The final report ended.

The emperor remained seated while the gathered family and court waited.

Kael sat quietly among his siblings.

He could still feel the Empress’s gaze from across the chamber.

He didn’t look toward her.

Instead, he watched his father.

The emperor lifted one of the reports.

”Each of you was given a different task. I did not expect identical results.”

His gaze moved across the chamber.

”I expected judgment.”

One by one, the emperor addressed the accomplishments of his children.

Some had strengthened provincial defenses.

Some had settled disputes between noble houses.

Some had improved trade.

Others had failed to complete their assignments.

Those failures were not treated as disgrace.

Instead, the Emperor questioned them about their decisions.

Why had they chosen one path?

Why had they ignored another?

What would they change?

Kael listened carefully.

This was different from the trials he had faced outside the capital.

There, survival had been simple.

Fight.

Adapt.

Win.

Here, victory was harder to measure.

A decision could help one province and harm another.

A noble could become an ally today and an enemy tomorrow.

A choice made for the good of the Empire could still make someone hate you.

Kael was beginning to understand why his father had given each of them different responsibilities.

He wasn’t simply testing their ability to command.

He was learning what kind of rulers they could become.

The Emperor finally set the reports aside.

”You have all heard one another’s results.”

Nobody moved.

”Some of you performed admirably.”

A few siblings straightened.

”Some of you made mistakes.”

Others lowered their eyes.

”And some of you discovered problems you did not know existed.”

The Emperor looked toward Kael.

”That is not failure.”

Kael raised his eyes.

”It is knowledge.”

The emperor stood.

”Dismissed.”

Chairs shifted.

The chamber immediately filled with quiet conversation.

Kael waited until the crowd began moving before rising.

He wanted to leave.

He wanted his estate.

A bath.

A proper meal.

And preferably several hours without anyone asking him about ancient seals.

He had barely taken three steps when someone caught his arm.

Kael turned.

Darius.

”You disappeared for weeks and came back with half the northern provinces talking about you.”

Kael pulled his arm free.

”I didn’t ask them to.”

Darius laughed.

”You never do.”

Kael looked at him.

”What do you want?”

”Nothing.”

Darius glanced around the chamber.

”I wanted to see whether the stories were true.”

”What stories?”

”That you came back different.”

Kael’s expression remained neutral.

”Do I look different?”

Darius studied him.

”Yes.”

Kael raised an eyebrow.

Darius smiled.

”You’re quieter.”

”I’ve always been quiet.”

”Not like this.”

Kael looked toward the palace doors.

”Travel changes people.”

Darius nodded.

”I suppose it does.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Darius lowered his voice.

”Be careful.”

Kael looked at him.

”Of what?”

Darius glanced toward the nobles.

”Everyone.”

Before Kael could ask what he meant, Darius walked away.

Kael watched him disappear into the crowd.

That warning stayed with him.

The palace corridor was nearly empty when Kael finally left the chamber.

He expected to walk directly toward the outer gates.

Instead, he found the emperor’s attendant waiting.

”Your Highness.”

Kael stopped.

”Again?”

The attendant smiled politely.

”His Majesty requests a private conversation.”

Kael closed his eyes for a moment.

”Of course.”

He followed.

The Emperor was standing near a window when Kael entered.

No guards stood inside.

No officials.

Only father and son.

The Emperor didn’t turn immediately.

”You handled yourself well.”

Kael stood several steps away.

”Thank you.”

”You spoke carefully.”

”I had to.”

”Why?”

Kael looked at him.

”Because I don’t know who I can trust.”

The emperor finally turned.

His expression was serious.

”That is a dangerous lesson for someone your age.”

”Is it wrong?”

”No.”

The emperor walked toward the table.

”But if you begin believing everyone is your enemy, you’ll eventually make enemies where none existed.”

Kael thought about that.

”Then how do I know who to trust?”

”You don’t.”

His father picked up a cup.

”You watch.”

Kael listened.

”You observe what people do when they believe nobody is watching.”

The Emperor took a drink.

”Words are cheap.”

Kael nodded.

”What about my siblings?”

The emperor looked at him.

”What about them?”

”Are they enemies?”

”No.”

”Allies?”

”Not necessarily.”

Kael frowned.

His father continued.

”They are your family.”

”That doesn’t answer the question.”

”It is the answer.”

The Emperor placed the cup down.

”Some of your siblings may stand beside you one day.”

He paused.

”Some may stand against you.”

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

”And what will you do?”

The Emperor’s gaze hardened.

”I will judge them by what they choose.”

Kael understood.

His father wasn’t going to choose favorites.

Not Kael.

Not any of them.

That realization was strangely comforting.

”Why did you really call me here?”

The Emperor studied him.

”Because I want you to understand something before you leave.”

Kael waited.

”The northern reports concern me.”

”I know.”

”No.”

The Emperor shook his head.

”You don’t.”

He moved closer.

”I have ruled this empire for many years. I have seen droughts, wars, rebellions, plagues, and famine.”

His voice lowered.

”But what you described beneath the mountain is different.”

Kael remained silent.

”I don’t know what was sealed there.”

”Then who does?”

”I don’t know.”

Kael stared at him.

For once, his father looked uncertain.

That alone was disturbing.

”But I know this,” the Emperor continued.

”If the seal is truly weakening, we cannot allow panic to spread.”

Kael nodded.

”What do you want me to do?”

”Nothing.”

Kael frowned.

”Nothing?”

”Return to your estate.”

His father walked back toward the window.

”You have been away long enough.”

Kael almost smiled.

”That is the first thing you’ve said tonight that I wanted to hear.”

The emperor gave him a rare smile.

”Go home, Kael.”

Kael bowed.

”Good night, Father.”

He turned toward the doors.

”Kael.”

He stopped.

”Yes?”

The emperor looked at him.

”Rest.”

Kael smiled faintly.

”I’ll try.”

He left.

Outside the palace, the evening air was cool.

Kael mounted his horse.

Torren was waiting nearby.

”Finally.”

Kael looked at him.

”You waited?”

”I’ve learned that following you into a palace without permission is a poor decision.”

Kael laughed quietly.

”Wise.”

They rode through the capital.

The streets were still busy despite the late hour.

Kael watched the people.

He had spent weeks traveling through villages where a missing soldier could mean the difference between life and death.

Here, the capital seemed protected by layers of walls, guards, wealth, and authority.

Yet the problems beyond those walls were growing.

Kael looked ahead.

His estate was waiting.

For the first time since leaving, he was going home.

But as they approached the road leading toward his lands, Kael noticed something.

A rider was waiting beneath a tree.

The man wore a dark traveling cloak.

He held no banner.

No crest.

No visible allegiance.

Torren slowed.

”Do you know him?”

Kael shook his head.

The stranger looked directly at Kael.

Then he turned his horse and disappeared into the darkness.

Kael stared after him.

He didn’t chase.

He simply watched.

Torren frowned.

”Should we follow?”

”No.”

”Why?”

Kael looked toward the road ahead.

”Because if he wanted us to follow him...”

He paused.

”He would have waited.”

Kael urged his horse forward.

His estate was only a few hours away.

And after weeks on the road, he wanted nothing more than to see home again.

He didn’t know that the moment he crossed his estate gates, he would find that things had changed while he was gone.
