Thirty days sounded generous until Darius turned them into a schedule.

By the second morning after Hector Valen’s letter arrived, the Black Dragon training yard had become unbearable.

Victor Ravenshade was running weighted laps.

Marcus Wintermere had burned through eleven candles trying to refine his Aura control.

Elias Thorn had stopped speaking almost entirely during training because every unnecessary breath earned another correction from Darius.

Leon Ashford and Damien Ravenmoor had received preliminary endorsement, but Darius showed them no mercy for it.

If anything, he became worse.

Kael stood beneath the covered walkway, watching Leon hold a defensive stance while Damien struck his shield again and again.

Twenty-seven.

Damien’s spear slammed into the shield.

Twenty-eight.

Leon slid backward half a step.

Darius immediately noticed.

Again.

Leon looked toward him.

Sir Darius, that was twenty-eight.

It was.

You said thirty.

I did.

Leon waited.

Darius looked at the dirt where Leon’s heel had moved.

You also broke your stance.

Victor passed behind them carrying a weighted pack.

He muttered without slowing.

Should have stayed unendorsed.

Darius turned his head.

Victor.

Victor immediately began running faster.

Kael smiled.

He was beginning to understand why the Black Dragon spoke differently whenever Darius entered a room.

Not fear exactly.

Respect mixed with the knowledge that excuses simply did not survive long around him.

Iris Hollow appeared beside Kael so quietly that he almost reached for his sword.

Morning, my lord.

Kael looked at her.

You do that deliberately.

Do what?

Appear without making noise.

I’m a tracker.

That excuse is becoming very convenient.

Iris smiled.

She held out a folded parchment.

Master Merrow asked me to give you this.

Kael opened it.

There were four words.

I am done waiting.

Kael stared at the page.

That’s the entire message?

Iris nodded.

He wrote three drafts.

What happened to the others?

He called them unnecessarily polite.

Kael folded the parchment.

Where is he?

Already at the western road.

Of course he is.

Behind them, Darius’s voice carried across the yard.

Damien. Leon. Enough.

Both men lowered their weapons.

Darius walked toward Kael.

Iris held up both hands.

I delivered the message, Sir Darius. I had nothing to do with its tone.

Darius looked at the paper in Kael’s hand.

Merrow?

Kael handed it over.

Darius read it once.

At least he’s concise.

That is the nicest thing you’ve said about him.

Don’t repeat it.

Kael looked toward the training field.

We’re going today.

Darius nodded.

I assumed we would.

Who comes?

Darius considered the yard.

Iris.

She straightened.

My lord.

Hugo Stone.

From the forge?

If Tavian wants samples removed from an ancient structure, I would rather have someone who understands materials standing beside him.

Kael nodded.

Damien.

Damien looked over.

Sir?

Prepare field equipment.

Yes, Sir.

Leon started to step forward.

Darius stopped him.

You remain.

Leon frowned.

Why Damien?

Because Blackwood still needs trained men when Kael leaves.

Leon glanced toward Damien.

Damien said nothing.

But Kael saw the small look between them.

Competition.

Not hostility.

That was good.

Darius added six more Black Dragon soldiers, then looked toward Kael.

Grom stays.

Kael almost laughed.

You intend to tell him?

No.

Then how—

Grom’s voice came from behind them.

Tell me what?

Kael closed his eyes.

Iris immediately looked away.

Grom Ironfang walked into the yard carrying his spear and a bowl of something steaming.

His bandages remained beneath his armor.

He looked at Darius.

Why do I feel insulted?

Darius answered without hesitation.

Because you’re staying in Blackwood.

Grom stopped eating.

No.

Yes.

I’m seventy-four, not dead.

Your wound reopened three days ago.

It closed again.

Because the healer stitched it again.

Grom looked at Kael.

My lord.

Don’t.

You haven’t heard my argument.

I have.

What is it?

You’re seventy-four, not dead.

Grom frowned.

That was most of it.

Kael pointed toward the settlement.

Stay.

Help Galahad keep the new adventurers from doing anything stupid.

That may be harder than fighting underground machines.

Exactly.

Grom stared at him.

Then slowly returned to his breakfast.

Fine.

Kael blinked.

That easy?

No.

Grom walked away.

I’m simply planning my revenge.

Darius watched him leave.

