General Hector Valen’s letter contained only seven sentences.

Kael disliked all seven.

The first confirmed that Sir Corren Valehart’s preliminary report had reached Aurelia.

The second acknowledged Blackwood’s coming Knight Examination.

The third mentioned House Kael’s proposed household oath.

The fourth referred to unusual activity requiring clarification.

The remaining sentences stated that Hector would arrive personally, that he would travel with a limited Imperial escort, and that Kael should make no ceremonial preparations.

That last instruction caused the most trouble.

Lily read it twice.

No ceremonial preparations.

Correct.

She looked at Kael.

That does not mean no preparations.

Kael stared at her.

It says exactly that.

It says he does not want banners lining the road and musicians at the gate.

Good. We don’t have musicians.

Lily ignored him.

One of the Empire’s highest generals is visiting Blackwood.

Kael looked toward Edwin Ashcombe.

The old butler stood near the study door with his hands folded behind his back.

Edwin?

The guest wing should be prepared.

Kael pointed at Lily.

See? Guest wing. That’s normal.

Edwin continued.

The west dining chamber should also be reopened.

Kael’s expression changed.

Why?

The smaller room is unsuitable if General Hector arrives with senior officers.

How many people does limited escort mean?

Darius answered from near the window.

For Hector?

Kael looked over.

Yes.

Anywhere from twelve to forty.

Kael stared.

That’s limited?

He commands armies.

Forty is practically solitude.

Lily covered a smile.

Kael looked at Darius.

You are enjoying this.

No.

Liar.

Darius said nothing.

That was answer enough.

Kael dropped Hector’s letter onto his desk.

Fine. Prepare the west dining chamber. Guest rooms. Stable space.

Lily nodded.

No decorations.

She hesitated.

Lily.

No ceremonial decorations.

Good.

Fresh flowers are not ceremonial.

Kael closed his eyes.

Do whatever you were already planning to do.

Thank you, my lord.

She left before he could reconsider.

Edwin followed.

Kael looked at Darius.

You knew that would happen.

Yes.

You could have warned me.

You wouldn’t have listened.

Also true.

Kael sat.

Darius remained standing.

That had been happening more often since Hector’s letter arrived.

Not nervousness.

Kael would never call what Darius felt nervousness.

But the man’s attention had become sharper.

More distant.

Kael tapped the letter.

When was the last time you saw him?

Darius knew who he meant.

Three years ago.

Only three?

You sound disappointed.

I expected twenty.

Why?

Because the two of you act like estranged brothers from a bard’s tragedy.

Darius looked toward the door.

We are not estranged.

Then why did Sir Corren call him your brother like he was announcing an invading army?

Because Hector is difficult.

Kael smiled.

You?

Darius looked at him.

Careful.

Kael’s smile widened.

This explains everything.

Darius started toward the door.

Wait.

He stopped.

Kael’s humor faded.

What does he think about you serving me?

Darius did not answer immediately.

Kael noticed.

There.

That was the question.

Darius returned his attention to the window overlooking Blackwood’s growing settlement.

Hector believes service should remain clear.

Clear?

Emperor.

Empire.

Legion.

Command.

Darius spoke slowly.

He dislikes loyalties that become personal enough to complicate duty.

Kael leaned back.

And you serving my mother complicated duty.

Yes.

You serving me more.

Yes.

Kael studied him.

Does he know about the promise?

That she asked you to protect me?

Darius’s jaw tightened slightly.

He knows.

Kael had never asked that before.

What did he think?

That promises made during emotional moments should not become lifelong military policy.

Kael was quiet.

Darius continued.

Hector respected your mother.

He simply believed I allowed my promise to her to influence decisions that should have remained professional.

Did you?

Yes.

Kael had not expected the answer to come so quickly.

Darius turned toward him.

But professional judgment and personal loyalty are not always enemies.

Hector believes they become enemies too easily.

Kael looked at the Black Dragon Banner through the window.

And now I’m creating household knights built around personal oaths.

Yes.

He’ll hate it.

Not necessarily.

Kael stared.

You’re terrible at comforting people.

I wasn’t attempting to.

Naturally.

The nine days did not wait politely for General Hector.

Blackwood continued growing.

The first grain wagons from Orrin Belmore’s purchases arrived on the second morning.

