trial ended.

Cassor’s face collapsed.

Damien had moved nineteen civilians across.

The injured man remained west.

He had not found the missing husband alive.

And his squad had failed to deliver the military message.

Nobody had completed everything.

That was the point.

The six candidates stood before Sir Garran, Sir Maelin, and three Registry judges.

Cassor was furious.

The clerk read preliminary findings.

Military dispatch recovered.

Not delivered before signal.

Nineteen of twenty civilians evacuated east.

One injured civilian remained west but secured under protection.

One reported missing civilian confirmed dead.

Simulated tower casualty rescued.

Two enemy scouts neutralized without prohibited force.

Then Sir Garran looked at Cassor.

Why did you prioritize the tower?

Cassor answered.

Because the written order named the dispatch.

Correct.

Sir Garran looked toward Damien.

Why did you not?

Because the order did not say abandon civilians.

Cassor interrupted.

We lost the objective because he divided the team.

Sir Maelin looked at him.

No one asked you.

Cassor stopped.

Garran looked toward Damien.

Would you make the same choice again?

Damien thought.

Not exactly.

Kael leaned forward.

Interesting.

Garran asked.

What changes?

I would send the fastest climber with one escort to the tower immediately.

Keep four at the bridge initially.

Move civilians first.

Then once the bridge line is stable, send one more toward the tower if needed.

Sir Maelin asked.

And the missing husband?

Damien paused.

I went too early.

Kael’s eyebrow rose.

Damien continued.

I should have finished stabilizing the injured civilian first.

Then verified the report if time remained.

Sir Maelin nodded once.

Why did you go?

Damien looked toward the ground.

Because the wife asked.

And?

I didn’t want to be the person who ignored her if he was alive.

Sir Garran’s voice hardened.

Compassion is not command.

Damien looked up.

No, Sir.

But command without compassion becomes easy to justify.

Silence.

Kael felt that line move through the arena.

Sir Garran stared at him.

Then looked toward Darius.

Darius gave nothing.

Garran looked back.

Pass.

Damien breathed out.

Cassor stared.

Sir Garran turned toward him.

Cassor Vane.

You recovered the dispatch.

Yes, Sir.

And saved a civilian from the tower indirectly through your subordinate’s disobedience of your immediate priority.

Cassor’s jaw tightened.

Yes.

You kept your objective in mind.

Good.

You also treated every unlisted life as secondary without determining whether the order required that.

Cassor looked toward the ground.

Sir Garran continued.

A commander must understand orders.

Not worship wording.

Cassor swallowed.

Pass.

His head lifted.

With conduct warning.

The relief vanished slightly.

But he remained.

Kael looked toward Darius.

Both pass.

Yes.

Different lessons.

Exactly.

Kael liked that better than a simple right answer.

Victor’s trial came next.

He was assigned no command.

That seemed to relax him.

It should not have.

His temporary team entered a mock market square after reports of a violent criminal hiding among civilians.

Objective:

Identify and detain the armed fugitive before the bell.

No description beyond male, adult, injured left hand.

Victor immediately began scanning hands.

Darius noticed.

Good.

Kael looked.

Obvious?

Too obvious.

The market contained twenty actors.

Some merchants.

Some travelers.

One old man.

Two soldiers.

A priest.

A laborer.

A noble servant.

Several men deliberately kept hands hidden.

Victor’s squad leader was a young swordswoman wearing Countess Serrane’s crescent.

She ordered everyone to separate.

Kael frowned.

Bad?

Darius answered.

Depends.

Victor and another candidate approached a broad laborer with his left hand wrapped.

Victor stopped.

The man looked nervous.

Show me the hand.

The laborer stepped back.

Why?

Victor did not reach for him.

Good.

Because we’re looking for someone injured there.

The man looked toward the crowd.

Cut it at the tannery.

When?

Yesterday.

Witness?

My brother.

Where?

The laborer pointed toward a butcher stall.

Victor looked.

The butcher raised one hand.

Yes.

Victor nodded.

Moved on.

Efficient.

Then shouting erupted.

Another candidate had grabbed a hooded man.

His left hand was hidden.

Found him!

The squad began converging.

Victor did not.

He looked around.

Elias would have watched patterns.

Victor tried.

The hooded man protested.

A candidate pulled his sleeve.

Left hand normal.

Wrong man.

Then a woman screamed.

A merchant collapsed.

A knife at his side.

The attacker ran.

Male.

Adult.

Left hand?

Victor saw it.

Gloved.

He chased.

Old Victor.

