Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 462: Chapter 457: The Field Test

Location:Mid Ring, Vel’thari Containment — tunnel network beyond the dead spot

Date/Time:Early Sparkfall, 9942 AZI — Day 121, 244 days remaining

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

They crossed the dead spot boundary at what the datapad called 0600, and the clicking started within minutes.

Jayde felt the difference immediately. Not in her ears. In her body. The dead spot’s silence had been a second skin for weeks, and stepping back into the corruption-saturated air of the Mid Ring was like walking from a pressurized cabin into a gale. The hum returned. The faint copper-ozone taste. The constant low-grade awareness that something in her blood was broadcasting, and the sealed ecosystem around her could feel it.

The exoskeleton shifted with her stride. The hydraulic pistons at her hips and knees compensated for each step, the servos whirring at a frequency Zhi had confirmed was below the colony’s detection threshold. The suit amplified every movement without adding noise. Jayde moved through the tunnel with the smooth, powerful gait of a woman whose enhanced muscles were being multiplied by mechanical advantage, and the weight of the chitin-alloy armor on her shoulders and chest registered as barely present.

The repeating crossbow sat against her shoulder. Twelve bolts in the magazine. The siege bow was in the ring, pre-loaded, one thought from her hand.

Behind her, Eden moved in her own suit. The lighter frame tracked the doctor’s smaller body with precision, the hydraulics scaled down but the effect transformative: Eden carried her full combat loadout — precision crossbow, six-bolt magazine, bolt quiver, armor plates — without the weight dragging at her stride. She moved like a soldier. The exoskeleton had given her what cultivation hadn’t: the physical capacity to operate in a combat zone alongside a Grade 2 Elite.

On Eden’s shoulder, Zhi was rigid. The serpent’s scales had shifted the moment they crossed the boundary, the deep calm blues of the dead spot cycling to the faster, sharper greens and silvers of active threat assessment. The wings were pressed close. Not flat. Close. The difference between hiding and readiness.

[Clicking,] Zhi said through the bond. [Far. Getting closer. Six... no. Eight. Big ones. Bigger than the haulers.]

”Eight contacts,” Eden relayed. ”Bigger than workers. Approaching from the northeast passage.”

Jayde’s tactical mind locked on. Eight. Bigger than workers. The reinforcement patrols they’d heard after their first hunt had sounded heavier, deeper. The datapad’s caste reference said: Ravagers. Army ant analogue. Horse-sized. Assault infantry. Pack hunters, groups of six to twelve. Acid glands. Coordinated tactics.

Eight Ravagers.

She’d designed the kill zone three days ago, working from the datapad’s tunnel maps and the pheromone-trail data she’d accumulated across months of observation. A junction where three tunnels converged on a natural chamber, thirty meters across. The ceiling was high enough for the exoskeleton’s full range of motion. The three entry tunnels created natural firing lanes. The chamber’s center held a cluster of rock formations that provided cover and broke sight lines.

”Position,” Jayde said.

They moved.

***

Eden took the elevated position. A shelf of natural rock on the chamber’s eastern wall, three meters up, accessible via the exoskeleton’s enhanced climb — the hydraulic arms drove Eden up the rock face in seconds, the mechanical fingers finding purchase in crevices that unaugmented hands couldn’t grip. From the shelf, she had line-of-sight down all three entry tunnels. The precision crossbow was seated against her armored shoulder. Six bolts. Each one aimed at the anatomy she’d mapped across months of dissection: the relay hub behind the sensory-pit cluster. The ganglion junction beneath the thorax plate. The acid-gland connection at the base of the abdomen.

Jayde stayed low. Center of the chamber, behind the rock formations, the repeating crossbow ready. The siege bow was one ring-pull away.

[Close now,] Zhi said. [Very close. The clicking is loud. They’re fast. Faster than the haulers.]

The clicking filled the northeast tunnel. Not the dry ratcheting of worker columns. This was deeper. Heavier. A rolling percussion that resonated through the stone and arrived in Jayde’s chest before it reached her ears. The sound of things that weighed as much as horses moving with a coordination that had nothing to do with intelligence and everything to do with chemical synchronization.

The first Ravager came around the corner.

Jayde’s breath caught.

The data had said horse-sized. The data had been conservative.

The creature filled the tunnel mouth, its body blocking the bioluminescent light behind it and casting a shadow that stretched across the chamber floor. Low-slung, wide, segmented like the workers but on a scale that made the comparison obscene. The chitin was darker than the workers’ pale amber: a deep, burnished rust-red, the plates thicker, the overlap denser, and the surface wasn’t smooth. It was ridged. Grooved. The texture of armor that had been designed not just to absorb impact but to deflect strikes along channels that directed force away from the joints.

