By the fifth morning after Sir Maelin Ors arrived, nobody laughed when Sir Darius Valen said training began before sunrise.

Even Victor Ravenshade stopped complaining.

Mostly.

Kael considered that the clearest evidence that something had changed.

The eight candidates had settled into a rhythm that looked almost ordinary from a distance.

Damien Ravenmoor woke first.

Brennar Holt was usually second.

Leon Ashford checked equipment before breakfast.

Elias Thorn spoke little and somehow knew where everyone else had left their equipment.

Marcus Wintermere had developed a personal hatred for candles.

Victor had started carrying dried fruit because, according to him, children apparently controlled all useful information in Blackwood.

Mira Solenne sharpened both swords every evening whether she had used them or not.

And Edric Vale had stopped wearing House Varrow’s polished armor to training.

That last change interested Kael most.

Not because the armor mattered.

Because Edric had stopped arguing about it.

Kael stood on the manor balcony overlooking the training yard while Lily placed a stack of reports beside him.

She followed his gaze.

They’re improving.

Some.

You sound like Sir Darius.

Kael looked at her.

That is becoming an increasingly common insult.

Lily smiled.

The Guild needs your approval on the final opening schedule.

Kael looked at the papers.

How final?

Galahad says final.

Master Rowan says mostly final.

Then it isn’t final.

Lily’s smile widened.

Growth.

Kael sighed.

What date?

Five days after the Knight Examination.

He nodded.

Good.

Lily looked mildly surprised.

No argument?

I said we finish one thing before starting the next.

Then five days is enough?

For the opening.

Yes.

Not for every problem in existence.

Good distinction.

Kael looked down at the yard again.

The Knight Examination was now twelve days away.

The Blackwood Adventure Guild headquarters was almost complete.

The western corruption had remained contained.

No new host incidents had been reported.

Tavian’s readings from the southern field had stabilized.

Merrick Sol remained missing.

And Kael had resisted the urge to chase him.

That last achievement deserved a medal.

Possibly an Imperial title.

He glanced toward Lily.

What?

You were making a face.

Everyone needs to stop reading my face.

You have a very readable face.

Kael looked offended.

Lily left with the ledgers before he could argue.

Below, Sir Darius entered the training yard.

Every candidate straightened.

Kael looked at the sun.

Too early for breakfast.

That meant trouble.

He headed downstairs.

Darius had placed eight wooden boxes in the middle of the yard.

Each was identical.

No weapons.

No markings.

No locks.

Sir Corren Valehart stood beside him.

Sir Maelin leaned against the fence.

Registrar Elric Dane had wisely chosen to observe from beneath the awning with tea.

Tomas Pell stood beside him carrying parchment.

Kael arrived.

What are the boxes?

Darius looked toward him.

Not yours.

That was unnecessarily hostile.

Kael joined the observers anyway.

Darius faced the candidates.

You have spent five days being corrected.

Today I stop correcting you.

Victor frowned.

Forever?

No.

Victor looked disappointed.

Today.

Better.

Darius pointed toward the boxes.

Each of you takes one.

The candidates approached.

Marcus lifted his.

Heavy.

Victor shook his slightly.

Something moved inside.

Sir Maelin spoke.

Ravenshade.

Victor stopped.

I wasn’t opening it.

You were listening.

Is that forbidden?

No.

Then—

Darius.

Victor became silent.

Kael almost smiled.

Each candidate carried a box.

Darius continued.

You will travel to Thornbrook village.

Nine miles north.

You will deliver the contents to Village Head Orsa Wynn.

No box may be opened before arrival.

No candidate may exchange boxes.

You have until the second evening bell to return.

Edric looked toward the road.

All together?

Darius answered.

That is your decision.

Mira raised an eyebrow.

That sounds dangerous.

Sir Corren smiled.

Good.

Brennar looked toward the boxes.

Any other instructions?

Darius shook his head.

No.

Victor stared at him.

That is definitely dangerous.

Darius looked toward Kael.

Kael immediately raised both hands.