Not one caravan.

Three.

Orrin had followed Kael’s instruction to avoid buying everything through a single merchant route.

Barley came from the northeast.

Oats came from villages nearer the central Imperial road.

Hard winter grain arrived from a minor estate whose owner had apparently been delighted to sell before neighboring merchants discovered Blackwood was purchasing heavily.

Kael met Orrin near the storage sheds.

The merchant stepped down from his wagon rubbing his hands.

My lord.

Kael looked at the wagons.

How badly did we get robbed?

Orrin placed one hand over his heart.

Such faith.

How badly?

Seven percent above last season’s average.

Kael frowned.

That’s not terrible.

Which is why I split the orders.

Orrin pointed toward the barley wagons.

If I had purchased everything from one market, every trader between here and Aurelia would know Blackwood had a shortage.

Then prices double.

Eventually.

Kael looked toward Osric Hale.

The retired captain was already checking weights with two assistants.

Osric called without looking up.

Third barley cart is light.

Orrin’s expression changed.

By how much?

Still checking.

Orrin immediately walked over.

Kael smiled.

He liked watching other people discover why Osric had been useful on border campaigns.

Within twenty minutes, the missing weight turned out not to be fraud.

A cracked rear axle had forced the merchant to unload four sacks at a repair station two villages away.

Orrin produced the receipt.

Osric accepted it.

Then wrote the missing sacks into his arrival ledger.

Kael watched.

No accusations.

No shouting.

Just records.

This was what Darius had meant.

Armies remembered swords.

Territories survived on ledgers.

The southern field produced its first troubling result on the third day.

Not poison.

That would have been simpler.

Bram brought three harvested sample stalks into Tavian Merrow’s temporary laboratory.

Kael arrived after being summoned.

Sir Darius came because Kael had been summoned to Tavian’s laboratory.

That had apparently become policy.

Hugo Stone was already there.

Bram placed the three stalks on the table.

They grew overnight.

Kael frowned.

Crops grow overnight.

Not like this.

Bram placed a fourth stalk beside them.

Yesterday.

It was shorter by nearly a handspan.

Kael looked at Tavian.

Ancient channel?

Tavian nodded.

Probably.

Probably?

Bram looked at Kael.

He has been saying probably for an hour.

Science is not improved by farmers glaring at me.

Bram crossed his arms.

Neither are crops.

Tavian ignored him.

The Earth saturation increased again after your Light activated the buried terminal.

By how much?

Another nine percent across the central section.

Kael’s expression hardened.

I thought it stabilized.

So did I.

Darius spoke.

Can the channel be turned off?

Tavian looked toward him.

Unknown.

Can it be blocked?

Hugo answered.

Maybe physically.

Tavian immediately objected.

Absolutely not.

Hugo looked over.

You asked me to study the stone.

Study.

Not smash.

I didn’t say smash.

Your face did.

Kael interrupted.

Nobody damages it.

Bram nodded.

Good.

Kael looked at him.

That wasn’t for your crops.

Still good.

Kael touched one stalk.

Normal texture.

No strange color.

Tavian had already tested the plant for purple contamination.

None detected.

What happens if growth keeps accelerating?

Bram answered.

Weak stalks.

Bad grain.

Plants can grow too fast.

Kael had not considered that.

Bram continued.

Roots may fail to spread properly.

Soil can be stripped.

One season looks wonderful.

Next one punishes you.

Kael looked at Tavian.

Then this is not a magical farming miracle.

Tavian smiled faintly.

Thank you.

For what?

For saying it before half the merchants in Blackwood start selling blessed wheat.

Darius nodded.

Keep the field closed.

Bram looked disappointed but did not argue.

Kael noticed.

That was how serious it was.

On the fourth day, Iris Hollow found the gray-bearded merchant.

Sort of.

She entered Kael’s study near sunset and dropped a piece of folded parchment onto his desk.

Kael looked at it.

What is that?

A stable receipt.

From?

Eastroad Rest.

Kael opened it.

One horse.

Two nights.

Paid under the name Arlen Moss.

Real?

No.

How do you know?

Because Arlen Moss apparently has three different descriptions depending on who remembers him.

Kael frowned.

Disguise?

Maybe.

Victor Ravenshade stood behind her.

Tracker.

