The following morning came quietly.

Kael was already in the courtyard when Ronan arrived.

The older warrior wore the same dark leather coat from the previous day, though the dust had been brushed away. His sword hung at his side, and a fresh bandage wrapped around his left forearm.

Selene arrived shortly after.

Her dark hair was tied behind her head, and she wore a forest-green hunting cloak over a simple leather tunic. Her bow rested across her back.

Behind them came the others.

Garrick carried his sword over one shoulder.

Tavian had a bundle of parchment tucked beneath his arm.

Harlan walked with the slow, steady steps of a man who had spent most of his life marching.

Merek and Marek followed together, already arguing quietly about something.

Kael watched them approach.

”You all came.”

Garrick gave him a crooked smile.

”You said there was more work.”

”There is.”

”Then why wouldn’t we?”

Kael looked at Ronan.

”You understand that what happened yesterday was not part of the original task.”

Ronan nodded.

”You wanted to know what we would do when the situation changed.”

Kael gave a slight smile.

”Good.”

He turned toward the stable.

”Then today, we’ll see what you do when the situation changes again.”

Merek exchanged a glance with his brother.

”That sounds unpleasant.”

”It probably will be,” Marek said.

Kael heard them.

”You’re learning quickly.”

Garrick laughed.

They left the estate shortly after sunrise.

This time, Kael did not ride at the front.

He stayed several lengths behind the others.

Ronan noticed.

”You aren’t leading?”

”No.”

”Why?”

”Because I’m watching.”

Ronan understood.

Kael wasn’t interested in showing them how to solve every problem.

He wanted to see whether they could solve one without him.

The road stretched toward the west.

For several miles, nothing seemed unusual.

Farmers worked their fields.

Carts traveled between settlements.

Children ran beside their parents.

Then Tavian raised his hand.

Everyone slowed.

He dismounted.

Kael watched from behind.

Tavian crouched beside the road.

”Something happened here.”

Garrick looked down.

”I don’t see anything.”

Tavian pointed toward the grass.

”The wheels left the road.”

Ronan dismounted.

He studied the marks.

”Recently?”

”Yesterday.”

Selene looked toward the surrounding fields.

”There’s another set.”

She pointed farther ahead.

The group moved toward it.

Two sets of wheel tracks.

One wagon had continued along the road.

The other had turned toward the fields.

Ronan looked at Kael.

Kael said nothing.

Ronan turned back.

”Follow it.”

They left the road.

The tracks led toward a small farmhouse.

A farmer stood outside holding a wooden hoe.

When he saw the armed group approaching, his expression immediately became cautious.

Ronan raised an open hand.

”We mean no harm.”

The farmer looked at the weapons.

”That’s easy to say.”

Kael remained behind the others.

Ronan stepped forward.

”We’re looking for travelers who passed through yesterday.”

The farmer’s eyes shifted toward the road.

”I saw a wagon.”

”Which way did it go?”

The farmer pointed toward the hills.

”That way.”

”Alone?”

The farmer hesitated.

”No.”

Ronan waited.

”There were three men with it.”

Garrick frowned.

”Three?”

”Armed men.”

Selene stepped closer.

”Did they have the travelers?”

The farmer lowered his eyes.

”I don’t know.”

Ronan studied him.

”You do.”

The farmer swallowed.

”I saw them stop the wagon.”

”And?”

”I went inside.”

Garrick’s expression hardened.

”You left them?”

The farmer’s face reddened.

”What would you have had me do?”

Garrick opened his mouth.

Ronan stopped him.

”Did you see where they went?”

The farmer pointed toward the hills.

”There is an old watchtower.”

Ronan nodded.

”How far?”

”An hour by horse.”

Kael finally spoke.

”Thank you.”

The farmer looked toward him.

His eyes widened slightly.

He recognized the young noble.

Kael simply nodded.

The farmer bowed his head.

”My lord.”

Kael turned away.

”Let’s go.”

The old watchtower stood on a hill overlooking the road.

Its stone walls were cracked.

Half of the roof had collapsed years ago.

No banners flew above it.

No guards stood outside.

Yet there were fresh tracks around the entrance.

Ronan raised his hand.

Everyone stopped.

He looked toward Kael.

Kael nodded once.

Ronan pointed toward the left.

Selene moved right.

Garrick and Harlan remained near the horses.

Tavian disappeared behind a cluster of rocks.

Merek and Marek waited near the rear.

Kael stayed in the middle.

They approached the tower without speaking.

Then a voice came from inside.

”You should have stayed away.”

Ronan stopped.

Three men stepped from the doorway.

All wore dark clothing.

Their faces were uncovered.

One carried a curved blade.

Another held a spear.

The third had a crossbow.

Ronan’s hand moved toward his sword.

”Where are the travelers?”

The man with the spear smiled.

”You’ve been asking too many questions.”

Kael stepped forward.