Don’t involve me.

Darius looked back to the candidates.

Go.

They left together.

For the first mile.

Then Edric increased his pace.

Mira noticed.

Where are you going?

Thornbrook.

We all are.

Yes.

Edric continued.

There is no requirement to arrive together.

Damien looked toward Darius far behind them.

No.

There isn’t.

Victor frowned.

That means there is definitely a reason to stay together.

Marcus looked at him.

You distrust simple instructions now?

I trained under Sir Darius.

Yes.

Brennar laughed.

Edric did not slow.

This is not a group examination.

We each have a box.

Our individual performance matters.

Mira looked toward Damien.

Your call, commander.

Damien shook his head.

I’m not commander.

Not today.

Interesting.

Mira smiled.

Then I’m leaving too.

She moved faster.

Brennar followed at a steady pace but did not try to catch them.

Victor looked at Damien.

We’re splitting?

Damien stared toward the road.

Apparently.

Leon asked.

You staying?

Yes.

Elias?

Staying.

Marcus shrugged.

I am not carrying this thing nine miles alone if I don’t have to.

Victor nodded.

Excellent argument.

Five remained together.

Three moved ahead.

Kael and the observers followed far behind on horseback.

Not close enough to intervene quickly.

Close enough to watch.

Kael looked toward Darius.

You’re testing whether they stay together.

No.

Kael waited.

Darius said nothing.

Kael stared.

You enjoy this.

Sometimes.

Sir Maelin laughed.

The first problem appeared two miles later.

A fallen tree blocked the northern road.

Recent.

Large enough that a wagon could not pass.

Edric reached it first.

Mira arrived seconds later.

Brennar farther behind.

Edric placed his box down.

We go around.

Mira examined the ditch.

Steep.

Still faster than moving that.

Edric looked toward the forest.

The ground is dry enough.

Mira shrugged.

Your boots cost more than mine.

You first.

Edric gave her a look.

Then stepped off the road.

The ditch immediately swallowed his right leg to the knee.

Mud.

Mira laughed.

Edric stared.

You knew.

I suspected.

Brennar arrived.

He looked at the fallen tree.

Then at Edric.

Then at Mira.

What happened?

Mira pointed.

Formal knight training.

Edric pulled himself free.

Brennar walked to the tree.

Could move it with three people.

Edric wiped mud from his leg.

Or walk around.

Brennar pointed toward the wagon tracks behind them.

Road is used.

Mira’s humor disappeared.

She looked toward the tree again.

Someone else will reach this.

Eventually.

Brennar placed his box safely beside the road.

I’m moving it.

Edric stared.

That could take fifteen minutes.

Maybe.

We have a deadline.

Brennar looked at him.

Then continue.

Edric hesitated.

Mira placed her box beside Brennar’s.

I’ll help.

Edric looked toward Thornbrook.

Then toward them.

For a moment, Kael thought he would leave.

Instead he sighed.

If we miss the bell, I am blaming both of you.

Mira smiled.

Naturally.

The three worked.

No Aura at first.

Brennar found leverage.

Mira cut smaller branches.

Edric cleared the ditch edge so the trunk had somewhere to roll.

When the remaining five candidates arrived, Victor stopped.

You started without us.

Mira looked at the tree.

You are welcome to complain or lift.

Victor put down his box.

Lift.

Marcus used a small burst of Aura.

Controlled.

Leon and Damien took the heavier trunk section.

Elias checked that nobody’s boxes had shifted into the road.

Eight candidates moved the tree.

Together.

Seven minutes.

Edric looked irritated.

That was faster than expected.

Brennar smiled.

People often are.

Kael looked toward Sir Maelin.

Was that arranged?

No.

Again?

She looked at him.

Life is remarkably good at creating examinations without our assistance.

Darius said nothing.

He was watching Edric.

The second problem was arranged.

Kael knew because he recognized Captain Roland pretending to be injured.

Poorly.

Roland sat beside an overturned cart three miles farther north with one boot removed and a strip of cloth tied around his ankle.

