Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 450: Chapter 445: Birthsingers

Location:Zhū’kethara — Zel’kethari / Council Chamber / Crystal Terrace

Date/Time:Mid Frostforge, 9941 AZI

Realm:Demon Realm

The beast was sleeping again.

Not the restless doze that passed for sleep when the creature was merely tired, one eye cracked against the dark, every shift in the Common Path registering as a twitch along the spine. This was deeper. Heavier. The beast curled in the internal space behind Ren’s ribs like something that had spent itself past recovery and was running on whatever dregs its body could scrape from the marrow. It had been sleeping more across the past weeks, and the pattern troubled him in a way he could not name and therefore could not solve.

He noted it. Filed it. Carried on.

The Zel’kethari held its quiet around him as he descended. Layer 6 had been cleared. Layer 5 was open now, the pods arranged in their crystalline rows, each one humming at a frequency Ren felt more in his sternum than his ears. The sleepers inside were older than anything in the upper layers. Sixty thousand years. The Sundering itself had driven them here, or the years just after, when the realm had been breaking and the mountain had been the only thing left that held.

Tharion walked at his left. Kelyra at his right. The Pathsinger and the Thread Reader — the two specialists whose gifts made the awakening possible. Tharion read the Common Path resonance to determine which sleepers were stable enough to wake. Kelyra read the soul-threads to identify truemated pairs that could be reunited.

They had done this together a dozen times now. The process had become something close to routine, and routine was a mercy that Ren accepted without examining too carefully.

”This one.” Tharion stopped at a pod on the western wall. Pale. Small. The sleeper inside was short for a demoness, barely visible through the crystal. ”Stable resonance. Birthsinger signature — strong. Layer 6/7 boundary. She entered relatively recently.” He paused. ”There’s a note.”

The crystal at the pod’s base held a single line, cut into the surface in the old demon tongue, sharp and clean and unambiguous.

Wake me when they need me again.

Ren read it twice. Then he pressed his hand to the pod and pushed his essence into the awakening sequence, and the crystal sang and thinned and fell away.

Selyra opened her eyes.

Green-gold, warm, honey-amber at the edges. They focused on Ren with the speed of someone who had been waiting, not sleeping — as if the fifty-five thousand years between then and now had been an inconvenience she’d tolerated rather than a rest she’d needed. She was tiny, especially for a demoness. Five foot five. Midnight-black hair with gold threading, silver at the temples. Hands that moved before the rest of her did, pressing flat against the stone beneath her, reading warmth and surface and the pulse of the world through her palms.

”How many?” she said. Her voice was rough from disuse, but the tone beneath the roughness was fierce. Not frightened. Not disoriented. Fierce.

Ren understood the question. Not how long have I slept. Not what has happened. How many pregnant demonesses need me.

”One,” he said. ”She’s several months along. The first pure-blood demon pregnancy in ten thousand years.”

Selyra’s Shan’keth caught the light as she sat up. The vine had grown past her collarbones and was approaching mid-torso, fifty-five thousand years of strong growth mapped across her skin. Her hands were already moving, flexing, testing. A Birthsinger’s hands.

”Take me to her,” Selyra said. ”Now.”

***

Vaelith sat in the healer’s chamber with Vorketh at her side, as Vorketh was always at her side, his body positioned between his truemated wife and the door with the unconscious precision of a warrior who had been doing this for eighteen thousand years. His Vor’kesh sat at his throat, uncovered. He’d stopped hiding it weeks ago, after the first of the awakened had walked through the city with their full vines on open display and the world hadn’t ended. But the habit of eighteen thousand years didn’t die in weeks. His fingers found his collar twice while Ren watched, tugging at the fabric that was no longer there, the phantom reflex of a man whose body still expected to be covered where his culture had always told him to cover.

Vaelith’s hands rested on the curve of her belly. The pregnancy was visible now, months along, the first pure demon child growing in a womb that the realm had almost forgotten could carry one. The first demon girl since Suzarin, over ten thousand years ago. The weight of it sat in the room like a second presence — not spoken, not needed to be.

Selyra entered. Stopped. Her green-gold eyes went to the belly first, then to Vaelith’s face, then to the healer’s setup arranged around the chamber: the monitoring crystals, the essence-reading formations, the careful, improvised infrastructure of a woman who had been managing her own pregnancy with knowledge that was thousands of years out of date and determination that made up for everything the knowledge lacked.

Selyra crossed the room without ceremony. Knelt beside Vaelith. Put both hands on the belly, palms flat, fingers spread.

”How far along?”

”Five months,” Vaelith said. ”I’ve been monitoring the primary essence channels myself. The development is—”

”I’ll hear it,” Selyra said. ”Not read it. Hear it.”

She closed her eyes. Drew a breath that seemed to come from somewhere deeper than her lungs. And sang.

The sound was nothing like the word suggested. Not melody. Not a tune a person might hum in a corridor. A single sustained note, low and warm, that left her throat and entered the belly beneath her hands as if the skin were not there. Ren felt it on the Common Path before he heard it with his ears: a vibration that thinned every other sound in the chamber to silence, not by force but by relevance. Nothing else mattered while that note was sounding. Nothing else could.

