The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Edric Vale discovered before sunrise that Sir Darius Valen did not care how expensive his armor was.

That lesson arrived in the form of mud.

Cold mud.

Deep mud.

The eight Knight Examination candidates stood outside Blackwood’s eastern wall beneath a sky that had not yet decided whether morning had begun.

Damien Ravenmoor.

Leon Ashford.

Victor Ravenshade.

Marcus Wintermere.

Elias Thorn.

Brennar Holt.

Mira Solenne.

Edric Vale.

All eight wore travel clothing rather than full armor.

Darius had ordered it.

Edric had ignored the order.

He arrived wearing polished blue plate bearing House Varrow’s silver fox.

Sir Darius looked at him once.

Vale.

Sir.

Remove it.

Edric hesitated.

My armor?

Yes.

I train in armor.

Today you don’t.

Edric’s jaw tightened.

Sir, House Varrow’s knight program—

Darius turned toward Victor.

Ravenshade.

Victor immediately straightened.

Sir.

How many times have you tried explaining to me how you prefer to train?

Victor thought carefully.

Too many.

Correct.

Darius looked back at Edric.

Learn from his suffering.

Victor smiled.

Then reconsidered.

Sir Darius pointed toward the supply wagon.

Leave the armor there.

Edric removed it.

Slowly.

Mira Solenne watched.

You look disappointed.

Edric glanced at her.

I prefer preparing in the equipment I intend to fight in.

Mira adjusted the worn leather around one wrist.

Then you should probably learn to fight without it before someone takes it from you.

Edric gave her a cold look.

Mira smiled.

Kael stood thirty paces away beside Sir Maelin Ors and Sir Corren Valehart.

He looked toward Darius.

You invited all of us before sunrise for this?

Darius did not look over.

No.

Then why am I here?

You came voluntarily.

Kael frowned.

Sir Corren smiled.

That happens surprisingly often.

Kael ignored him.

Registrar Elric Dane stood beside the wagon wrapped in a thick brown cloak and already miserable.

I was told there would be an observation exercise.

Sir Maelin looked toward him.

There will be.

Does it require standing outside before sunrise?

Yes.

Why?

Because suffering encourages honesty.

Elric stared.

That is not a Registry principle.

It should be.

Kael looked toward Tomas Pell.

The squire had apparently learned not to complain.

He was eating bread.

Kael respected the strategy.

Darius led the candidates east.

No explanation.

No destination.

No weapons beyond wooden practice blades and basic utility knives.

Brennar Holt was the first to ask.

Sir Darius.

Yes.

How far?

Darius kept walking.

Why?

Brennar considered.

Supply planning.

Better question.

Seven miles.

Brennar nodded.

Edric looked toward the road.

Seven miles for a training exercise?

Mira answered before Darius could.

You can always go back.

Edric ignored her.

Kael walked with the observers several hundred paces behind the candidates.

Sir Maelin watched the formation.

Who is leading?

Kael looked ahead.

Darius.

No.

Among the candidates.

Kael studied them.

Damien walked slightly ahead.

Leon near his right.

Brennar farther left.

Victor and Elias near the rear.

Marcus kept pace beside Mira.

Edric walked alone.

Damien.

Maelin shook her head.

Not yet.

Kael frowned.

He is physically first.

That is not always leadership.

Kael looked again.

Damien had not given an order.

Brennar had quietly shifted the slower Marcus away from a muddy rut.

Leon had checked whether Elias’s pack strap was rubbing badly.

Mira had corrected Victor when he almost stepped into a cart ditch.

No single leader.

Exactly.

Sir Maelin continued.

People reveal hierarchy before anyone gives them rank.

Kael thought of Damien’s System evaluation.

Leadership S.

He had been relying on that knowledge.

Perhaps too much.

Potential did not mean every room automatically belonged to him.

Darius had said something similar about Aura Talent.

Potential.

Not current strength.

Leadership might work the same way.

Three miles later, they reached a small bridge.

Broken.

Not completely.

One side had collapsed during the previous week’s rain.