Victor stopped.

That is Captain Roland.

Roland looked offended.

I am a merchant.

Victor stared.

You are wearing Black Dragon trousers.

Roland looked down.

Damn.

Sir Corren covered his face far behind them.

Darius’s expression became dangerous.

Captain Roland apparently had not been selected for his acting ability.

Damien approached anyway.

What happened, merchant?

Roland looked relieved someone was cooperating.

My cart overturned.

Ankle injured.

Need help.

Mira stared at him.

You’re terrible at this.

Roland sighed.

Just do the exercise.

Victor laughed.

Even Darius closed his eyes.

Kael enjoyed every second.

The cart was real.

The broken axle was not.

Roland’s injury was simulated.

The candidates understood the point quickly.

Time.

Responsibility.

Boxes.

Mission priority.

Edric spoke first.

We cannot lose another fifteen minutes.

Leon looked at him.

You would leave him?

He is not actually injured.

Mira shook her head.

You’re thinking about the exercise.

Not the scenario.

Edric’s jaw tightened.

Fine.

If he were actually injured, I would leave two people and continue with six.

Damien looked at him.

Who?

Victor answered.

Not me.

Everyone ignored him.

Edric looked around.

Two weakest travelers.

Marcus frowned.

Meaning?

Whoever slows the mission least by staying.

Brennar nodded slowly.

Not necessarily wrong.

Leon looked toward Roland.

What about the cart?

Mission doesn’t say anything about the cart.

Edric answered.

Damien crouched beside the simulated injured ankle.

If this were real, first determine whether he can travel.

Roland nodded.

Cannot walk.

Damien looked toward the others.

Then one stays.

One returns to nearest settlement for help.

Leon frowned.

Why not two stay?

Because that removes two candidates from the delivery.

Mira crossed her arms.

And one man alone with an injured stranger if something else happens.

Elias spoke.

Leave someone capable of defending both.

Everyone looked at him.

He pointed toward Brennar.

Experienced guard captain.

Brennar raised an eyebrow.

Thank you, I think.

Elias continued.

One fast person goes back.

Victor.

Victor looked offended.

Why am I always running?

Because you are good at it.

Victor considered.

Acceptable.

Damien nodded.

Brennar stays.

Victor runs back.

Remaining six deliver.

Brennar looked toward Darius in the distance.

Do we actually do that?

Darius shouted.

Yes.

Victor stared.

You could hear us?

Darius did not answer.

Victor handed his box to—

Then stopped.

No exchange.

He stared at it.

I have to run three miles carrying this.

Elias nodded.

Yes.

Victor sighed.

I should stop volunteering opinions.

He ran.

Brennar sat beside Roland.

Roland looked at him.

Nice weather.

Brennar looked toward the sky.

You are enjoying this too much.

A little.

The remaining six continued.

Kael watched them disappear up the road.

Then looked toward Darius.

Brennar is out of the delivery now.

Yes.

Victor too.

Yes.

Then they fail?

Darius looked at him.

You continue assuming the box is the test.

Kael hated that answer.

Thornbrook stood between two low hills surrounded by orchards and grazing land.

The six remaining candidates arrived before midday.

Village Head Orsa Wynn waited near the old meeting hall.

She was a broad woman in her sixties with white hair tied into a knot and the posture of someone who had spent forty years telling farmers when they were wrong.

Damien approached.

Mistress Wynn?

Yes.

Delivery from Blackwood.

Boxes?

Yes.

She pointed toward a table.

There.

They placed six boxes down.

Orsa counted.

Six.

There were eight candidates.

Edric’s expression tightened.

Two stayed behind to assist an injured traveler.

Orsa nodded.

Then she looked toward the boxes.

Open them.

The candidates stared.

Mira smiled.

Of course.

Each opened their box.

Damien’s contained twelve iron nails.

Leon found a coil of thread.

Marcus had three small stones.

Elias had a sealed packet of herb seeds.

Mira’s contained an empty glass bottle.

Edric’s contained nothing.

