Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 416: Chapter 411: Eden’s Medical Revolution

Location:Obsidian Academy — Medical Quarter

Date/Time:Early Ashbloom, 9941 AZI

Realm:Lower Realm — Doha

The boy’s arm smelled like rotting sweetgrass.

Eden catalogued the scent before she’d finished pulling back the dressing. Anaerobic infection, possibly a Verdant-corrupted wound site where the healer’s initial treatment had sealed bacteria inside the tissue rather than clearing it. On any Federation station, she’d have ordered a broad-spectrum antibiotic drip, debrided under local anesthesia, and scheduled a follow-up culture in forty-eight hours. Here, she had clean linen, a bowl of boiled yarrow water, and whatever she could coax out of her own Verdant essence without breaking cover.

It was enough. It had to be.

”Hold still.” She kept her voice soft. The boy — fourteen, maybe fifteen, face gray with pain and the particular rigid pride of someone who’d waited too long before asking for help — locked his jaw and looked at the far wall.

The wound ran from elbow to wrist, a ragged gash that some well-meaning instructor had sealed with a basic Inferno cautery. The surface tissue had fused. Underneath, the infection had spread through the fascial planes in exactly the pattern Eden would have predicted if anyone here understood what fascial planes were.

Nobody did.

She drew a thin thread of Verdant essence into her fingertips. Not the broad wash that Academy healers used, the one that bathed the whole limb in regenerative energy and hoped for the best. A targeted application. Precise enough to separate the sealed tissue without damaging the viable muscle underneath, narrow enough to encourage the body’s own lymphatic response rather than overriding it.

The boy hissed through his teeth.

”Almost done.” Eden worked steadily, her hands moving with the economy of someone who’d performed this exact procedure — or its Federation equivalent — hundreds of times. Incision and drainage, debridement of necrotic tissue, targeted antimicrobial application. The Doha version looked different. The underlying logic was identical.

Clean wound. Antiseptic compress. Proper dressing that allowed air circulation — not another seal, not another well-intentioned suffocation of the tissue.

”Change the dressing twice a day,” she said, tying off the last strip of linen. ”Morning and evening. If the skin around it turns dark or the smell comes back, come here immediately. Don’t wait.”

The boy flexed his fingers experimentally. His eyes widened — he hadn’t been able to do that for three days. ”What did you — how did you —”

”Basic wound management.” Eden was already washing her hands in the basin. ”The first healer sealed the infection inside. All I did was let it out and clean up after.”

She didn’t add: because the standard Academy protocol for a contaminated wound is the equivalent of putting a bandage on a gangrenous limb and calling it fixed. She’d learned to stop adding things like that. It helped no one, and it drew attention she couldn’t afford.

The boy left. Another one came in — a girl with chronic headaches that three senior healers had attributed to insufficient meditation. Eden took one look at the way she tilted her head, the slight asymmetry in her pupil dilation, and thought: cervicogenic headache, likely C2-C3 subluxation with secondary muscle spasm in the suboccipital triangle. What she said was: ”Sit here. Let me feel your neck.”

Twenty minutes of careful manipulation later, the girl walked out without a headache for the first time in two months.

This was how Eden spent her mornings now. The Academy’s medical quarter — a long, low-ceilinged room with stone treatment tables and herb racks that hadn’t been reorganized since before she was born in either life — had become her domain by default. Not because anyone had appointed her. Because she was the one who actually fixed things.

***

Green arrived at midmorning, trailing the particular scent of old parchment and the silver-tinged Verdant essence that was her signature. The ash-blonde hair was pinned in its usual severe bun. The emerald eyes — fractured, like looking through shattered glass — swept the room in a single professional assessment and found everything in order.

”Three compression dressings, two essence-burn treatments, and a cervical adjustment,” Eden reported without looking up from the supply inventory she was writing. ”Also, whoever taught Instructor Mahren’s combat class how to apply a tourniquet should be relieved of that responsibility. The last two students who came in with sparring injuries had tourniquets applied over the wound site instead of proximal to it.”

Green’s mouth compressed into a line that might have been disapproval or might have been the frustration of someone who’d spent longer than most careers lasted trying to teach the basics of battlefield triage to people who thought cultivation fixed everything.

”I’ve told them,” Green said. Her voice was soft, musical. The steel underneath surfaced in the precision of her consonants. ”Three times this quarter alone.”

”Then we need a different approach.” Eden pulled a stack of parchment from beneath the treatment table. ”I’ve been writing it down.”

Green took the top sheet. Her brow furrowed. The furrowing deepened as she turned to the second page, then the third.

