Kael did not order an expedition west that night.

Three months ago, he probably would have.

That realization annoyed him.

He stood in the map room with Hector’s copied fragment spread beside Tavian Merrow’s sketches of the underground network.

The western chamber sat at the center of everything they knew.

A giant purple crystal beneath the cave.

Ancient channels leading away from it.

Corrupted beasts nearby.

Contaminated water farther east.

Redpine Ridge reacting through another branch.

The southern field operating cleanly but taking more energy than it should.

And now one sentence from an old military record:

Where one branch blackens, seek first the heart that feeds it.

Tavian read it for the fourth time.

Then the fifth.

Kael finally spoke.

You’re hoping the words change?

I’m hoping whoever wrote this had the decency to define heart somewhere else.

Hugo Stone leaned over one of the diagrams.

Could mean the crystal.

Could.

Kael stared at Tavian.

You didn’t say perhaps.

I’m exhausted.

Improvement.

Sir Darius Valen stood at the far side of the table.

He had said almost nothing since Hector left.

That worried Kael more than Tavian’s uncertainty.

Darius pointed toward the western chamber.

We have treated this as the largest discovered node.

Yes.

What if it is not a node?

Tavian looked up.

What else?

A regulator.

Hugo frowned.

Like the southern terminal?

Larger.

Kael looked toward the copied fragment.

A heart.

Darius nodded.

Something designed to feed multiple branches.

Tavian pushed his lenses higher.

Then the purple crystal may not belong there.

Silence.

Kael looked toward him.

Explain.

Tavian spread the western chamber sketches across the table.

The ancient conduits around the crystal respond to Light.

The surrounding stone carries the same construction patterns as the clean southern line.

Yet the crystal itself is different.

Different material.

Different energy.

Different response.

Hugo understood.

The chamber could be original.

The crystal could have been added later.

Tavian pointed at him.

Exactly.

Kael’s attention sharpened.

Then we’ve been calling the crystal part of the network because it was sitting inside the network.

Yes.

That does not prove it was built with it.

Darius looked toward Kael.

Facts first.

Kael nodded.

Facts first.

He hated how much satisfaction Darius seemed to get from hearing his own lessons repeated back.

Kael moved one of the map markers.

What do we need to prove whether the crystal belongs there?

Tavian started counting.

Stone samples from the chamber walls.

Crystal fragments, if any can be safely collected.

Measurements of the conduits entering and leaving the chamber.

Evidence of modification around the base.

Hugo added.

Fasteners.

Mounting scars.

Different masonry.

Anything showing the chamber was altered after construction.

Kael looked toward Darius.

Security?

Darius answered immediately.

No large party.

Why?

Unknown underground threat. Tight tunnels. More people means more noise, more bodies to protect, and more chances for the corruption to take advantage of confusion.

Kael nodded.

Who?

Darius looked at him.

You are going to insist on yourself.

Yes.

Then me.

Obviously.

Iris.

Tracking underground?

Tracking people.

Darius tapped the map.

We know outsiders were already searching ancient sites.

Merrick Sol’s survey team.

Kael remembered.

Corvin Lask.

Senn.

Seven suspected locations.

Two in Blackwood.

Darius continued.

If someone else entered the western chamber recently, Iris may find it.

Kael nodded.

Hugo.

Tavian immediately objected.

And me.

Kael looked at him.

Hugo understands structure.

I understand the network.

You understand how to touch things Darius tells everyone not to touch.

Tavian stared.

That is an unfair characterization of scholarship.

Hugo looked toward the ceiling.

Kael ignored him.

You come.

Darius’s expression tightened.

Kael noticed.

What?

Six.

Kael counted.

Kael. Darius. Iris. Hugo. Tavian.

Five.

Darius pointed toward the map.

Damien.

Kael nodded.

Why Damien?

Because if I have to separate from the group, someone else needs command authority.

That was enough.

Kael wrote the names.

Then paused.

Grom?

No.

Kael looked surprised.

Darius continued.

He stays in Blackwood.

If something is feeding the network and our investigation causes a reaction elsewhere, the settlement needs a strong response force.

Kael disliked leaving Grom behind.

Which probably meant it was correct.

Fine.

Corvin Lask was still in Blackwood.

Kael had nearly forgotten that.

The relic surveyor had spent most of the past days recovering in a guest room near the healer’s quarters, answering questions when needed and avoiding anything resembling ancient ruins.