That went better than expected.

Kael looked at him.

We’re going to regret this.

Almost certainly.

The western road had changed since Kael’s last visit.

Black Dragon patrols now marked the route.

Two temporary watch posts stood near the edge of the forest.

Osric Hale had personally reorganized the patrol schedule after the cave was sealed, ensuring that no pair remained isolated longer than four hours.

Kael had learned about that only because he had asked why his supply expenses had increased.

Osric’s answer had been simple.

Men standing watch still need to eat, my lord.

Kael had approved the expense.

Now, riding west through Blackwood, he understood the value.

The road no longer felt abandoned.

At the final watch post, Elias Thorn waited with four soldiers.

He saluted.

My lord. Sir Darius.

Darius dismounted.

Report.

Nothing entered the cave.

No tracks approaching from the west?

Elias shook his head.

Iris checked yesterday. One deer trail. Two foxes. No human movement.

Kael glanced at Iris.

You didn’t mention that.

You didn’t ask.

Darius looked at her.

She corrected herself.

My lord.

Kael smirked.

Better.

Tavian Merrow stood several yards away surrounded by three wooden cases.

He had changed clothes for the expedition.

The gray traveling coat was gone.

In its place he wore fitted black garments beneath a dark leather vest covered in pockets, clasps, thin metal plates, and small crystal instruments.

Kael looked him over.

You look prepared to rob a laboratory.

Tavian adjusted his crystal lenses.

I have robbed laboratories dressed worse than this.

Darius stared at him.

Tavian sighed.

Legally ambiguous borrowing.

Kael looked toward the three cases.

What is all that?

Equipment.

That answer explains nothing.

Good equipment.

Tavian pointed toward one case.

Mana resonance instruments.

Another.

Containment materials.

The third.

Food.

Kael raised an eyebrow.

Tavian looked offended.

Magical research is hungry work.

Hugo Stone approached from behind the cases.

He had been examining the metal clasps.

Master Merrow.

Tavian looked at him.

Yes?

Your silver locking plate is warped.

It is not.

Hugo tapped it once.

The plate shifted.

Tavian stared.

Hugo continued.

If we hit rough ground, this side opens.

Tavian crouched immediately.

For the next minute neither man acknowledged anyone else.

Kael looked toward Darius.

This might work.

Darius’s gaze remained on Tavian.

Or they kill each other before sunset.

Either way, we’ll learn something.

The sealed cave lay in western Blackwood, beyond the last cultivated village and several miles inside the old forest.

Kael had never cared much about that geography when Blackwood was merely land his father had given him.

Now every mile mattered.

A village too far from the central settlement needed another patrol route.

A road through a forest needed maintenance.

A river crossing needed a bridge.

A cave beneath the western frontier could threaten everyone living east of it.

Land was no longer empty space on a map.

People lived on it.

By the time the group reached the cave, Tavian had asked Kael fourteen questions.

How old were the ruins?

Unknown.

Who had discovered them?

Kael’s people.

Which people?

Kael ignored that one.

Had anyone attempted translation?

The System had failed.

Did the System fail completely?

Yes.

Did the ancient device react to Kael’s Light?

Yes.

How strongly?

Kael finally turned in the saddle.

You’re going to see it.

I prefer not to learn dangerous facts while standing beside the dangerous object.

That’s remarkably sensible.

Tavian frowned.

Why does everyone sound surprised when I say sensible things?

Hugo answered from behind him.

Because we’ve met you.

Damien coughed to hide a laugh.

Tavian looked back.

You have known me for two hours.

Long two hours.

Kael decided Hugo was becoming one of his favorite soldiers.

Darius inspected the cave entrance before anyone entered.

Elias and two soldiers removed the outer timber.

Iris crouched near the ground.

Kael watched her hands move across dust and loose stone.

Anything?

No recent human tracks.

Tavian looked around.

Why human specifically?

Because I already see animal tracks.

Where?

Iris pointed.

Tavian leaned closer.

He saw nothing.

Iris moved her finger three inches.

There.

Still nothing.

She stood.

That’s why I’m the tracker.

Tavian watched her walk away.

Useful woman.

Damien adjusted his spear.

Very.

Kael looked toward Iris.

He wanted his people to become known for things like that.

Not merely Black Dragon soldier.

Iris Hollow, tracker.

