Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 407: Chapter 402: The Decree

Location:Zhū’kethara — King’s Wing, Records Chamber, Broadcast Chamber

Date/Time:Early Emberrise, 9941 AZI

Realm:Demon Realm

The grain of the table was old. Ren’s palms rested flat on wood that had been carved before his reign, before the wars that defined it, before the forgetting that had hollowed the realm to its current shape. The table had belonged to a council that no longer existed, in a room small enough to hold a conversation without amplification. Morning light came through narrow windows — pale, angled, the first Emberrise of a new year pressing against stone that hadn’t changed in millennia.

Velshan and Sorathia sat across from him. Nobody else. Ren had asked them to come alone — no Vaelith, no Morvhan, no council. Just two parents who had been asleep for fourteen hundred years and a king who needed to hear something that politicians couldn’t tell him.

”There are approximately five hundred pairs sleeping in the mountain,” Ren said. ”Truemated couples whose bloodlines survived through the mixed-blood exodus. Their descendants are here. In this city. Walking the same streets. The sleepers don’t know.”

Velshan’s molten red eyes held steady. The Vanguard’s attention — no interruption, no reaction until the full scope was understood.

”Waking them is irreversible,” Ren continued. ”It takes the body decades to prepare for long sleep. Once woken, they can’t go back. If I wake five hundred pairs and the realm falls, they face what comes with the rest of us.”

He paused. Looked at them both.

”You were sleepers. You were woken. I need you to tell me whether that was a gift or a cruelty.”

Sorathia and Velshan looked at each other. One of those truemated-couple glances that carried an entire conversation in a heartbeat — twenty-five thousand years compressed into the space between two pairs of eyes. Ren had seen it countless times across his reign, in thousands of bonded pairs, and it never stopped being the thing he understood least and envied most.

Sorathia answered. Not Velshan. Because this was a healer’s question, not a warrior’s.

”Wake them,” she said. Her green-gold eyes were steady. Warm. Absolute. ”Blood is blood. If a parent is sleeping and their child is alive, the parent deserves to know. That’s not complicated. That’s not politics.”

She paused. The fierce warmth in her gaze softened — not to weakness, but to the particular gentleness of a woman remembering what it had felt like to open her eyes and learn that her bloodline had survived the thing she’d been certain would end it.

”It’s parenting,” she said.

Velshan added one thing. His voice was quiet — short sentences, clear intent. ”Do it carefully. One pair at a time. Let them grieve what they’ve lost before you tell them what they’ve gained.”

The Vanguard’s contribution. Not strategy. Pacing. The warrior who knew that a disoriented soldier needed ground beneath his feet before he could be handed a weapon or a gift.

Ren nodded. He’d expected this answer. He’d needed to hear it from someone who’d lived it.

”Thank you,” he said. It was not a thing he said often. It meant more than the word usually carried.

Solvren’s records chamber smelled of ink and preservation oil and the particular dry-dust scent of parchment that had been stored for longer than the person reading it had been alive. Crystal matrices lined the walls, each one a filing system older than most civilizations, each one reflecting the pale light of the styluses scattered across every surface. Organized chaos — the specific kind that meant the scholar knew where everything was and would gut anyone who reorganized it.

Solvren stood at his central table. Four styluses — two in his right hand, one behind each ear. His blue-silver hair had escaped its scholar’s knot on one side, and the ink stains on his fingers had spread to his wrists. He’d been here for days. The azure sharpness of his eyes had dulled to something flatter, and the tapping rhythm that usually animated his hands was gone. His fingers were still.

Morvhan sat at the table’s far end. Faded copper eyes fixed on a scroll spread open before him, copper hair catching the crystal-light. His hands were flat on the table. The way they’d been flat on the table in the war chamber. The tradition-keeper’s default posture when what he was carrying was too heavy for gestures.

”Tell me,” Ren said.

Solvren began. His voice was clinical — the scholar’s precision that masked everything behind it.

”We found fragments,” he said. ”Ceremony phrases. Old poems. Treaty clauses with archaic terms that fell out of common use. Diplomatic correspondence that references roles by title without defining them, because the writers assumed the reader already knew.” He picked up a scroll — carefully, the way he handled everything — and set it down again without unrolling it. ”The naming ceremony was the clearest example, but it wasn’t the only one. There are at least thirty instances across the archives of words that match no known root. We compiled them.”

He paused. The clinical delivery faltered for one breath.