Iris glanced at him.

You came voluntarily.

Victor sighed.

She has ruined that word.

Kael ignored them.

What do we actually know?

Iris counted on her fingers.

Older man.

Gray beard.

Brown coat.

Paid Pellan Dorr to ask questions about Redpine without technically paying him to enter.

Kael looked up.

Pellan said he was only told relics would sell well.

Correct.

I found two other people who spoke to the same merchant.

Who?

A wagon driver and one of Rowan’s laborers.

What did he ask?

Whether Blackwood had found buried stone.

Kael’s expression changed.

Darius, standing near the map, turned.

Specific?

Very.

Iris nodded.

Asked whether anyone had seen black stone with pale lines.

That matched the southern channel.

Did either man answer?

The wagon driver said no.

The laborer mentioned the western road closures.

Kael’s jaw tightened.

Where did the merchant go?

East.

Toward Aurelia?

The route eventually reaches Aurelia.

Could also branch north.

Victor leaned against the wall.

Iris found his camp.

Iris gave him a look.

We found his camp.

Victor smiled.

Growth.

Kael ignored both.

Anything useful?

Iris placed a small wax fragment on the desk.

No full seal.

Just wax stuck to a torn cord.

Dark green.

Kael looked at Darius.

Know it?

No.

Iris added.

Neither does Sir Corren.

That mattered.

Corren knew Imperial Registry houses, many military seals, and more noble marks than Kael wanted to learn.

If he did not recognize it, the merchant might not belong to a major Imperial house.

Or someone had deliberately used an unmarked seal.

Kael looked at Iris.

Continue, but don’t leave Blackwood chasing him.

She nodded.

Already stopped at the boundary.

Good.

Victor looked disappointed.

Kael noticed.

You are not hunting a spy across the Empire.

I wasn’t going to ask.

Your face did.

Iris laughed.

Victor looked betrayed.

Everyone has started doing that.

On the fifth day, Sir Corren tested Marcus Wintermere’s patience.

With a candle.

Again.

But this time the test was different.

The candle stood three feet in front of Marcus.

His sword remained sheathed.

Sir Corren sat nearby.

Darius leaned against the training fence.

Kael watched from beside Damien and Leon.

Corren spoke.

Manifest Aura.

Marcus did.

A pale pressure gathered around his right hand.

The flame flickered.

Corren nodded.

Stop.

Marcus released it.

Again.

Marcus tried.

The flame bent harder.

Stop.

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

Again.

Third attempt.

Less Aura.

The flame barely moved.

Marcus smiled.

Corren immediately said.

Too slow.

Marcus’s smile vanished.

What?

An opponent doesn’t wait five seconds for you to achieve delicate control.

Darius spoke from the fence.

Again.

Marcus looked at him.

Sir—

Again.

Marcus inhaled.

Aura flashed.

Too much.

The candle went out.

Victor, sitting several yards away, groaned.

Marcus turned.

Say something.

I didn’t.

Your face did.

Victor stared at Kael.

This is spreading.

Kael smiled.

Sir Corren relit the candle.

Marcus looked at him.

Is this part of the Knight Examination?

No.

Marcus blinked.

Then why—

Because you have unusual raw Aura and poor regulation.

Corren sat back.

You can become a knight without true Aura Control.

Marcus relaxed slightly.

Then Corren continued.

But if you want to become exceptional, your current habits will cripple you.

Marcus’s expression became serious.

Sir Corren looked toward Damien.

You.

Damien stepped forward.

Same test.

His Aura appeared more quietly.

The flame trembled.

Not steady.

But not extinguished.

Corren nodded.

Faster.

Damien released.

Again.

This time he localized Aura into two fingers.

The flame leaned.

Recovered.

Marcus watched carefully.

There was no bitterness now.

Good.

Darius noticed too.

Corren stopped Damien after the fourth attempt.

Closer.

To true Aura Control?

Damien asked.

Closer to understanding what control requires.

Not the same thing.

Damien nodded.

Marcus looked toward the candle.

Again.

Sir Corren raised an eyebrow.

You were dismissed.

Again anyway.

Something small changed in Darius’s face.

Approval.

Marcus stepped forward.

The candle remained.

The sixth day belonged to the Adventure Guild.

Not a grand opening.

