Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 445: Chapter 440: The Call

Location:Zhū’kethara — Kael’thoren Fortress

Date/Time:2 Frostforge, 9941 AZI

Realm:The Demon Realm, Doha

The page had a particular weight, even folded small, even after all the times he had taken it out and put it back.

Ren felt it now without reaching for it — a habit his fingers had built without consulting him, drifting to the place inside his coat where it lay against his chest beside the jade pendant. Two things over his heart. The pendant was warm — had been warm for a year now, since the day the thread had flared and given him back a name. The page was warm for a different reason: he had been holding it an hour ago, and the warmth of a thing recently held was a foolishness he allowed himself only behind a shut door.

The schedules lay spread across the desk in front of him — the awakening order, the specialist pairs, the long patient sequence of waking a realm one sleeper at a time. He read them carefully, completely, building toward a future he had decided to believe in. Korvath and Aeshara had come back whole. Gorath and Seraveth had come back whole. The work was good. The realm was filling again, slowly, with people who remembered how to do the things the realm had forgotten.

Every name on the list was a small war won. A realm did not fall in a day, and it did not rise in one; it came back as a body comes back from deep injury, cell by cell, function by function, each waking specialist another piece of a civilization remembering itself. He had buried the old craft of this under all his long years of grief and had only lately dug it back out of the ground. The patience it took did not come naturally to the beast. It came naturally to the king, and these days the two of them were, astonishingly, on the same side of the work.

And under the careful reading, the beast lay quiet.

That was the new thing. The strange thing. For ten thousand years the creature that lived in him had been a wound that walked — grief turned to teeth, a low constant insistence that the world owed him something it could never pay back. He had spent those years managing it as a man manages a fire he cannot put out.

Now it lay quiet, because it had something to wait for.

Jayde, it said, in its wordless way, turning the name over like a stone it had found and could not stop touching. Jayde. Jayde. Not a demand. Not the old hunger. Only the name, repeated, since the day he had finally — after a year of flickers and ghosts and a pendant warming where it had been cold for an age — learned what to call her.

She was alive, somewhere in the Lower Realm. She had handwriting, small and even and controlled, the hand of someone taught to write under discipline, and he had memorized every stroke of it on the one page that had reached him. He did not know her face. He did not know what she was, beyond the impossible reading the bond gave him. But he knew her name, and the beast knew her name, and for the first time in an age the two of them wanted the same thing and were willing to wait for it together.

This was what hope looked like, in a man who had forgotten its shape.

He turned a page of the schedule. Below and around him the city he had bled to keep hummed on through the Common Path, and the hum these days carried a brightness it had not held in living memory — the joy of a realm that had learned, days ago, that one of its own was carrying a daughter. The first in eight thousand years. He let it warm him. He let himself, for the length of one evening, simply work, with the beast quiet and the page warm and the future looking like a thing a man could reach.

Then the communicator woke.

***

It made a small sound, a low chime, the resonance of the link finding its partner across the distance between two thrones. He knew the signature before he answered. Only one man reached him on this channel.

He opened it. ”Heiteng.”

”Ren.” Not Da’Ren. Just the name, in that low voice that always sounded as though it came up from the bottom of deep water. Brothers used names. Kings used titles. That Heiteng had reached for the name told him, before another word, that this was not a matter of state.

He set the schedule down.

”Jayde was pushed into the Harrowing.” A pause, the length of a held breath. ”No bracelet. No roster entry.”

The name in another mouth.

The beast’s quiet broke — not into the old fury, not yet, but into something sudden and sharp, its ears pricking in the dark of him, every sense swinging toward the sound of her name said like a wound. Jayde? Not the gentle turning-over of an hour past. Attention. The flat, total attention of a predator that has caught its mate’s scent on a wrong wind.

Ren went still. He felt his own skin brighten a shade, the jade-white of him catching the lamplight, and he made himself breathe before he spoke.

”Who pushed her?”

His voice had dropped a register without his deciding it. The beast wanted more than a question. It wanted a direction, a name, a throat. He held it, and the holding was not difficult yet — this was a king asking for information, not the surge.

”A student. Being dealt with.” Heiteng’s voice stayed level. ”The Headmaster arrested her within the hour. She will not walk free.”