”That’s what we found,” Solvren said. ”Thirty words. That’s the entire surviving written record of a system that once sustained a civilization of tens of billions.”

The silence in the records chamber was different from the silence in the war chamber. Drier. Older. The silence of rooms where information was kept, discovering that the information was incomplete.

”The notation system for the pair combat formations is lost,” Solvren continued, the clinical mask back in place. ”We found a diagram that appears to show positioning for synergized attacks — male and female fighting as a bonded unit. But the key is missing. The symbols don’t correspond to any known system. Whoever drew it assumed the reader could already read it.”

He set down both styluses. The motion was deliberate — Solvren putting down his tools the way a surgeon put down instruments after a procedure that hadn’t gone the way anyone hoped.

”The information was never written down because everyone knew it,” he said. ”And then everyone who knew it was gone.”

Ren looked at Morvhan. The tradition-keeper’s faded copper eyes met his, and there was something in them that Ren had never seen in thirty-eight thousand years of knowing this man — the particular devastation of a keeper who had just learned that the thing he was keeping had already been broken before it reached his hands.

”I have been speaking those words for thirty-eight thousand years,” Morvhan said. His voice was controlled. Measured. The precision was the grief — each word chosen with the care of a man who would not allow his voice to crack because that would be one more thing breaking, and enough things had broken today. ”I never knew they were incomplete.”

Ren held his gaze. Did not offer comfort, because comfort would have been an insult to the scale of what Morvhan was carrying.

”When I return to the mountain,” Ren said, ”I’ll bring the fragments. The spirit remembers what the archives lost. It can define what you can only name.”

Solvren’s azure eyes refocused. The scholar surfacing through the grief — the particular intensity of a man who had just been told his incomplete data had a key, somewhere, and the key was alive. ”The thirty words,” he said. ”If the spirit can match them to definitions—”

”That’s why I’m going back.”

Morvhan’s hands lifted from the table. Settled in his lap. The motion was slow. ”Then the archives are not a dead end,” he said. ”They are a question. Waiting for someone who remembers the answer.”

Ren nodded. ”That’s exactly what they are.”

***

The broadcast chamber was cold.

Not the domestic warmth of the consultation room, not the dry-dust preservation of Solvren’s archives. Cold stone, deep underground, the walls carved smooth by craftsmen whose names were lost. The cracks from Ren’s last broadcast were still visible — healed over by formation repair, but the scars remained in the stone. The room remembered what it had cost him to open the Common Path to every demon in the realm and hold it for forty-three minutes while he told them about laboratories and pocket dimensions and brothers they’d believed dead.

That had been a flood. An ocean poured through a channel built for a river.

This time he would hold the gate.

He stood in the center of the room. Alone. He’d chosen to do this alone — no council, no witnesses. This was between a king and his people. The soulblades hummed at his back.

He reached for the Common Path.

Not the full-open torrent of before. A controlled broad channel — every thread, every demon, but modulated. He held the gate rather than tearing it open. The pressure built behind his eyes immediately. His jaw locked. His hands pressed flat against the stone pillar at the chamber’s center, and he felt his talons extend — involuntary, the body’s response to the weight of millions of minds turning their attention toward a single point.

He breathed through it. Held.

The Path opened. Not a flood — a tide. Controlled. Immense. Every demon in the realm felt their king’s presence in the space behind their thoughts, the way they felt weather change or ground shift. Something was coming. Something that mattered.

Ren told them.

Not everything. Not the mountain, not Zurath, not the tens of thousands who slept beneath the oldest range in the realm. That stayed sealed. What he told them was what they needed to know, delivered not as words but as intent — pure meaning carried on the Common Path, landing in every demon’s awareness with the directness of truth that couldn’t be argued with, only accepted or rejected.

He told them what Kael’thros was believed to be. The final dignity. The warrior’s good death. The choice every Vor’shal male faced when the last leaf trembled — die with honor, or turn devil. Sacred. Unquestioned. The foundation of every unmated male’s relationship with his own mortality.

He told them what it actually was. A soul-resonance ritual. The rarest last resort — only for souls confirmed by specialists now lost to be permanently desynchronized from their mates’ rebirth cycles. The Tree of Souls had judged: worthy souls were recalibrated, reborn in alignment with their mates. Impatient souls were punished with more separation. Sleep had been the normal option. The mountain had been where males went instead of dying. Kael’thros was meant for the handful who had exhausted everything else across multiple lifetimes.