Kael found him eating soup.

Corvin stopped when Kael entered.

My lord.

Stay seated.

Corvin did.

Barely.

Kael pulled out the opposite chair.

I need you to remember something.

Corvin looked immediately unhappy.

The eastern ruin?

No.

Your employer’s map.

Merrick Sol.

That name made Corvin’s expression tighten.

What about it?

You said seven suspected sites.

Yes, my lord.

Two in Blackwood.

Yes.

Which two?

Corvin hesitated.

Kael noticed.

You know.

I know one.

Which?

The eastern ruin.

And the second?

Corvin looked toward the window.

We never reached it.

Location.

I only saw the map once.

Location.

Corvin breathed out.

West.

Kael’s stomach tightened.

How far?

Maybe fifteen miles from the central settlement.

The western cave was close enough.

Kael leaned forward.

What symbol marked it?

Corvin closed his eyes.

Circle.

Thick black ring.

Something inside.

What?

I don’t remember.

Try.

Corvin rubbed his forehead.

Lines.

Maybe four.

No.

Three?

Kael waited.

Then Corvin’s eyes opened.

A diamond.

Inside the circle.

Kael became still.

The pale plate recovered from the western chamber contained several geometric marks Tavian had never translated.

One had been a circle surrounding a narrow diamond.

Kael stood.

Corvin looked alarmed.

My lord?

Your employer knew about the western chamber.

Corvin’s face paled.

I didn’t know what it was.

I know.

Kael headed for the door.

Then stopped.

One more thing.

Corvin waited.

Why were you sent east first if the western mark was larger?

Corvin frowned.

Merrick said the eastern site was safer.

Kael slowly turned back.

Safer.

Yes.

Those were his exact words?

Corvin thought.

He said...

Start with the lesser road.

Do not approach the heart until we know what wakes it.

Silence.

Kael stared at him.

You didn’t think that sentence mattered?

Corvin looked ashamed.

At the time, my lord, we thought heart meant a valuable relic chamber.

Kael said nothing.

Corvin continued.

Relic brokers like dramatic words.

Usually they mean they want to pay less before selling something for ten times the price.

That was believable.

Unfortunately.

Kael left.

Tavian heard the sentence and stopped walking.

Do not approach the heart until we know what wakes it.

Kael nodded.

Those words came from Merrick Sol?

According to Corvin.

Tavian looked toward Darius.

Darius’s expression had gone cold.

Someone knew.

Kael nodded.

Before us.

Hugo folded his arms.

Maybe before Blackwood was yours.

Possibly.

Kael looked at Tavian.

Stop smiling.

I’m not smiling.

You are intellectually pleased.

That is different.

Darius stepped toward the map.

Merrick Sol becomes priority.

Kael nodded.

Iris?

Already looking for him.

Not enough.

Darius looked toward Kael.

We need Aurelia.

Kael’s expression tightened.

Hector?

Yes.

He just left.

Then send a rider.

Kael considered.

Aurelia was full of people he did not want hearing about Merrick Sol.

But Hector had already proven willing to limit information.

Kael nodded.

Sealed message.

Only his name.

No mention of the heart.

Good.

Darius looked toward Captain Roland.

Roland had been waiting near the doorway.

My lord?

Send your fastest rider.

Change horses at Ironbridge and again at the eastern post.

Directly to General Hector Valen.

Roland nodded.

What does the message say?

Kael looked at Darius.

Darius answered.

Find Merrick Sol.

Quietly.

Roland bowed.

Yes, Sir.

He left.

The expedition departed the following morning.

No announcement.

No Guild quest.

No public notice.

Kael left Blackwood Central before most market stalls opened.

Grom met them at the western road anyway.

The goblin stood with his spear across one shoulder.

Kael looked at him.

No.

I haven’t said anything.

You’re about to ask to come.

I was about to complain about being left behind.

Denied.

Grom looked toward Darius.

He is becoming you.

Darius answered.

Poorly.

Kael frowned.

I am right here.

Grom ignored him.

If something comes out of the ground while you’re gone, I kill it?

If necessary.

Better.

Kael pointed toward him.

Protect people first.

Grom’s expression became offended.

I know.

Kael knew he did.

Still.

Grom looked at the group.

Then his gaze settled on Damien.

Bring them back.

Damien straightened.

All of them?

Especially the annoying ones.

Tavian looked at Grom.

I assume you mean Kael.

Grom smiled.