Chase the target.

Win.

The fugitive knocked over a cart.

A child actor fell beneath one wheel.

Victor stopped.

Kael stood.

Darius did not move.

The fugitive kept running.

Victor looked toward the child.

Toward the fleeing man.

One heartbeat.

Then Victor went to the child.

He lifted the cart enough for another candidate to pull the child free.

The squad leader sprinted past.

Victor shouted.

Black coat! Left glove! Heading south lane!

Then helped move the injured child aside.

The crowd reacted.

Kael did not smile.

Not yet.

Because the fugitive escaped into the next alley.

Bell approaching.

Victor looked frustrated.

He had made the choice.

Now consequences.

The squad leader cornered the fugitive near the artificial stream.

But the criminal drew a hidden wooden knife.

One candidate rushed.

Got struck in the throat area.

Examiner called him simulated dead.

The audience gasped.

Victor arrived seconds later.

Saw the knife.

Saw the narrow lane.

The fugitive stood with water behind him.

Victor did not charge.

He looked around.

Picked up an empty market basket.

Threw it.

Not at the fugitive’s head.

At the knife arm.

The man flinched.

Squad leader moved.

Victor moved with her.

Two angles.

The fugitive retreated.

Foot hit the stream edge.

Slipped.

Victor closed.

Kicked the knife away.

Pinned the arm.

Bell rang.

One heartbeat later.

Kael looked toward the signal judge.

Did they make it?

The board displayed:

OBJECTIVE COMPLETED AFTER SIGNAL — TIME FAILURE

Victor’s face dropped.

The fugitive had been caught.

Too late.

And one candidate was simulated dead.

The judgment panel called Victor forward.

Sir Maelin sat at the center this time.

Why did you stop?

Victor knew exactly what she meant.

The child.

Yes.

Because the cart fell on her.

You were chasing the target.

Yes.

Would you stop again?

Victor looked toward the Coliseum floor.

Yes.

Why?

Old Victor might have said because it was right.

This Victor thought longer.

Because there were six of us.

I was not the only person who could continue pursuit.

Sir Maelin’s eyes sharpened.

Good.

Victor continued.

I should have called the target’s direction before lifting the cart.

That cost time.

Maelin nodded.

Anything else?

The squad split too far at the beginning.

But I didn’t challenge it.

Why not?

Victor smiled weakly.

I was happy not being in charge.

A few people laughed.

Sir Maelin did not.

That is not always harmless.

Victor’s expression sobered.

Understood.

Sir Maelin looked toward the Registry slate.

Time failure.

One simulated squad casualty.

Civilian protected.

Target eventually detained.

She looked at Victor.

Pass.

Victor exhaled.

Then Maelin added.

Ravenshade.

He stopped.

Yes, Sir?

You once abandoned a simulated injured person to chase a target.

Victor’s humor vanished.

Yes.

Today you abandoned the target.

Kael leaned forward.

Victor answered carefully.

No, Sir.

I trusted the others to keep chasing.

Sir Maelin held his gaze.

Good.

Pass confirmed.

Victor walked away.

He did not celebrate.

Kael liked that more.

In the Imperial balcony, Prince Cassian leaned forward slightly.

Seris Vaelor noticed.

Interesting?

Cassian looked toward Victor leaving the trial floor.

Darius’s candidate.

The reckless one.

Improved.

Seris nodded.

Seraphine sat several seats away.

He lost time because of a child.

Cassian looked toward her.

An injured civilian.

An actor.

During the examination.

Seraphine adjusted one glove.

A knight who hesitates for every commoner becomes useless in war.

Elena answered from the other side.

A knight who never hesitates becomes dangerous in peace.

Seraphine looked toward her.

The Coliseum is not a village council.

Elena smiled faintly.

That is precisely why today’s trial exists.

Kael could not hear the conversation from his section.

But he saw the body language.

Seraphine displeased.

Elena calm.

Cassian watching both.

Marcus Asterion farther down the Imperial row looked only at the arena.

He had begun marking candidates in a small booklet.

Scouting.

Elara, meanwhile, had asked an attendant for the civilian evacuation statistics from Damien’s trial.

Different priorities.

Exactly as Kael wanted.

Leon Ashford’s scenario looked easier.

That made it worse.

His temporary squad had to escort one wagon of medicine through a village suffering unrest.

No active enemy.

No monsters.

No collapsing bridges.

The wagon simply had to reach a healer house on the far side.

Halfway through, hungry villagers blocked the road.

An actor playing a mother stepped forward.

