Kael remained seated in his chamber long after the candle had burned halfway down.

Ledgers, maps, and reports covered the table before him.

Worker wages.

Stone deliveries.

Timber contracts.

Iron shipments.

The numbers did not lie.

Blackwood’s treasury was shrinking.

Not dangerously.

Not yet.

But if the current pace continued, the territory would soon reach a point where every new improvement meant delaying another.

A gentle knock interrupted his thoughts.

”My lord?”

”Come in.”

Edwin Ashcombe entered carrying another ledger bound in dark leather.

The elderly butler bowed respectfully before placing it on the table.

”I thought this might interest you.”

Kael looked at the title.

Blackwood Annual Revenue.

He opened it.

The records stretched back nearly twenty years.

Taxes from the villages.

Harvest yields.

Market fees.

Forest permits.

Everything had been carefully recorded.

Kael read in silence.

The numbers barely changed from year to year.

Blackwood had survived.

It had never truly grown.

Edwin watched quietly.

”What do you see, my lord?”

Kael closed the book.

”A territory content with remaining the same.”

Edwin nodded slowly.

”Many nobles would call that stability.”

Kael looked toward the window.

”I call it stagnation.”

For the first time in many years, Edwin smiled.

”I was hoping you would.”

The following morning, Kael requested the presence of Lily, Garrick Ironhand, Master Rowan, Bram, and Walter.

They gathered in the manor’s meeting room shortly after sunrise.

A large map of Blackwood lay across the center of the table.

Kael waited until everyone had taken a seat.

”We have a problem.”

Garrick leaned back in his chair.

”Only one?”

A few chuckles spread through the room.

Kael smiled faintly.

”Our treasury cannot support every improvement at once.”

Walter folded his weathered hands.

”The harvest will help.”

”It will.”

Kael nodded.

”But harvests cannot build roads by themselves.”

Master Rowan rubbed his beard.

”So we choose.”

”Exactly.”

Lily picked up her quill.

”What comes first?”

Silence filled the room.

Kael looked around the table instead of answering immediately.

”If you were ruling Blackwood...”

He looked at Walter.

”What would you improve first?”

The old farmer didn’t answer immediately.

He studied the map.

”The wells.”

Everyone looked toward him.

Walter pointed toward one of the villages.

”A bad harvest can be survived.”

He moved his finger toward another village.

”A broken house can be repaired.”

Then toward a well-marked on the records.

”But if clean water is lost...”

He shook his head.

”People die.”

Kael nodded thoughtfully.

He turned to Bram.

”And you?”

”The roads.”

Bram answered without hesitation.

”If the roads improve, every village benefits.”

Kael looked toward Garrick.

”The forge.”

Garrick crossed his arms.

”If my forge grows, every farmer gets better tools.”

He glanced toward Rowan.

”Every carpenter gets better nails.”

Then toward Bram.

”Every soldier gets better weapons.”

Rowan snorted.

”Spoken like a blacksmith.”

Garrick grinned.

”You asked.”

Kael looked at Rowan.

”What about you?”

The carpenter scratched his beard.

”Houses.”

”Houses?”

”Families are already arriving.”

Rowan rested both hands on the table.

”If we don’t prepare now, they’ll build wherever they please.”

Walter nodded.

”He isn’t wrong.”

Kael finally turned toward Lily.

”And your opinion?”

She looked slightly surprised.

”My opinion?”

”You’ve heard everyone else’s.”

Lily looked down at the map.

After a long pause, she quietly answered,

”I think...”

Everyone waited.

”...Blackwood needs hope.”

The room became silent.

Lily looked embarrassed.

”I know that isn’t a proper answer.”

Kael shook his head.

”It might be the best answer yet.”

She looked at him.

”If people can see that Blackwood is changing...”

She spoke more confidently now.

”...they’ll believe tomorrow will be better than yesterday.”

No one spoke.

Even Garrick had become thoughtful.

Kael slowly nodded.

”Then that’s our answer.”

That afternoon, notices were placed in every village.

By order of Lord Kael Asterion:

Road construction shall continue.

Damaged wells shall be repaired.

New homes shall be built near the northern road for families settling within Blackwood.

Workers shall receive fair wages and daily meals.

The announcements spread quickly.

Some villagers were skeptical.

Others laughed.

Several older nobles dismissed Kael’s plans as youthful ambition.

But the people who worked with their hands reacted differently.

One mason packed his tools.

A carpenter from another village asked whether there was work.

A widow whose sons had no land quietly decided to move to Blackwood before winter.

The changes were still small.

But they had begun.

Three days later.

Captain Roland hurried into the courtyard.

”My lord.”

Kael looked up from speaking with Garrick.

”What is it?”

”A merchant caravan has arrived.”

”A merchant?”

”Yes.”

”They’re asking for permission to enter.”

Kael exchanged a glance with Lily.

”We’re not a trading town.”

”Not yet,” she replied.

They walked together toward Blackwood’s gate.

Six wagons stood outside.

Each was loaded with cloth, pottery, barrels, and supplies.

The merchant at the front dismounted.

He wore a dark green traveling cloak over well-made clothes, and though dust covered his boots, his posture remained dignified.

He bowed politely.

”My lord.”

Kael returned the gesture with a nod.

”I am Kael Asterion.”

”I know.”

The merchant smiled.

”My name is Orrin Belmore.”

Kael noticed immediately that the name was unfamiliar.

Good.

A new man.

Not another repeated name.

”What brings you to Blackwood, Master Belmore?”

The merchant looked toward the road behind him.

”We heard the roads here were becoming safer.”

Kael’s eyes narrowed slightly.

”So soon?”

”Merchants speak.”

Orrin smiled.

”Faster than nobles.”

A few Black Dragon soldiers laughed quietly.

”I also heard,” Orrin continued, ”that Blackwood pays honest coin.”

Kael remained silent.

”And honest coin attracts honest craftsmen.”

Kael glanced toward Garrick.

The blacksmith folded his arms proudly.

”It seems your reputation has traveled before you.”

The merchant nodded.

”Reputation travels faster than wagons.”

Kael studied him carefully.

”Do you intend to trade?”

”If you’ll have us.”

Kael looked toward the workers repairing the road.

Then toward the nearly finished homes.

Then back at the merchant.

Only a few days ago...

Blackwood had struggled to attract new families.

Now merchants had begun arriving on their own.

The changes were happening faster than he expected.

Kael extended his hand.

”Welcome to Blackwood.”

Orrin clasped it firmly.

”I believe this territory has a promising future.”

Kael smiled.

”So do I.”

As the wagons rolled through the gates, Edwin quietly stepped beside Kael.

”My lord.”

”Yes?”

”The first step is always the hardest.”

Kael watched the caravan enter the manor grounds.

”What comes after the first step?”

Edwin looked toward the growing settlement beyond the northern road.

”You simply keep walking.”

Kael stood silently.

For the first time since inheriting Blackwood...

The territory wasn’t merely surviving.

It was beginning to breathe.

And somewhere beyond the borders of Blackwood, unseen eyes had already begun taking notice of the young lord whose small territory was changing faster than anyone had expected.
