Three days passed.

By the fourth morning, Kael was standing in the estate courtyard when Orin finally returned.

The steward approached carrying a thick bundle of parchment.

His dark brown robe was dusty from travel, and his normally neat beard had become slightly disordered.

”My lord.”

Kael turned.

”Did you find them?”

”Some.”

”How many?”

”Twenty-three names worth considering.”

Kael’s eyes moved to the papers.

”Only twenty-three?”

”Those are the ones I could verify.”

”Good.”

Orin looked slightly surprised.

Kael continued.

”I’d rather have twenty-three trustworthy names than two hundred strangers.”

Orin handed him the list.

Kael looked through it.

Hunters.

Former soldiers.

Caravan guards.

Trackers.

A few people known for dealing with beasts.

Some had worked for noble houses.

Others had lived their entire lives outside the cities.

Kael noticed something.

”Where are the names of the mercenaries?”

Orin pointed toward the bottom.

”There are six.”

Kael read them.

Then frowned.

”Why are they separated?”

”Because the villagers spoke poorly of them.”

Kael looked up.

”Explain.”

”Three were accused of abandoning a caravan.”

”Accused?”

”No proof.”

Kael nodded.

”And the others?”

”Two were known for excessive violence.”

”And the sixth?”

Orin hesitated.

”He refused payment from a village that could not afford his fee.”

Kael looked at the name.

”Why?”

”He said the people had already lost enough.”

Kael studied the parchment.

”Bring him.”

Orin blinked.

”Him specifically?”

”Yes.”

”What about the others?”

”Not yet.”

Kael folded the list.

”Before anyone joins this organization, I want to know what kind of person they are.”

The man arrived before noon.

He was broad-shouldered and tall, wearing a faded leather coat over a dark tunic.

A worn sword hung from his hip.

His boots were heavily scratched from years of travel.

He stopped several steps from Kael and bowed.

”My lord.”

Kael studied him.

”What is your name?”

”Ronan.”

”How long have you traveled these roads?”

”Most of my life.”

”Military service?”

”Seven years.”

”Why did you leave?”

Ronan’s eyes lowered briefly.

”I disagreed with my commander.”

Kael raised an eyebrow.

”About?”

”Villagers.”

”Explain.”

Ronan looked toward the estate walls.

”A village was attacked by beasts. We were ordered to protect the road instead of the village.”

Kael’s expression changed.

”What happened?”

”The village survived.”

”How?”

”Badly.”

Ronan’s voice remained calm.

”I left the army afterward.”

Kael was quiet.

”You refused payment from another village.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”They had nothing.”

”Why didn’t you demand payment?”

Ronan looked at him.

”Because they were hungry.”

Kael nodded.

That answer mattered more than his swordsmanship.

But Kael wasn’t finished.

”If I offer you payment to protect a village, will you obey my orders?”

”Depends.”

Kael raised an eyebrow.

”On what?”

”If the order gets innocent people killed.”

Torren, standing nearby, glanced at Kael.

Kael almost smiled.

”At least you’re honest.”

Ronan remained serious.

”What are you building?”

Kael looked toward the courtyard.

”Something that doesn’t exist yet.”

Ronan frowned.

”That tells me nothing.”

”Good.”

Kael handed him a sheet of parchment.

”Come back tomorrow.”

Ronan read it.

A location.

A time.

Nothing else.

He looked at Kael.

”What happens tomorrow?”

”You’ll find out.”

Ronan smiled faintly.

”Fair enough.”

He bowed and left.

By sunset, another seven people had arrived.

Kael spoke to each one personally.

A former cavalryman who had lost his left eye.

A woman who had spent years hunting dangerous beasts in the eastern forests.

A young tracker who could follow footprints through rain.

A former caravan guard who knew nearly every road in the region.

Two brothers who had worked as village hunters.

And an older man who had served as a soldier for thirty years before retiring.

Kael asked each of them the same questions.

Why did they fight?

Who did they protect?

What would they do if an order was wrong?

What would they do if the reward wasn’t enough?

What would they do if someone weaker than them was in danger?

Some answers disappointed him.

Others surprised him.

By nightfall, Kael had narrowed the list.

Seven remained.

Lily entered the courtyard carrying a tray.

”You’ve been interviewing people all day.”

Kael nodded.

”Seven.”

”Seven what?”

”Seven worth testing.”

She looked around.

”Where are they?”

”Waiting.”

Lily sighed.

”You’ve already started.”

Kael smiled.

”I told you.”

”You said you were going to test the idea.”

”This is the test.”

Lily looked at him.

”That isn’t what I meant.”

Kael laughed.

The seven stood together in the courtyard.

Ronan was among them.

Kael stepped before them.

He wore a simple dark tunic with his sword at his side.

”No one here has been accepted.”

The seven listened.

”You’ve been selected because someone believed you might be capable.”

He looked at each person.

”That is not enough.”

The former cavalryman shifted his weight.

Kael continued.

”You will be given a task.”

The seven exchanged glances.

”You will not be told how to complete it.”

He paused.

”You will only be given the problem.”

Ronan smiled.

Kael noticed.

”Those who succeed will continue.”

”And those who fail?” one of the hunters asked.

”You go home.”

”That’s all?”

”That’s all.”

The hunter nodded.

Kael looked toward the estate gates.

”Your task begins tomorrow.”

The group dispersed.

Ronan remained behind.

”May I ask something?”

Kael nodded.

”What happens if we all fail?”

Kael smiled.

”Then I start again.”

Ronan laughed quietly.

”I thought you’d say that.”

He left.

Kael turned toward Lily.

She looked at him.

”You’ve already decided what you’re going to do, haven’t you?”

Kael looked toward the dark horizon.

”Tomorrow will tell us.”

That night, Kael returned to his chamber.

The parchment from the mountain remained hidden among his belongings.

He took it out.

The strange fragment rested in his palm.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then—

A faint pulse.

Kael froze.

The system appeared.

[Unknown Material.]

The same message.

Kael frowned.

”Again?”

The fragment pulsed once more.

This time, a second message appeared.

[Resonance increasing.]

Kael stared.

Then the message vanished.

He closed his hand around the fragment.

Something about it had changed.

Not enough to understand.

Not enough to explain.

But enough to remind him that while he was building something new above ground...

Something ancient was still waiting beneath the world.

Kael placed the fragment away.

Tomorrow, he would test seven people.

And if even one proved capable...

The first foundation of his idea would finally be laid.