A village wagon sat nearby with one rear wheel trapped in the ditch.

An elderly man stood beside it.

A young woman.

Two children.

A mule that seemed personally offended by everything.

Edric looked toward Darius.

Training obstacle?

Darius continued walking.

The candidates stopped anyway.

That interested Kael.

The elderly man recognized the Black Dragon insignia first.

My lord’s soldiers?

Leon stepped toward him.

Black Dragon.

What happened?

Road edge gave way.

Wheel dropped.

Been here since dawn.

The young woman looked toward the group.

Can you help?

Edric glanced toward Darius.

Darius did not turn.

He continued another twenty paces.

Victor stared.

Is he really leaving?

Mira shrugged.

Apparently.

Damien looked toward the wagon.

Then toward Darius.

Brennar was already removing his pack.

We can lift it.

Edric frowned.

We’re in an examination exercise.

Brennar looked at him.

And?

The wagon isn’t part of it.

The elderly man became visibly uncomfortable.

Leon stepped beside the wheel.

Doesn’t matter.

Marcus dropped his pack.

Victor joined him.

Elias walked around the wagon to inspect the axle.

Mira looked toward Edric.

Coming?

Edric hesitated.

Then reluctantly set down his pack.

Kael stopped walking.

Sir Corren stopped beside him.

Kael looked toward Darius.

He knew.

Of course he knew.

Kael sighed.

This was part of it.

Elric Dane stared.

Did Sir Darius arrange this?

Kael looked toward the wagon.

Maybe.

Maelin spoke.

No.

Kael turned.

How do you know?

Because the axle is genuinely damaged.

Kael blinked.

You can tell from here?

I can tell from the way Elias is looking at it.

Fair.

Elias crouched.

Don’t lift yet.

Marcus frowned.

Why?

Axle split.

If we lift the wrong side, it breaks completely.

The old man looked alarmed.

Can it be repaired?

Temporary.

Elias looked toward Victor.

Find wood.

Victor stared.

Why me?

Because you have eyes.

Mira smiled.

Victor left.

Damien crouched beside Elias.

What do you need?

Support under the axle.

Then we raise the wheel.

Brennar looked toward the bridge.

There’s timber underneath.

Leon shook his head.

Structural timber.

Don’t touch it.

Good.

Brennar looked around.

Fence post?

The young woman pointed toward a broken section nearby.

That one is ours.

Can we use it?

Please.

Marcus pulled the damaged post free.

Edric eventually joined.

Not because anyone ordered him.

He helped Marcus carry it.

Kael noticed.

Small thing.

Still worth noticing.

Within fifteen minutes, the wagon was lifted.

Elias braced the axle.

Victor returned with a thicker branch.

Mira bound the split with rope.

Brennar checked the wheel.

Damien coordinated the lift.

Leon kept the mule calm after it began kicking.

Marcus used controlled Aura for less than three seconds to raise the heavy corner.

Not a flood.

Not a display.

Precise.

Kael saw Darius glance back.

Marcus did too.

For once, he did not smile.

That was probably even better.

The wagon rolled free.

The old man bowed repeatedly.

Thank you.

Thank you, Sirs—

He stopped.

Only Darius, Corren and Maelin were knights.

The candidates were not.

Brennar smiled.

Not Sir yet.

The old man looked embarrassed.

Then thank you anyway.

Mira laughed.

That is safer.

The young woman handed Victor an apple.

He looked at it.

For me?

You found the wood.

Victor accepted it as though he had been given an Imperial decoration.

Kael laughed.

Darius resumed the march.

That bothered Edric.

Finally he asked.

Sir Darius.

Yes.

Was that part of the test?

Darius kept walking.

Does the answer change what you did?

Edric fell silent.

Kael liked the question.

Sir Maelin did too.

She wrote something.

Edric noticed.

His face tightened.

Mira walked beside him.

You really need to stop looking at the notebooks.

I want to know how I’m being evaluated.

Why?

So I can perform correctly.

Mira looked at him.

That might be your problem.