Eden had spent the previous night translating sixty years of Federation emergency medical training into language that a Lower Realm cultivation student could follow. Step-by-step wound assessment. Illustrated tourniquet placement — she’d drawn the diagrams herself, hands steady by lamplight, the muscle memory of a hundred Federation field manuals guiding the charcoal. Triage categories. Signs of internal bleeding that couldn’t be healed by essence alone. The critical window between injury and treatment, where the right intervention saved a life and the wrong one ended it.

”This is...” Green turned another page. ”Methodical.”

”It’s a protocol.” Eden kept her voice even. Standard operating procedure. SOP. Every Federation medic carried one. Every field station had it pinned to the wall. You didn’t rely on the healer being brilliant — you relied on the protocol being clear enough that competent people could follow it without being brilliant. ”Anyone with basic Verdant training should be able to follow it. The diagrams cover the seven most common training injuries, the three most common essence-burn presentations, and wound management for contaminated lacerations.”

Green set the pages down carefully. Those emerald eyes held Eden’s for a long moment — not the scrutiny of someone trying to figure out where a village orphan had learned military-grade triage. Green knew exactly where she’d learned it. Had known since the night Jayde brought them together in the Pavilion, and Eden had stopped pretending.

”You translated all of this,” Green said. Not a question. A recognition.

Eden nodded. Sixty years of Federation emergency medical training, stripped of every term that didn’t exist on Doha, rebuilt in language a cultivation student could follow. The hardest part hadn’t been the medicine. It had been finding words for concepts this world didn’t have yet.

”The tourniquet diagram needs a notation about duration,” Green said, already turning back to the third page. ”More than one hour without loosening and the limb dies.”

”You’re right.” Eden added it to the revision list. ”And the essence-burn protocol needs a decision tree for severity grading. I was thinking of a four-tier system based on depth of core disruption.”

”Three tiers,” Green corrected. ”Four overcomplicates. The third tier is already ’send for me immediately.’ Anything above that, the patient needs someone who’s been doing this since before their grandparents were born.”

Eden almost smiled. Almost.

This was the thing that made it work. Not the secret — though that mattered, the freedom of being known — but the sheer complementarity of it. Green brought lifetimes of cultivator healing knowledge, the intuitive understanding of how essence moved through living tissue, the thousand small adjustments that came from having repaired more bodies than Eden could count. Eden brought systematic methodology, analytical frameworks, the habit of documenting what worked and why, and the deep structural understanding of anatomy and pathology that no amount of essence sensitivity could replicate.

They argued constantly. Green’s instinct was to feel the patient’s essence flow and let her response emerge from practiced intuition. Eden’s instinct was to assess, categorize, identify the mechanism of injury, and select the appropriate intervention from a mental database of procedures. Green thought Eden over-systematized. Eden thought Green under-documented. They were both right.

And because Green knew what Eden actually was — not a village orphan with clever hands but a Federation doctor with decades of training in sciences this world hadn’t invented — they could argue honestly. No hedging. No softening. No pretending the disagreement was about anything other than two experts with fundamentally different methodologies learning to build something neither could have built alone.

”The boy with the sealed laceration this morning,” Eden said. ”Standard Academy protocol would have been another cautery pass with higher-intensity Inferno. What would you have done?”

”Opened it.” Green didn’t hesitate. ”Any healer with experience would have felt the infection underneath.”

”But the junior who sealed it didn’t.”

”The junior who sealed it has been cultivating for eight years and has never treated a wound that wasn’t on a practice dummy.” Green’s soft voice carried an edge like a surgical blade. ”They learn the technique. They don’t learn to feel what’s under the technique.”

”That’s what the protocol is for,” Eden said quietly. ”So that the ones who can’t feel it yet still catch it.”

Green was silent for a moment. Then she nodded — a single, precise dip of that ash-blonde head.

”Print more copies,” she said. ”I’ll review them with the senior cohort at Hammerday’s session.”

***

The afternoon belonged to the junior healers.

There were six of them, seated on cushions in the training room adjoining the medical quarter. Four women, two men, all Sparkforged or low Flamewrought, all with enough Verdant affinity to be sorted into the healing track and not enough experience to do anything useful with it. They watched Eden with the wary attention of students who’d heard she was exacting and weren’t sure yet whether that was a good thing.

Eden had set up a demonstration on the stone table at the front of the room. A slab of preserved animal tissue — donated from the Academy kitchens, though she suspected the kitchen staff thought she was strange for asking — with three different wound types carefully recreated: a clean laceration, a jagged tear, and a puncture.

”Wound assessment,” she said. ”Before you channel a single thread of essence, what do you do?”

