Grom Ironfang stood alone between the massive beast and the retreating survivors.

The creature lowered its head.

Purple light pulsed through the veins beneath its exposed skin.

Grom tightened both hands around his spear.

Behind him, Galahad Charney and the others were moving the rescued villagers away from the cave.

Eleven survivors.

Six adults.

Five children.

That was what mattered.

Grom smiled.

Come on, then.

The beast charged.

The ground shook beneath its weight.

Grom waited.

Twenty feet.

Fifteen.

Ten.

At the final moment, he moved.

The massive claw tore through the space where his head had been.

Grom slid beneath the creature’s side and drove his spear upward.

The blade struck hardened flesh.

A sharp metallic sound echoed through the clearing.

Grom’s eyes widened.

His spear had barely penetrated.

The beast twisted.

Too fast.

Its shoulder slammed into him.

Grom flew across the clearing.

He crashed through a fallen tree and rolled across the ground.

One of the Black Dragon soldiers turned.

Grom!

Keep moving!

Grom forced himself upright.

Blood ran from the corner of his mouth.

The soldier hesitated.

Grom slammed the end of his spear against the ground.

That’s an order!

The soldier turned and continued escorting the survivors.

Grom wiped the blood from his mouth.

Then he laughed.

Strong.

The beast roared.

Grom lowered his stance.

Good.

Galahad heard the roar behind him.

He hated leaving Grom alone.

But the rescued villagers could barely move.

One of the children had an injured leg.

Two adults needed help walking.

The archer’s shoulder was still bleeding.

Galahad looked toward the shield bearer.

Take the front.

The man nodded.

Galahad turned toward the spearman.

Rear.

What about you?

I’m going back.

The spearman stared at him.

To Grom?

Yes.

Didn’t he tell us to leave?

Galahad looked toward the villagers.

He told the soldiers to protect the civilians.

I’m not one of his soldiers.

The spearman almost smiled.

Fair point.

Galahad turned toward two Black Dragon soldiers.

Get everyone back to the abandoned village.

What about you?

I’ll catch up.

The soldiers exchanged glances.

Then one nodded.

Don’t die.

Galahad drew his sword.

I wasn’t planning to.

He ran back toward the clearing.

The massive beast attacked again.

Grom blocked with the shaft of his spear.

The impact drove him backward.

His boots carved trenches through the dirt.

The creature snapped at him.

Grom twisted.

Teeth closed inches from his face.

He struck the creature’s jaw with the butt of his spear.

Once.

Twice.

The beast recoiled.

Grom jumped.

His spear came down toward its eye.

The creature moved.

The blade cut across its face instead.

Black blood sprayed.

The beast screamed.

Grom landed.

There.

Its skin wasn’t equally hardened everywhere.

Eyes.

Mouth.

Joints.

Those were the weak points.

Grom smiled.

Found you.

Then another creature lunged from his left.

Grom turned too late.

A smaller mutated beast slammed into him.

He hit the ground.

The massive creature raised one claw.

Grom looked upward.

That could be a problem.

A sword struck the smaller beast’s neck.

Galahad.

The former mercenary drove his boot into the creature and pulled his blade free.

Grom rolled away as the giant claw smashed into the ground.

Dirt exploded upward.

Grom rose.

I thought I told everyone to leave.

Galahad stepped beside him.

You told your soldiers.

Grom looked at him.

You’re annoying.

I’ve been told.

The two men faced the creatures.

Galahad glanced toward the giant beast.

Any ideas?

Grom pointed his spear toward its face.

Eyes are soft.

Galahad nodded.

That’s your entire plan?

Do you have a better one?

Not yet.

Then mine wins.

The creature charged.

This time, Galahad moved first.

He ran directly toward it.

Grom stared.

And humans call goblins reckless.

At the last moment, Galahad threw himself sideways.

The beast followed him.

Exactly as intended.

Its head turned.

Its right eye became exposed.

Grom launched his spear.

The weapon crossed the clearing.

The blade entered the beast’s eye.

