The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

Capítulo 1888: Chapter 1888: Guo Zheng’s Backup Plan

Qi Lie looked at the paper in his hand, somewhat puzzled, and raised his head to ask, “What are these…”

“Lord, Chen Bing said Zhou Tiedong embezzled the Chen Family’s heirloom, a Jade Pot worth three hundred taels. That’s why he was sentenced to prison, and not only that, the Zhou family has to compensate with money, making Zhou Tiedong serve three years in jail.”

Qi Lie nodded, “Indeed.” Just now, Chen Bing and Zhou Tiedong had already detailed the case when confronting each other.

Guo Zheng then said, “But the Chen Family doesn’t even have such an heirloom. The supposed Jade Pot was bought in the second year I worked as an accountant for them. Though it wasn’t cheap, it definitely wasn’t worth three hundred taels, but rather seventy taels of silver. What the Lord holds is the receipt from when the Jade Pot was initially purchased, detailing its appearance, material, price, and unique characteristics.”

“When they first bought the Jade Pot, Chen Bing liked it very much, but seventy taels wasn’t cheap for the Chen Family. Buying a pretty but useless Jade Pot, Mrs. Chen surely wouldn’t agree. So Chen Bing hid it from his family and only took me along to help verify its authenticity. After buying the Jade Pot, the receipt was temporarily entrusted to me at the accounting office, until he could find a reason to tell Mrs. Chen. Additionally, Chen Bing instructed me to balance the accounts so Mrs. Chen wouldn’t notice anything unusual.”

Outside the door, Ms. Pan heard these words and instantly widened her eyes, staring incredulously at Chen Bing.

“However, two years later, Chen Bing’s younger daughter Chen Qiu, playful as she was, liked the Jade Pot when she saw it and accidentally broke it. Chen Bing was heartbroken. Mrs. Chen didn’t know the Jade Pot’s price, so she thought it was a fake. Seeing Chen Bing lose his temper, she got very angry, and the two had an argument at that time.”

“The Jade Pot shattered and couldn’t be repaired; naturally, the receipt from when it was bought became useless. Chen Bing asked me to burn the receipt, but during four years in the Chen Family as an accountant, I knew him somewhat and understood he wasn’t as kind as he appeared. So, I kept this receipt secretly as a precaution.”

Guo Zheng thought about leaving himself an escape route, afraid Chen Bing would use this to manipulate him.

Indeed, Chen Bing found faults with him before he was dismissed, but didn’t use the Jade Pot as an excuse; just Constable Li was enough to make Guo Zheng suffer.

Guo Zheng, older and more experienced than Zhou Tiedong, knew Constable Li was in league with Chen Bing afterward and didn’t try to retaliate against him. Even if he had considerable evidence, he wouldn’t easily show it to others.

Unthinkably, years passed, and the Jade Pot was still put to use, convicting Zhou Tiedong.

Guo Zheng took a deep breath, “Lord, that’s how it happened. The Jade Pot that Chen Bing claimed Zhou Tiedong embezzled had already been broken. In addition to the receipt from the purchase, I also present proof from the jeweler stating the Jade Pot couldn’t be repaired, hoping Lord will scrutinize it.”

Onlookers whispered as Qi Lie carefully examined the items in his hand, nodded, and asked Chen Bing, “Do you have anything to say?”

Chen Bing never imagined Guo Zheng would have this trick up his sleeve; he truly went easy on him back then.

He looked up, flustered, and said, “L-Lord, I indeed bought a Jade Pot before, and after it broke, I bought another one. The later purchase was worth three hundred taels, the one Zhou Tiedong embezzled.”