My son is sick.

We need medicine.

The squad leader answered.

This shipment belongs to the healer house.

She pointed.

Then give me one bottle.

The leader refused.

The crowd began shouting.

Leon looked toward the wagon.

Then the villagers.

A second actor shouted.

They always protect nobles first!

Another:

My daughter has fever!

The leader ordered the candidates into formation around the wagon.

Kael frowned.

Darius watched closely.

Leon spoke.

Wait.

The leader snapped.

Move them.

Leon looked at the medicine markings.

Healer seal.

Inventory tags.

He asked the wagon driver.

Who decides distribution?

Healer Master at destination.

Correct.

Leon looked toward the mother.

If we hand medicine out here without knowing what treats what, we can kill someone.

She shouted.

Then what do we do?

Leon pointed to another candidate.

Run ahead.

Bring a healer here.

The squad leader frowned.

We’re losing escort strength.

Leon answered.

We have no enemy.

We have civilians desperate enough to become one.

That drew a reaction.

The leader hesitated.

Then agreed.

Runner left.

The crowd remained.

Leon did not threaten them.

He sat on the front of the wagon.

Kael blinked.

What is he doing?

Waiting.

Darius answered.

Leon spoke to the mother.

What’s wrong with your son?

Fever.

How long?

Three days.

Drinking water?

Barely.

Rash?

No.

He asked questions he had probably heard Julian ask.

Not diagnosing.

Gathering information.

The mother calmed slightly.

Other villagers began speaking.

By the time the healer actor arrived, the crowd was no longer pushing.

The healer identified three urgent cases.

Two received medicine from the wagon under proper authority.

One child did not need anything in the shipment and was directed elsewhere.

The wagon then continued.

Late.

But intact.

No violence.

The panel passed Leon with high judgment marks.

Kael smiled.

Darius looked at him.

You may be proud now.

Kael stared.

Did you just—

Do not make it unpleasant.

Too late.

Marcus Wintermere’s trial almost became a disaster.

He was placed in a defensive scenario.

A noble manor gate.

Ten civilians outside.

A hostile mob approaching.

Objective:

Protect the gate until reinforcement.

Marcus’s squad leader immediately ordered the entrance barred.

Then one civilian outside shouted that his daughter was inside.

The leader refused entry.

Marcus looked toward the walls.

Mob still distant.

One minute perhaps.

The man begged.

Marcus opened the gate.

The leader shouted.

Wintermere!

Marcus ignored him long enough to pull the man inside.

Then barred it again.

That was not the disaster.

The disaster came when the mob arrived.

Actors threw clay stones.

One struck Marcus’s shoulder.

He flared Aura instinctively.

Too much.

The front line of actors recoiled.

Seris Vaelor’s head turned from across the Coliseum.

Marcus realized immediately.

Suppressed.

Good.

Then one mob actor climbed the gate.

Marcus could have hit him.

Instead grabbed the man’s clothing and lowered him inside.

The actor attacked with a wooden club.

Marcus blocked.

Another came over.

Then another.

The squad was losing the gate.

Their leader shouted.

Use force!

Marcus’s Aura surged.

Kael stood.

Darius remained still.

Marcus raised his sword arm.

No sword.

He had only his body.

Aura wrapped his fist.

Then the candle.

Kael saw it.

Marcus stopped.

Reduced output.

Caught the club.

Twisted it away.

Shoulder strike.

Enough to drop the actor.

Not break him.

Second mob member lunged.

Marcus used the stolen club to block.

No Aura.

Then shouted at the squad.

Close the inner doors!

The leader stared.

We’re supposed to hold the gate!

Marcus yelled.

Gate is already breached!

Finally.

They fell back.

Protected the civilians inside the manor facade.

The outer gate fell.

Objective wording said protect the gate until reinforcement.

They lost it.

Reinforcement horn sounded thirty seconds later.

Trial failure.

Marcus looked furious.

At himself.

Lady Seris judged him.

Why did you open the gate?

A civilian’s daughter was inside.

Did you verify his claim?

Marcus went still.

No.

Seris nodded.

First error.

Marcus swallowed.

Why did you use excessive Aura when struck by the clay projectile?

Instinct.

Second error.

Yes, Lady.

Why did you reduce it before striking the mob actor?

Marcus looked toward his hand.

Because I would’ve hurt him.

How badly?

Marcus answered honestly.

Possibly broken ribs.

Seris continued.

Why retreat from the gate?

Because holding it was already costing the interior.

Seris’s eyes sharpened.