Hugo Stone, smith.

Damien Ravenmoor, commander candidate.

Osric Hale, veteran logistician.

Victor with his reckless courage.

Leon with his steadiness.

Names readers—or citizens—could attach to faces and reputations.

An army became more dangerous when it stopped being anonymous even to itself.

Darius entered first.

Kael followed.

No one needed to say why.

The underground stairway remained intact.

Broken constructs still littered portions of the descent.

Tavian stopped at the first one.

He crouched.

Darius kept walking.

Merrow.

One minute.

Thirty seconds.

Tavian looked at Kael.

Does he time everyone?

Yes.

Terrible man.

Damien spoke from behind them.

He can hear you.

I know.

Tavian ran a small crystal over the construct’s broken chest.

No reaction.

He opened a thin metal probe.

Hugo leaned over his shoulder.

Don’t touch the purple residue.

I wasn’t going to.

You were leaning toward it.

That isn’t touching.

Hugo pointed toward the probe.

That is.

Tavian looked at the probe.

Then Hugo.

You’re irritating.

I’ve heard.

Kael crossed his arms.

Twenty seconds.

Tavian stared at him.

You’ve joined him.

I learn from the best.

Tavian collected a fragment from the outer armor instead and sealed it in a glass vial.

Done.

Darius continued.

Tavian hurried after them.

The deeper they went, the less he spoke.

That surprised Kael.

Tavian had barely been silent since arriving in Blackwood.

But when they reached the first section of worked stone, something changed.

He ran his fingers near the carvings without touching them.

His eyes moved slowly over every line.

At the sun-and-wing symbol, he stopped.

Kael watched him.

Recognize it?

No.

Tavian’s answer came too quickly.

Darius looked at him.

Tavian noticed.

Fine. I recognize the construction style.

From where?

Nowhere specific.

That is not an answer.

It is the only one I have.

Tavian stepped closer to the wall.

These channels weren’t carved decoratively.

The grooves are too consistent.

He removed a small lens from one pocket and held it over the stone.

Faint white light appeared.

Hugo moved beside him.

Mana channels?

Partly.

Tavian frowned.

No.

Not mana channels.

Kael’s attention sharpened.

What are they?

I don’t know yet.

Tavian moved his lens along the carving.

Mana leaves residue in certain minerals after prolonged exposure. Fire-aligned structures stain differently from water. Dense neutral mana creates another pattern.

And this?

Almost nothing.

Kael looked toward the sun-and-wing symbol.

Yet it responded to my Light.

Exactly.

Tavian’s earlier arrogance disappeared.

That makes this significantly more interesting.

Darius spoke.

Interesting is not the word I would use.

Researchers and generals rarely use the same words.

Generals survive longer.

Tavian glanced at him.

Debatable.

Darius continued walking.

Tavian lowered his voice.

Has anyone checked whether that’s true?

Kael shook his head.

Please don’t provoke him underground.

They reached the main chamber shortly after midday.

Tavian stopped on the final stair.

Everyone behind him nearly collided.

Kael moved beside him.

The crystal floated above its platform exactly where they had left it.

Purple light rolled beneath its fractured surface.

The chamber felt colder.

Not in temperature.

In presence.

Hundreds of ancient constructs remained motionless around the walls.

No purple light burned within them.

Tavian removed his lenses.

Then put them back on.

Kael almost smiled.

You believed me.

Belief is not the same as seeing.

The enormous crystal pulsed.

A faint vibration passed through the floor.

Tavian whispered something Kael did not hear.

Hugo did.

What?

Tavian looked at him.

Nothing.

You said old foundation.

Tavian’s head snapped toward him.

Your hearing is annoying too.

Hugo shrugged.

Forge work.

Kael stepped closer.

Old foundation?

Tavian looked toward the crystal.

An academic phrase.

For?

A magical structure built before modern standardized spellcraft.

How old?

Tavian’s jaw tightened.

I don’t know.

Kael waited.

Tavian finally said it.

But older than Aurelia’s current enchantment system.

Darius watched him carefully.

How much older?

If I answer now, I’d be guessing.

Then don’t.

Tavian looked almost relieved.

Most nobles prefer confident lies.

Kael walked toward the edge of the central platform.

I prefer not exploding.

An excellent scholarly principle.