Not yet.

Master Rowan finally completed the roof.

That deserved celebration by itself.

Rowan stood outside the three-story Guild headquarters staring upward as though daring the building to criticize him.

Kael arrived with Lily.

The new structure dominated Blackwood’s central settlement now.

The ground floor contained the main hall, counters, quest boards, waiting tables, storage access and a room intended for healers.

The second floor held records, administrative offices and party meeting rooms.

The third remained partly unfinished but would eventually hold Guild leadership offices, secure archives and training classrooms.

Behind the building stood a separate practice yard.

A bathhouse connection had been planned but not completed.

Drainage ran beneath the foundation.

Private latrines existed on every floor.

Kael had insisted.

Galahad had called that the least heroic part of the Guild.

Kael had called it the reason the building would not smell like a barracks.

Rowan walked toward him.

Roof is done.

Kael looked up.

Looks like a roof.

Master Rowan stared.

That is the intended effect.

Lily covered her mouth.

Kael pointed toward the upper windows.

Still work inside?

Two weeks.

Maybe less.

Kael’s attention sharpened.

For full completion?

Enough to open properly.

Galahad appeared from inside carrying dust on his shoulders.

Not properly.

Kael looked at him.

You just said—

Rowan said enough to open.

I said properly.

Galahad pointed inside.

We still need permanent badge presses, secure record cabinets, another healer’s bed, board frames, lamps, locks, tables, staff desks—

Rowan interrupted.

And if he adds one more thing before I finish, he can build it himself.

Galahad stared.

You promised six additional storage shelves.

I promised to consider six.

Kael looked at Lily.

How long have they been doing this?

Since breakfast.

Good.

That meant the Guild was close.

Not open.

Close.

Kael walked inside.

The hall felt different with a finished ceiling overhead.

Larger.

Permanent.

Mara Fen stood near the quest board transferring temporary notices onto the new frame.

Her bronze provisional badge hung at her belt.

Several other provisional adventurers helped.

Kael watched for a moment.

This place had begun as five days locked in a room with Lily and too many ideas.

Now it had stairs.

Records.

A roof.

Soon it would have applicants coming from outside Blackwood.

Ranks.

Badges.

Parties.

Real quests.

Kael smiled faintly.

Galahad noticed.

Don’t start adding things.

I didn’t say anything.

Your face did.

Kael looked offended.

This is definitely spreading.

The seventh day brought Keeper Ysara Bellune’s answer.

Not personally.

A bird arrived at dawn.

White feathers.

Gold ring around one leg.

Iris shot at it.

She missed intentionally.

Probably.

The bird landed on the manor wall and waited until Kael approached before extending its leg.

Darius did not allow Kael to touch the message.

Kael stared at him.

It’s paper.

Foreign paper.

That is not a category of weapon.

You would be surprised.

Tavian examined it first.

No curse.

No active enchantment.

No poison I recognize.

Kael looked at him.

That last part was unnecessary.

Scientifically accurate.

Darius opened the message.

Kael read over his shoulder.

It contained no greeting from the High Keeper.

Only Keeper Ysara’s name.

Your terms were heard.

Information may be exchanged.

Not freely.

The first record concerning the Dawnwardens can be shown under controlled conditions.

No copying.

No removal.

No Imperial representative present.

Kael laughed once.

Darius did not.

They want you alone.

They won’t get me alone.

Correct.

Kael continued reading.

The final line was stranger.

If House Kael wishes to understand the clean channel beneath its southern fields, do not activate it again before receiving instruction.

Kael’s humor vanished.

Darius looked toward him.

They know.

Yes.

Sir Corren entered the study behind them.

Know what?

Kael handed him the message.

Corren read.

His expression changed.

Did anyone tell the Sanctum about the southern channel?

No.

Tavian shook his head.

Not me.

Iris?

No.

Hugo?

No.

Bram?

Kael paused.

Bram had spoken to farmers.

But not about a clean ancient channel.

At least he had been ordered not to.

Darius’s expression hardened.

Then they still have observers inside Blackwood.

Or something else.

Tavian said it.

Kael looked toward the map.

The Sanctum’s knowledge was too precise.

Not simply that structures existed.

They knew Kael had activated one.

That meant observation.

Interception.

Or ancient monitoring Kael did not yet understand.