I said ones.

Hugo laughed.

Even Darius’s mouth shifted.

Kael mounted.

I regret developing personalities in this army.

Grom raised his spear.

No, you don’t.

Kael looked at him.

No.

He didn’t.

The western forest grew denser after six miles.

Iris took the lead.

No conversation.

No jokes.

The tracker moved differently in terrain she had not recently surveyed.

Slower.

Eyes working constantly.

She stopped once beside a broken fern.

Damien approached.

What?

Iris pointed.

Boot.

Recent?

Two days.

Direction?

West.

Kael looked at Darius.

Recent human activity.

Iris crouched.

One person.

Maybe two if they walked the same line.

Tavian frowned.

Toward the cave?

Iris looked at him.

Eventually.

How can you tell?

Because that’s where the tracks go.

Tavian stared.

Kael smiled.

Tracker.

Iris looked pleased.

Victor isn’t here to complain.

Damien shook his head.

The humor vanished after another hundred paces.

Iris raised one fist.

Everyone stopped.

Darius moved forward.

What?

Iris pointed toward a tree.

A strip of dark green thread hung from the bark.

Kael recognized the color immediately.

The wax fragment from the false merchant’s camp.

Dark green.

Iris removed the thread with tweezers.

Same material as the cord?

Likely.

Hugo looked toward the west.

Then whoever sent Pellan toward Redpine may also know the cave.

Darius drew his sword.

Not because an enemy had appeared.

Because the probability had changed.

Kael did the same.

Damien lowered his spear.

They continued.

The cave entrance looked unchanged.

That worried Iris.

Kael knew because she said so.

Too clean.

Darius scanned the slope.

Explain.

If someone came here, they covered their surface trail.

Kael looked around.

But you found the track.

They covered it close to the entrance.

Not the whole route.

Professional?

Better than Pellan.

That was not a high standard.

Iris moved toward the cave mouth.

Then stopped.

She pointed at the dirt.

See?

Kael saw nothing.

Damien crouched.

What?

Iris traced a shallow line.

Someone brushed the ground with pine branches.

Hugo frowned.

Why hide tracks here if the entire route already leads west?

Iris looked toward the darkness.

Because they didn’t want anyone knowing they entered.

Darius’s sword shifted slightly.

Formation.

The group changed immediately.

Damien front with spear.

Darius behind him.

Iris center-left.

Kael center-right.

Tavian and Hugo inside.

No heroics.

No rushing.

Kael noticed Damien listening more carefully than he had weeks ago.

Growth.

They entered.

The western cave still carried traces of purple light.

Faint.

Wrong.

Tavian’s instruments began reacting before they reached the first ancient corridor.

The corruption has increased.

Kael looked over.

Since when?

Last measurement.

How much?

Six percent environmental rise.

Hugo frowned.

That quickly?

Yes.

Darius looked toward the deeper passage.

Then we were right not to wait.

The first chamber remained intact.

The sun-and-wing carving still marked one wall.

Kael’s Light tingled beneath his skin.

Not active.

Responsive.

He did not summon it.

Darius noticed.

Good.

Kael looked at him.

You don’t have to approve every time I don’t touch something.

I disagree.

Damien almost smiled.

Darius saw it.

Focus.

Yes, Sir.

They continued.

Iris found blood three chambers later.

Fresh.

Not much.

A smear along the wall.

Damien crouched.

Human?

Hugo looked.

Likely.

Iris touched near it with a cloth.

Two days old at most.

Direction?

Deeper.

Kael’s jaw tightened.

Someone had entered the western cave shortly before them.

Possibly the same person tied to the green thread.

Darius looked toward Iris.

Any return trail?

No.

That answer brought everyone back to Corvin’s story.

Four entered.

Three left.

Then footprints copied people.

Kael looked into the dark.

We assume hostile until identified.

Darius corrected him.

Unknown until identified.

Kael looked at him.

That’s becoming irritating.

Good.

They moved.

The purple chamber was no longer stable enough to ignore.

Tavian stopped at the entrance.

Nobody cross the threshold.

Kael looked past him.

The giant crystal still rose almost twenty feet above the ancient stone platform.

Purple veins crawled across its surface.

Previously, the glow pulsed slowly.

Now it beat.

Once.

Pause.

Twice.

Pause.

Like something attempting rhythm.

Hugo whispered.

That’s new.

Tavian checked his instrument.

Stability nine percent.