Tavian worked differently from what Kael expected.

He did not immediately approach the crystal.

He measured the room.

Wall to platform.

Platform to columns.

Column spacing.

Depth of carved channels.

Hugo followed with a measuring cord and recorded dimensions.

Damien stood near Kael, spear ready.

Iris circled the outer chamber, examining exits and collapsed passages.

Darius watched everyone.

Kael watched Tavian.

After nearly an hour, Kael’s patience failed.

Have you discovered anything?

Yes.

Kael waited.

Tavian kept writing.

Would you like to share?

I discovered that whoever built this understood geometry.

Kael stared at him.

Tavian looked up.

You asked.

Darius turned away.

Kael suspected he was smiling.

Then Tavian became serious.

The crystal isn’t the center of this chamber.

Kael frowned.

It is physically.

No.

Tavian pointed toward the columns.

Measure from those four.

Hugo checked.

Then looked again.

He’s right.

Kael walked closer.

Explain.

Tavian took a piece of chalk and drew a rough diagram on the floor.

The platform appears central because the chamber was later altered around it.

He drew a second circle.

The original symmetry centers here.

His finger stopped three paces behind the crystal.

Kael looked.

Empty stone.

What’s there?

Tavian stood.

Let’s find out.

Darius stepped in front of him.

Safely.

Tavian looked at him.

Your faith in me remains touching.

My faith in people is why I plan for failure.

Kael liked that line enough to remember it.

Hugo found the seam first.

Not Tavian.

The black stone behind the platform looked continuous, but Hugo placed his palm against it and knocked with two knuckles.

Solid.

He moved six inches.

Knocked again.

Hollow.

Tavian crouched immediately.

There.

A concealed panel.

How do we open it?

Kael asked.

Tavian looked toward him.

You have the inconvenient magic.

Kael understood.

He summoned Light.

Only a small amount.

Enough to illuminate his palm.

The chamber reacted.

The sun-and-wing symbol behind them glowed.

But this time, Kael was watching Tavian instead of the wall.

The mage’s face went pale.

Kael noticed immediately.

You’ve seen this before.

No.

You reacted.

I am standing inside a ruin where an Imperial prince just activated something no modern mage can identify.

That’s worth reacting to.

Darius stepped closer.

Merrow.

Tavian exhaled.

I have seen descriptions.

Where?

Tavian did not answer.

Darius’s voice became colder.

Where?

The old College restricted archive.

Kael’s Light dimmed slightly.

What description?

Not this symbol.

Tavian pointed toward the glowing channels.

This behavior.

Magic that doesn’t behave like modern mana structures.

Hugo frowned.

Then what powers it?

Tavian looked at Kael’s hand.

That is the question people at the College stopped asking.

Why?

Because the last group who studied similar ruins disappeared.

Silence.

Even Iris stopped moving.

Kael’s expression hardened.

Where?

Tavian looked toward him.

Northern frontier.

Outside the current Imperial heartlands.

How long ago?

Thirty-one years.

Kael was not alive then.

Darius would have been younger.

Do you know anything about it?

Kael asked him.

Darius shook his head.

No.

Tavian gave a humorless laugh.

Exactly.

An entire sanctioned expedition disappears, and one of the Empire’s greatest generals never hears about it.

Kael’s gaze sharpened.

You’re saying it was hidden.

I’m saying someone worked very hard to make certain people forgot it happened.

That sounded too familiar.

The missing historical names.

The ruined records.

The ancient groups erased from Imperial memory.

Kael did not like patterns built from missing information.

They encouraged imagination to fill the gaps.

And imagination could become certainty far too easily.

He looked at Tavian.

No theories.

Tavian blinked.

What?

Facts first.

For once, Tavian did not argue.

Good.

Kael placed his glowing hand near the hidden seam.

The black stone responded.

A line of white-gold light appeared.

Then another.

A rectangular section of wall slowly withdrew.

No one moved toward it.

Darius raised his hand.

Hold.

They waited.

Five seconds.

Ten.

No attack.

No construct activation.

Iris moved forward first, crouching near the opening.

Airflow.

From inside?

Yes.

How large?

She peered through.

Room.

Tavian started forward.

Darius caught the back of his vest.

Tavian looked down at the hand.

Must you?

Yes.

Iris enters first.

Tavian looked toward Kael.