Edric’s expression chilled.

You don’t know me.

No.

She looked toward Darius.

But apparently he did seven years ago.

Victor made a choking sound from behind them.

Edric turned.

Say something.

Victor raised the apple.

Eating.

Brennar laughed.

Even Leon smiled.

Edric did not.

They reached their real destination near midmorning.

A small settlement on Blackwood’s eastern edge called Meadowfen.

Seventy-six residents.

Mostly sheep herders, leather workers, and vegetable farmers.

Kael had visited once months earlier.

Not recently enough.

That realization bothered him.

The village head, a woman named Marta Keel, waited near the central well.

She bowed when Kael approached.

Lord Kael.

Kael nodded.

Mistress Keel.

Sir Darius had sent word?

Only that soldiers were coming.

Her eyes moved toward the candidates.

Problem?

Two.

Darius answered.

Kael looked at him.

Two?

Marta explained.

Someone has been stealing sheep.

And?

Two boys fought yesterday.

Kael waited.

That sounds less serious.

One is the cooper’s son.

One belongs to the new refugee family.

There it was.

Marta’s expression tightened.

Some people say the refugees are stealing.

Proof?

None.

Kael looked toward Darius.

Now he understood.

No monsters.

No ancient structures.

No Aura trial.

A village dispute.

Darius turned toward the eight candidates.

You have until sunset.

Edric frowned.

To do what?

Solve both problems.

Mira raised an eyebrow.

Sheep and children?

Darius looked at her.

Do you believe knights only exist where dragons appear?

No, Sir.

Good.

Darius pointed toward the village.

You have no command authority here.

You may not threaten confession.

You may not search homes without permission.

You may not use Aura against civilians.

You may request assistance from village leadership.

Kael looked at Darius.

What are we doing?

Observing.

Kael smiled.

Finally.

Darius looked at him.

Quietly.

Of course.

The group immediately split.

That was the first mistake.

Edric announced he would investigate theft.

Brennar followed.

Not because he liked Edric.

Because he had years of provincial guard experience.

Mira joined them.

Damien took Leon, Victor, Marcus and Elias toward the fight between the boys.

Sir Maelin watched.

Interesting.

Kael asked.

What?

No discussion about group structure.

They allowed Edric to choose first.

Kael looked toward Damien.

Should he have stopped him?

Maybe.

Maybe not.

Kael frowned.

I hate examiner answers.

Good.

The boys were fourteen and fifteen.

Tomas Keel, the cooper’s nephew.

And Renn Farrow, one of the western refugees who had recently settled permanently in Blackwood.

Tomas had a swollen lip.

Renn had a bruised eye.

Both insisted the other started it.

Victor stared.

Excellent.

Leon looked toward him.

What?

This is exactly what I imagined when I wanted knighthood.

Damien ignored him.

Why were you fighting?

Tomas pointed.

He called my father a liar.

Renn immediately answered.

Because he said my family steals sheep.

Did you?

No.

Did your father?

No.

Tomas crossed his arms.

Everyone knows they started disappearing after refugees came.

Renn stepped forward.

Damien placed one hand between them.

Stop.

Not loud.

Enough.

Elias asked.

When did the first sheep disappear?

Tomas frowned.

Last week.

Renn looked toward him.

We’ve been here three weeks.

Victor said.

That does not help your case.

Leon gave him a look.

Victor corrected.

It also doesn’t prove anything.

Better.

Marcus looked toward Tomas.

Who told you the refugees were stealing?

Tomas hesitated.

My uncle.

Which uncle?

Tomas looked toward the cooper’s house.

Damien noticed.

Good.

Names mattered.

Statements had sources.

He looked toward Elias.

Talk to Renn’s family.

Leon, cooper.

Victor—

Victor sighed.

What terrible job do I get?

Talk to children.

Victor stared.

Children?

They notice things adults ignore.

Victor looked toward Kael in the distance.

Kael smiled.

Victor looked betrayed.

Damien pointed.

Go.

Victor discovered within thirty minutes that children knew everything.

