King of the Wilderness

Chapter 51: Chapter 51: Surprises and the Wisdom of the Carrying Pole

Lin Yu’an’s mind spun quickly, searching for a solution.

Suddenly, his eyes lit up, and a tool commonly used for carrying heavy loads in China flashed into his mind!

”I thought of a good plan, using our ancient Chinese wisdom—the carrying pole!”

He swiftly searched the vicinity for suitable materials, needing a wooden rod with enough toughness and some elasticity as the main body of the ”carrying pole.”

At the same time, using the nylon rope he picked up this time, he tied and hung the deer meat.

Using a handsaw, he quickly felled a young birch tree with a diameter of about five to six centimeters and a length of about two meters, carefully removing all branches.

Then he tied small bundles of already decomposed deer meat with nylon rope, in sizes convenient for hanging.

The massive Deer Hide and usable entrails were also carefully sorted and tied.

He then hung the tied ”meat bundles” and Deer Hide at the front and back ends of the carrying pole using ropes of varying lengths.

Then he carefully adjusted their positions and weight to achieve a relatively balanced state.

”The essence of the carrying pole lies in using the principle of leverage to distribute weight to the shoulders and body core, maintaining balance through front and back compensation.”

”In China, an experienced bearer can carry over two hundred pounds of weight over mountains with a small carrying pole.”

”Though I’m not a professional bearer, it should be no problem!”

Lin Yu’an adjusted the positions of the meat bundles while explaining to the camera the ingenuity of this ancient tool.

”The core of the carrying pole principle is to achieve labor savings through leverage balance, and through the flexible structure of the ropes, reduce the impact of dynamic loads while walking.”

When all the deer meat and hides were hung on both ends of the carrying pole, he placed the birch rod across his shoulder, took a deep breath, applied slight force with his legs, straightened his back, and slowly lifted the heavy ”load!”

”It’s a bit heavy, but bearable! Now I can save effort and transport all the spoils to the Pioneer in one go!”

With his steps, the carrying pole gently swayed up and down rhythmically on his shoulders, forming a subtle dynamic balance between the front and back ends.

From the hunting location to his moored ”Pioneer,” there was still more than a kilometer left to cover, with a patch of bushes in between that needed crossing.

This posed quite a challenge to his stamina and sense of balance.

Just as he was about to emerge from the patch of bushes, a familiar, slightly spicy scent was suddenly carried into his nostrils by a breeze.

”Hmm? This smell...”

Lin Yu’an’s steps abruptly halted, he sniffed, trying to discern the faint trace in the air.

It was a unique spicy aroma akin to onions and garlic, undoubtedly tempting for a wilderness survivor.

He gently laid down the carrying pole and started searching in the direction of the scent.

He pushed aside dense bushes and walked toward the edge of a relatively sunny forest clearing.

After walking a few meters, the scene before him made his eyes widen and his face light up with incredulous delight!

On the soft and slightly sandy slope, densely packed green plants were growing!

The cylindrical leaf stalks sprouted from the ground, with some ending in dried umbels resembling tiny umbrellas.

And most striking were the scattered sightings of bulbous bulbs with pale purple skin near the ground!

”Fu*K! My God! These are... wild onions!”

Lin Yu’an almost blurted out, his voice full of excitement and disbelief.

He quickly moved ahead, bent down, and gently pulled the soil from the root of a plant!

A bulb slightly larger than a quail egg, emitting a rich onion-garlic scent, was carefully pulled out intact.

”No doubt! These are wild onions! Judging by their shape and smell, they are likely wild Allium hookeri or a similar species!”

Lin Yu’an excitedly showed the small bulb to the camera.

”It’s simply a pleasant surprise! A natural seasoning! My grilled meat, my meat soup will be upgraded to a whole new taste!”

”This is a true treasure. Besides providing a unique spicy flavor, it removes the gamy smell of meat.”

”They are rich in vitamin C, can boost immunity, and the bulbs have antibacterial properties. This small island is truly my lucky place!”

He surveyed the area, realizing that the wild onions spread over at least several dozen square meters,

The plants grew thrivingly, clearly indicating that the soil and sunlight conditions were very suitable for their growth.