Darius spoke.

We respond?

Kael shook his head.

Not yet.

Corren raised an eyebrow.

Why?

Because they told me not to activate the channel again.

Kael looked toward Tavian.

Which means now I want to know why before I let them control the pace of the conversation.

Tavian smiled.

There you are.

Darius did not.

We still do not activate it.

Kael looked at him.

I didn’t say we would.

Good.

I was thinking about it.

I know.

Kael sighed.

On the eighth day, Darius disappeared for three hours.

Kael found him beyond the northern training field.

Alone.

Sword drawn.

Not practicing forms.

Standing.

Kael approached quietly.

Darius knew he was there anyway.

You walk loudly.

I’m on grass.

Still loudly.

Kael stopped beside him.

Tomorrow.

Yes.

You don’t want to talk about Hector.

No.

Good.

Kael stood there.

Darius looked at him.

Why are you still here?

Because you’re clearly waiting for me to leave.

That is generally how privacy works.

Kael folded his arms.

You served beside him?

Years ago.

Before my mother?

Before.

Who was better?

Darius looked toward him.

At what?

Everything.

Hector is the better institutional commander.

Kael blinked.

You admitted that quickly.

Because it’s true.

Explain.

Darius sheathed his sword.

Hector can move fifty thousand men through three provinces and know where their grain arrives six days later.

He understands Imperial command structures better than I ever cared to.

He knows governors.

Legion officers.

Supply masters.

Court procedures.

Which generals hate each other enough to ruin a campaign if placed side by side.

Kael smiled.

Useful.

Extremely.

And you?

Darius looked toward the distant trees.

I am better when the plan stops surviving contact with the enemy.

Kael understood immediately.

Hector built machines.

Darius survived when machines broke.

Which would you want?

Kael asked.

Darius looked at him.

Both.

That answer pleased Kael.

Of course.

Darius continued.

That is what people misunderstand about commanders.

They ask who is stronger.

Who is smarter.

Who wins a duel.

Wars rarely care about simple comparisons.

Kael thought of Marcus and Damien.

Raw Aura versus control.

Leon versus Damien.

Darius versus Corren.

Different strengths.

Different situations.

Kael looked toward him.

Does Hector think he’s better than you?

Yes.

You think you’re better than him?

At some things.

Does he know that?

Yes.

Kael smiled.

This visit might be entertaining.

Darius’s expression became unpleasant.

For you.

Exactly.

General Hector Valen arrived on the ninth day at noon.

No trumpets.

No musicians.

No procession of noble carriages.

He came with twenty-four Imperial soldiers.

Limited.

Apparently.

Their armor was dark steel edged in Imperial gold, practical rather than ceremonial.

Two officers rode near the front.

Four mounted scouts traveled ahead.

A supply wagon followed.

No airship.

No grand banner beyond one Imperial Dragon standard carried behind Hector.

Kael stood at Blackwood’s eastern gate with Sir Darius, Sir Corren, Captain Roland, Damien Ravenmoor and Osric Hale.

Not a ceremonial welcome.

Lily had somehow arranged for the road to be freshly swept anyway.

Kael chose not to ask.

The Imperial column slowed.

The man at its center was immediately recognizable as Darius’s brother.

Not because they looked identical.

They didn’t.

General Hector Valen was taller by perhaps an inch, broader through the chest, and heavier than Darius.

His dark hair had gone silver at the temples.

A trimmed beard covered his jaw.

His armor carried no excessive decoration, only the Imperial Dragon over the breast and three narrow gold bars marking senior general authority.

His sword hung high at his left side.

Unlike Darius, Hector looked like a man accustomed to entering rooms where everyone already knew his rank.

He dismounted.

His eyes went first to Kael.

Then Darius.

They remained there.

For a moment, neither brother moved.

Kael expected something formal.

A salute.

A bow.

Perhaps Sir Darius Valen.

Instead Hector walked forward and stopped in front of Darius.

You look older.

Darius stared at him.

You look heavier.

Silence.

Sir Corren lowered his head.

Kael bit the inside of his cheek.

Hector looked down at himself.

Armor.

Darius’s expression remained flat.

Of course.

Hector’s mouth twitched.

Then he clasped Darius’s forearm.

Darius returned it.