The creature screamed.

Its body crashed into the ground.

Galahad rolled beneath its shoulder.

Grom ran forward.

He grabbed the spear.

Pulled it free.

Then drove it into the eye again.

The purple glow beneath the creature’s skin suddenly intensified.

Galahad saw it first.

Move!

Grom jumped backward.

Purple energy exploded from the beast.

The shockwave threw both men across the clearing.

Trees shook.

Leaves fell.

The smaller creatures suddenly began howling.

Then they stopped attacking.

One by one, their heads turned toward the cave.

Galahad pushed himself up.

What are they doing?

Grom stared.

Listening.

The ground trembled.

Once.

Twice.

The giant beast staggered upright.

Its destroyed eye leaked black blood.

But it no longer looked at Grom.

It looked toward the cave.

Then it began retreating.

Grom frowned.

Where do you think you’re going?

Galahad grabbed his arm.

Wait.

The beast entered the cave.

The smaller creatures followed.

Grom looked at Galahad.

Why did you stop me?

Because something called them back.

Silence followed.

Grom looked toward the darkness inside the cave.

His smile disappeared.

That’s worse.

Yes.

Much worse.

Kael rode hard through the forest.

Darius remained beside him.

Eight Black Dragon soldiers followed.

Branches struck against armor.

The horses struggled over roots and uneven ground.

Kael could still see through the Azure Scout Bird intermittently.

But the bird remained above the canopy.

He had lost sight of Grom.

Then the System appeared.

A-Rank Mana Signature Moving

Direction

Underground.

Kael frowned.

It’s retreating.

Darius glanced toward him.

The beast?

Yes.

Why?

I don’t know.

Kael pushed the horse faster.

Then another notification appeared.

External Mana Fluctuation Increasing

Estimated Depth

73 meters.

Mana Pattern

Pulsing.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

Pulsing.

Like a heartbeat.

The System changed.

Estimated Depth

71 meters.

Kael froze.

Wait.

Darius immediately pulled his reins.

The soldiers behind them stopped.

What?

Kael stared at the notification.

It was seventy-three meters.

What was?

The mana source.

Darius’s expression changed.

Kael continued.

Now it’s seventy-one.

Silence.

Darius looked toward the ground.

It’s moving upward.

Kael nodded.

Two meters wasn’t much.

But it confirmed something important.

Whatever was beneath the cave wasn’t simply an object buried underground.

Something was moving.

They reached the abandoned village shortly afterward.

The rescued civilians had returned.

The moment Kael entered, people surrounded the newcomers.

A woman screamed when she recognized one of the rescued children.

She ran forward.

The child ran into her arms.

Others followed.

Parents.

Brothers.

Sisters.

Friends.

Some cried.

Some collapsed.

Kael watched quietly.

This was what Galahad had meant.

The mission wasn’t about killing monsters.

It was about this.

Bringing people home.

One of the Black Dragon soldiers approached.

Your Highness.

Kael looked at him.

Where are Grom and Galahad?

Still near the cave.

Kael’s expression hardened.

Why?

The A-rank creature remained behind.

Darius turned toward the soldiers.

How many casualties?

None confirmed.

Injuries?

Several.

Kael looked toward the rescued villagers.

Eleven.

Plus the thirty-nine who had reached Blackwood.

Fifty survivors.

But the old bones Galahad discovered meant others had not been so fortunate.

Kael turned his horse.

We’re going.

Darius nodded.

No argument this time.

They found Grom and Galahad outside the cave.

Both looked terrible.

Grom’s armor was damaged.

Galahad’s cloak was torn.

Kael dismounted.

You two look awful.

Grom grinned.

You should see the other one.

Galahad pointed toward the cave.

Unfortunately, the other one went back inside.

Kael’s expression became serious.

Why?

Something called it.

Kael looked at him.

You heard something?

No.

But all of them reacted at the same time.

Galahad explained what had happened.

The sudden purple energy.

The smaller creatures stopping their attack.

The entire pack returning to the cave.

