Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 421: Chapter 416: The Notice

Location:Obsidian Academy — Training Grounds / Corridors / Medical Quarter

Date/Time:Late Scorchwind, 9941 AZI

Realm:Lower Realm — Doha

Ryo’s breathing was the first thing she noticed.

Steady. Controlled. The careful inhale of someone receiving news that mattered enormously. His gray eyes didn’t widen. His hands didn’t shake. He stood in the quiet corner of the training yard where Jayde had asked him to meet — away from the sparring rings, away from the students, away from anyone who might see whatever his face did next — and listened.

”Your uncle has been located,” Jayde said. ”Upper Realm. Alive. The intelligence came through Heiteng’s network, cross-verified through two independent sources.”

The relief moved through him like a wave he was trying to hold still. His jaw worked once. His hand went to the cord around his neck — his father’s signet ring, hidden under his robes — and held it.

”My father,” Ryo said. Not a question about strategy or timelines. His first thought was for Lord Ashenveil, who’d been carrying this weight since his brother went dark. ”Does he know?”

”He’ll be informed through the same channels.”

Ryo nodded. The gray eyes were bright — not tears, not quite, but the shine of someone who’d been holding a fear they hadn’t fully acknowledged and had just been told it might be okay. His uncle was alive. His father could stop wondering.

”Located,” he said, steadying. ”Not rescued.”

”Not yet. He’s being held in circumstances that require planning, not a raid. The intelligence is solid. The logistics are being worked.”

”We’ll get him out.” Not a question. Not a plea. A statement, delivered with the quiet certainty of a young man who’d spent two years watching plans turn into systems and systems turn into results.

”We will,” Jayde said. ”Not today. Not this month. But we will.”

Ryo held her gaze for a moment longer. Then he touched the signet ring once more — a gesture she’d seen him make a hundred times without knowing what it meant until now — and left.

Jayde watched him cross the training yard. Straight back. Measured stride. He turned not toward the dormitories but toward the medical quarter. Toward Eden.

She noted it. The boy went to Eden when he needed to sit with something. The healer, not the commander. The relationships in her orbit forming their own architecture without her directing it.

[He is relieved,] Reiko observed through the bond. Warm. [He smells like someone who just set something heavy down.]

”His father’s been carrying this longer than he has.”

[Family,] Reiko said. Simple. Approving. The cub’s understanding of pack bonds — uncomplicated, absolute.

The notice went up on Hammerday.

Jayde saw it on her way to the formation workshop — a sheet of fresh parchment pinned to the main corridor’s announcement board, the ink crisp, the institutional script precise. Formal. The kind of announcement that carried the weight of tradition behind every word.

THE HARROWING — FIFTIETH CYCLESelection begins Flamefade. Eligible candidates: Grade 4 and Grade 5 students only. Registration through department heads.

Below the heading, the details. The sealed dimension. The trial period — one year inside. Bracelets keyed to safe-point locations within the dimension, used for emergency teleportation to secured bases and for tallying kills. A main base, fortified, where the portal would reopen in exactly one year. If you hadn’t made it back to the main base when the year ended and the portal opened, you missed extraction. And the portal wouldn’t open again for fifty years.

Selection was competitive. Grade 4 and 5 Elite students numbered somewhere north of twenty thousand across both divisions. The Harrowing took twenty-five hundred. Qualifying trials in Flamefade would determine who made the cut.

And the rewards. That was the part the students were reading with hungry eyes. Kill points accumulated through the bracelet tallying system could be exchanged in the Artifact Hall upon return — a vault of high-tier artifacts, formation tools, cultivation resources, and weapons that the Academy maintained specifically for Harrowing survivors. The best artifacts were heirloom-grade. The kind that founded noble houses. A commoner student who entered the Harrowing with nothing and survived with enough kill points could walk out carrying an artifact that elevated their entire bloodline. Families had risen from obscurity to minor nobility on the strength of a single Harrowing survivor’s haul.

That was why twenty thousand students would fight for twenty-five hundred spots. Not the glory. The artifacts.

And at the bottom, in smaller script: Historical mortality rate: approximately thirty-five percent.

One in three.

The corridor was already buzzing. Students clustered around the board — upper-years mostly, the ones for whom this announcement was personal rather than theoretical. The energy was electric. Excited. Voices layering over each other, the pitch of young people who’d just been told the thing they’d been training for was real and approaching.