No dramatic reunion.

No bitterness spilling into the road.

Just two men who knew one another too well.

Hector released him.

Three years.

Two years, eleven months.

Hector looked toward Kael.

He still does that?

Frequently.

Kael answered.

General Hector finally faced him fully.

Lord Kael Asterion.

Kael inclined his head.

General Hector Valen.

Hector bowed.

Not deeply.

Correctly.

My lord.

Welcome to Blackwood.

Hector’s eyes moved past Kael.

To the walls.

Watch posts.

Road.

Drainage trenches.

Guild roof visible in the distance.

Training yard.

Black Dragon Banner.

He observed everything in seconds.

Kael noticed.

So did Darius.

Hector looked toward Sir Corren.

Sir Corren.

General.

Your report was irritatingly incomplete.

Sir Corren smiled.

Intentional.

I assumed.

Hector looked back toward Kael.

May we speak privately?

Kael raised an eyebrow.

You’ve been here thirty seconds.

Thirty-seven.

Darius said it.

Hector ignored him.

Kael gestured toward the manor road.

After you settle your men.

That answer made Hector pause.

Kael continued.

Your soldiers have ridden how far today?

Twenty-one miles.

Then they eat first.

Hector studied him.

My officers can handle them.

I know.

Kael glanced toward Osric.

But if you’re going to inspect Blackwood, you might as well see how Blackwood receives soldiers.

Osric stepped forward.

General.

Hector looked at him.

Osric Hale.

Hector recognized the name.

Retired Border Army captain.

Twenty-six years.

Twenty-seven.

Hector nodded once.

Where are you placing us?

East barracks overflow for enlisted.

Two manor rooms for senior officers.

Officers can remain with the men if they prefer.

Stable capacity is ready for thirty-one horses.

You brought twenty-nine.

Hector’s eyebrow rose.

Osric continued.

Feed has already been weighed.

Your wagon remains under your quartermaster’s authority unless he requests Blackwood storage.

Hector looked toward Darius.

You kept him?

Darius answered.

Kael did.

Hector looked back at Kael.

First thing I agree with today.

Kael smiled.

You haven’t heard many things yet.

I have read Sir Corren’s report.

Then you’ve heard too many.

Hector almost smiled.

Almost.

His soldiers began moving under Osric’s direction.

No confusion.

No scrambling.

Kael noticed Hector watching that too.

Every small thing was an examination with this family.

The private meeting did not happen in Kael’s study.

Hector requested the map room.

That irritated Kael because it was the correct choice.

Present were Kael, Darius, Hector and Sir Corren.

Nobody else.

Hector removed his gloves and placed them on the table.

Then he looked toward the Blackwood map.

Colored markers covered it.

Road projects.

Villages.

Patrol routes.

Closed fields.

Guild construction.

Water sources.

The ancient network markers had been removed before his arrival.

Not hidden entirely.

Just not left sitting beneath his nose.

Hector noticed the gaps anyway.

You changed this map recently.

Kael looked at him.

How do you know?

Hector pointed toward three pinholes.

Markers were removed.

Kael glanced at Darius.

Darius gave him nothing.

Hector continued.

Relax.

If I intended to search your territory without permission, I would not announce my arrival nine days early.

Kael leaned against the table.

That’s reassuring in a very specific way.

Sir Corren sat near the window.

I warned you.

Hector ignored him.

He looked toward Kael.

I came for four reasons.

Kael waited.

First, the Knight Examination.

Second, House Kael’s proposed oath.

Third, the Sanctum of the First Light.

Kael’s expression hardened.

And fourth?

Hector looked toward Darius.

My brother.

Silence.

Darius’s face remained unreadable.

Kael looked between them.

Which one do you want to start with?

Hector answered immediately.

The oath.

Of course.

He reached into a leather document case and removed a copy.

Kael stared.

How did you get that?

Hector looked toward Sir Corren.

Corren shook his head.

Not me.

Hector looked back at Kael.

Aurelia has ink.

That answered nothing.

Hector laid the copied oath flat.

I will not deny the protection of House Kael because of blood, race, birth, or poverty.

His finger stopped there.

Grom Ironfang.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

Yes.

Hector continued.

Goblin.

Yes.

Black Dragon.

Yes.

Hector looked at Darius.