Kael looked toward the entrance.

Darius joined him.

The System appeared.

Estimated Mana Depth

69 meters.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

Four meters.

Whatever was below them was getting closer.

Darius noticed Kael’s expression.

Again?

Kael nodded.

Grom looked between them.

What?

Something is underneath us.

Galahad looked toward the ground.

The monsters?

No.

Kael stared at the cave.

Something else.

Grom immediately stepped toward the entrance.

Then let’s find it.

Kael grabbed his shoulder.

No.

Grom looked surprised.

You just rode all the way here.

And now I’m telling you we’re not entering blindly.

Galahad smiled faintly.

He’s learning.

Kael looked at him.

Don’t start.

Darius almost laughed.

Kael crouched near the cave entrance.

He placed his palm against the earth.

He focused.

Ice mana spread outward.

Not an attack.

Not a construct.

Kael simply allowed the cold to move through the stone.

He had never used his ice this way before.

He closed his eyes.

Stone.

Roots.

Moisture.

Empty spaces.

His control wasn’t precise enough to map everything.

But he could feel differences.

The cave continued downward.

Farther than expected.

Then—

Kael stopped.

There.

An enormous empty space beneath them.

A chamber.

Darius watched him.

What do you feel?

There’s something below the cave.

A cavern?

Bigger.

Kael opened his eyes.

Much bigger.

The System appeared.

Ice Affinity Increased

Environmental Detection Developed

New Technique Forming

Frost Sense

Mastery: 1%

Description

Allows the user to detect structural changes, movement, and moisture through surfaces affected by their ice mana.

Kael stared.

Useful.

But there wasn’t time to experiment.

Another notification appeared.

Estimated Mana Depth

67 meters.

Kael stood.

It’s still coming upward.

Galahad looked toward the cave.

Then we evacuate.

Grom looked at him.

The village is already abandoned.

Not this village.

Galahad looked east.

Blackwood.

Everyone became silent.

If the source was powerful enough to mutate an entire pack, they couldn’t assume it would remain in this forest.

Kael turned toward Darius.

Send a rider.

Western Blackwood goes on alert.

Darius nodded.

No civilians travel west until we understand what’s happening.

Another nod.

Double patrols along the western roads.

Done.

Kael looked toward Galahad.

You wanted the Adventure Guild to collect information.

Galahad nodded.

Start now.

Kael pointed toward the surrounding forest.

Every monster sighting within twenty kilometers.

Disappearances.

Dead livestock.

Strange mana.

Missing travelers.

Anything unusual from the last year.

Galahad understood immediately.

You’re trying to determine how long this has been happening.

Exactly.

Galahad looked toward the abandoned village.

I’ll question the survivors.

Good.

Kael turned toward Grom.

You return to Blackwood.

Grom stared at him.

No.

Kael raised an eyebrow.

Grom pointed toward the cave.

There’s something under there.

Exactly why you’re going back.

That makes no sense.

It does.

Kael stepped closer.

You’re injured.

Grom looked offended.

Barely.

Your armor is broken.

Armor can be repaired.

You’re bleeding.

Grom looked down at himself.

He hadn’t noticed.

Galahad smiled.

You’re going back.

Grom glared at him.

Nobody asked you.

Kael continued.

And Darius needs you to prepare the Black Dragon.

That changed Grom’s expression.

Prepare them for what?

Kael looked toward the cave.

I don’t know yet.

That’s the problem.

Grom finally nodded.

They returned to Blackwood before nightfall.

The settlement was different from when Kael had left that morning.

The news had already spread.

Monster attack.

Rescued villagers.

Western border closed.

People gathered around the construction area asking questions.

Kael didn’t hide what had happened.

But he also didn’t allow rumors to control the story.

Edwin organized messengers.

The same announcement went to all eleven villages.

A monster threat had been discovered west of Blackwood.

The Black Dragon was investigating.

Travel through the western route was temporarily restricted.

No attack had occurred inside Blackwood.

People should continue their normal work.

Kael wanted calm.