He told them why it couldn’t be performed as intended. The Thread Readers who confirmed a soul’s desynchronization were gone. The Bondseers who verified the reading were gone. Every step that preceded the ritual — every safeguard that ensured only truly exhausted souls performed it — had been lost when the specialists died out. What remained was the death. Stripped of its prerequisites. Stripped of its purpose. Warriors had been performing Kael’thros for longer than anyone alive could remember, without knowing whether their souls qualified for the mercy it was supposed to deliver.

Then the Decree.

Kael’thros was suspended. Effective immediately. No demon was to perform the ritual until the specialists who once guided it could be found or their knowledge recovered. In its place: sleep. The mountain was open. No demon needed to die to find his mate.

He released the intent. Let it settle into the Path the way a stone settled into water — the impact first, then the spreading rings, then the depth.

The reaction was not uniform.

Relief came first. It crashed through the Common Path in a wave that buckled Ren’s knees — not the sound of voices but the weight of emotion, compressed and carried through millions of threads simultaneously. Vor’shal males — the ones standing at one leaf, gray-world, blade already chosen — felt something they hadn’t felt in years. The specific, terrible fragility of hope arriving in a place that had forgotten what it felt like. Some of these males had picked their day. Some had spoken their Kael’vora. Some had the cremation stone already placed. And now their king was telling them to put the blade down. To live. To sleep instead of dying, and to wait.

The relief was tangled with grief — gratitude and loss woven so tightly that Ren couldn’t separate them, and didn’t try. Men learning they had permission to live were also learning that the permission should never have been taken away.

The resistance came second.

Not from the Vor’shal. From the warriors who had already watched brothers die. Who had held hands and spoken farewells and stood in empty rooms after the absence, knowing that somewhere private, a cremation stone had done its work. Who had honored those deaths as the most sacred act a demon could perform. Who had BELIEVED.

The fury poured through the Path like a second wave crashing against the first. Not disloyalty — grief. The specific, annihilating grief of men who had built their entire relationship with death around the certainty that Kael’thros meant something, and who were now being told that their brothers and sons and friends had performed a ritual that judged the soul — and may have found them wanting. Not silence. Something worse than silence. The possibility that every warrior who chose the blade without exhausting the alternative had been judged impatient by a Tree that punished impatience with more separation, more lives, more distance from the mate they died trying to reach.

Ren felt both waves. Held both. The relief and the fury, the gratitude and the grief, crashing against each other in the network that connected every demon soul. He did not try to resolve them. He couldn’t. This was not a thing that resolved in a day, or a year, or perhaps a generation.

A thin line of purple-black blood ran from his left nostril across his lip. He didn’t wipe it. His talons had scored the stone pillar — deep grooves, the marks of a king’s body paying the price for carrying his people’s collective weight. His hands were trembling. His jaw was still locked.

He dimmed the Path. Gradually. Not severing — releasing. The way he’d learned. The tide receding, the gate narrowing, the millions of attending minds returning to their own space. The murmur settling. But different now. The Common Path carried something it hadn’t carried before — not resolution, but acknowledgment. The relief and the resistance, coexisting. The split was real. The realm was processing what it meant that the most sacred act in their culture had been broken for longer than any of them had been alive.

Somewhere in the eastern garrisons, a Vor’shal male was putting down a blade he’d been holding for three days. Somewhere in the western watchtowers, a warrior who had spoken his brother’s Kael’vora last year was staring at a wall and trying to breathe. Ren couldn’t see them. He could feel them — the specific textures of relief and fury, each one individual, each one valid, carrying across the Path like weather across a plain.

He didn’t try to sort them. He held them. That was the work.

Ren sat on the cold stone floor. His back against the pillar. The cracks from today joining the cracks from before — two broadcasts, two truths, the room accumulating the evidence of a king’s cost.

His hand found the jade pendant. The thread of his truemate — alive, distant, somewhere in the Lower Realm, nameless. He had just told millions of males that death was not the answer. That sleep was better than the blade. That the mountain would hold them until the realm found another way.

He believed it. He had to.

The broadcast chamber settled into silence. The wards hummed. The Path murmured — split, aching, alive. Somewhere above him, the first Emberrise light of 9941 was warming stone that had been cold since before the forgetting began.

Ren sat with the blood drying on his lip and the pendant in his hand and the weight of his people’s grief and hope pressing against his consciousness like the tide pressing against the shore.

He didn’t move for a long time.