You support this?

Darius answered.

Yes.

Hector’s gaze moved back to Kael.

Then the next line.

He read.

I will obey the lawful commands of House Kael unless obedience would require deliberate dishonor, cruelty against the innocent, or betrayal of those I am sworn to protect.

Hector tapped the parchment.

Dangerous.

Kael answered.

Necessary.

To whom?

The knight.

At whose expense?

Kael stared.

Hector continued.

Every commander believes his orders honorable when he gives them.

Every subordinate believes his conscience special when he dislikes them.

Darius spoke.

That is why judgment matters.

Hector looked toward his brother.

You are creating soldiers who can refuse command.

Knights.

Kael corrected him.

Hector’s eyes returned to him.

Exactly.

This is not an army oath.

It is household knighthood.

Kael straightened.

A Black Dragon Knight is not supposed to be an ordinary soldier with Sir placed before his name.

That brought silence.

Hector studied him more carefully.

Kael continued.

If all I wanted was stronger soldiers, I would train stronger soldiers.

A knight carries legal status.

Reputation.

Oath.

Responsibility.

If he obeys me when I order him to slaughter prisoners, then the oath is decoration.

Hector’s expression did not change.

And if he calls a difficult but lawful battle cruel and refuses?

Then he should answer for that refusal.

Hector’s eyes sharpened.

Good.

Kael paused.

That sounded like approval.

It was not.

Hector looked back at the parchment.

It means you understand the problem.

Darius spoke.

You came expecting him not to.

Hector looked at him.

I came expecting you to have written half of this.

I did not.

Hector’s eyes moved toward Kael.

That surprised him.

Kael smiled faintly.

Good.

Hector ignored the smile.

Then he reached the final line.

And House Kael... shall owe protection, fair judgment, worthy command, and remembrance to the knight who gives it.

His fingers stopped at remembrance.

Who added that?

Kael answered.

I did.

Why?

Because soldiers shouldn’t disappear into numbers.

Hector looked at Darius.

Something passed between them.

Kael saw it.

Old history.

Perhaps campaigns.

Casualty ledgers.

Thousands of names.

Hector looked back at the oath.

Keep that line.

Kael blinked.

That’s two things we agree on.

Do not become excited.

Darius’s mouth almost moved.

Kael caught it.

Hector caught Kael catching it.

He looked toward his brother.

You laugh now?

Rarely.

Apparently at me.

Frequently.

Kael decided this visit might be worth the trouble after all.

Then Hector’s expression changed.

The humor ended.

He folded the oath.

Now the Sanctum.

Kael’s smile disappeared.

Hector placed both hands on the map table.

Sir Corren’s report says Keeper Ysara Bellune entered Blackwood territory and directly contacted you.

Yes.

She attempted to recruit you as an intelligence source against members of the Imperial family.

Yes.

Including Emperor Augustus.

Indirectly.

Hector looked at Darius.

And you allowed her to leave.

Darius answered before Kael could.

Yes.

Why?

Kael spoke.

Because arresting a foreign religious agent after she voluntarily made contact would have given me one prisoner and lost me access to everything she knows.

Hector looked at him.

And if she was testing your weakness?

Then she learned I negotiate.

Not surrender.

Hector studied him for several seconds.

Sir Corren leaned back.

I told you.

Hector ignored him again.

What did she offer?

Kael thought carefully.

Information about the old order connected to the Sanctum.

Dawnwardens?

Hector asked.

Kael became still.

So did Darius.

Sir Corren frowned.

You know that name.

Hector’s expression revealed the first genuine surprise since entering Blackwood.

You don’t?

Kael stepped closer to the table.

Where did you hear it?

Hector did not answer immediately.

Kael disliked that.

General.

Hector looked at Darius.

Restricted military archives.

How restricted?

High command.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

The Imperial public archives barely contain proper records of the First War.

I know.

And the military has records about an ancient Light order?

Fragments.

Hector’s voice became careful.

Mostly operational references copied from older documents.

No complete history.

No explanation of who they were.

But the name exists.

Kael looked at Sir Corren.

Corren looked genuinely unaware.

Hector continued.

Which is why the Sanctum contacting you concerns me.

Kael folded his arms.

Because?

Because two months ago, Dawnwarden was a dead word in a sealed archive.