This is persecution.

Kael nodded.

Probably.

Iris disappeared into the chamber.

A moment later her voice returned.

Clear.

Darius entered.

Then Kael.

Tavian nearly pushed past Damien to follow.

The hidden room was small.

No statues.

No crystal.

No weapons.

Only a single stone table.

And a body.

Or what remained of one.

Ancient armor rested against the far wall around a skeleton.

The armor was white beneath centuries of dust.

Not Imperial white.

Something older.

A circular emblem sat on the breastplate.

Sun.

Wing.

Kael moved closer.

Darius stopped him with an arm.

No touching.

I know.

You say that often.

Because you stop me often.

Tavian knelt several feet away.

His earlier excitement vanished completely.

Hugo remained by the doorway.

Iris searched the room.

Nothing else.

Then she looked behind the skeleton.

Wait.

A narrow object rested beneath one skeletal hand.

A metal cylinder.

Tavian whispered.

Document case.

Kael looked toward him.

How do you know?

Because scholars have been putting valuable things in tubes since the first scholar realized paper hates water.

For once, nobody argued.

Tavian carefully checked the area around it.

No active mana.

No visible curse pattern.

Darius looked at Kael.

Your decision.

Kael thought.

Take it.

Hugo stepped forward.

I’ll handle it.

Tavian looked offended.

Why him?

Because if the metal breaks, he understands metal.

If there’s magic—

You understand magic.

Kael pointed toward both of them.

Together.

Tavian and Hugo exchanged a look that suggested neither enjoyed the arrangement.

They worked anyway.

Hugo stabilized the cylinder.

Tavian used a fine mana thread to release the corroded seal.

It opened with a dry click.

Inside was no parchment.

A thin plate of pale material slid into Tavian’s palm.

Not metal.

Not stone.

Kael couldn’t identify it.

Symbols covered the surface.

The same unknown language.

Tavian’s expression fell.

I can’t read it.

Kael almost laughed.

Welcome to my life.

Tavian turned the plate.

Something was etched on the reverse.

Not writing.

A diagram.

The giant crystal.

Kael stepped closer.

The illustration was unmistakable.

The crystal sat at the center of a network of lines.

But in the diagram, the crystal was not purple.

A different symbol had been carved into its center.

A circle.

A sun.

And something spreading outward from it.

Hugo frowned.

Looks like a heart.

Tavian’s eyes moved quickly over the diagram.

Not just a storage device.

Kael looked toward him.

What?

Tavian pointed to the lines leaving the crystal.

These aren’t containment routes.

They’re distribution channels.

Distribution for what?

Tavian looked toward the main chamber.

Energy.

Kael slowly understood.

The artifact had not been built to hold power.

It had been built to send it somewhere.

Across the underground structure.

Possibly beyond it.

Then what is the purple crystal?

Tavian shook his head.

Same device.

Wrong energy.

Or corrupted energy.

Kael remembered the mutated wolves.

The leaking channels.

The dying forest.

If this structure once distributed something harmless—or beneficial—then whatever corrupted the heart had turned the same network into a poison system.

Darius looked toward the hidden chamber.

Can it be shut down?

Tavian’s eyes returned to the plate.

Possibly.

Can it be repaired?

Possibly.

Can you give a useful answer that is not possibly?

Tavian looked at him.

Yes.

Darius waited.

We should not destroy it.

Kael’s expression changed.

Why?

Because if the distribution network reaches farther than we think, destroying the central device could rupture every connected channel at once.

The room went silent.

Kael thought of Blackwood.

Eleven villages.

Fields.

Wells.

Roads.

Homes.

The crystal might already be threaded beneath more of his territory than they realized.

Tavian continued.

We map the network first.

Then isolate the corrupted branches.

Then determine whether the heart can be cleansed or replaced.

Kael looked toward the glowing Light in his hand.

My power stabilizes it.

Temporarily.

Can that help?

Tavian considered.

Yes.

How?

I don’t know yet.

Kael stared at him.

Tavian raised a hand.

You wanted facts.

Kael hated when his own words returned to him.

They spent another two hours gathering measurements.

No one touched the central crystal.

No one descended into the deeper passage.

Kael gave that order before Tavian could ask.

The mage complained anyway.

We’re already here.

And we’re leaving.

There may be more records below.