The stated objective was the gate.

Marcus looked up.

A gate doesn’t matter more than the people behind it.

Silence.

Seris looked toward Darius.

Then back.

Correct.

Marcus blinked.

She continued.

But you reached the correct conclusion through unnecessary mistakes.

His relief vanished.

Yes, Lady.

You are physically capable.

Your judgment improves after consequences become visible.

A knight must learn to see consequences before impact.

Marcus nodded slowly.

Yes, Lady.

Seris looked toward the slate.

Pass.

Marcus breathed.

Conditional judgment warning.

Of course.

Kael smiled faintly.

Marcus still had work.

Good.

That made him real.

Elias Thorn’s trial was the quietest.

No crowd.

No collapsing structure.

No fugitive.

A room.

A prisoner kneeling.

A table.

A sealed order.

Elias entered alone.

The viewing crystals magnified the chamber for the Coliseum.

The order read:

Prisoner captured carrying enemy correspondence. Execute immediately before sunset.

The prisoner looked up.

I surrendered.

Elias stared at the order.

Then at the prisoner.

Name?

The actor blinked.

Ren Torren.

Rank?

Messenger.

Soldier?

No.

Why were you carrying correspondence?

Paid.

By whom?

Don’t know.

The bell marked time.

Elias looked at the order again.

Execute immediately.

No signature visible on the front.

He turned it over.

Blank.

Kael leaned forward.

Darius’s eyes sharpened.

Elias asked the examiner standing at the doorway.

Who issued this?

The examiner answered.

Your commanding lord.

Which lord?

Your commanding lord.

Elias stared.

Is the order lawful?

The examiner’s face remained neutral.

You were ordered to carry it out.

Elias looked toward the prisoner.

Then drew no weapon because none had been provided.

Interesting.

He asked.

Was surrender accepted?

Prisoner answered.

Yes.

By whom?

Soldiers at the eastern checkpoint.

Witnesses?

Four.

Elias stepped toward the door.

I refuse execution until the order is verified.

A loud murmur moved through the Coliseum.

The examiner spoke.

Your lord ordered it.

Elias stopped.

Then my lord can punish me after I verify whether he has lawful authority to execute a surrendered messenger without hearing.

The examiner’s voice hardened.

Refusal may end your examination.

Elias looked at him.

Then I fail.

Kael became very still.

Darius did too.

Elias continued.

If the title requires me to kill someone because I am afraid of losing the title, I should not have it.

Silence.

Actual silence.

Even the Coliseum crowd stopped moving.

Kael remembered Corren’s earlier test.

Elias had already said something similar in Blackwood.

If refusal cost knighthood, perhaps he was never meant to be Kael’s knight.

Now he was saying it before the Empire.

No House Kael protection.

No friendly examiner.

No guarantee.

Just him.

The bell rang.

Trial ended.

Sir Garran Holtane entered the chamber personally.

Elias turned.

Sir.

Garran held out his hand.

Order.

Elias gave it.

Garran turned the parchment over.

Then tore open a hidden fold along the bottom.

A second text appeared.

Execution authorization invalid without magistrate seal. Prisoner surrender recorded. Candidate must identify conflict before carrying sentence.

The Coliseum erupted.

Elias closed his eyes once.

Not relief.

Something deeper.

Sir Garran looked at him.

Why didn’t you search the parchment more carefully?

Elias opened his eyes.

I should have.

Correct.

Garran continued.

You reached the right decision without finding the legal defect.

Elias nodded.

That means your instinct was sound.

Your procedure was incomplete.

Yes, Sir.

Sir Garran held out the torn order.

A knight cannot survive on good instincts alone.

Learn the law.

Elias accepted the parchment.

Yes, Sir.

Pass.

Kael sat back.

Darius still had not moved.

But his expression had changed.

Barely.

Kael saw it.

That was enough.

By afternoon, the Service and Judgment Trial had consumed the entire Coliseum.

Not every scenario received equal public attention.

Some were run in parallel.

Magical viewing crystals shifted between the most important moments.

Candidates failed for strange reasons.

One completed a rescue but lied to the examiner afterward.

Eliminated.

Another lost every objective but refused to abandon injured civilians and received a pass because her tactical reasoning remained sound.

A noble candidate struck an actor portraying an insulting commoner after the scenario had formally ended.

Immediate disqualification.

His sponsoring Baroness left the Coliseum before the result board went up.

Another candidate discovered a supposed enemy prisoner was actually carrying forged orders intended to manipulate the squad.

High marks.