Hector looked directly at him.

Now an Imperial Prince is finding their structures beneath his territory while the Sanctum crosses the border to speak with him.

The room went quiet.

Kael felt the shape of the current arc tightening.

Not solving itself.

Connecting.

Hector turned toward Darius.

And you did not send this to Aurelia immediately.

Darius’s expression hardened.

Kael’s territory.

Kael’s investigation.

Hector’s jaw tightened.

Imperial territory.

Darius answered.

Both can be true.

There it was.

The thing Kael had been waiting for.

Not rage.

Not a dramatic brotherly explosion.

A disagreement older than Blackwood.

Hector stepped closer.

You always do this.

Darius’s eyes narrowed.

Do what?

Turn duty into personal judgment.

Darius answered quietly.

And you turn judgment into procedure.

Sir Corren looked toward Kael.

Kael looked back.

Neither man interrupted.

Hector continued.

You swore to the Empire.

I have never forgotten.

Have you?

The question was sharper than anything yet spoken.

Kael felt it immediately.

Darius did too.

Sir Darius Valen stepped away from the wall.

When I stood at Ashen Fields, I served the Empire.

When I held the western line, I served the Empire.

When I buried men after three kingdoms tried to break our border, I served the Empire.

His voice never rose.

And when Kael’s mother asked me to protect her son, I gave my word.

Hector stared at him.

A personal word.

Yes.

One you have allowed to shape years of service.

Yes.

Hector exhaled through his nose.

There.

Darius stepped closer.

You think that makes me less loyal.

I think it makes you vulnerable.

That stopped Darius.

Not angry.

Stopped.

Hector continued.

You believe loyalty becomes stronger because it has a face.

Sometimes it does.

And sometimes the face makes you excuse what you would condemn in another man.

Kael said nothing.

This was not his argument.

Not entirely.

Hector looked toward him anyway.

My lord, understand something before you mistake my concern for hostility.

Kael waited.

I do not dislike you.

That was a remarkably Hector way to phrase it.

Hector continued.

I dislike powerful men believing personal loyalty automatically makes them righteous.

Kael thought about the oath.

Lawful command.

Dishonor.

Refusal.

Exactly the problem they had been writing around.

Hector pointed toward the parchment.

Which is why, irritatingly, I think your oath may be better than I expected.

Kael blinked.

Darius stared at him.

Hector looked almost offended by his own admission.

Do not make me repeat it.

Kael smiled.

I wouldn’t dream of it.

Sir Corren wrote something.

Hector looked at him.

If that appears in a Registry report—

It already has.

Hector sighed.

For the first time, Darius smiled.

Small.

But real.

Kael saw it.

Hector did too.

The older brother shook his head.

Three years.

And apparently Blackwood has made you worse.

Darius looked toward Kael.

Undeniably.

Kael stared at both of them.

I regret allowing this family into my territory.

Hector finally laughed.

Once.

Deep and brief.

Then he turned toward the map.

Now show me what you removed.

Kael’s smile disappeared.

No.

Hector looked at him.

No?

Not yet.

Darius’s expression became unreadable again.

Sir Corren stopped writing.

Kael stepped to the table.

You came here with questions.

You got answers.

Some.

Kael nodded.

Tomorrow, I’ll show you one structure.

One.

Under my rules.

Hector studied him.

Why only one?

Because before I show one of Aurelia’s highest generals an ancient network beneath Blackwood, I want to know whether General Hector Valen came here as my father’s officer—

Kael looked toward Darius.

—or as his brother.

Silence filled the map room.

Hector stared at him for several seconds.

Then slowly smiled.

Not warmly.

Approvingly.

Good.

Kael raised an eyebrow.

Good?

Hector picked up his gloves.

Sir Corren’s report said you were difficult.

Darius answered.

It was understated.

Hector put on one glove.

Tomorrow, my lord.

He put on the second.

You may decide for yourself which man came to Blackwood.

Then he left.

Sir Corren followed, clearly enjoying himself far too much.

Kael remained beside the map.

Darius did not move.

After several seconds, Kael looked at him.

Well?

Darius stared toward the closed door.

What?

Which man came?

Darius’s expression remained complicated.

Both.

Kael looked down at the map.

That answer was somehow worse.

And much more interesting