Not accurately.

But extensively.

A girl named Nessa claimed the sheep were taken by a giant wolf.

A boy named Pell claimed a ghost.

Another said the village head was secretly a witch.

Victor looked toward the child.

She is standing right there.

The boy shrugged.

Witches can do that.

Victor rubbed his face.

Then a six-year-old girl said something useful.

The sheep go toward the old orchard at night.

Victor crouched.

Who takes them?

Nobody.

They walk.

Victor stopped.

Walk?

She nodded.

All together?

One at a time.

Why?

The girl thought.

Someone whistles.

Victor’s expression changed.

What kind of whistle?

She demonstrated.

Three notes.

Short.

Long.

Short.

Victor looked toward the orchard.

Finally.

Something real.

He gave the girl half his apple.

She accepted it.

Then pointed.

Your sword is fake.

Victor looked at the wooden weapon.

I know.

You are not a real knight.

Victor sighed.

Not yet.

She considered.

Maybe later.

Victor smiled.

Maybe.

Meanwhile, Edric Vale questioned shepherds.

Poorly.

Kael watched from across the village square.

Edric stood with arms folded, asking the same question repeatedly.

Where were you when the sheep vanished?

The shepherd answered.

Home.

Anyone see you?

My wife.

Anyone else?

No.

Edric looked suspicious.

The shepherd became offended.

Brennar eventually stepped in.

Edric.

What?

You’re interviewing a witness like a suspect.

Everyone is a suspect.

Mira shook her head.

That is how people stop talking to you.

Edric looked toward her.

And your method?

Mira approached the shepherd.

What was unusual that night?

The man relaxed slightly.

Dogs barked.

At what?

Didn’t know.

Direction?

Old orchard.

Mira looked toward Brennar.

Brennar nodded.

Edric frowned.

He didn’t tell me that.

Mira looked at him.

You never asked.

That irritated him more.

By midday, both groups independently reached the orchard.

Damien’s team arrived first.

Victor looked smug.

I solved it.

Elias raised an eyebrow.

A six-year-old solved it.

I cultivated the witness.

Leon laughed.

Marcus looked toward the tree line.

Tracks.

Elias crouched.

Sheep.

Several.

And boots.

Victor’s smile faded.

Human.

Recent?

Elias touched the mud.

Last night.

Damien looked toward the village.

Then toward the trail.

Follow.

No pursuit beyond Blackwood boundary if it crosses.

Leon nodded.

They moved.

Five minutes later, Edric’s group arrived from the opposite side.

Brennar saw the tracks.

You found them.

Victor smiled.

Children.

Edric looked confused.

Mira laughed.

Don’t ask.

They followed together.

The trail ended at an abandoned smokehouse.

Damien raised one hand.

Everyone stopped.

Voices inside.

Two.

Brennar moved left.

Leon right.

Edric reached for his wooden sword.

Mira looked at him.

Against sheep thieves?

Could be armed.

Fair.

Damien approached the door.

Black Dragon.

Come out.

Silence.

Then movement.

A man burst from the rear.

Marcus reacted.

Aura flared around his legs.

He moved quickly enough to intercept.

But instead of striking, he planted himself in the path.

The fleeing man stopped.

Turned.

Ran toward the orchard.

Victor tackled him.

Both hit the ground.

Victor immediately rolled away.

No unnecessary punches.

No glory.

Darius watched from far enough away that the candidates had probably forgotten him.

Kael did not.

Victor pinned the man’s arm.

Stay down.

The front door opened.

The second thief stepped out holding a knife.

Edric raised his wooden sword.

Drop it.

The man hesitated.

Edric moved forward.

Too quickly.

The thief panicked.

Knife came up.

Mira struck Edric’s wrist with the flat of her hand.

His practice sword fell.

She stepped past him.

Her own hands remained empty.

Easy.

The thief stared.

Mira spoke calmly.

There are eight of us.

Three recognized Imperial knights watching from the hill.

Lord Kael is over there.

And you have one kitchen knife.

