The captain stared at Kael as the creatures drew closer.

”Open the gate?”

Kael kept his eyes on the road.

”Yes.”

The captain hesitated.

”Your Highness, those beasts—”

”Look at them.”

The captain did.

The creatures were not charging.

They weren’t spreading out.

They weren’t hunting.

They were running.

Some stumbled over one another as they rushed toward the settlement. Others repeatedly looked over their shoulders.

Fear was visible even from the wall.

Kael pointed toward the gate.

”Open it.”

The captain finally gave the order.

”Open the gate!”

The guards pulled the heavy mechanism.

Wood and iron groaned.

The gate opened just enough for the first creature to pass.

It sprinted through.

Then another.

The guards backed away, weapons raised.

None of the creatures attacked.

They rushed straight through the settlement and continued down the southern road.

One of them stumbled.

Its legs gave out.

Kael watched it struggle back to its feet.

It looked toward the mountains.

Then it ran again.

Torren lowered his weapon.

”I’ve never seen anything like that.”

”Neither have I.”

More creatures passed through.

A few were injured.

One was missing an arm.

Another had deep burns across its back.

Kael’s expression tightened.

Those injuries hadn’t come from the villagers.

Something had hurt them.

Badly.

Then the last creature crossed the gate.

Silence followed.

The captain looked at Kael.

”Should we close it?”

”Yes.”

The gate slammed shut.

Kael remained on the wall.

He watched the road.

Nothing followed.

Not yet.

A guard hurried up the stairs.

”Captain!”

The captain turned.

”What is it?”

”The southern road is covered with tracks.”

Kael looked at him.

”How many?”

”We don’t know.”

The guard swallowed.

”Dozens.”

Kael stepped down from the wall.

”Show me.”

They reached the southern gate.

The road was torn apart.

Claw marks crossed the dirt.

Trees had been broken.

Some creatures had left blood behind.

Kael crouched.

He touched one of the tracks.

Cold.

Not naturally cold.

His ice power reacted.

A faint layer of frost appeared beneath his fingertips.

Kael pulled his hand away.

The system appeared.

[Foreign energy detected.]

Kael stared at the message.

The same energy.

The same strange sensation from the river.

But this time, there was something different.

The energy was weaker.

Much weaker.

It seemed to be fading.

Kael stood.

”These creatures came from the north.”

The captain nodded.

”Yes.”

”They crossed the mountains?”

”We believe so.”

Kael looked at the broken road.

”No.”

The captain frowned.

Kael pointed toward the tracks.

”They didn’t cross the mountains.”

He followed the trail with his eyes.

”They came through something.”

Torren looked at him.

”A tunnel?”

”Perhaps.”

Kael looked north.

”There are old roads through these mountains.”

The captain’s face changed.

”Old roads?”

”Used during the northern campaigns.”

Kael remembered his father’s lessons.

”The roads were abandoned decades ago.”

The captain shook his head.

”Nobody travels there anymore.”

Kael looked at the blood on the ground.

”Something does.”

By dawn, the settlement had become restless.

The people had seen the creatures.

Rumors spread quickly.

Some believed the Empire was under attack.

Others believed the creatures were being driven south by an army.

Some claimed a demon had awakened in the mountains.

Kael ignored the rumors.

He needed facts.

He gathered the captain, Torren, and Lyra inside the guardhouse.

A map covered the table.

Kael placed a marker on the settlement.

”These creatures came from here.”

He placed another farther north.

”And the river is here.”

Torren studied the map.

”There’s a mountain pass between them.”

Kael nodded.

”An old one.”

Lyra leaned over the table.

”Could the creatures have been living there?”

”Possibly.”

”Then why leave now?”

Kael didn’t answer.

Because he already knew the answer was connected to the river.

Something had changed.

The seal had reacted.

The wells had changed.

The creatures had begun fleeing.

And now something was pushing them farther south.

The pattern was undeniable.

But there was still one missing piece.

What was causing it?

A soldier entered the room.

”Your Highness.”

Kael turned.

”What?”

”We found something.”

The soldier placed a torn piece of metal on the table.

Kael looked at it.

It was part of a weapon.

Not a monster’s claw.

Not a farmer’s tool.

A blade.

Old.

Rust covered most of it.

But near the center was a familiar symbol.

Three curved lines around a circle.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

”The same mark.”

Torren looked at him.

”The one from the river?”

Kael nodded.

The captain looked confused.

”What does it mean?”

Kael picked up the metal.

”I don’t know.”

He turned it over.

There were scratches on the other side.

Not words.

A pattern.

Kael studied it.

Then he recognized the shape.

It wasn’t decoration.

It was part of a seal.

He looked at the captain.

”Where did you find this?”

”Near the northern road.”

”How far?”

”Half a day’s ride.”

Kael immediately made his decision.

”We’re going there.”

Torren stared at him.

”We just escaped the monsters.”

Kael looked toward the mountains.

”We aren’t chasing the monsters.”

He placed the broken metal on the table.

”We’re following what frightened them.”

By midday, Kael and his soldiers were ready.

The captain approached him before he left.

”Your Highness.”

Kael turned.

”If you’re going north, take men from the settlement.”

Kael shook his head.

”No.”

”But—”

”Keep your men here.”

The captain looked confused.

”Why?”

Kael pointed toward the road.

”If those creatures return, this settlement needs defenders.”

The captain understood.

Kael wasn’t taking soldiers away.

He was leaving them behind.

”Then how many will go with you?”

”Only those already traveling with me.”

Torren looked at Kael.

”You know we’re going into trouble.”

Kael mounted his horse.

”That’s usually where we end up.”

Torren sighed and climbed onto his own horse.

Lyra followed.

The small group rode north.

The mountains grew larger with every mile.

The road slowly disappeared beneath thick trees.

Soon there were no farms.

No houses.

No travelers.

Only forest.

Kael stopped.

Ahead, something had been carved into the stone.

A doorway.

Ancient.

Half buried.

And above it—

Three curved lines surrounding a circle.

Kael dismounted.

He approached slowly.

His night aura stirred.

The same feeling returned.

But this time...

There was something else.

A heartbeat.

Deep beneath the mountain.

Thump.

Kael froze.

Another.

Thump.

Torren heard it too.

His face went pale.

”Tell me you heard that.”

Kael stared at the stone doorway.

”I did.”

The mountain trembled.

Dust fell from above.

Kael drew his sword.

The ancient doorway slowly cracked open by itself.

Darkness waited beyond it.

Kael took one step forward.

Then another.

And from somewhere deep inside the mountain...

Something breathed.