There may also be something that kills us below.

That’s true of most interesting places.

Darius looked at him.

You are returning to Blackwood.

Tavian sighed.

Yes, Sir Darius.

I dislike how satisfied you sound when you say that.

I am practicing obedience.

Poorly.

Kael walked ahead of them.

For the first time since finding the crystal, he felt they had gained something better than another mystery.

A direction.

Map the network.

Find the extent of the contamination.

Understand the original mechanism.

Then act.

Not guess.

They emerged from the cave near sunset.

Elias Thorn was waiting outside.

He looked past them.

Everyone alive.

Damien smiled faintly.

You sound disappointed.

Surprised.

Iris stretched her shoulders.

You should’ve come.

Elias looked toward Tavian.

Did he explode anything?

Not yet.

Tavian stopped.

I have destroyed fewer laboratories than these stories imply.

Kael mounted his horse.

How many?

Tavian considered.

Define destroyed.

Kael looked toward Darius.

Darius shook his head.

Don’t ask.

They started east toward Blackwood.

Hugo rode beside Tavian.

For several minutes they discussed the diagram in low voices.

Kael listened without understanding half of it.

That was good.

For once, he had someone else whose job was to understand the problem.

Damien rode on Kael’s other side.

My lord.

Yes?

The Knight Examination.

Kael looked toward him.

What about it?

If I pass...

Damien hesitated.

Kael waited.

Would you truly accept my oath personally?

Kael understood the question.

Not Darius.

Not the Black Dragon command.

Kael himself.

Yes.

Damien looked toward the road.

Why?

Kael frowned.

Why what?

Why would a prince personally take an oath from a soldier who wasn’t born noble?

Kael stared at him.

Did you think I was only going to knight noble sons?

Damien’s expression remained serious.

In Aurelia, many household knights come from old knightly families.

Kael looked toward Darius riding ahead.

And Darius?

Different.

Everyone says that about him.

Because everyone knows his name.

Kael looked back at Damien.

Then make yours worth knowing.

Damien said nothing.

Kael continued.

If you pass, I’ll hear your oath.

Not because you’re noble.

Not because you’re useful to Darius.

Because you earned the right to make it.

Damien lowered his head.

Thank you, my lord.

Kael looked ahead.

Don’t thank me yet.

Sir Darius still has thirty days to make you regret asking.

Damien laughed.

Ahead of them, Darius spoke without turning.

Twenty-eight.

Damien’s laughter disappeared.

Kael frowned.

What does that mean?

Damien sighed.

Number of times he has reminded me my shield stance broke.

Twenty-nine.

Darius corrected.

Kael laughed so hard his horse tossed its head.

For once, even Iris joined him.

They returned to Blackwood after dark.

The central settlement glowed with lanterns.

Workers were still finishing part of the Adventure Guild roof.

The clang of Garrick’s forge echoed from farther south.

Somewhere near the temporary refugee homes, children were singing badly and loudly.

Blackwood sounded alive.

Kael stopped his horse for a moment.

Beneath all of it, buried somewhere under stone and soil, ancient channels might be carrying corrupted energy toward people who had no idea they existed.

He looked toward Tavian.

Tomorrow.

The mage turned.

We start mapping.

Tavian nodded.

Finally.

Kael looked toward Iris.

You’ll handle surface routes.

She nodded.

My lord.

Hugo.

Yes, my lord.

Work with Tavian on any physical samples.

Try not to kill each other.

No promises.

Tavian looked offended.

I have been perfectly pleasant.

Hugo stared at him.

Tavian corrected himself.

Mostly pleasant.

Kael looked toward Damien.

Back to Darius tomorrow.

Damien’s expression became less enthusiastic.

Yes, my lord.

And Kael himself?

He looked toward the manor.

There were petitions waiting.

Guild reports.

Settlement problems.

A Knight Examination approaching.

And now a hidden network beneath Blackwood.

He couldn’t personally chase every problem.

That lesson had taken him far too long to learn.

So tomorrow, Tavian would study.

Iris would track.

Hugo would inspect.

Darius would train.

Galahad would run the guild.

And Kael would govern.

Not because governing was more glorious.

Because someone had to make sure all those separate pieces continued moving in the same direction.

For the first time, that responsibility did not feel like being trapped behind a desk.

It felt like command.