The thief looked.

He saw Kael.

His face collapsed.

The knife dropped.

Mira nodded.

Good decision.

Edric stared at her.

I had him.

No.

You had a frightened man deciding whether to stab you.

Edric’s jaw tightened.

Mira ignored him.

Brennar entered the smokehouse.

Then came back out.

Three sheep alive.

One butchered.

Kael’s expression hardened.

So the theft was real.

But not the refugees.

The thieves were brothers.

Local.

Born in Meadowfen.

Neither refugee.

Both had gambling debts.

They had learned one shepherd used a whistle to move animals between fields and copied it at night.

The refugee accusation had been coincidence.

Or convenience.

Kael disliked the second possibility more.

The village gathered near the well.

The accused refugee family stood apart.

Renn’s father, Jorel Farrow, looked exhausted.

The cooper’s brother, Hestin Keel, looked embarrassed.

Darius turned toward the candidates.

Resolve it.

Edric frowned.

The thieves are caught.

That’s only one problem.

Kael understood.

The sheep were solved.

The village was not.

Damien looked toward Hestin.

You accused the Farrow family.

Hestin shifted.

I said it was suspicious.

You told your nephew they were thieves.

I was angry.

Renn’s father spoke.

And now half the village thinks my children steal.

Hestin looked toward the ground.

Damien waited.

Nothing.

Leon stepped closer.

Then fix it.

Hestin looked at him.

How?

Victor answered.

Start with the same people you told.

Silence.

Mira nodded.

Public accusation.

Public correction.

Hestin’s face reddened.

You want me to apologize in front of everyone?

Edric spoke.

A formal statement should be sufficient.

Kael’s eyes shifted.

Darius’s did too.

Mira looked at Edric.

A formal statement to whom?

Village records.

Mira laughed once.

The children weren’t reading village records when they started calling Renn a thief.

Edric looked annoyed.

There should still be proper procedure.

Brennar stepped between them.

Both.

Everyone looked at him.

Brennar continued.

Village head records that the Farrows were falsely accused.

Hestin corrects it publicly.

The thieves compensate the shepherds through labor or property after judgment.

And the boys?

Leon looked toward Tomas and Renn.

They apologize to each other for the fight.

Both boys protested immediately.

No.

Absolutely not.

Victor smiled.

Now this feels like justice.

Kael almost laughed.

Tomas apologized first.

Badly.

I shouldn’t have called your family thieves.

Renn crossed his arms.

That’s it?

Tomas looked toward Damien.

Damien gave him nothing.

Tomas sighed.

And I shouldn’t have hit you first.

Renn frowned.

You didn’t.

Tomas blinked.

Renn looked uncomfortable.

I hit you first.

Tomas stared.

Why did you say I did?

Because everyone believed you.

The entire village became quieter.

Kael felt that sentence.

Renn continued.

I thought if I admitted it, they’d say I attacked you because my family was guilty.

Tomas looked at him differently.

Then Renn sighed.

I’m sorry I hit you.

Tomas nodded.

I’m sorry I hit back.

Victor whispered toward Leon.

Disappointingly mature.

Leon elbowed him.

Hestin Keel stood before the villagers next.

He admitted he had spread an accusation without proof.

Not elegantly.

Not happily.

But publicly.

Jorel Farrow did not forgive him immediately.

Kael respected that.

Apologies did not erase consequences on command.

But something had changed.

The rumor no longer stood unanswered.

Darius waited until the village matter was resolved.

Then he gathered all eight candidates near the bridge.

Kael stood beside Sir Corren, Sir Maelin and Registrar Elric.

Edric looked tired.

Victor looked muddy.

Marcus’s boots were ruined.

Mira appeared comfortable.

Brennar looked thoughtful.

Darius faced them.

What was today’s examination?

Edric answered first.

Investigation.

Wrong.

Victor smiled.

Then caught himself.

Darius looked toward Mira.

Judgment.

Partly.

Brennar.

Service.

Closer.

Damien thought.

Responsibility without authority.

Darius looked at him.

