Kael did not stop running until daylight appeared ahead.

The narrow passage opened onto the forest.

Cold morning air struck his face.

He stepped outside and turned immediately.

The mountain stood behind them.

Silent.

Unmoving.

No smoke.

No tremor.

Nothing suggested that an ancient chamber had just collapsed beneath it.

Torren stumbled out behind him and bent over, breathing heavily.

”I hate caves.”

Lyra walked past him.

”That wasn’t a cave.”

Torren straightened.

”That makes me hate it even more.”

Kael ignored them.

His attention remained fixed on the mountain.

The words were still in his mind.

The seal weakens.

The blood has returned.

His fingers slowly tightened.

”Kael.”

He turned.

Lyra was watching him.

”You’ve been staring at that mountain since we came out.”

”I know.”

”What did the inscription mean?”

Kael was silent.

He could have told them what he believed.

But belief wasn’t knowledge.

And he had learned enough to know that the wrong answer could be more dangerous than no answer.

”I don’t know yet.”

Torren frowned.

”You don’t know?”

”No.”

”You looked like you understood it.”

”I understood the words.”

Kael looked toward the mountain.

”Not their meaning.”

That answer seemed to satisfy neither of them.

But neither pressed him.

Kael turned toward the horses.

”We leave.”

They rode hard.

Nobody complained about the pace.

The mountain remained behind them as they traveled south.

Kael kept looking back.

Nothing followed.

By midday, the forest thinned.

The road widened.

They passed several travelers, but Kael barely noticed them.

His thoughts kept returning to the chamber.

The chains.

The carvings.

The eyes.

And that voice.

It had called his name.

Not his title.

His name.

That was what bothered him most.

He had never told anyone about the voice.

He wasn’t even certain it had truly spoken.

But he knew what he had heard.

Kael lowered his eyes toward his hand.

A faint trace of frost covered his fingertips.

He closed his fist.

The frost disappeared.

His powers had reacted to the chamber.

All three.

His blood.

His ice.

His night aura.

Why?

The system had given him abilities that should have been impossible.

Light.

Blood.

Night.

Ice.

Perhaps the answer was connected to the system.

Or perhaps the system itself didn’t know.

That possibility unsettled him.

By late afternoon, they reached a military checkpoint.

Several soldiers stood beside a wooden barrier.

The commander approached.

He wore a dark brown cuirass over a gray tunic, with a scar running from his left eyebrow toward his cheek.

He looked at Kael’s insignia and immediately bowed.

”Your Highness.”

Kael dismounted.

”How far from the capital?”

”Two days, if you ride without stopping.”

Kael nodded.

The commander looked behind him.

”You traveled north?”

”Yes.”

”Did you encounter the creatures?”

Kael’s expression hardened.

”Several times.”

The commander’s face changed.

”How many?”

”Enough.”

The commander glanced at the soldiers.

”We’ve received reports of strange movement along the northern roads.”

Kael looked at him.

”How many reports?”

”Seven in the last week.”

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

”From where?”

The commander pointed toward a table inside the checkpoint.

”Come.”

A rough map had been spread across it.

Small wooden markers covered the northern provinces.

Kael stared.

There were more than seven.

The commander noticed his expression.

”Some are unconfirmed.”

Kael moved closer.

”Who sent these?”

”Local garrisons.”

”Have any been verified?”

”Three.”

Kael touched one of the markers.

”Here?”

”Yes.”

”And here?”

”Yes.”

Kael looked at the positions.

The reports weren’t random.

They formed another line.

Southward.

He slowly stepped back.

The creatures were moving farther from the northern mountains.

The problem was spreading.

The commander looked at him.

”Your Highness?”

Kael looked toward the road.

”Send riders to every garrison along this route.”

”With what message?”

”Tell them to watch the wells.”

The commander frowned.

”The wells?”

”If the water changes color, temperature, or taste, nobody drinks from it.”

The commander immediately understood that this wasn’t a request.

”Yes, Your Highness.”

”And send word to the provincial governors.”

”All of them?”

”Every province along the northern road.”

The commander bowed.