Silence. Then, from the back, a girl with ink-stained fingers: ”Check for bleeding?”

”Good. What kind?”

”...Bad bleeding?”

Eden didn’t sigh. She had trained herself out of sighing at answers like this approximately four months into her time at Millhaven, when a farmer’s wife had described her husband’s compound fracture as ”his leg went funny.”

”Arterial bleeding is bright and pulses with the heartbeat. Venous bleeding is darker and flows steadily. Capillary bleeding is slow and seeping.” She pointed to the clean laceration on the tissue slab. ”This wound is venous. How do I know?”

She worked through it methodically, patiently, in the careful language of someone who’d spent five years translating doctoral-level medical knowledge into words that made sense without the sixty years of education behind them. Wound depth. Tissue involvement. Contamination assessment. The critical difference between a wound that needed essence healing and a wound that needed physical intervention first.

”Essence is not a cure-all,” she said, and watched several faces rearrange themselves. This was the heresy — the thing that no cultivation-trained healer wanted to hear. ”If you pour Verdant essence into a wound with foreign material still inside it, you heal the tissue around the debris. Now you have a perfectly sealed wound with a piece of gravel embedded in the muscle. What happens next?”

”Infection?” the ink-stained girl offered.

”Infection. Abscess formation. Chronic pain. Possible tissue death if the body can’t wall it off.” Eden held up the thin metal probe she’d fashioned from a repurposed acupuncture needle. ”So before you heal — you assess. You clean. You remove anything that shouldn’t be there. Then you channel. In that order. Every time.”

Practice came next — the tissue slabs, the probes, the hands-on repetition that no lecture could replace. Eden stood behind each one. Adjusted hand positions, corrected probe angles, watched their channeling patterns, and flagged the three who were using too broad a dispersal.

”Tighter,” she told a young man whose Verdant application was washing over the wound like a green tide. ”You’re wasting most of that energy on tissue that doesn’t need it. Focus the thread. Right here.” She guided his hand. ”Feel the margin of the wound? That’s your target. Only that.”

His brow furrowed with concentration. The dispersal tightened. The wound margin glowed — faintly, evenly, precisely where it needed to.

”Good.” Eden stepped back. ”Now hold that for thirty seconds without widening.”

She watched him hold it. Watched the concentration on his face, the slight tremor in his wrist, the moment when the thread tried to widen, and he pulled it back.

Not bad. Needs a thousand more repetitions, but the fundamentals are there.

The thought came in Federation assessment cadence — the same mental voice she’d used evaluating medic trainees aboard the Meridian, the same clinical shorthand she’d carried through two lifetimes. And that was fine. In her own head, she was Dr. Shishido Eba, and the medical quarter was her ward, and these students were her trainees, and the weight of that sat in her chest like an anchor that kept her steady when everything else about this world tried to tip her sideways.

***

It happened near the end of the session.

The ink-stained girl — Lian, her name was, and Eden had been watching her closely because she had the best hands in the cohort and the worst confidence — was practicing a three-layer closure on the jagged tear. The technique required channeling essence at three different depths simultaneously, a skill that most junior healers took months to develop.

Lian managed two layers. On the third, her control wavered, and the deepest thread snapped back, disrupting the other two.

”Try again,” Eden said. ”But this time, anchor the deep layer first. Build from the foundation up, not the surface down.”

Lian tried. The deep layer held. The middle layer settled into place. On the surface, her thread wobbled.

”Steady. Don’t chase it. Let the tissue accept the essence — you’re not forcing it, you’re facilitating perfusion.”

The word was out before she caught it.

Lian looked up. ”Facilitating what?”

Eden’s hands were still. Her expression didn’t change — she’d trained that reaction out of herself years ago, the slight freeze that used to accompany a slip, the microexpression that any competent observer would read as she said something she didn’t mean to. Now there was nothing. Just a beat of silence, and then:

”Absorption. Facilitating absorption.” She said it smoothly, as if the first word had been a stumble, a mispronunciation, nothing more. ”Let the tissue absorb the essence at its own rate. Don’t force it.”

Lian nodded, already re-focusing on the wound. The moment passed.

But Eden felt it.

Perfusion. A word that had no equivalent in any Doha language she’d encountered. A concept rooted in fluid dynamics, capillary pressure gradients, and the physics of solute transport across biological membranes — none of which existed as formal disciplines on a world where healers fixed injuries by channeling magic into them and hoping for the body to sort out the rest.

She’d said it aloud. To a student. In a room full of people.