The note shifted. Rose. Split into harmonics that wove around each other in patterns too precise to be improvised, each one finding a channel in the child beneath Vaelith’s skin and following it. Reading it. The Birthsinger’s hands didn’t move. They didn’t need to. The song was doing what hands could not: tracing the architecture of a life that was five months into building itself, mapping every junction and flow and gate that the fetal essence system had constructed, and wherever the song found a channel that was strong, it strengthened it further, and wherever it found a channel that was absent — undeveloped, unknown, the six secondary systems that no living healer could have known to look for — it laid the foundation.

The glow came. Faint. Green-gold, the color of Selyra’s eyes, the Radiance and Verdant essences channeled through voice instead of hands, pouring into the child through frequencies that belonged to an art the realm had believed was dead. And the child responded. Ren felt it on the Common Path: a tiny pulse, bright and fierce, answering the Birthsinger’s song the way a seedling answers the sun.

Kelyra stood at the edge of the room, her Thread Reader’s eyes wide, silver filaments blazing.

The singing had done something to the threads. Ren could see it in Kelyra’s face — the focused intensity of a specialist watching her own gift amplified by something she hadn’t expected. The Birthsinger’s song was resonating through the soul-threads of everyone in the chamber, tightening them, clarifying them, making connections visible that were normally buried beneath the noise of ordinary life. Selyra was singing for the child. But the song was illuminating everything it touched.

The note faded. The harmonics dissolved. Selyra opened her eyes and exhaled, and the chamber was ordinary again, and Vaelith was sitting with her hands on her belly and tears on her face that she hadn’t noticed falling.

”The child is strong,” Selyra said. Her voice was rough from the song, but the fierceness underneath was undiminished. ”Ancient bloodline. The primary channels are healthy — your monitoring was sound. The secondary systems are undeveloped, but they’re not damaged. I can build them across the remaining months with regular sessions.”

She looked up. Met Vaelith’s eyes with the directness of a woman who had carved wake me when they need me again into her own crystal and hadn’t expected it to take fifty-five thousand years.

”You have been extraordinary. The fact that you maintained this pregnancy with no Birthsinger, no crystal network, no bonding infrastructure — and the child is THIS strong — is a testament to what you are.”

She didn’t say but. The but lived in the silence before her next breath.

”I’m here now. You’re not doing this alone anymore.”

Vaelith didn’t cry. She exhaled. The first full breath Ren had seen her take in months, her shoulders dropping from a height they’d held so long that the holding had become invisible. Beside her, Vorketh’s hand found hers and held it. His expression didn’t change. His grip did.

In the corridor outside the healer’s chamber, Kelyra touched Ren’s arm.

Her silver filaments were still bright. The Birthsinger’s song had amplified everything — every thread in the room laid bare, every connection tightened and clarified, and the Thread Reader was still processing what she’d seen.

”The singing,” Kelyra said. ”It opened the threads. All of them. Not just the child’s — everyone in the room.” She paused. The filaments pulsed. ”Selyra has a match. In the mountain.”

Ren stopped walking.

”Layer 7. A Shieldbearer. Karveth.” Kelyra’s voice was steady, but her eyes were bright with the residue of the song’s clarity. ”They’ve never met. The matching system broke before either was paired. He entered the mountain separately, from a different region, at a different time.”

She paused again. When she spoke, her voice was quieter.

”He’s been sleeping a hundred meters from her for twelve thousand years. And neither of them knew.”

Ren stood in the corridor and let the weight of that settle. Twelve thousand years. A Birthsinger who had watched her specialty die, who had been the last of her kind to enter the mountain, who had carved wake me when they need me again into her own crystal because she’d had nothing left to stay awake for. And her truemate had been there the entire time. Close enough to touch, if the stone between them hadn’t been there. Close enough that Kelyra’s threads could trace the bond in a single glance.

The beast stirred in its sleep. Not waking. Just shifting, rolling onto its other side in the dark space behind Ren’s ribs, and the thread that ran from his chest to somewhere in the Lower Realm pulled taut for a moment and then went slack again. Too thin. Still too thin. The beast that should have snarled at the wrongness of it simply breathed, and the breathing was heavy, and the heaviness was wrong.

He set it aside. He had been setting it aside for weeks.

”Wake him,” Ren said. ”When she’s ready. Not before. Let her finish with Vaelith first. Let her do the work she entered the mountain for. Then tell her.”

Kelyra nodded. Her filaments dimmed as the gift settled.

Ren turned toward the crystal terrace. Behind him, through the closed door, the small bright pulse of Vaelith’s child hummed on the Common Path like a promise the realm was learning to believe again.

***

The crystal terrace overlooked the city from the Zel’kethari’s western face, a broad shelf of natural stone that the mountain’s builders had smoothed and warded against weather. Below, Zhū’kethara spread in its tiers of dark stone and living light, the Common Path humming through its streets like a current through wire.

Zhuvara stood at the terrace’s edge, her truemate Kethvorn beside her.