Within the hour meant nothing to the beast, which did not care for arrests or hours or the orderly justice of a school. It wanted teeth in flesh. Ren breathed, and held, and the holding was a familiar weight. He had held worse, for longer, over colder graves.

”What is the Harrowing?” He knew the word for a Lower Realm trial, a thing the schools did to test their young. He did not know its shape.

”A sealed dimension.” Heiteng laid it out plainly, as he laid out terrain before a war council. ”The Academy opens it once in fifty years and sends its strongest students through. A year inside; then the seal lifts and gives back the ones still breathing. They go in wearing bracelets. The bracelet sets them down at a safe point when they enter, and it counts their kills while they are in there. Every kill is merit, and the merit buys artifacts and cultivation resources on the way out. That is the trial. A year of hunting in the dark, and you leave richer, or you do not leave.” A beat. ”She went in without one.”

Ren needed no more than that. She had been thrown into the dark as though losing her would cost the world nothing.

”And the ones who die.”

”A third. Near enough.” Heiteng did not soften it; softening it would have insulted them both. ”For the students. The trained ones, at the peak the school can make of them, a third do not come back.”

The beast heard a third and showed its teeth.

Ren laid one hand flat on the desk, not because the desk needed steadying but because he did, and felt the old discipline come down over the surge like a lid set over a flame. Not yet. Information first. Always information first. It was the rule that had kept him a king instead of a calamity through every year since the grief began, and it held now, barely, with her name still ringing in the dark of him.

***

Then the line was quiet a moment, and when Heiteng spoke again, the weight under the words had shifted. Not lighter. Steadier. The brother who brought the hard news and then stayed to put it in its place.

”Hear me, Ren. This is a Lower Realm trial.” A pause, to let it land. ”Thirty-five percent is for human students. She is not a human student.”

Ren said nothing. He let Heiteng build it, because Heiteng did not waste words, and the words were doing something to the beast.

”I have read fate for eighteen thousand years.” Low. Certain. ”I have read the weaves of thousands of people, and the thin gray threads of those who were always going to die young. Hers are none of those. Hers are the strongest I have ever read — knotted so deep into the weave of the world that the world would have to come apart to lose her. In eighteen thousand years, only one other has ever read so strong.” A pause. ”You.”

The word landed and sat there.

”I tell you as a reader of fate and as your brother both,” Heiteng said. ”This girl does not die in a training ground.”

Ren knew the weight of that. Heiteng did not speak of fate loosely, and he did not speak of certainty at all unless the weave left him no other word for it. In eighteen thousand years his brother had been wrong about a great many things, men and motives and the hour a battle would break, but never about a death-thread. When Heiteng said a life would not end, it did not end.

”And I know what she is,” Heiteng went on, something near respect in it. ”I have seen her fight. Whatever the school built that place to break, it built it to break human children — not her. Set her against the students who went in beside her, and she is not the weakest of them. She is very near the strongest. They simply do not know it yet.”

Heiteng spoke of weaves and of cultivation. Ren had felt something simpler and surer than either. Once, on a night, the thread had flared hotter than it had ever flared, hot enough to wake him from sleep — fire had come down it. Not warmth. Not essence. Fire, old and certain, the kind he had never felt off any cultivator living. He had not understood it then and did not fully understand it now. He carried it the way he carried the page: whatever she was, she was made of something that did not burn easy.

The beast had stopped showing its teeth. It was listening now, as it listened to Ren when Ren was right.

”And there is this.” The last stone, set in place. ”Yinxin holds a soul contract with her. If the girl were in mortal danger, the silver queen would feel it — a blade through her own chest, no way to miss it. And Yinxin is at the estate, with her young and her company, grieving the distance and furious about it — and not screaming. If your girl were dying, Ren, the silver queen would be screaming.”

Ren held to that. Of all the things Heiteng had laid down, it was the one whose edges he could grip. Fate-weaves were Heiteng’s certainty and not his; he believed them because he believed his brother. But a soul contract he understood without needing the weave to explain it. He had felt, long ago, what it was when a tethered soul was torn away, and he knew there was no missing it. If Yinxin held a true contract with the girl, then somewhere in that city a queen sat with her hand on a thread that ran straight to her, and that hand had not closed in alarm. A living instrument, more honest than any reading. Not screaming. He turned the thought over, and it held its weight.