Six legs. Each one as thick as Jayde’s thigh, jointed in the same five-point articulation as the workers but reinforced with secondary chitin ridges that protected the joint membranes. The front pair weren’t modified into hauling pads. They were weapons. Pointed. Serrated at the tips. Built to grip and tear and pin prey against the tunnel floor while the mandibles did their work.

The mandibles. Twice the length of a worker’s. Curved inward, the sawtooth serration coarser, designed for cutting through chitin and stone and anything else that got between them. They opened and closed with a wet, mechanical rhythm that was audible across thirty meters.

And at the base of the abdomen, the acid glands. Jayde could see them: twin swellings, dark and distended, pulsing faintly with the same rhythm as the mandibles. Full. Ready.

The second Ravager followed the first. Then the third. They came in pairs, spreading into the chamber with a fluid coordination that the worker columns had never displayed. Not single-file. Flanking. The first two took the center, the third and fourth split left and right, and behind them Jayde could hear the clicking of four more, filling the tunnel, pressing forward.

Pack hunters. Flanking pattern. Exactly what the datapad had described.

”Now,” Jayde said.

Eden fired.

The precision bolt caught the lead Ravager’s sensory-pit cluster at fifteen meters. Dead center. The pits cracked, and the creature’s head snapped sideways, and it staggered, the front legs losing coordination, the body swinging into the second Ravager and tangling their legs. Not a kill. The relay hub on a Ravager was deeper than a worker’s, protected by a secondary chitin plate that the workers didn’t have. The bolt had blinded it. The hub was intact.

Jayde fired. The repeating crossbow’s lever-action cycled a bolt into the rail, and she pulled the trigger, and the bolt hit the tangled second Ravager in the thorax-abdomen junction. The Federation-alloy broadhead punched through the worker-equivalent membrane, and the creature’s rear legs buckled. Amber fluid sprayed from the wound in a thick stream, darker than the workers’, denser.

Two down. Six coming.

The flanking pair reached the rock formations. Fast. Faster than anything that size should have been, the legs driving with a power that shook the chamber floor. Jayde felt the vibration through the exoskeleton’s boots. The suit compensated, the hydraulic stabilizers keeping her balance as the ground trembled.

She fired again. Three bolts in rapid succession: lever-cock, fire, lever-cock, fire, lever-cock, fire. The first hit the left flanker’s front leg joint, the only membrane visible from her angle. The leg buckled. The creature stumbled but didn’t stop. The other two bolts hit chitin plate and deflected, the ridged armor doing exactly what it was designed to do: channeling the impact along grooves that dispersed the force.

Standard bolts bounce off the plate ridges. Joint shots only. Or—

She stored the repeating crossbow. Pulled the siege bow from the ring.

The weapon materialized in her hands: heavy, ground-mounted, three hundred pounds of stored energy waiting behind compound cams. She planted the stock against the rock formation, aimed at the left flanker’s center mass, and fired.

The siege bolt didn’t bounce.

The penetrator broadhead hit the ridged chest plate and went through it. Not around, not between the grooves, not deflected along the channels. Through. The densest alloy in the debris field, shaped into a hardened core, carrying three hundred pounds of force behind a point the size of a coin. The chitin cracked in a radial pattern from the impact, the ridges splitting, the plates separating, and the bolt buried itself in the body cavity behind.

The Ravager’s legs locked. Its mandibles cycled once, twice, and stopped. It collapsed forward onto the chamber floor, the impact shaking loose debris from the ceiling, and it was still.

One kill. The siege bow worked.

She stored it. Pulled the second siege bow. The right flanker was closing, acid glands pulsing, the mandibles open. Fifteen meters. Ten.

The acid came first.

A spray of liquid from the abdominal glands, arcing across the gap between them. Jayde threw herself sideways. The exoskeleton’s hydraulics drove the dive faster than her muscles alone could have managed, the suit converting her intent into motion with an amplified power that cleared her from the acid’s path by inches. The liquid hit the rock formation behind her, and the stone hissed. Smoked. The corruption-laced acid ate into the surface, leaving a bubbling crater the size of her palm.

She fired the second siege bow from the ground. Prone. Not the ideal firing position. The bolt caught the right flanker low, hitting the ventral surface where the chitin was thinner, and the penetrator went through and exited from the dorsal ridge in a spray of amber fluid and chitin fragments.

Two kills. Two siege bows spent. One left in the ring.

Eden’s crossbow fired from the shelf. Three precision bolts in rapid succession, each one targeting a different Ravager in the main group now flooding through the tunnel mouth. The doctor wasn’t aiming at plate. She was aiming at anatomy: the ganglion junction beneath the second thorax plate, the nerve bundle that connected the front legs to the relay hub. Her bolts were lighter, her crossbow weaker, but the targets she chose didn’t need force. They needed precision.