Lin Yu’an excitedly rubbed his hands but didn’t immediately start large-scale collection, because he still had the task of transporting deer meat.

He quickly pulled out a dozen or so wild onions, roughly bundled them, and hung them on one end of the carrying pole.

”I’ll bring some back first, and after processing the deer meat, I’ll come back for a proper harvest!”

This unexpected surprise discovery significantly reduced the fatigue Lin Yu’an felt from transporting heavy goods.

Finally, before nightfall, Lin Yu’an carried all his ”victory fruits” successfully to the lakeside docking area of the Pioneer.

”Whew... At last, I made it!”

He gently placed the carrying pole down and let out a long breath.

Looking at the pile of spoils beside the canoe, and the unexpectedly harvested wild onions, an unprecedented sense of satisfaction filled his heart!

After a short rest, Lin Yu’an started loading these abundant spoils onto the Pioneer.

He first folded the gigantic Deer Hide several times to form a thick and flat square, then spread it at the center bottom of the canoe.

Next, he began transporting the large portions of deer meat that had been segmented.

The two heaviest hind legs, each weighing at least a dozen kilograms, were placed in the middle-rear position of the cabin.

Pressing against the Deer Hide at the bottom, symmetrically on both sides, to lower the center of gravity as much as possible.

Then came the rib sections with large chunks of chest meat, laid flat in the middle to fill the gaps between the front and rear legs.

While loading, he occasionally gently shook the canoe with his hand, feeling the shift in the center of gravity.

He made slight adjustments to the position of the meat blocks, striving for optimal balance.

Soon, the Pioneer was loaded to the brim, and the waterline visibly dropped considerably.

Lin Yu’an pressed the hull with his hand, estimated the weight, and said, ”Seems like it’ll require two trips. If all the prey is loaded and including my weight, the gunwale might level with the water surface.”

Fortunately, by this time, the evening breeze had completely halted, and the lake—once whipped into waves by the wind—had returned to its smooth, mirror-like state.

Under the sunshine, the lake shimmered with layers of flowing golden phosphorescence, remarkably beautiful.

He initially knelt in the center of the cabin, waiting for his body to adapt to the slight rocking of the boat before gradually adjusting to a more power-efficient sitting posture.

This stretch of lake shore, merely over two hundred meters wide, was slightly challenging to paddle due to the boat’s weight. He couldn’t afford any carelessness, constantly watching the boat’s condition.

It took nearly ten minutes of paddling, eventually reaching the shallow shore on the opposite side without any mishap.

”Aha! The first wave arrived safely!”

”But now isn’t the time to rest; I need to transport back the remaining deer meat, deer head, Deer Hide, and those useful organs.”

”It’s getting late, must hurry.”

Without any delay, Lin Yu’an took a few quick sips of water, then paddled the Pioneer back to the island opposite.

This time, the load wasn’t as heavy as the first, making the canoe much lighter, significantly increasing his paddling speed.

After completing the second wave of transport, he didn’t pause for rest, promptly continued using the carrying pole to move the meat entirely back to the stone house shelter.

Captured on camera, he tied up these slabs of deer meat with parachute cord, then suspended them three meters above the ground.

”Suspending them like this effectively prevents small rodents or weasel family animals from stealing the food.”

Of course, this was merely a show for the camera.

After turning off the camera, Lin Yu’an quietly stowed all the deer meat, Deer Hide, and the organs into secret storage.

He had to ensure that such a large amount of fresh meat scent wouldn’t attract Grizzly Bears or cougars or other large carnivores.

With all the ”superficial work” and ”secret operations” completed, the night sky was already filled with stars.

Lin Yu’an stood by the warm stove, feeling the warmth emanating from the hearth.

Having been busy for most of the day, the smoked fish, nuts, and Beaver oil he ate at noon had long since been depleted.

”All the spoils have been safely stored! Now, it’s finally time to reward myself!”

He picked up a piece of the freshest deer tenderloin, waving it in front of the camera.

”I can’t wait to taste this fresh mule deer meat!”

”Tonight, I’m going to prepare a wilderness version of the ’Presidential Feast’ for myself!”