Kael stared.

It was twelve.

Yes.

Darius looked toward the chamber.

How long?

Impossible to calculate.

Tavian swallowed.

Could remain like this for months.

Could fail tomorrow.

Kael hated both answers.

Iris pointed toward the left side.

There.

Blood.

A trail led along the chamber wall.

Someone had entered.

Recently.

Darius’s voice became quieter.

Damien.

Hold entrance.

Yes, Sir.

Kael looked at him.

You stay with Tavian and Hugo.

Damien frowned.

My lord—

That’s command.

Damien nodded.

Yes, my lord.

Darius and Kael moved with Iris along the outer edge.

No one approached the crystal.

The blood trail ended behind one of the ancient support columns.

A man lay there.

Alive.

Barely.

Dark green traveling cloak.

Gray beard partially peeled away from his face.

Kael stared.

Fake.

Iris crouched.

The beard is attached.

Disguise.

The man beneath it looked younger.

Perhaps forty.

Thin face.

Close-cropped black hair.

A deep cut crossed his ribs.

Kael looked toward Iris.

Arlen Moss?

She shook her head.

Might be.

We never had a real description.

Darius searched the man’s belt.

No weapons except a short dagger.

One leather case.

One broken glass vial.

And a metal badge.

Not Guild.

Not Imperial.

Dark green enamel.

A black circle surrounding a silver diamond.

Kael’s attention sharpened.

The same mark Corvin remembered from Merrick’s map.

Darius looked at Kael.

Not coincidence.

The injured man stirred.

His eyes opened.

Dark brown.

Normal.

He saw Darius first.

Fear.

Then Kael.

More fear.

Prince...

Kael crouched several feet away.

Name.

The man coughed.

No response.

Darius’s voice hardened.

Name.

The man swallowed.

Edran Kess.

Kael had never heard it.

Who do you work for?

Edran looked toward the purple crystal.

Too late.

Kael’s expression tightened.

Who?

Edran laughed weakly.

You still think this belongs to you.

Darius moved slightly closer.

Answer.

Edran looked at him.

Empire’s Shield.

The words carried recognition.

And hatred.

Darius did not react.

Edran’s eyes moved back to Kael.

Merrick was right.

The prince really does bring you everywhere.

Kael’s voice cooled.

Merrick Sol.

Alive?

Edran smiled.

Maybe.

Iris whispered.

He’s buying time.

Darius understood immediately.

His sword came up.

Everyone back.

Kael stood.

Why?

Then the crystal pulsed.

Hard.

Purple light filled the chamber.

Tavian shouted from the entrance.

Move!

The floor cracked.

Not beneath Kael.

Beneath Edran.

He laughed.

Then screamed.

Purple energy erupted through his body.

Kael’s Light ignited instinctively.

White-gold radiance-like Light filled his hands.

The corruption recoiled.

Edran convulsed.

Darius grabbed the man’s cloak and dragged him away from the crack.

Kael moved forward.

Darius shouted.

No!

The command hit harder than the crystal’s pulse.

Kael stopped.

Another fissure opened.

Purple vapor rose.

Not one cloud.

Dozens of thin threads.

Iris backed toward the entrance.

They’re moving!

Tavian shouted again.

Kael! Light! Low and wide!

Kael understood.

Not attack.

Suppression.

He spread both hands.

Light expanded.

A broad white-gold veil swept across the chamber.

The purple threads recoiled.

Some vanished into cracks.

Others struck the Light and twisted.

Kael felt resistance immediately.

Pressure against his arms.

His mana dropped faster than expected.

Too much area.

Darius dragged Edran toward Damien.

Take him!

Damien caught the unconscious man.

Hugo moved forward.

Sir Darius, left conduit!

A stone channel along the wall had begun glowing purple.

Then another.

Tavian stared.

It’s feeding outward!

Kael’s stomach dropped.

The heart.

The branches.

The crystal wasn’t simply failing.

It was pushing corruption through the network.

Tavian shouted.

If it reaches the southern line—

Bram’s field.

The well.

Redpine.

Blackwood.

Kael’s Light brightened.

Darius looked at him.

Can you hold it?

For a little.

Not enough.

Darius looked toward Tavian.

Answer.

Tavian stared at the chamber.

The conduits were purple now.

But beneath the corruption—

Thin white lines still existed.

Original Light-compatible channels.

Tavian pointed.

The chamber!

Kael looked over.