One candidate obeyed every command perfectly.

Failed.

Kael stared at that one.

Why?

Darius answered.

Never questioned contradictions.

Kael looked toward him.

You really hate blind obedience.

I hate commanders who create it more.

Kael remembered Hector.

Personal loyalty.

Institution.

Judgment.

The oath.

Everything connected.

The noble stands became more active as the day progressed.

Kael finally saw the politics beneath the examination.

Duke Renald Carthain rarely reacted.

But when one of his Guardian candidates abandoned a simulated noble treasure chest to carry two injured villagers, the Duke nodded once.

Countess Aveline Serrane took notes after her Guardian candidate challenged Damien during the bridge scenario.

Viscountess Mariel Avenor sent an attendant to identify the swordsman who had rescued the old man from the burning tower.

Marquis Oren Velmire spoke very little.

But Kael noticed his niece, Lady Ilse, writing down the names of candidates from Houses with no obvious connection to Velmire.

Scouting.

Already.

Then Kael noticed someone unfamiliar in the upper west section.

A woman in dark green formal dress.

Perhaps late forties.

Black hair streaked with white at the temples.

A gold stag-and-river clasp at her shoulder.

Lily followed his gaze.

Marchioness Sabine Greymark.

Kael glanced over.

You read quickly.

I told you.

Territory?

Central riverlands east of the capital.

Two fortified towns.

Stone quarries.

Bridge toll authority on three major crossings.

Personality?

Lily looked toward Edwin.

Edwin answered.

She dislikes waste.

Money?

Time.

People.

Interesting.

Kael watched Sabine Greymark speak to no one while studying the judgment trials.

Another future political figure.

Not wallpaper.

Good.

By sunset, the second results board rose.

Three hundred twenty-seven had begun the day.

Two hundred and seventy-nine remained.

Forty-eight eliminated.

Kael studied the Blackwood names.

Damien Ravenmoor — PASS.

Leon Ashford — PASS.

Victor Ravenshade — PASS.

Marcus Wintermere — PASS, JUDGMENT WARNING.

Elias Thorn — PASS.

Mira Solenne — PASS.

Brennar Holt — PASS.

Edric Vale—

Kael stopped.

Pass.

But there was a mark beside his name.

CONDUCT REVIEW — CLEARED WITH WARNING

Victor found it immediately.

What did he do?

Edric stood several feet away.

His expression was dark.

Mira looked at him.

You might as well tell us.

Edric exhaled.

Our scenario had a noble officer giving unlawful orders.

Victor smiled.

Of course it did.

Edric ignored him.

The officer ordered us to seize food from a village without receipt because military need outweighed compensation.

Brennar frowned.

What did you do?

Edric looked toward his House Varrow badge.

At first?

Obeyed.

Silence.

Then?

A village woman asked whether House Varrow would repay her children when winter came.

Edric’s face tightened.

I stopped.

Refused the second seizure.

Requested written requisition authority.

The officer threatened to report me.

Victor asked.

And?

Edric looked at him.

I told him to spell my name correctly.

Mira laughed.

Even Leon smiled.

Victor pointed.

That might be the first thing you’ve ever said that I like.

Edric almost smiled.

Then his expression became serious again.

I should have questioned the first order.

Darius had approached behind them.

Yes.

Edric turned.

Sir.

Why didn’t you?

Edric looked toward the House Varrow insignia.

Because the officer wore my House colors.

There it was.

The real lesson.

Darius asked.

Would you have questioned him faster under another banner?

Yes.

Good.

Edric seemed surprised.

Darius continued.

Now you know the weakness.

That does not make it harmless.

It makes it visible.

Edric nodded.

Yes, Sir.

Darius looked toward all eight.

Tomorrow begins Command and Conduct Review.

Victor groaned.

More judgment?

Different kind.

Marcus looked interested.

Teams?

Yes.

Temporary squads again.

Leadership rotation.

Damien’s eyes sharpened.

Darius continued.

Then, after command review—

Everyone waited.

Even Kael.

Darius looked toward the massive Coliseum.

Those who remain move to final Imperial Knight Determination.

And after that—

Marcus smiled.

The bracket.

Darius stared.

Marcus’s smile faded slightly.

If you reach it.

Victor looked at the results board.

Two hundred seventy-nine.

Still a lot.

Sir Corren approached.

It will get smaller.

Victor looked at him.

You say that cheerfully.

I am not competing.

Fair.

The Imperial family began leaving the Coliseum.

But not all at once.