He stared inside.

Empty.

His expression changed.

What is this?

Orsa looked at the boxes.

Supplies.

Edric stared.

Mine is empty.

Then you delivered an empty box.

He looked toward Darius, who had just reached the village with the observers.

This cannot be the test.

Darius dismounted.

Why?

Because the contents are meaningless.

Darius looked toward the table.

To you.

Orsa picked up Damien’s nails.

Blacksmith requested these three days ago.

Then Leon’s thread.

Midwife.

The stones?

Markers for irrigation measurements.

Seeds?

Bram sent them.

The bottle?

Healer sample container.

Then she looked at Edric’s empty box.

And this was requested by me.

Edric frowned.

Why?

My granddaughter needs a box for her winter ribbons.

Victor would have laughed himself unconscious if he were present.

Kael almost did it for him.

Edric stared at the box.

So every delivery was real.

Yes.

Darius answered.

Edric’s face tightened.

Then what happens to Brennar and Victor’s boxes?

Darius looked toward the road.

That is their problem.

Brennar’s box contained medicine.

He discovered that when Roland suddenly stopped pretending.

The captain looked at the wooden box beside him.

You should probably open that.

Brennar stared.

Sir Darius said not before Thornbrook.

Roland nodded.

Good.

Brennar looked at him suspiciously.

Why are you telling me to violate the order?

Roland shrugged.

I’m an injured merchant.

Brennar stared for several seconds.

Then he left it closed.

Sir Maelin, observing nearby, wrote something.

Roland leaned back.

You made the right choice.

Brennar looked at him.

Which was?

Not listening to a stranger who tells you to break your mission instructions.

Roland smiled.

Brennar’s expression flattened.

I dislike Blackwood.

That means you’re settling in.

Victor reached the previous settlement breathless.

There was no help waiting.

Naturally.

Instead he found Captain Roland’s horse tied near a stable.

And a note.

Victor read it.

If you came for help, take the horse.

He looked around.

Nobody.

Then at his box.

Then the horse.

You people are evil.

He mounted.

Rode back.

Reached Brennar and Roland.

Roland stood.

Ankle miraculously healed.

Victor stared.

Of course.

Brennar stood too.

Roland looked toward both.

Continue.

Victor pointed.

You’re healed.

Yes.

The cart?

Roland pulled the false broken pin from the axle.

Also healed.

Victor’s face became empty.

I am going to become a knight purely so I can legally complain about this entire institution.

Brennar laughed.

They mounted the cart.

Reached Thornbrook well before the second evening bell.

Their boxes remained unopened.

Orsa Wynn received them.

Brennar’s contained a packet of dried medicinal bark.

Victor’s contained a child’s wooden whistle.

Victor stared.

I ran six miles for a whistle.

Orsa took it.

My grandson lost his.

Victor looked toward Darius.

Darius’s face remained stone.

Victor muttered something no knight examiner was meant to hear.

Sir Maelin definitely heard.

She smiled.

They ate in Thornbrook.

All eight.

Kael joined them.

No noble table.

No examination distance.

Stew.

Dark bread.

Roasted onions.

Edric sat quieter than usual.

Mira noticed.

You look wounded.

My box was empty.

Your soul survived.

Barely.

Victor held his bowl.

I carried a whistle.

Brennar looked toward him.

You also got a horse.

Eventually.

Darius entered last.

Conversation stopped.

He took a bowl.

Sat.

Victor stared.

You’re eating with us?

Darius looked at him.

Would you prefer I leave?

No, Sir.

Good.

They ate another minute.

Then Darius spoke.

Who failed?

Silence.

Marcus looked around.

Today?

Yes.

Nobody answered.

Darius looked toward Edric.

Vale.

Edric thought.

Me.

Kael looked over.

Darius asked.

Why?

I focused on arrival more than the road.

Partly.

Edric continued.

I would have left the fallen tree.

Yes.

And I treated the injured traveler as an obstacle instead of responsibility.

Darius nodded.

Did you fail?

Edric hesitated.