It didn’t matter — Lian hadn’t understood it, none of them had, the word had slid past like a stone skipping across water. But it mattered to Eden. Because the slips were coming more often. Not less. And not because she was getting careless.

Because the walls between her lives were thinning.

Inside the Pavilion, there were no walls. Green knew. Isha knew. White, Yinxin, Reiko, Takara — they all knew. She could say perfusion, systemic inflammatory response, and broad-spectrum antimicrobial, and nobody blinked. Isha would ask a question. Yinxin would tilt her head. Reiko would watch with those silver eyes, head cocked, radiating the uncomplicated curiosity of a cub encountering something new. They asked her for stories about Jayde’s past life, and she told them, and it was the closest thing to home she’d found on this world.

But outside the Pavilion, she was Eden from Millhaven. Village orphan. Clever hands. A healer who’d figured things out on her own.

Five years of that. Five years of measuring every word, filtering every reaction, maintaining the cover identity that fit like armor — tight, restrictive, necessary. And now, after months of spending her mornings in the medical quarter and her nights inside the Pavilion — where hours stretched into days, and she could be known for longer than anyone outside those walls would believe — the armor was wearing thin in the places where it rubbed against the truth. Not cracking. Thinning. The way metal wore smooth with use until you could see light through it.

The cleaning took longer than it needed to. Eden wiped down the tissue slabs. Filed the probes. Organized the supply shelves — linen here, antiseptic compounds there, the jar of rendered dragon grass salve that Green had taught her to prepare in a way that no Federation pharmacopeia had ever documented and that worked better than anything Eden could have synthesized in a lab.

The protocols she’d written sat in a neat stack on the side table. Twenty-three pages. Diagrams. Decision trees. Step-by-step instructions clear enough that a second-year healer could follow them without supervision.

Systems that outlive the practitioner. That was the Federation way. You didn’t build a medical operation around one brilliant doctor. You built it around protocols, training pipelines, documentation, and quality standards that functioned whether the original architect was present or not.

She hadn’t done it consciously, hadn’t sat down and thought I need to build something that survives my absence. The instinct was older than that. Deeper. Eba had spent the last years of her Federation life building exactly this: systems that would keep running after she was gone. Triage protocols for the colony ships. Training manuals for the settlement medics. The genetic database that would let non-specialist doctors identify and treat the most common post-cryo complications.

She’d built it because she’d suspected she was going to die trying to save Commander Centauri.

Now she was building it again. And she didn’t want to think too hard about why.

***

The medical quarter was empty. Late afternoon light slanted through the narrow windows, turning the stone floor the color of old honey. Somewhere outside, students were sparring — she could hear the crack of training staves, the occasional shout, the steady rhythm of bodies learning to fight.

Eden stood at the basin and washed her hands. Slowly. Methodically. The way she’d washed them after every surgery aboard the Meridian, after every field triage on every blasted colony world, after every patient she’d saved and every one she’d lost.

The water in the basin was still enough to catch her reflection.

Blue eyes. Dark brown hair tied back in a practical knot. A face that wasn’t Eba’s face — younger, different bone structure, different jaw, different everything. But the expression was the same. The calm assessment. The clinical precision just behind the gaze. The steady hands that belonged to a surgeon even when the rest of her belonged to a seventeen-year-old village orphan on a world that didn’t have microscopes.

She looked at that reflection for a long time.

Not Eba. Not not Eba. Not the compartmentalized split she’d maintained for five years — the doctor behind the wall, the village girl in front of it. Something else. Something that had been forming so slowly she hadn’t noticed until the walls were already too thin to pretend they were still standing.

She was Eden. A person who remembered being Dr. Shishido Eba the way someone remembered a previous home — completely, vividly, with every detail intact, but from a distance that made it clear she didn’t live there anymore.

She dried her hands on clean linen. Folded it. Set it beside the basin.

The protocols sat on the side table. Twenty-three pages of a system that would keep working whether she was here or not. Tomorrow she’d add the burn treatment addendum. The day after, she’d start on the field triage section — the one that covered what to do when there wasn’t a healer available at all, when all you had was clean water and pressure and the knowledge that doing something systematic was better than doing nothing.

The day after that, she’d teach Lian how to anchor a three-layer closure without Eden standing behind her.

And eventually, if she built it well enough, the system would run without her.

She turned off the lamp. Gathered the protocols under her arm. Walked out into the fading light of early Ashbloom, where the Academy’s stone corridors were cooling toward evening, and the distant sound of training staves had gone quiet.

She was one person with two lifetimes of knowing how to keep people alive. And the work — the careful, patient, unglamorous work of building something that would last — was exactly where she needed to be.