What?

The crystal may be feeding through the ancient distributor.

Then cut it off!

We don’t know how!

Hugo shouted.

Mounting base!

Everyone looked.

At the bottom of the giant crystal, black-purple material met pale ancient stone.

Hugo pointed.

Those braces aren’t original!

Kael saw it now.

Four dark metal supports pinned the crystal into the old platform.

Different craftsmanship.

Different age.

The chamber was ancient.

The crystal had been installed.

Darius understood instantly.

Can the braces be broken?

Hugo looked.

Probably.

Tavian yelled.

Breaking them may destabilize the crystal!

Kael stared at the spreading purple channels.

Leaving them intact was already destabilizing everything else.

Darius made the decision.

We do not break the crystal.

We separate it from the network.

Hugo nodded.

The braces.

Four.

Positions?

Hugo pointed quickly.

North.

South.

East.

West.

Darius looked at Damien.

You hold Edran and protect Tavian.

Damien nodded.

Iris.

Entrance. Watch for hosts.

She disappeared backward.

Hugo.

Direct us.

Hugo stared.

Us?

Darius pointed.

Kael takes east.

I take west.

Hugo’s face changed.

Those braces are ancient alloy.

Darius looked at him.

Can we cut them?

With enough force.

Kael summoned Ice along his sword.

Magic Swordsman.

Aura followed.

Not Night.

Not yet.

White frost crawled down the blade.

Darius looked at him.

Controlled.

Kael nodded.

I know.

Darius moved toward the western brace.

Kael toward the east.

Purple vapor surged.

Kael’s Light kept it back.

Barely.

Hugo shouted.

Not the crystal! Strike the joint where metal enters the pale stone!

Kael saw it.

A black brace the width of his arm.

Purple energy pulsed through it.

He compressed Ice around the joint.

Freeze.

Metal cracked softly.

Then Aura surged through his sword.

One controlled strike.

The brace split.

The entire crystal screamed.

Not metaphorically.

A sound came from it.

High.

Deep.

Impossible.

Everyone froze for half a heartbeat.

Kael stared.

Tavian whispered.

That is not a machine.

Darius shouted.

Focus!

His sword struck the western brace.

No dramatic explosion.

One precise cut.

Aura concentrated so tightly the black alloy split almost cleanly.

Two.

The crystal leaned.

Hugo shouted.

South brace is taking load!

Kael moved.

Purple vapor rushed toward him.

He raised Light.

The vapor split around the glow.

Then something hit his mind.

A whisper.

Not words at first.

Then—

Open.

Kael stopped.

Open.

His blood went cold.

The crystal pulsed.

Images flashed.

A black sky.

A throne.

Chains.

Something enormous beneath red light.

Then Darius struck Kael across the shoulder with the flat of his sword.

The vision shattered.

Kael stumbled.

What—

Darius’s eyes were hard.

It had you.

Kael looked toward the crystal.

No.

For a second.

Enough.

Kael tightened his grip.

Thank you.

Later.

South brace!

They moved.

Kael reached it first.

Ice.

Aura.

Strike.

The brace cracked but did not break.

Too much weight.

Kael’s arm jolted.

Darius arrived.

Together.

Kael looked at him.

Darius placed his blade against the opposite side.

Now.

Both struck.

The south brace shattered.

The crystal tilted sharply.

Tavian screamed.

Last brace is failing!

Hugo looked toward the north support.

If it breaks uncontrolled, the crystal falls into the main conduit!

Darius moved.

Too far.

Kael saw it.

The north brace was across the chamber.

Purple vapor between them.

The crystal leaning toward the central channel.

No time.

Night Aura awakened.

Dark pressure wrapped around Kael.

Darius turned.

Kael—

Kael moved.

Night Frost Step.

Ice formed beneath his boot.

He accelerated across the chamber.

The purple vapor lunged.

Kael twisted.

Changed direction mid-step.

His body screamed at the movement.

Too much strain.

He reached the north brace.

Sword raised.

Ice and Aura together.

The crystal whispered again.

Open.

Kael ignored it.

Strike.

The brace broke.

For one terrible second, nothing happened.

Then the giant crystal separated from the ancient platform.

Not falling.

The pale stone beneath it ignited.

White-gold lines erupted across the chamber floor.

The ancient network rejected the purple crystal.

A burst of Light-compatible energy struck upward.

The crystal lifted several inches.