I don’t know.

Correct.

Darius looked toward Victor.

Who failed?

Victor frowned.

Nobody?

Darius waited.

Victor continued.

Or everyone at different moments.

Closer.

Sir Maelin entered and sat near the end of the table.

Darius looked across all eight.

You continue treating failure like a final result.

It isn’t.

The official examination has pass and fail.

Training does not.

He looked toward Edric.

You made poor decisions.

Then corrected some.

He looked toward Damien.

You let the group split without discussing why.

Damien’s expression tightened.

Then adapted when circumstances changed.

Leon.

You followed Damien too easily early in the march.

Later you challenged Edric when you believed his judgment endangered someone.

Leon nodded.

Marcus.

You used Aura once.

Correctly.

Marcus tried not to smile.

Darius continued.

Do not become proud of basic competence.

The smile died.

Victor laughed.

Darius looked at him.

You ran back for help without arguing for more than approximately twenty seconds.

Victor stopped laughing.

Improvement.

Thank you, Sir.

That was not praise.

Of course.

Mira smiled into her stew.

Darius looked toward her.

You enjoyed everyone else’s mistakes too much.

Mira’s spoon stopped.

I—

That is dangerous when eventually one of them is your commander.

Or you are theirs.

Her expression became serious.

Yes, Sir.

Elias.

You allowed others to solve every visible problem while you observed.

Observation is useful.

Inaction can become comfortable.

Elias nodded slowly.

Brennar.

You defaulted to helping because service is familiar to you.

Good instinct.

But you never asked whether staying behind was strategically correct until after you volunteered.

Brennar’s brow furrowed.

Darius continued.

Experience can become another habit.

Brennar nodded.

Understood.

Then Darius looked at everyone.

Twelve days remain.

Tomorrow there is no training.

Victor nearly dropped his spoon.

What?

Darius ignored him.

You will rest.

Repair equipment.

Write letters.

Visit the settlement.

Do whatever reminds you that becoming a knight is not the only event occurring in the world.

Victor looked suspicious.

Is rest another test?

Darius stared at him.

Everything has damaged you.

Mira laughed.

Kael did too.

The rest day caused more trouble than training.

Marcus went to the forge.

Not to practice.

To help Hugo Stone move iron stock.

Hugo stared when Marcus arrived.

Sir Darius sent you?

No.

Then why are you here?

I have nothing else to do.

Hugo looked toward the mountain of iron bars.

Now you do.

Marcus spent four hours moving metal.

No Aura.

Garrick Ironhand insisted.

If you need magic to carry everything, you’ll never know what your back can actually handle.

Marcus hated him by midday.

Respected him by evening.

Leon visited the central settlement.

Kael found him helping Rowan’s workers install doors inside the Guild headquarters.

Kael stopped.

You’re supposed to be resting.

Leon held a hinge.

This is easier than training.

Master Rowan shouted from across the hall.

Stop talking and hold it straight.

Leon immediately adjusted.

Kael smiled.

Restful.

Leon looked at him.

Very, my lord.

Elias disappeared.

Iris found him sitting outside Meadowfen with the six-year-old girl who had helped Victor solve the sheep theft.

She was showing Elias how to whistle.

He was terrible.

Iris stood behind him.

Tracker.

Elias looked over.

What?

Nothing.

He returned to failing at the whistle.

Iris smiled.

Some people learned observation from footprints.

Others from children.

Victor spent his rest day sleeping until noon.

That was apparently the healthiest decision anyone made.

Then he went to the market.

Kael encountered him arguing with a fruit seller.

Two copper.

Three.

Two.

Three.

You gave me two yesterday.

Yesterday’s apples were smaller.

Victor looked at Kael.

My lord.

Kael immediately stepped away.

Do not involve me.

Victor looked betrayed.

The fruit seller smiled.

Three copper.

Victor paid.

Kael considered it a valuable economic lesson.

Mira Solenne went to the Guild.

Galahad Charney found her studying the quest boards.

You an adventurer?

Sometimes.

Registered?