”My mother survived it,” a tall Flamewrought student was telling a knot of listeners. ”Fifty years ago. She said the first three days were the worst — after that, you find your rhythm or you don’t.”

”The bracelets are the key,” another voice. An older student, sharp-faced, already calculating. ”They teleport you to the nearest secured base if you’re about to die. Without one, you’re on your own out there.”

”I heard the dimension changes every cycle. Different terrain. Different threats. The veterans’ stories only help so much.”

”Still better than going in blind. My instructor said the last cycle’s survivors mapped the first three zones before half of them —” The speaker stopped. Glanced at the mortality number on the notice. Continued in a quieter voice.

”One year,” a second-year said, half to himself. ”One year inside. And if you don’t make it back to the main base when the portal opens —”

”Fifty years.” The sharp-faced student again. Flat. ”You wait fifty years for the next opening. If you survive that long.”

”But if you DO survive —” A stocky Grade 4 student, eyes bright with the hunger of someone from a family with nothing. ”The Artifact Hall. My grandfather told me about a man from his village. Went in with a borrowed sword and came out with a Stormforge blade. His family’s been minor nobility for three generations off that one artifact.”

The corridor hummed with it. Fear and ambition in equal measure, braided together the way they always were when the stakes were high enough to change a life or end one.

A hand clapped her shoulder. Meifen — Grade 5, dual-affinity Inferno-Galebreath, one of the students who sparred with Jayde on occasion and had stopped underestimating her six months ago. She was grinning.

”Tough luck, Ashford. Grade 2 — you don’t even qualify.” Meifen jerked her chin at the notice. ”And by the time the next one comes around, fifty years from now? You’ll be long graduated. This is it. Once in a generation. If you’re not in Grade 4 or 5 right now, you missed it.”

”I’ll survive the disappointment,” Jayde said.

”You might be the only one.” Meifen’s grin faded slightly. ”Half the Grade 4 students are going to register, and most of them won’t make the cut. Twenty thousand trying for twenty-five hundred spots. The qualifying trials alone will be brutal.” She lowered her voice. ”I’ve heard even some Temple-affiliated students are trying to find a way in. Pulling connections, petitioning department heads. Can’t blame them — by the time the next Harrowing comes around, every student here will be decades past graduation. This is their only shot.”

She clapped Jayde’s shoulder again and disappeared into the crowd, already calculating her own odds.

Jayde watched her go.

There was a flicker of something she didn’t expect. Not envy — sharper than that. Interest. A sealed dimension with unknown threats, a year of sustained survival operations, artifact-level rewards, and the kind of pressure that forged the exceptional or killed them.

Entry conditions. Threat variables. Resource management across a twelve-month deployment. Extraction logistics under combat pressure.

She shook it off. A year inside a sealed dimension was a year away from everything she was building. The supply line. The trade framework. The Academy’s strategic position. She couldn’t afford that absence. Not now.

But a second assessment filed itself, quieter than the first: The twenty-five hundred who go in and the sixteen hundred who come out will be the most combat-tested cultivators the Lower Realm produces this generation. Hardened. Experienced. Survivors. When the war comes — and the war IS coming — the Lower Realm is going to need fighters. These are the candidates. Watch who goes in. Track who comes out. Recruit from the survivors.

She filed it alongside the operational intelligence. Moved on.

Kiran materialized beside her, sea-green eyes scanning the notice with the flat assessment of someone who’d spent his life outside traditions that celebrated things like this.

”They sound like they’re excited to die,” he said.

”They sound like they’re excited to prove something.”

”Same thing, sometimes.” Kiran’s mouth twisted. He read the mortality rate. Read it again. ”One in three. And the Academy puts this up like it’s a recruitment poster.”

”It is a recruitment poster. The ones who survive come back with credentials that matter.”

”And the ones who don’t survive? What credentials do they get?”

Jayde looked at him. Kiran’s jaw was tight, his gaze fixed on the notice with something that went deeper than cynicism — the outsider watching an institution ask its best students to walk into a sealed dimension where a third of them wouldn’t come back, and call it an honor.

”A memorial plaque in the east hall,” Jayde said. ”I’ve seen the wall.”

Kiran stared at her. Then he walked away without saying anything else. His hair fell over his pointed ear. The corridor swallowed him.

Eden found her that evening.