And the beast — the wound that had walked at his side for an age, that had learned every shape of loss and trusted none of the shapes of comfort — settled. Not happily. It paced. It did not like the distance, did not like the wrongness it could feel and could not name. But the logic reached it where reassurance never could: a trial built for human children, blood that had survived worse, the strongest weave Heiteng had read in eighteen thousand years, and a living alarm that had not sounded.

This was not Suzarin. This was not a toddler and a Soulreaper and a loss he could not have prevented and had never forgiven himself for failing to prevent. This was someone grown, with fire in her older than the dragons, in a place built to kill children — and she was no child.

”One year,” Ren said.

”One year. And I will watch every day of it through the silver queen.” Heiteng did not pretend it would be easy. ”Hear me, brother. If she feels the girl in true danger, I will not wait on any seal. I will open the breach with my own claws and carry her out.”

A beat, and the next words came heavier. ”And I would bury a thousand other children to do it. You know what forcing a sealed trial costs — that is the only reason I have not gone already.” Quieter. ”You have not met her. I have. She would sooner spend the year in the dark than be bought with the lives of the weak, and she would never forgive the hand that paid it. So we wait on the queen. If the day comes that we must choose, we choose it then.”

***

The link went quiet. The chime faded. The King’s quarters were as they had been — the schedules, the lamp, the pendant and the page both warm over his heart — and nothing in the room had changed, and everything had.

Ren took the page out.

He unfolded it along creases worn soft and looked at the small controlled hand he had memorized. Jayde. Somewhere on the far side of a seal no one could cross, in a place that killed a third of the children sent into it, alone but for whatever she had carried in with her.

Heiteng’s logic held. He turned it over, and it held at every point — the trial, the blood, the weave, the silver queen who was not screaming. A reasonable man, a king who had lasted as long as he had by being reasonable, would set the worry down and go back to work.

The beast would not set it down.

It was not raging. The fury Heiteng’s words had banked stayed banked. But beneath the reason, below the floor where logic could reach, the beast had found a thing it could not stop worrying, a thing the rational mind had no instrument to measure. The thread. The Zhu’anara thread that ran out from him toward her, that had flared a year ago and warmed the pendant and given him back a future. It was still there. She was alive; the thread proved it. But it had gone thin. Thinner than a year of distance should have drawn it. Thinner than the seal alone could explain. As though something had come between them that had no business being there, drinking the thread down to wire.

Wrong, the beast said, in its wordless way. Not dying. Not gone. Only — wrong. Thin. Wrong. It paced the inside of him, slow and unsettled, worrying a bone it could not name.

He had no answer for it. Every instrument a king possessed — fate-reading, soul contracts, the testimony of a brother who did not lie — said she lives, she endures, she is not the kind that dies in a school. And he believed them. He chose to believe them, because the alternative was a year of standing at a wall he could open only by burying a thousand children behind it. He had stood helpless at a wall once before, ten thousand years ago, and it had nearly ended him. This time the helplessness was a choice, and somehow that was worse.

So he made the decision as he had made every decision that had kept him alive: he prepared for the worst and built toward the best.

It was not a comfort. It was a discipline, and discipline was what he had in the place where other men kept comfort. A king who could do nothing for a year about the one thing he wanted could still do everything about the realm she would one rule beside him. So he would turn a helpless year into a built one.

The schedule was already aggressive. He would make it more so. Not from panic — panic was a luxury he had buried the capacity for long ago — but from a simpler arithmetic. She would come out in a year. When she did, the realm she would eventually step into would be further along: more sleepers woken, more of the lost knowledge recovered, more of the strength he meant, when the time came, to put between her and anything that ever tried to touch her again.

He folded the page and set it on the desk beside the schedules, where he could see it.

The soulblades lay quiet on their rack. The pendant lay warm against his chest — she was alive, and the warmth said so, even if the thread it sang along felt thinner than it had any right to. Beneath the floor of the world the Common Path hummed on, bright with a joy that belonged to days ago, carrying word of a daughter who would be the first in eight thousand years. The king sat down to work. He was good at working through worry. He had ten thousand years of practice.

Below the work, the beast kept pacing, and would not settle, and watched the thin thread, and waited.