Not here.

Elsewhere?

Rivergate Guild.

Rank?

Galahad raised an eyebrow.

Knight candidate and C-rank adventurer.

Mira shrugged.

Food costs money.

Interesting.

She looked toward the nearly completed ranking counter.

You’re opening soon.

After the Knight Examination.

Mira glanced toward him.

Taking applications?

Eventually.

Galahad smiled.

Thinking of staying?

Mira looked around Blackwood’s new Guild hall.

Maybe.

That answer would matter later.

Not now.

Brennar wrote letters.

Three.

One to his provincial commander.

One to his wife.

One to his eldest daughter.

He told them Blackwood was stranger than expected.

He did not say whether he thought he would pass.

Because for the first time since applying, he was unsure.

And strangely, that made him want the title more carefully.

Edric Vale received a letter.

That one became a problem.

Kael did not know until evening.

Edric came to Blackwood Manor carrying the sealed parchment.

He requested to speak with Sir Darius.

Kael happened to be there.

Darius looked toward Edric.

Problem?

Edric held out the letter.

House Varrow.

Darius did not take it.

What about it?

My lord has given me instructions.

Related to the examination?

Yes.

Then explain.

Edric looked toward Kael.

Kael folded his arms.

If this concerns my House, say it.

Edric breathed out.

Lord Varrow expects me to pass.

Reasonable.

Darius answered.

Edric continued.

And afterward, I am to seek private conversation with any Black Dragon candidate who also passes.

Kael’s expression changed.

For what?

Recruitment.

Silence.

Darius did not look surprised.

Kael did.

To House Varrow?

Yes, my lord.

Even Damien and Leon?

Any candidate who has not yet sworn House Kael’s oath.

Legally, that was allowed.

Kael knew it.

He disliked it anyway.

Edric continued.

There is more.

Of course there is.

Edric unfolded the letter.

Lord Varrow has offered land grants and officer appointments for suitable candidates.

Kael looked toward Darius.

That is aggressive.

It is politics.

Darius replied.

Edric looked uncomfortable.

I did not want to hide it.

Kael studied him.

Why tell us?

Because five days ago I would have considered it ordinary.

And now?

Edric glanced toward the Black Dragon Banner outside.

Now it feels like I would be using the examination to undermine the people training beside me.

Darius corrected.

Recruitment is not automatically undermining them.

Kael looked over.

You’re defending it?

I am defining it.

He looked toward Edric.

If Lord Varrow honestly offers service after a candidate becomes a knight, the candidate is free to hear it.

If you pressure them during training, conceal the offer, sabotage their House Kael oath, or pretend friendship solely to recruit them—

Darius’s voice hardened.

—that is different.

Edric nodded.

Understood.

Kael looked at him.

What do you intend to do?

Edric stared at the letter.

I haven’t decided.

Kael could have told him to refuse.

He did not.

That surprised himself.

Then decide before the examination.

Edric looked up.

My lord?

You serve House Varrow.

I don’t expect you to betray your lord because you’re training in Blackwood.

But don’t pretend you don’t have competing obligations.

Edric slowly nodded.

Thank you.

Kael looked at Darius after Edric left.

I hated every second of that.

Good.

Kael frowned.

You are becoming predictable.

Darius looked toward the door.

That situation is exactly why oaths matter.

Kael understood.

Edric’s loyalty to House Varrow was not automatically evil.

It was simply real.

And real loyalties collided.

The next morning, Sir Darius assembled only the five Black Dragon candidates.

Damien.

Leon.

Victor.

Marcus.

Elias.

Kael arrived expecting another exercise.

Instead Darius held five copies of House Kael’s oath.

He handed one to each.

Read it again.

Victor looked confused.

We already did.

Again.

They read.

Darius waited.

Then spoke.

House Varrow intends to recruit any candidate who passes before a household oath is sworn.

Every face changed.

Damien looked at Kael.

Leon looked toward Darius.

Marcus frowned.

Victor looked offended.

Elias simply read the oath again.

Darius continued.

