The arrival of Orrin Belmore’s caravan spread through Blackwood before noon.

Workers paused to watch the wagons pass.

Children ran alongside them, pointing excitedly at the brightly colored cloth and polished barrels stacked neatly in the carts.

For many of them...

It was the first merchant caravan they had ever seen stop in Blackwood.

Kael walked beside Orrin through the manor grounds.

The merchant observed everything.

The workers are repairing roads.

Stone being unloaded from wagons.

Master Rowan shouting instructions at a group of carpenters.

Garrick Ironhand inspecting newly forged tools.

Finally, Orrin smiled.

”This is not what I expected.”

Kael glanced at him.

”What were you expecting?”

”A forgotten border territory.”

”And instead?”

”A lord investing in his people before investing in himself.”

Kael remained silent.

That wasn’t praise.

It was an observation.

Those were the kind Kael trusted most.

Lily led the caravan toward the temporary trading yard beside the estate.

”It isn’t much,” she admitted.

”We only recently cleared the land.”

Orrin climbed down from his wagon.

”It will do.”

His assistants immediately began unloading goods.

Several villagers cautiously approached.

Not to buy.

Simply to look.

One little girl stopped in front of a wooden toy carved into the shape of a horse.

She stared.

Her mother gently pulled her away.

”We cannot afford it.”

Orrin noticed.

He picked up the toy.

”Young lady.”

The child froze.

He smiled warmly.

”What is your name?”

”...Anna.”

”Would you help me?”

She nodded cautiously.

”I need someone to tell the other children that the market opens tomorrow.”

Anna blinked.

”Really?”

”In return...”

He handed her the toy horse.

”...consider this your payment.”

The little girl’s eyes widened.

Her mother quickly bowed.

”We cannot—”

”You can.”

Orrin smiled.

”And if your daughter tells everyone, I shall have plenty of customers tomorrow.”

Kael watched the exchange quietly.

Then he looked at Lily.

”He’s clever.”

Lily nodded.

”And kind.”

That afternoon, Kael sat with Orrin inside the manor.

Tea rested untouched between them.

Orrin unfolded a map of several trade routes.

”You’ve improved this road.”

Kael nodded.

”We’ve only begun.”

”I can see that.”

Orrin pointed farther west.

”This road eventually joins the Imperial Highway.”

”I know.”

”But few merchants use this route.”

Kael frowned.

”Why?”

Orrin looked directly at him.

”Because they don’t trust it.”

Kael leaned forward.

”Bandits?”

”Sometimes.”

”Monsters?”

”Occasionally.”

”What else?”

Orrin tapped the map.

”Distance.”

Kael looked confused.

The merchant explained.

”A merchant doesn’t simply ask whether a road is safe.”

He moved his finger between two cities.

”He asks whether the extra journey is worth the profit.”

Kael slowly nodded.

”I understand.”

”If Blackwood gives travelers a reason to stop...”

Orrin smiled.

”...the road itself becomes valuable.”

Kael looked toward the window.

”A reason to stop...”

His thoughts drifted.

Markets.

Homes.

Safe roads.

Then...

Bathhouses.

Good food.

Comfortable inns.

A place where merchants wanted to spend the night instead of merely passing through.

The idea settled quietly in his mind.

Outside, construction continued.

Master Rowan walked through the new housing district with Bram.

The carpenter frowned.

”The foundations are good.”

Bram nodded.

”They should last.”

”But...”

Rowan stopped.

”The spacing is wrong.”

Bram looked around.

”What do you mean?”

”If every house sits this close...”

He pointed between two foundations.

”...one fire could spread through half the neighborhood.”

Bram’s expression changed.

”I hadn’t considered that.”

Rowan sighed.

”Most people don’t.”

He turned toward one of the builders.

”Take these stakes out.”

The man blinked.

”But we’ve already measured them.”

”Measure again.”

The worker hurried off.

Bram smiled.

”You’ve become rather strict.”

Rowan snorted.

”I’d rather rebuild a foundation today than rebuild fifty houses after a fire.”

Near the forge, Garrick stood with several young apprentices.

One struggled to shape a simple hoe.

The metal bent awkwardly.

Garrick folded his arms.

”What happened?”

The apprentice lowered his head.

”I struck it too hard.”

”No.”

Garrick picked up the tool.

”You stopped watching the metal.”

He reheated it.

”Steel speaks.”

The apprentices exchanged confused looks.

Garrick continued.

”It changes color.”

He pointed into the forge.

”It softens.”

Another strike.

Another.

The shape straightened.

”If you watch carefully...”

He handed it back.

”...it tells you when it’s ready.”

Kael observed from the doorway.

Garrick wasn’t merely making tools anymore.

He was creating craftsmen.

Late that evening...

Kael stood on the balcony overlooking Blackwood.

Lights flickered throughout the estate.

Workers laughed around cooking fires.

Children chased each other between wagons.

Merchants organized tomorrow’s goods.

For the first time...

Blackwood felt alive after sunset.

Edwin quietly approached.

”You seem pleased.”

Kael nodded.

”I expected roads.”

Edwin waited.

”I expected houses.”

Another pause.

”I didn’t expect this.”

Edwin followed Kael’s gaze.

”The people?”

”Yes.”

The old butler smiled.

”When people begin smiling while they work...”

”...they’ve begun believing.”

Kael looked toward the northern road.

”I still have much to do.”

”You always will.”

Kael laughed softly.

”I suppose that’s true.”

The next morning...

Captain Roland hurried across the courtyard.

”My lord!”

Kael turned.

”What happened?”

”A messenger from Aurelia.”

Everyone nearby stopped.

Even Orrin looked up.

An Imperial messenger wearing blue and gold rode through the gate.

The Imperial Dragon was embroidered across his cloak.

He dismounted before Kael.

Then bowed deeply.

”My Lord Kael Asterion.”

Kael stepped forward.

”You’ve ridden far.”

”I carry orders from His Majesty...”

The courtyard became silent.

The messenger removed a sealed scroll bearing the Imperial Dragon.

”The Imperial Council has been summoned.”

Kael accepted the scroll.

The crimson wax remained unbroken.

His eyes rested on the seal for several moments.

Imperial Council meetings were not called lightly.

If the Emperor himself had summoned the Council...

Something significant had happened.

Kael slowly broke the seal.

As his eyes moved across the first lines...

His expression became unreadable.

Lily noticed immediately.

”My lord...”

Kael lowered the parchment.

”Prepare my horse.”

Ronan stepped forward.

”We’re returning to Aurelia?”

Kael folded the decree carefully.

”Yes.”

He looked once toward the growing roads of Blackwood.

Then toward the workers who continued building, unaware that events in the capital were already beginning to move.

”The work doesn’t stop while I’m gone.”

He handed the decree to Edwin.

”You’ll oversee the estate with Lily, Rowan, Garrick, and Bram.”

Edwin bowed.

”It will be done.”

Kael looked once more at Blackwood.

Only days ago...

His greatest concern had been whether the territory could survive.

Now...

Blackwood had taken its first steps toward prosperity.

But the Empire had just called him back.

And Kael suspected that whatever awaited him in Aurelia...

Would shape far more than the future of Blackwood.