Jayde was in the workshop, running calibration tests on the new essence-crystal components from the demon realm shipment. Reiko dozed against the wall, silver-black fur rising and falling with his breath. The bond carried the cub’s steady warmth — undisturbed, content.

”Thirty-five percent,” Eden said, leaning against the doorframe. Blue eyes sharp. The look of a doctor who’d just read a mortality statistic and immediately started planning the intervention. ”I’ve been through the Academy’s medical records from the last Harrowing. The returnees — the ones who came back injured — received minimal post-trial medical care. Basic wound treatment. Essence stabilization. Nothing systematic.”

”And you’re already planning the systematic version.”

”Someone has to.” Eden crossed her arms. ”If thirty-five percent don’t return, how many of the sixty-five percent who do come back are injured? Forty percent? Fifty? The Academy doesn’t track it. The records stop at ’survived’ and ’didn’t survive.’ Nobody documented the medical outcomes of the survivors. Nobody tracked long-term complications. Nobody built a triage protocol for mass casualties arriving through a single portal in an unpredictable timeframe.”

She said it the way she said everything medical — with the controlled precision of someone who found the absence of data personally offensive.

”The portal closes on a fixed schedule,” Eden continued. ”Which means the survivors come through in a window, not a trickle. That’s a mass casualty event by definition. We need triage staging. We need treatment teams assigned by severity tier. Green agrees — she’s already pulled her senior healers into planning.”

”Draft a full proposal,” Jayde said. ”Medical support structure for Harrowing returnees. Triage protocols, treatment teams, post-trial monitoring. Green’s backing will carry it through the faculty. Qin will approve if the logistics are sound.”

Eden nodded. Already thinking. Already building. The doctor who couldn’t look at a system with a thirty-five percent mortality rate without trying to reduce it.

***

The training halls had changed.

Jayde noticed it over the following days. The rhythms were different — sharper, more focused. Students who’d been sparring casually were now sparring with intent. Formation students who’d been exploring theory were now drilling practical applications. The Harrowing announcement had shifted something in the Academy’s collective posture. A deadline. A target. Something real to prepare for.

Heizan’s sessions were where the shift showed most clearly. The Swordmaster sat on his usual wall, bare feet dangling, iron-gray hair tied back with what looked like a strip torn from a training robe, peeling a stone fruit with a small knife. His dark brown eyes — almost black, the only part of him that didn’t look like a caretaker dozing in the sun — tracked the students below.

They were training harder. Jayde could hear it in the sound. The crack of practice blades was sharper. The grunts were more controlled. The pauses between exchanges were shorter. Students who’d been sparring to learn were now sparring to survive. The difference was subtle — a half-second faster on the transitions, a quarter-inch tighter on the guards — but it was there, and Heizan saw every fraction of it.

He called corrections less often than usual. That was the tell. When Heizan was teaching, he interrupted constantly — single words, precise adjustments, the economy of a man who’d been refining students’ form for longer than most civilizations existed. When he was watching students prepare for something he couldn’t protect them from, he went quiet. Let them find their own answers. The silence was its own instruction: this is what it feels like when the stakes are real.

Jayde observed Heizan observing. The lethal stillness. But something else too — in the pauses, when his three-fingered left hand went still against his knee. When his gaze lingered on a student’s form a beat longer than necessary. When a student executed a technique well enough to survive what was coming, his jaw tightened by a fraction.

How many students had he trained and then watched walk into the portal? How many didn’t come back?

She didn’t ask. The question sat in the air between the peach juice on his chin and the number on the notice board.

Takara’s voice arrived, quiet. Fifty-year cycle. They send children into a sealed dimension to prove they’re ready. Thirty-five percent of them prove it by dying.

”It’s a Lower Realm institution,” Jayde said. ”They do things differently.”

They do things brutally. A pause. Though I suppose that depends on what the sealed dimension contains. Thirty-five percent mortality for what purpose? If the trial produces something the Academy needs — if the dimension serves a function beyond testing — then the calculus changes.

Jayde filed that too. The Panthera’s tactical mind, turning the same data she was turning. The question underneath the spectacle: what was the Harrowing actually for?

She walked back to her quarters in the warm Scorchwind evening. Supply logistics to review, trade framework responses to evaluate, formation designs to iterate. A proposal from Eden to read. A Swordmaster’s silence to think about later, when there was time.

And somewhere in the training halls, a swordmaster with bare feet and missing fingers was watching his students train harder than they’d ever trained, and counting.