You are free to listen.

Victor blinked.

What?

Kael remained silent.

This needed to come from Darius.

No candidate here owes House Kael knighthood simply because Blackwood trained him.

If you pass, you may hear any lawful offer.

House Varrow.

Another House.

Imperial service.

Independent service.

Victor looked toward Kael.

My lord?

Kael forced himself to say it.

He’s right.

Victor stared.

You don’t care if we leave?

That question landed harder than Kael expected.

Of course I care.

Kael stepped closer.

But if the only reason you stay is because I prevented you from hearing better opportunities, then your oath means nothing.

Silence.

Damien lowered his parchment.

House Varrow can offer land.

Kael nodded.

Probably.

Officer rank?

Possibly.

Money?

Yes.

Victor looked at the oath.

Can House Kael?

Kael answered honestly.

Not all of that.

Not right now.

Nobody spoke.

That was important too.

Blackwood was growing.

Not wealthy.

Not ancient.

Not prestigious enough to compete with every noble House in coin or land.

Kael looked at all five.

I can offer you what is written there.

Protection.

Fair judgment.

Worthy command.

Remembrance.

And a place in what Blackwood becomes.

Marcus looked toward the banner.

Not what it already is.

No.

Kael answered.

What it becomes.

Darius watched him.

Victor smiled faintly.

That sounded suspiciously like recruitment.

Kael looked at him.

I am allowed.

Apparently.

The tension eased.

Then Damien folded his oath.

If I pass, I’m staying.

Darius immediately spoke.

Do not decide today.

Damien frowned.

I already know.

Then know again after you pass.

Damien looked confused.

Darius continued.

A choice made before alternatives exist is easy.

Make it when leaving actually costs you something.

That silenced him.

Leon slowly nodded.

Marcus looked thoughtful.

Victor looked annoyed by how reasonable it was.

Elias folded his copy.

Good.

Darius looked at all five.

Eleven days remain.

Train.

Pass.

Then decide what the title is worth to you.

Kael remained in the yard after everyone left.

Darius stood beside him.

The Black Dragon Banner moved above the wall.

Kael looked toward it.

You knew this would happen eventually.

Yes.

Other Houses recruiting my people.

Yes.

I don’t like it.

No ruler does.

Kael looked toward him.

Did anyone try to recruit you away from my mother?

Many.

What did they offer?

Land.

Commands.

Gold.

Titles.

Kael raised an eyebrow.

And?

Darius looked toward the banner.

I had already given my word.

Simple.

Not easy.

Kael understood the distinction.

A Black Dragon Knight oath would mean more if someone had genuinely been free to walk away before saying it.

Kael looked toward the Guild headquarters visible beyond the settlement roofs.

Almost finished.

Then toward the training yard.

Almost examination time.

Then toward the road leading beyond Blackwood.

Merrick remained out there.

The Sanctum remained beyond the mountains.

His siblings remained in Aurelia.

The world was not waiting for Blackwood to become ready.

But for once, Kael did not feel like he needed to chase every moving piece.

Eleven days.

One examination.

One unfinished Guild.

One step at a time.

Darius started walking away.

Kael looked over.

Where are you going?

Training.

I thought today was rest.

Yesterday was rest.

Kael frowned.

For them.

Not you.

Darius looked back.

You injured your leg.

It’s healed enough.

Julian disagrees.

Julian always disagrees.

Darius smiled faintly.

Then perhaps you should listen to your healer.

Kael stared.

You were going to train me.

Eventually.

Kael followed.

What are we doing?

Darius’s smile disappeared.

Aura footwork.

Kael stopped.

For how long?

Until you stop tearing your leg every time you use Night Frost Step.

Kael looked toward the manor.

Suddenly paperwork seemed appealing.

Darius continued walking.

Kael sighed and followed.

Behind them, the Black Dragon Banner remained above the yard.

Five candidates still wanted the title.

But now they knew that if they passed, Blackwood would not be the only place willing to call them Sir.

That was exactly why the choice afterward would matter.
