The governor stopped before a narrow iron door at the end of the corridor.

Unlike the rest of the archive, there was no wooden sign above it.

Only an Imperial seal.

Kael studied the lock.

”How long has this been sealed?”

Governor Halric looked uncomfortable.

”Longer than I’ve served here.”

”Who is permitted inside?”

”Only the governor and the Imperial archivist.”

Kael looked at him.

”And now?”

Halric removed a ring of keys from his belt.

”Now you.”

The key turned.

Click.

The iron door opened.

A stale breath of air escaped from the room.

Kael entered first.

There were fewer shelves inside than he expected.

Instead, the chamber contained several large chests.

Each bore an Imperial seal.

Torren followed.

He looked around.

”These records must be important.”

Halric nodded.

”Most concerns matter; the provincial office isn’t permitted to discuss them.”

Kael walked toward the nearest chest.

”What kind of matters?”

”Military movements. Noble disputes. Tax records. Old investigations.”

Kael stopped.

”Old investigations.”

Halric nodded.

Kael looked toward the chests.

”Then we start with the river.”

Halric moved toward the shelves.

”There should be a collection from twenty-five to thirty years ago.”

He pulled out a thick ledger.

Dust fell from its cover.

Kael took it.

The title had nearly faded.

Provincial Waterway Reports.

He opened it.

The first pages contained ordinary records.

Flooding.

Repairs.

Bridge construction.

Irrigation disputes.

Kael turned several pages.

Then he stopped.

A report from twenty-three years ago.

The same year written on the authorization he had found.

He began reading.

The report described an unusual collapse along the river.

A section of the riverbank had fallen away after several days of heavy rain.

Beneath it, workers had discovered an underground passage.

Kael’s eyes moved down the page.

The Imperial authorities had ordered the area sealed.

No explanation was given.

Kael turned the page.

A second report followed.

This one was written several months later.

Unauthorized excavation detected beneath the western riverbank.

Kael frowned.

”Someone went back.”

Halric stepped closer.

”What?”

Kael showed him the page.

The governor read it.

His face changed.

”I’ve never seen this.”

”That’s why it’s in here.”

Kael continued reading.

The report stated that several workers had entered the underground passage.

Only two returned.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

”What happened to the others?”

Halric shook his head.

”There isn’t a record.”

Kael turned the page.

There was another entry.

Then another.

Each became shorter.

Each mentioned strange sounds.

Unexplained movement.

Missing workers.

Then finally—

All access to the chamber is forbidden by Imperial order.

Kael closed the ledger.

Nobody spoke.

Torren looked toward the sealed door.

”So this has been happening for decades.”

Kael nodded.

”At least.”

Lyra stepped closer.

”Then why would anyone build the dam only recently?”

Kael looked at her.

”Because something changed.”

He opened the ledger again.

The answer might be there.

He searched the later records.

Five years.

Ten years.

Fifteen.

Nothing.

Then—

Seven years ago.

Kael stopped.

A short report.

Minor disturbances detected beneath the river.

Kael read it twice.

”Seven years.”

Torren frowned.

”Why is that important?”

Kael didn’t answer immediately.

Seven years ago.

That was the year he had left the Empire.

He continued reading.

The report stated that the disturbances had stopped after several weeks.

No further action was taken.

Kael turned another page.

Nothing.

Another.

Nothing.

Then a final note.

Should the disturbances return, the original seal must not be disturbed.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

That explained the chains.

But it raised another question.

Why had the disturbances returned?

He looked at the date of the latest report.

Three months before the villages began losing water.

Kael slowly closed the book.

The timing was too precise.

A sound came from the corridor.

Everyone turned.

A servant hurried toward them.

He stopped outside the chamber and bowed.

”Governor.”

Halric stepped forward.

”What is it?”

The servant glanced toward Kael.

”A message from the capital.”

Kael held out his hand.

”Give it to me.”

The servant approached and placed the sealed letter in his palm.

Kael broke the seal.

His eyes moved across the page.

His father’s handwriting.

The message was short.

Return when your investigation is complete.

Kael folded the letter.

There was no demand for an immediate return.

No warning.

His father was giving him time.

Kael looked back at the archive.

He still had questions.

But the villages had water now.

The dam was stable.

House Valen had agreed to open its records.

And he had learned enough to understand that the chamber beneath the river was not something he should investigate alone.

Kael turned toward Halric.

”I want copies of these records.”

”Of course.”

”Every report concerning the river.”

”Yes.”

”Every report concerning the chamber.”

Halric hesitated.

”Some of those records are sealed.”

Kael looked at him.

”Then make copies of the sealed records as well.”

Halric bowed.

”Yes.”

Kael handed him the ledger.

”And the authorization bearing that symbol.”

Halric’s expression tightened.

”You believe the symbol is important.”

”I know it is.”

Kael turned toward the door.

”But I don’t yet know why.”

Outside, evening had begun settling over the province.

Kael stood beside his horse.

The six soldiers prepared for the journey back.

Torren approached.

”You’ve been quiet.”

Kael looked toward the river.

”I’m thinking.”

”About the chamber?”

”Among other things.”

Torren smiled.

”That’s dangerous.”

Kael looked at him.

”Why?”

”Because every time you start thinking like that, we end up somewhere unpleasant.”

Lyra laughed quietly behind them.

Kael shook his head.

”You two talk too much.”

Torren grinned.

”Someone has to.”

Kael mounted his horse.

Before leaving, he looked toward the fields.

Water moved through the channels.

Farmers were already preparing the soil.

The immediate problem had been solved.

That mattered.

Not every victory needed to involve bloodshed.

Kael turned his horse toward the road.

”Let’s go.”

The soldiers followed.

As they rode away, Kael looked back one final time.

The river flowed peacefully beneath the fading sunlight.

No chains could be seen from the surface.

No ancient chamber.

No strange symbols.

Nothing that would tell an ordinary traveler what slept beneath the water.

Kael touched the small wooden box hidden beneath his coat.

The fragment remained inside.

He had no intention of using it.

Not until he understood what it was.

And beneath the river, far beyond the reach of sunlight, the ancient seal remained silent.

For now.