Not ignorance.

That evening, the rescued families were given temporary shelter.

Some slept in storage buildings.

Others stayed with Blackwood families.

It wasn’t ideal.

But nobody remained outside.

Kael walked through the temporary camp.

He saw children eating warm food.

Injured adults receiving basic treatment.

Families reunited.

Then he remembered something.

Blackwood still didn’t have a permanent healer.

Another weakness.

Another problem.

Another position that needed filling.

But he wasn’t going to solve it by simply waiting for the System to place someone in front of him.

He would search.

Kael returned to Blackwood Manor late that night.

Darius was already waiting in the study.

A map covered the table.

Galahad stood beside him.

Grom had finally allowed his wounds to be treated.

Kael entered.

What did you find?

Galahad pointed toward the map.

More than I expected.

Several marks had been placed west of Blackwood.

Missing hunters.

Dead livestock.

Merchant caravans reporting strange animal calls.

Two disappearances.

One abandoned farm.

Kael looked at the dates.

Some reports were months old.

Galahad nodded.

The village wasn’t the beginning.

Kael studied the map.

The incidents formed a rough circle around the forest.

At its center—

The cave.

Darius pointed toward it.

Whatever is happening has probably been spreading outward from here.

Kael’s expression hardened.

Then the System appeared.

Regional Information Collected

Analysis Available

Kael accepted.

The scattered reports reorganized within his vision.

Dates.

Locations.

Mana reports.

Monster attacks.

Disappearances.

A pattern formed.

Estimated Initial Mutation Event

Eight Months Ago.

Kael froze.

Eight months.

This had been happening for nearly a year.

Nobody had connected the reports.

Because there had been no organization collecting them.

Galahad watched Kael.

This is exactly what we talked about.

Kael nodded.

One farmer loses livestock.

One hunter disappears.

One merchant hears something strange.

Separately, they’re incidents.

Together—

A warning.

Galahad finished the thought.

Kael looked toward him.

The Adventure Guild just gained another responsibility.

Galahad waited.

Records.

Everything.

Every quest.

Every monster.

Every unusual event.

Even failed missions.

We keep it.

Galahad nodded.

Agreed.

The System appeared.

Adventure Guild Function Discovered

Regional Threat Registry

Purpose

Collects and compares adventurer reports to identify emerging threats.

Current Coverage

Blackwood Territory and Western Frontier.

Kael smiled faintly.

That could save lives.

Then the smile disappeared.

The System flashed red.

Warning

Underground Mana Source Movement Accelerating

Previous Estimated Depth

67 meters.

Current Estimated Depth

52 meters.

Everyone in the room noticed Kael’s expression.

Darius stood.

How far?

Kael looked toward him.

Fifty-two meters.

Galahad’s face hardened.

It moved fifteen meters since we left.

Kael nodded.

Grom entered the room.

His torso was wrapped beneath a fresh shirt.

He looked between them.

What’s happening?

Kael turned toward him.

Prepare the Black Dragon.

Grom smiled.

All fifty?

Kael paused.

Then nodded.

All fifty.

Darius stepped toward the map.

I’ll organize the defense of the villages.

Kael shook his head.

Not just defense.

He pointed toward the western road.

We’re going back tomorrow.

Galahad frowned.

With the entire Black Dragon?

No.

Kael looked toward Darius.

Most remain here.

A smaller force comes with us.

If something goes wrong, Blackwood stays protected.

Darius nodded approvingly.

Kael continued.

Galahad gathers adventurers capable of scouting.

Grom selects experienced fighters.

Darius organizes Blackwood’s defenses.

And I—

Darius looked at him.

You’re going.

Kael smiled.

You know me well.

Unfortunately.

Kael looked down at the map.

Tomorrow, they would return to the cave.

Not to chase monsters.

Not to collect treasure.

They were going beneath it.

They were going to find the source.

The System appeared one final time.

Determine the cause of the Dire Beast mutations.

Kael stared.

Then what was moving toward the surface?

He intended to find out.