A Ravager’s front legs stopped working. Then another’s sensory pits went dark. The blinded creature sprayed acid wildly, the stream hitting the tunnel wall, the ceiling, another Ravager in the flanking formation. Friendly fire. The acid ate into the struck Ravager’s chitin, and it thrashed, mandibles snapping at the source.

Chaos.

Jayde pulled the third siege bow. Fired into the mass. The bolt took a Ravager through the head-plate, the penetrator core punching through the secondary protection and destroying the relay hub behind it. Clean kill. The body dropped, the legs still twitching on reflex.

She stored the spent siege bow. Drew the repeating crossbow again. Five bolts left in the magazine. She fired them all in eight seconds, targeting joint membranes on the three remaining Ravagers. Two hits. Three deflections. The Ravager chitin was learning her — the creatures were angling their bodies to present the ridged plates, the grooved armor, the surfaces that deflected standard bolts.

But the ones she’d hit were hurt. Joint-damaged. Slowed. And Eden was firing from above, six precise bolts cycling through the lighter crossbow, each one finding a nerve junction or a ganglion point, each one degrading the coordination of the pack.

The last three Ravagers broke.

Not fled. Withdrew. The coordination that had driven their flanking attack reversed, the pack pulling back toward the tunnel mouth with the synchronized precision of a military unit executing a tactical retreat. The acid-spraying one covered the withdrawal, the glands pulsing, and Jayde dropped behind the rock formation as the liquid arced across her position and ate into the stone.

Then they were gone. The clicking receded. The chamber was quiet except for the hissing of acid on rock and the ticking of the exoskeleton’s cooling systems and the sound of Jayde’s breathing inside the chitin-alloy armor.

Five dead. Three withdrawn.

***

Jayde sat against the rock formation and ran the debrief while her hands shook.

The exoskeleton had saved her life. The acid dodge — the hydraulics had amplified her dive speed past what her unaugmented body could have achieved, clearing the acid spray by inches. Without the suit, she’d have taken the hit. Corruption-laced acid on exposed skin. She didn’t want to calculate what that would have meant.

Eden climbed down from the shelf. Her exoskeleton tracked the descent smoothly, the lighter frame handling the three-meter drop with a controlled ease that would have broken an unaugmented ankle. She was breathing hard. Her hands were steady.

”The precision shots worked,” Eden said. ”Ganglion junctions. Every one I hit degraded their coordination. But the secondary chitin over the relay hub is a problem. Standard bolts can’t reach it.”

”Siege bolts can.”

”Siege bolts can. But you’ve used all three.”

Jayde nodded. Three siege bows, three kills. The weapons worked. The penetrator cores went through Ravager plate. But three shots for three kills left zero margin, and the pre-loaded-in-ring doctrine only worked if you had bows TO pre-load.

”I need more siege bows,” Jayde said. ”Six minimum. Twelve preferred. And I need a way to reload them in the field.”

”Can the exoskeleton handle the draw?”

Jayde considered it. Three hundred pounds via stirrup, with the suit’s amplification. The hydraulics could manage it. Slower than workshop loading, but possible.

”Maybe,” she said. ”I’ll test it.”

On Eden’s shoulder, Zhi was watching the dead Ravagers. The serpent’s scales had cycled through the full spectrum during the fight — panic whites, combat silvers, the flashing greens of active threat tracking. Now they were settling. The dark eyes moved from body to body with an expression that Jayde was learning to read: the quiet, ancient evaluation of a creature that remembered being eaten by things like these and had just watched them die.

[They’re bigger than I remember,] Zhi said. [The ones that ate me were smaller. Worker-sized. These are different.]

”These are the guards,” Eden said.

[The guards died too.]

”Yes.”

[Good.]

Jayde looked at the five Ravager corpses. Horse-sized bodies, ridged rust-red chitin, acid-pitted stone around them. The largest thing they’d killed in the Harrowing. The first combat caste to fall to Federation engineering and Charling anatomy research and two women who refused to stay prey.

She started cataloguing. The Ravager anatomy would go on the datapad: chitin thickness, ridge patterns, acid gland capacity, secondary relay hub protection. Eden was already moving toward the nearest body, diagnostic eyes scanning the joints, the plates, the nerve bundles that her precision bolts had found.

”The acid compound,” Eden said, crouching beside a body. ”If I can sample the gland contents, I might be able to determine the chemical composition. Understand what we’re dealing with.”

”Take what you need.”

Eden drew her knife. Began cutting.

Day one hundred and twenty-one. Two hundred and forty-four remaining.

The janitors had met the guards. The guards had lost.

And somewhere in the deeper tunnels, the colony processed the loss of eight Ravagers and adjusted, because that was what the colony did, and the adjustment would be Jayde’s next problem, and the problem after that, and the problem after that, for two hundred and forty-four more days.

But today, the arsenal had held. Today, two women in exoskeletons and chitin-alloy armor had walked into a Ravager pack and walked out again. Today, the clicking had learned something new.

It could die.