Kael noticed Prince Marcus Asterion descend from the heir balcony.

He approached Duke Carthain.

Military conversation immediately.

Elara went toward the Registry officials responsible for healer and logistics scenarios.

Elena stopped to speak with the family of an independent candidate who had failed after protecting civilians.

Cassian remained beside Seris Vaelor, reviewing a candidate slate.

Seraphine descended with Calista.

She walked past the candidate board.

Then stopped.

Her eyes moved across House Kael’s names.

Five still there.

Kael saw her.

She saw him.

Seraphine approached.

Your candidates survived.

Kael smiled faintly.

You sound disappointed.

Curious.

Her gaze settled on Elias’s name.

The one who refused execution.

Yes.

Dangerous precedent.

Kael frowned.

Refusing an invalid execution?

Refusing command publicly.

Kael looked at her.

Those are not the same thing.

Seraphine’s smile was thin.

You believe that because you are building a House around people who question you.

Kael nodded.

Sometimes.

What happens when they decide you are wrong during war?

Then I better have a good enough commander explaining why I’m right.

Seraphine looked amused.

You really believe soldiers should debate orders?

Knights are not supposed to be mindless soldiers.

She looked toward Darius.

And you support this.

Darius answered.

Yes.

Calista stood beside Seraphine.

Her face remained unreadable.

Seraphine looked back at Kael.

We’ll see how that philosophy survives once people die because someone hesitates.

Kael’s answer came quieter.

And we’ll see how yours survives once people die because nobody does.

Seraphine’s expression cooled.

Elena’s voice came from behind them.

The examination ended for today.

Must the family continue it in the hallway?

Seraphine turned.

Elena approached.

Simple blue and white formal clothing.

No large entourage.

She looked at Kael.

Five?

All five.

Good.

Then at Darius.

You look dissatisfied.

Darius answered.

They have more work.

Elena smiled.

There he is.

Kael laughed.

Seraphine looked annoyed.

That improved his evening.

Later, back at the House Kael residence, the candidates ate together.

No one talked about winning the Coliseum.

Not at first.

They talked about mistakes.

Marcus started.

I opened the gate without verifying the man.

Victor nodded.

I forgot to call the fugitive’s direction before stopping.

Leon looked at him.

You still passed.

Doesn’t mean it was good.

Elias turned the hidden-fold execution order over in his hands.

I didn’t inspect this properly.

Damien looked toward him.

You still refused.

Could’ve refused for the wrong reason.

Damien nodded slowly.

Fair.

Leon looked toward Damien.

You went looking for a dead man.

Damien sighed.

Yes.

Victor smiled.

I would like everyone to remember that Damien Ravenmoor made a worse decision than me today.

Damien looked at him.

Your fugitive escaped because you stopped.

Temporarily.

My missing civilian was already dead.

Victor frowned.

That’s dark.

Marcus laughed.

For the first time since arriving in Aurelia, the table felt like Blackwood again.

Kael stood outside the room listening for a moment.

He did not enter.

Darius stood farther down the corridor.

Kael looked at him.

You do that too?

Sometimes.

Listening?

Checking.

Kael looked through the half-open door.

Eight candidates had traveled from Blackwood.

Different Houses.

Different loyalties.

Different reasons.

But they were learning from one another now.

That would complicate the bracket later.

Good.

It should.

Kael looked toward Darius.

Tomorrow’s worse?

Yes.

How much?

Darius thought.

Enough.

Kael sighed.

Then Darius started walking away.

Kael called after him.

You were proud of Elias.

Darius stopped.

Did not turn.

Kael smiled.

I saw your face.

Darius remained silent.

Kael’s smile widened.

Your face is readable.

Darius finally looked back.

Aura footwork at dawn.

Kael’s smile disappeared.

My leg is healed.

Good.

That’s not—

Darius walked away.

Kael stared after him.

Everyone in this city weaponized lessons.

He was beginning to miss Blackwood.

Almost.

Then he looked through the window toward the illuminated Imperial Coliseum.

Two hundred seventy-nine candidates remained.

Tomorrow they would be forced to command strangers.

Some would discover people followed them naturally.

Some would discover rank did not create leadership.

And some would learn that the hardest order to give was the one that might send someone else into danger while the person giving it remained behind.

Kael thought of Damien.

Leadership S.

Potential.

Tomorrow the Empire would begin measuring the man beneath the grade.

And after that, the Coliseum bracket would finally be close enough for everyone to start dreaming about the Golden Laurel.

That was exactly when Darius would make sure they stopped.