”It will be done.”

Kael turned to leave.

Then stopped.

”One more thing.”

The commander looked up.

”If the creatures appear, don’t pursue them.”

The man hesitated.

”Even if they attack?”

”If they attack, defend the settlement.”

”And if they run?”

”Let them.”

The commander looked confused.

Kael’s voice lowered.

”They’re running from something.”

They left the checkpoint before sunset.

For the first time since entering the mountains, Kael allowed himself to relax.

Only slightly.

Torren rode beside him.

”You gave that commander an interesting order.”

Kael glanced at him.

”Which one?”

”Not to chase the creatures.”

”They’re dangerous.”

”Exactly.”

”If they’re running from something stronger, chasing them could lead soldiers directly toward it.”

Torren thought about that.

”That’s fair.”

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he looked at Kael.

”Do you think we’ll have to fight whatever is beneath that mountain?”

Kael stared ahead.

”I don’t know.”

”Would you?”

Kael looked at him.

”Would I what?”

”Fight it.”

Kael was quiet.

The question wasn’t as simple as Torren thought.

If something beneath the mountain threatened the Empire, he couldn’t ignore it.

But he had also learned something during the expedition.

Strength didn’t mean rushing toward every danger.

Sometimes surviving long enough to understand the enemy was the wiser choice.

”If it threatens my people...”

Kael looked toward the road.

”Then I’ll fight.”

Torren nodded.

”I figured.”

That night, they camped beside a stream.

The soldiers prepared food while Kael sat beneath a tree.

Lyra approached carrying a wooden bowl.

”You haven’t eaten.”

Kael looked at the bowl.

”What is it?”

”Stew.”

He took it.

”Thank you.”

She sat across from him.

For several moments, neither spoke.

Then she said:

”You don’t trust us.”

Kael looked up.

”Why would you say that?”

”You keep things to yourself.”

Kael took a bite.

”So do you.”

Lyra smiled.

”Fair.”

The fire crackled between them.

Finally, she spoke again.

”Whatever was beneath that mountain...”

Kael waited.

”It frightened you.”

Kael looked into the fire.

”Yes.”

Lyra seemed surprised by the honesty.

”Why?”

Kael thought about the eyes.

”The thing I saw wasn’t afraid of me.”

He looked at her.

”That’s what frightened me.”

Lyra didn’t respond.

Kael continued eating.

Much later, after everyone had gone to sleep, Kael remained awake.

The wooden box sat beside him.

He stared at it.

Then slowly opened it.

The strange fragment rested inside.

Nothing happened.

Kael reached down.

His fingers touched the stone.

The system appeared.

[Unknown Material.]

Kael waited.

The message changed.

[Partial connection established.]

His eyes narrowed.

Another message appeared.

[Bloodline resonance detected.]

Kael’s breathing stopped for a moment.

”Bloodline?”

The system remained silent.

Kael stared at the fragment.

He thought about his mother.

Her kingdom.

The ice bloodline that had belonged to her family for generations.

The power that had awakened within him despite traditions saying it should only appear among the women of that bloodline.

Could the fragment be responding to that?

Before he could think further, the fragment became warm.

Kael immediately pulled his hand away.

The warmth disappeared.

Then the system displayed one final message.

[Connection insufficient for identification.]

Kael closed the box.

He didn’t like how often those words were appearing.

Insufficient.

Unknown.

Incomplete.

For once, even the system didn’t have the answer.

Kael looked toward the dark sky.

Whatever had been sealed beneath the mountain was connected to something far older than the current Empire.

And somehow...

He had become part of that mystery.

He placed the box back inside his coat.

Tomorrow they would continue toward the capital.

He would tell his father about the attacks.

He would report the strange water.

He would report the ancient records.

But the chamber beneath the mountain?

Kael wasn’t sure how much he should reveal.

Not until he understood what he had seen.

Far behind them, beneath the mountain, the darkness remained still.

Then, deep within the earth—

Thump.

Kael’s eyes opened.

He looked north.

Nothing moved.

But he knew that sound.

And this time...

It had traveled farther.