They had woken hours ago. Layer 5, sixty thousand years of sleep, and the world they’d entered was not the world they’d left. Ren had given them the summary himself, spare and direct, because these were people who had witnessed the Sundering and deserved the truth of what came after without cushioning. The realm had declined. The fertility crisis had deepened until birth itself had become a rarity, and the crystal networks that Zhuvara had helped build across four hundred thousand years of practice had gone silent one by one as the last Crystalsingers entered the mountain.

Zhuvara had listened with her hands in her lap, the calluses from working with raw crystal stone still visible on her palms. Kethvorn had listened beside her, his Runesmith’s fingers laced through hers, his full Vor’kesh sitting at his throat like a living collar — every leaf intact, deep emerald, displayed openly because he had never learned to hide it.

When Ren had finished, Zhuvara had said, ”Then we have work to do.”

Now she stood on the terrace with the city below and the wind in her midnight hair and Kethvorn’s shoulder touching hers, and neither of them had spoken for several minutes. The city hummed below them. The Common Path carried its constant murmur — joy and grief and labor and rest, the sound of a realm that had endured ten thousand years of diminishment and was still, against all evidence, alive.

Then Zhuvara opened her mouth, and sang.

The sound was not music. Not in any way that word could carry it. A resonance. A vibration that began in her chest and moved through her throat and left her mouth as something that the air itself seemed to rearrange around, thickening, condensing, crystallizing at the boundary between sound and substance. The note was sustained. Low. It filled the terrace the way water fills a bowl — not rushing, not splashing, simply rising until it touched every edge.

The crystal formed in the air between her palms.

It grew from a seed-point outward, facets assembling along resonance lines that her voice drew into existence. The structure was precise. Geometric. Each facet catching the light of the city below and refracting it into spectra that shouldn’t have been possible from mineral alone. A Vor’lethani. A fertility crystal. The first one sung into being since before the Sundering.

Below, in the city, demons stopped.

They didn’t know why. The sound was below conscious hearing for most of them, a vibration that bypassed the ears and went straight to the marrow, to the blood, to whatever ancient architecture lived in demon bodies beneath the level of knowing. The Common Path rippled. Ren felt it: a tremor that wasn’t alarm and wasn’t joy but something older than both, something that moved through millions of connections simultaneously and made every one of them go still.

On the terrace, Kethvorn stood at his wife’s shoulder. His hands were raised, palms out, fingers tracing rune-patterns in the air that locked each facet of the crystal as it formed, inscribing stability into the structure so that the resonance held after the voice stopped. The Runesmith and the Crystalsinger. The inscriber and the singer. The pair that had made the realm’s fertility infrastructure possible for four hundred thousand years, and whose absence had starved it.

Zhuvara’s voice rose. The crystal brightened. The facets caught the Common Path itself and began to hum with it, a harmonic that amplified as the crystal aligned with the realm’s living frequency.

In the streets below, a demoness wept. She didn’t know why. Something in the sound had found something in her that she’d forgotten was there, and the forgetting was what the weeping was about.

The song ended. The crystal hung in the air between Zhuvara’s palms, complete, turning slowly, catching the light. She closed her hands around it, and the glow dimmed to a warm pulse.

Zhuvara looked at Ren. Her green-gold eyes were wet.

”The resonance is different,” she said. ”The realm’s frequency has shifted. Sixty thousand years of damage. I’ll need to relearn the harmonics before I can build a network.”

”How long?”

”Weeks. Months. Depends on how much has changed.” She held up the crystal. ”But this one works. The foundation is still there. Under the damage.”

Kethvorn put his hand on her shoulder. She leaned into it, briefly, and straightened.

Ren looked at the crystal. At the city below, where the Common Path was still carrying the echo of the song, and demons were standing in the streets looking up at the mountain without knowing what they were looking for. At the healer’s chamber behind him, where a Birthsinger was teaching a pregnant demoness techniques that the realm had forgotten were possible.

The beast slept. Deeper than it should. The creature had been his companion for thirteen thousand years — the wild half that raged when he was still, that burned when he was cold, that had nearly destroyed him a hundred times and saved him a hundred more. He knew its rhythms the way he knew the Common Path’s rhythms, and this depth of exhaustion was wrong. It wasn’t spending itself on rage or grief. It was spending itself on something Ren couldn’t see, burning reserves he hadn’t known it was drawing on, and when he reached for it in the internal space it didn’t snarl or growl or even shift. It just breathed. Slow and heavy and spent.

The thread pulled thin. The one that ran from his chest to the Lower Realm, to a woman whose name he could not speak and whose face he had never seen and whose fire he had felt once, through the bond, bright and furious and alive. The thread was thinner than the distance or the dimensional barrier explained. Something was pulling at it from the other side, or from between, and the beast that should have been pacing and snarling at the wrongness of it was too tired to care.

Ren filed it. He had been filing things for ten thousand years. The filing did not make them smaller.

Below, in the city, the echo of the Crystalsinger’s song faded into the hum of the Common Path. In the healer’s chamber, Selyra’s hands moved over Vaelith’s belly, steady and sure, and the child’s pulse on the Path was a small bright thread of its own. In the mountain, in the pods that still hummed in their crystalline rows, more sleepers waited.

The work continued.