Then slammed sideways onto an unused section of black stone.

The purple conduits went dark.

All at once.

Silence.

Kael dropped to one knee.

Night Aura vanished.

His breathing came hard.

Darius reached him immediately.

Injured?

No.

Lie again.

Fine.

My leg.

Darius looked.

Blood ran beneath Kael’s boot.

Night Frost Step had torn something.

Julian was going to complain when they returned.

Good.

That meant Kael intended to return.

Tavian approached the central platform slowly.

Hugo beside him.

Neither touched anything.

For once.

The pale stone network glowed softly.

Clean white-gold.

No purple.

Hugo stared.

We separated it.

Tavian’s voice was almost reverent.

The crystal was never the heart.

Kael looked up.

What?

Tavian pointed toward the ancient platform.

This is.

The chamber.

The distributor.

The crystal was connected to it.

Hugo finished.

Like a parasite.

Everyone looked toward the giant purple mass lying several yards away.

Still glowing.

Still unstable.

But no longer feeding Blackwood’s channels.

Darius looked toward Edran Kess.

The injured man had regained consciousness.

His face had gone completely pale.

He stared at the disconnected crystal.

No.

Kael forced himself upright.

Edran looked at him.

You don’t understand what you’ve done.

Kael limped closer.

Then explain it.

Edran laughed.

Weakly.

Desperately.

Merrick is going to kill me.

Darius crouched in front of him.

If Merrick reaches you first.

Edran looked at Sir Darius.

For the first time, the fear in his face had nothing to do with corruption.

Darius’s voice remained calm.

You know my name.

Good.

Then you know I have questioned men on battlefields with far less patience than I am offering you.

Edran swallowed.

Kael watched.

This was the Empire’s Shield without a sword raised.

No shouting.

No torture.

Just certainty.

Darius continued.

Who installed the crystal?

Edran closed his eyes.

I don’t know.

Wrong answer.

It’s true.

Darius waited.

Edran’s breathing quickened.

We found records.

Where?

Merrick.

He has them.

Who is Merrick Sol?

Edran opened his eyes.

Not a broker.

Kael leaned forward.

Then what?

Edran looked toward the disconnected crystal.

A collector.

Of relics?

Edran shook his head.

Of doors.

Silence.

Tavian stopped breathing for a moment.

Kael’s expression hardened.

What doors?

Ancient seals.

Ruins.

Anything built to keep something closed.

Darius’s gaze sharpened.

Why?

Edran whispered.

Because someone is paying him to find the ones that still work.

Kael felt the chamber become colder despite his Ice having faded.

Who?

Edran shook his head.

I never met them.

Name.

I don’t know.

Symbol?

Edran hesitated.

Kael saw it.

You know something.

Edran stared at the floor.

White robes.

Tavian went still.

Darius’s expression changed.

Kael said nothing.

Edran continued.

Merrick met them twice.

People from Solmara?

I don’t know.

They never gave names.

Darius looked toward Kael.

Not enough.

Kael agreed.

White robes proved nothing.

The Sanctum used white.

So did healers.

Scholars.

Religious orders.

Ancient reenactors.

Impostors.

Facts first.

Edran coughed.

One carried a gold sun.

Kael’s expression hardened.

And a wing?

Edran looked up.

No.

Kael froze.

No wing?

Just a sun.

That was different.

The Sanctum’s modern symbol carried both.

The ancient Dawnwarden mark did too.

A sun alone meant something else.

Perhaps.

Tavian whispered.

There are old Sanctum factions.

Darius looked at him.

Not now.

Tavian nodded.

Edran sagged.

Kael looked toward Damien.

Get him out.

Alive.

Damien nodded.

Yes, my lord.

Kael looked toward the separated purple crystal.

Then the clean ancient platform.

One corrupted object had been feeding poison into a system originally designed to sustain land.

The threat beneath Blackwood had changed again.

Not solved.

But understood enough to act.

And for the first time, they had a living prisoner tied directly to Merrick Sol.

Kael looked at Tavian.

Can the chamber operate without the crystal?

Tavian stared at the white-gold channels.

I don’t know.

Kael sighed.

Tavian looked at him.

But now we can find out without purple corruption pouring through everything.

Better.

Hugo crouched beside one of the clean conduits.

And if the network starts balancing again—

Kael thought of the southern field.

The overfed crops.

The contaminated well.

Redpine.

Maybe some of those problems would change.

Darius looked toward the exit.