Explain.

We had no right to command the village.

We had to help without pretending we owned the people we were helping.

Darius nodded.

Leon added.

And solving the crime wasn’t enough.

Darius looked at him.

Why?

Because the accusation had already damaged people.

Elias spoke.

Finding the thief answered who stole the sheep.

It did not answer what the village should do afterward.

Darius nodded again.

Then he looked at Edric.

What did you learn?

Edric’s expression hardened.

Everyone watched.

For a moment, Kael expected pride to win.

Then Edric looked toward the village.

That I question people poorly.

Mira’s eyebrow rose.

Darius waited.

Edric continued.

I approached every witness as though pressure would produce truth.

It produced shorter answers.

Brennar looked slightly impressed.

Darius asked.

Anything else?

Edric’s jaw tightened.

I nearly caused an armed man to fight because I wanted immediate compliance.

Mira said nothing.

That helped.

Edric continued.

She resolved it better.

Darius nodded.

Good.

Not praise.

Recognition.

Edric seemed to understand the difference.

Darius looked toward Victor.

What did you learn?

Victor smiled.

Children are terrifying intelligence networks.

Kael laughed.

Darius stared.

Victor sighed.

And that helping civilians doesn’t always involve fighting.

Better.

Darius looked toward Marcus.

Marcus answered.

Aura was useful for lifting the wagon and intercepting the thief.

I didn’t need more.

Darius nodded.

That mattered.

Then Elias.

Elias looked toward the repaired wagon far behind them.

Small problems become big when everyone assumes someone else will handle them.

Darius gave him a long look.

Yes.

Finally Brennar.

The older provincial guard captain looked toward the Black Dragon candidates.

I learned I came here thinking experience meant I had less to learn than them.

Darius’s eyebrow rose.

And?

I was wrong.

Mira smiled.

Edric looked away.

Darius turned toward her.

Solenne.

Mira thought.

I learned House Kael’s candidates aren’t provincial.

Victor smiled broadly.

Mira continued.

They’re strange.

Victor’s smile disappeared.

Marcus laughed.

Mira looked toward Darius.

But they pay attention to people.

That isn’t universal among knight candidates.

Darius nodded once.

The lesson ended.

Or seemed to.

Sir Maelin stepped forward.

One more matter.

Everyone looked at her.

She held her notebook.

Two candidates improved their standing today.

Three revealed weaknesses already suspected.

Two performed roughly as expected.

One raised a new concern.

No names.

Edric’s face tightened.

Victor looked horrified.

You’re not telling us?

No.

That’s cruel.

Yes.

Victor looked toward Kael.

Kael raised both hands.

Not my examination.

Darius looked toward Victor.

You wanted knighthood.

Victor sighed.

I keep remembering.

Back in Blackwood that evening, Registrar Elric requested Kael’s presence.

The registrar had taken over one of the manor’s smaller offices.

Documents covered the desk.

Kael entered with Darius.

Elric looked up.

I have completed the preliminary review of the Black Dragon Knight designation.

Kael sat immediately.

And?

Legally workable.

Kael smiled.

Elric raised one finger.

With one addition.

Kael’s smile disappeared.

Of course.

The household designation must be recorded as subordinate to recognized Imperial knighthood and separate from military command.

We already agreed.

It must appear in writing.

Fine.

Elric pushed the language across.

Black Dragon Knight: A household knight of House Kael who has received recognized Imperial knighthood and voluntarily sworn the registered Black Dragon household oath. The title confers no automatic military command except where separately appointed.

Kael read it.

Clean.

Darius nodded.

Good.

Elric continued.

One more recommendation.

Kael waited.

Do not call the institution an order yet.

Why?

Because you have zero Black Dragon Knights.

Kael stared.

Fair.

An order usually implies established membership, governance, continuity, and internal rules.

Right now you have a title.

Kael looked toward Darius.

He is irritating.

Darius nodded.

Useful.

Elric adjusted his spectacles.

Those qualities often coexist.

Kael signed the preliminary designation.

Not final.