”Where are they?”

The man’s eyes moved toward him.

”You.”

Kael waited.

”You are the lord of the estate.”

”Yes.”

The man’s smile disappeared.

”We didn’t expect you.”

Kael’s expression remained calm.

”Who sent you?”

None of them answered.

The man with the crossbow raised his weapon.

Ronan moved.

The bolt flew.

Ronan knocked it aside with his sword.

Garrick charged.

His blade crashed against the spear.

Selene released an arrow.

The man with the curved blade barely avoided it.

The courtyard erupted.

Kael didn’t move immediately.

He watched.

The three men weren’t common bandits.

Their movements were disciplined.

They knew how to fight together.

That confirmed his suspicion.

Someone had organized them.

Ronan drove the spearman backward.

Garrick struck from the side.

The man twisted away.

”Don’t let them separate us!” he shouted.

Kael heard it.

He smiled faintly.

They had trained together.

But so had his people.

”Ronan.”

The older warrior glanced at him.

”Break their formation.”

Ronan understood.

He changed direction.

Instead of attacking the spearman, he stepped backward.

The enemy followed.

Ronan suddenly turned.

Garrick struck.

The spear fell from the man’s hands.

Selene’s arrow landed in the dirt beside the crossbowman’s foot.

He froze.

Tavian appeared behind him.

A short blade rested against the man’s throat.

”Drop it.”

The crossbow fell.

The third man tried to flee.

Merek caught him.

The struggle lasted only a few moments.

Then silence returned.

Garrick wiped his sword.

”That was easier than yesterday.”

Ronan looked at him.

”Don’t become arrogant.”

Garrick smiled.

”I was only saying—”

”That’s how people die.”

Garrick’s smile faded.

Kael stepped forward.

”Search the tower.”

They entered.

The inside smelled of damp stone.

There were empty crates.

Rope.

Food.

Weapons.

And several pieces of clothing belonging to the missing travelers.

Kael picked one up.

”This confirms it.”

Selene looked around.

”They were here.”

Tavian pointed toward a narrow staircase.

”Tracks.”

They followed them upward.

The top floor was empty.

No travelers.

No captives.

Only a wooden table with several papers scattered across it.

Kael picked one up.

A list of names.

Villages.

Caravan routes.

Departure dates.

He read silently.

Then his expression changed.

Ronan noticed.

”What is it?”

Kael handed him the parchment.

Ronan read it.

His eyes narrowed.

”They’ve been watching the roads.”

”Yes.”

”For months.”

Kael nodded.

Marek picked up another sheet.

”This one has the eastern road.”

Merek found another.

”And the southern villages.”

Selene looked toward Kael.

”This is larger than the western road.”

Kael folded the parchment.

”Much larger.”

He looked at the three captured men.

”Take them back.”

Ronan nodded.

”And the missing travelers?”

Kael looked toward the open window.

The road stretched across the valley below.

”They moved them.”

”Where?”

”I don’t know.”

Tavian stepped closer.

”But we’ll find them.”

Kael looked at him.

Then at the others.

He saw something different now.

Yesterday, they had acted as individuals trying to survive.

Today, they had begun acting as a group.

That mattered.

Kael turned toward the stairs.

”We return to the estate.”

Garrick frowned.

”We’re leaving them?”

”For now.”

”Why?”

Kael looked back.

”Because whoever organized this operation now knows we found them.”

His gaze hardened.

”They will move.”

Ronan understood immediately.

”And when they do...”

Kael nodded.

”We follow.”

The ride home was quieter.

Nobody celebrated.

The discovery had changed the nature of their work.

This was no longer simply a matter of monsters attacking travelers.

Someone was studying the roads.

Someone was collecting information.

Someone had enough men to abduct travelers and move them without being discovered.

And they had been doing it for some time.

When the estate finally came into view, Kael slowed his horse.

He looked toward the walls.

Then toward the surrounding countryside.

His mind returned to the idea he had spent five days building.

People who could be hired.

People who could be tested.

People who could travel where soldiers could not.

People who could investigate problems before they became disasters.

Perhaps his idea was needed sooner than he had expected.

But Kael wasn’t ready to build it yet.

There were still too many questions.

Who were these men?

Who commanded them?

Where were the missing travelers?

And why were they watching the roads?

Kael dismounted.

”Take the prisoners to the holding room.”

Ronan nodded.

”Understood.”

Kael looked toward Lily, who had come into the courtyard.

”Prepare the records chamber.”

She looked at him.

”More work?”

Kael glanced at the parchment in his hand.

”Much more.”

Lily sighed.

”I knew you were going to say that.”

Kael smiled.

Then his expression became serious again.

He walked toward the estate.

Behind him, the others began unloading their weapons.

The road had given them their first answer.

Now Kael needed to discover the question hiding behind it.

And somewhere beyond the hills, whoever had been watching the roads had just learned something as well.