We return before making another adjustment.

Kael nodded.

That was not retreat.

It was discipline.

He was learning the difference.

They reached Blackwood after sunset.

Grom was waiting at the western gate.

Of course.

He saw Kael limping.

His expression changed immediately.

What happened?

Kael dismounted carefully.

Successful investigation.

Grom stared at the blood on his boot.

You define success strangely.

Darius walked past.

He used Night Frost Step inside an unstable ancient chamber.

Grom looked at Kael.

Why?

Kael pointed at Darius.

I liked him better when he kept things confidential.

Grom started laughing.

Then Julian Valcrest appeared from behind the gate.

He saw Kael’s leg.

My lord.

Kael stopped.

Julian’s face hardened in a way Kael had never seen during knight training.

Inside.

Now.

Kael blinked.

You’re giving me orders?

Healer’s room.

Kael looked at Grom.

The goblin smiled.

Remembrance starts with keeping the lord alive.

Kael sighed.

Fine.

As Julian led him away, Damien escorted Edran Kess through the gate under guard.

Tavian and Hugo carried sealed notes.

Iris went directly to Captain Roland with the surface tracking report.

Darius remained at the gate long enough to issue orders.

No one moved like extras in Kael’s story.

Everyone had work.

That mattered.

Hours later, Kael sat in his study with his leg wrapped tightly.

Julian had declared the injury painful but not serious.

Then informed Kael that using Night Frost Step again before it healed would turn painful into stupid.

Kael suspected Darius had trained him too.

Tavian entered without knocking.

Kael looked up.

You have terrible timing.

I have results.

That improved the timing.

Darius entered behind him.

Naturally.

Tavian placed three readings on the desk.

The central contaminated well line.

Redpine.

Southern field.

Kael looked at the numbers.

He did not understand half of them.

Translate.

Tavian pointed.

Purple contamination at the central line has begun decreasing.

How much?

Small.

But measurable.

Redpine activity?

Lower.

Southern Earth saturation?

Stable.

Kael sat straighter.

Stable?

For the first time since activation.

Darius looked toward Tavian.

Meaning the western crystal was feeding the corruption and forcing the clean branches to compensate.

Likely.

Kael did not complain about the word.

This time, likely was enough to build the next step.

Tavian continued.

We still need days of readings.

Maybe weeks.

But separating the crystal from the distributor changed the entire network response.

Kael looked toward Hector’s copied fragment.

Do not mistake the road for the poison carried through it.

The Dawnwarden network had not been corrupt.

Something had used it.

That distinction changed everything.

Kael looked toward Darius.

We don’t destroy the network.

No.

We learn how to restore it.

Darius nodded.

And contain the crystal separately.

Yes.

Kael looked toward the window.

One active threat had finally become manageable.

Not finished.

But contained enough that Blackwood could breathe.

That mattered because other things were approaching.

The Knight Examination.

The completed Adventure Guild.

The Sanctum’s promised records.

Merrick Sol.

And now Edran Kess.

Kael looked toward Tavian.

Tomorrow, you question him with Darius.

Tavian blinked.

Why me?

Because if he says something magical, Darius may not know whether it’s nonsense.

Darius looked at him.

Accurate.

Tavian considered.

Fine.

Kael leaned back.

And after that, we deal with the Sanctum’s offer.

Darius’s expression hardened.

Carefully.

Obviously.

Tavian and Darius both stared at him.

Kael frowned.

I am capable of caution.

Neither answered.

Kael pointed toward the door.

Both of you leave.

Tavian smiled.

Darius almost did.

They left.

Kael looked at the map one final time.

The western marker had been purple for weeks.

He removed it.

Then replaced it with two.

One white.

One purple.

ANCIENT DISTRIBUTOR — CLEAN FUNCTION RESTORED

Beside it:

FOREIGN CRYSTAL — CONTAINED / ORIGIN UNKNOWN

Two different things.

At last.

Blackwood had spent weeks fighting a poison while assuming the veins themselves were diseased.

Now Kael knew better.

The roads beneath his land had once been built to keep people alive.

Someone, long ago or recently, had found a way to make those same roads carry corruption.

And somewhere beyond Blackwood, a man called Merrick Sol was collecting doors that had been built to remain closed.

That was the next answer Kael intended to take from him.

But not tonight.

Tonight, for the first time in weeks, the contamination beneath Blackwood was no longer spreading.

That was enough.