The title would only become active if someone actually passed the Imperial examination and chose House Kael.

Damien.

Leon.

Perhaps another.

Perhaps none.

That possibility remained.

Kael forced himself to accept it.

Elric sanded the ink.

Then placed the paper inside a Registry case.

There.

Black Dragon Knight now exists legally as a proposed household designation pending first recognized oath.

Kael looked at the sealed case.

Something he had invented in a room with Darius and the others had just entered Imperial bureaucracy.

Strangely, that made it feel more real.

Darius looked toward him.

Do not become sentimental over paperwork.

Kael looked at Elric’s document cases.

Impossible.

Later that night, Keeper Ysara Bellune sat alone in a Sanctum archive room with a knife in her hand.

Not a weapon.

A book knife.

She had been ordered to prepare the controlled Dawnwarden record for Kael.

She had done so.

Mostly.

Three pages had already been removed under the High Keeper’s authority.

One mentioning the Last Seal.

One referencing the prison beneath the First War battlefield.

One describing the sun-only branch.

Ysara looked at the gaps.

She had served the Sanctum for seventeen years.

Missing pages did not surprise her.

Restricted knowledge existed for reasons.

Dangerous rituals.

Forbidden names.

Maps that could lead fools to sealed places.

What bothered her was the pattern.

The removed page before her ended with:

The wing shall guard the roads.

The next remaining page began:

—must never be entrusted to the bearer of the sun alone.

Ysara stared.

Something had existed between those sentences.

Something important.

The sun alone.

She thought of the High Keeper’s private questions.

Kael.

Asterion blood.

Dawnwarden hearts.

Seals.

Her hand rested on the page.

Then footsteps approached.

Ysara closed the book.

Another Keeper entered.

Brother Caelis, a thin man in his forties with pale hair and tired eyes.

Keeper Bellune.

Keeper Caelis.

He placed a bundle of copied records beside her.

The High Keeper wants these included.

Ysara opened the top document.

A history of early Sanctum purifications.

Useful.

Safe.

Curated.

She looked at Caelis.

Did you remove the lower archive sheets?

His face changed.

No.

Who did?

He hesitated.

Keeper.

Caelis looked toward the closed door.

I was told not to ask.

That was not an answer.

It was the only one he would give.

Ysara looked back toward the damaged Dawnwarden record.

For the first time, Tavian Merrow’s attitude toward forbidden knowledge made uncomfortable sense.

Not because all restrictions were wrong.

Because someone always decided which truths were too dangerous for everyone else.

Ysara closed the record.

When does Lord Kael receive this?

Caelis answered.

The High Keeper wants the exchange after Blackwood’s Knight Examination.

Why after?

Caelis shook his head.

No explanation.

Ysara looked toward the white-gold flame burning above the archive door.

Another delay.

Another controlled piece.

Another decision made above her rank.

She had told Kael the Sanctum possessed incomplete truths.

She had meant ancient history.

Now she was beginning to wonder whether the incompleteness was deliberate.

And somewhere beneath Solmara, the High Keeper was counting on her not wondering quickly enough.

In Blackwood Manor, Kael stood before the calendar.

Seventeen days remained until the Knight Examination.

The outside witnesses had arrived.

The additional candidates had joined.

The Black Dragon Knight designation had passed preliminary legal review.

The underground corruption was contained.

Merrick Sol was being investigated rather than blindly chased.

The Guild headquarters was approaching completion.

For once, the story in front of him had a clear order.

Finish the examination.

Finish the Guild.

Then move forward.

Kael looked toward the dark training yard beyond his window.

Tomorrow Darius would find another way to make eight grown adults question every decision that had led them to Blackwood.

Kael smiled.

He was beginning to understand why Darius enjoyed teaching.

Not because people suffered.

Probably.

But because eventually, if the lessons worked, they stopped making the same mistakes.

Outside, beneath the Black Dragon Banner, eight candidates were sleeping.

Some would become knights.

Some would not.

And for the first time, Kael no longer thought passing was the most important part.
