Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 423: Chapter 418: Old Man

Location:Zhū’kethara — Gardens / Training Grounds

Date/Time:Mid Blazepeak, 9941 AZI

Realm:Demon Realm

The courtyard smelled of wet stone and the heavy sweetness of night-blooming jasmine that hadn’t been tended in millennia and had decided to tend itself. Zhū’kethara’s gardens were like that — ancient plantings gone wild behind formation-maintained walls, growing into shapes that no gardener had planned. The flowers opened when they chose. The vines climbed where they wanted. The trees had opinions about sunlight that they expressed by growing sideways.

Ren sat on the upper terrace, a stack of trade documents on the stone bench beside him, watching the courtyard below.

Voresh was crossing the garden path toward the training grounds. The scout moved the way he always moved — silent, economical, bronze-tinted skin catching the early light, tarnished copper eyes tracking the perimeter out of a habit so deep it was indistinguishable from breathing. Thirty thousand years of that. The faded tattoos on his forearms — scout marks, earned in campaigns that predated most of the architecture around him — were almost invisible in the morning light.

Lyria was coming from the opposite direction. Through the garden gate, storm-gray eyes still soft with sleep, copper-gold threads in her brown hair catching the sun. The prophetic rune on her forehead was dormant — a faint silver mark, barely visible, the way it usually was when the visions weren’t pressing.

She saw Voresh. He saw her.

”Morning, old man.”

The words carried across the courtyard with the easy warmth of someone who’d stopped being careful around a person and started being comfortable instead. Not the formal distance of the Kaeth’ara’s early stages — the measured words, the careful address, the thirty-thousand-year gap between them handled like something fragile. This was different. This was a girl who’d decided that the gap was furniture, not a wall, and had arranged herself around it accordingly.

Voresh stopped walking.

His copper eyes — distant, cold for as long as Ren had known him — did something Ren had never seen them do. They warmed.

And then Voresh laughed.

The sound stopped the courtyard.

It was a rusty sound. Unused. The laugh of someone who’d forgotten the mechanics and was rediscovering them in real time — the way the chest moved, the way the throat opened, the way the breath came out carrying something that had been locked behind thirty thousand years of frozen emotion. Not loud. Not booming. A quiet, startled thing, like a door opening in a wall you’d assumed was solid.

Across the courtyard, a warrior mending a formation array looked up. Two training partners froze mid-exchange. A woman carrying water jugs stopped and stared. Thirty-thousand-year-old Vor’shal males did not laugh. The Fading Ones were beyond laughter — beyond most things. Voresh had been planning Kael’thros before the King sent him to Thornhaven. The blade had been drawn. The cremation stone chosen. Everyone in Zhū’kethara who knew what Vor’shal meant had been waiting for the morning when Voresh simply wasn’t there anymore.

And now he was standing in a garden laughing because a seventeen-year-old girl had called him ”old man.”

The warrior at the formation array set down his tools. His partner — younger, a mixed-blood who’d arrived in Zhū’kethara eight months ago — looked at him for an explanation. The older warrior shook his head. Not here. Not now. But his eyes were bright, and his hands had gone still on the array, and the explanation would come later in the barracks — whispered, careful, the story of a Fading One who laughed spreading through the city the way all impossible things spread: quietly, persistently, changing the shape of what people believed was possible.

Nobody moved. The courtyard held its breath. Voresh didn’t notice. His eyes were on Lyria, and the coldness that had lived in them since before most of the demons in this city were born was not gone. Not replaced. Thawed. The first crack in permafrost that had been building for millennia.

Lyria grinned at him. The tiny dimple on her left cheek appeared. She walked past, bumped his arm with her shoulder — casual, deliberate, the gesture of someone who touched people she trusted — and continued toward the training grounds.

Voresh watched her go. The laugh had faded, but the warmth in his eyes hadn’t. He stood in the garden path like a man who’d just been handed something he didn’t know how to hold and was afraid of dropping it.

Ren watched all of this from the upper terrace and said nothing.

Her name is Jayde.

The beast stirred. Not the Voresh-warmth — the other warmth. The thread. The name, still settling in the place where it lived.

He laughs in a garden. She builds bridges between worlds. Both of them finding something they’d stopped hoping for. The pattern is the same.

Ren set the thought aside. Not dismissing it. Carrying it. The way he carried everything the beast gave him that was true and inconvenient.

***

The Seeing happened at midmorning.

Lyria was in the training grounds, practicing the breathing exercises that Voresh’s quintet had been teaching her — essence-control techniques adapted for someone whose power was prophetic rather than combative. She was seated cross-legged on the packed earth, eyes closed, hair tied back, the morning light drawing silver from the dormant rune on her forehead.

Voresh stood guard. He always stood guard during Lyria’s practice sessions — not because the training grounds were dangerous, but because he was Voresh, and standing guard was what he did. His eyes scanned the perimeter with the thoroughness of a man who would die before a threat reached his charge and considered this arrangement entirely reasonable.

The rune flared.

Silver light. Brief. Bright enough to cast shadows, then gone — a pulse, not a sustained glow. Lyria’s storm-gray eyes snapped open. The silver was still in them, fading, the afterimage of something seen behind closed lids that hadn’t originated in the physical world.

Voresh was at her side in two steps. Silent. His hand hovered near her shoulder without touching — the Kaeth’ara’s physical restraint, the male who would not touch without invitation, even in concern.

”I’m fine,” Lyria said. Her voice was distant. The voice of someone still half-inside a vision, blinking at the real world like a swimmer surfacing. ”I saw... something.”

”What?”

”Gold threads.” She frowned. Rubbed her eyes. ”In darkness. And leaves. Blooming. Like something growing where nothing should grow.” She looked at her hands as if they might hold the answer. ”It was warm. Whatever it was — it felt like... new. Like the beginning of something.”

Voresh’s copper eyes held hers. Steady. Patient. Waiting for more.

There was no more. Lyria shook her head, the frown deepening. ”I don’t know what it means. It wasn’t a warning — it didn’t feel dangerous. It felt...” She searched for the word. ”Hopeful? Like good news, I couldn’t read.”

”The Seeings don’t always make sense when they arrive,” Voresh said. His voice was low. Measured. He’d spent months learning — long conversations with Vaelith about prophetic episodes, about what prophetesses experienced when the visions came, about the difference between comfort and crowding. He’d sought out Velshan and Sorathia after their awakening, the grandparents of Kethara, the last great prophetess — sat with them for hours, asking what their granddaughter had needed when the Seeings took her, what helped, what made it worse. He’d wanted to understand what Lyria carried. ”Sometimes the meaning comes later.”

Lyria nodded. Rubbed her eyes again. The silver was gone from them now — just storm-gray with the green-gold emerging at the edges, the way her eyes had been changing slowly over the past months. She went back to her breathing exercises. The moment passed.

Ren, watching from the terrace, held it. Gold threads and blooming leaves. Warmth. The beginning of something. He didn’t know what it meant either. But he’d learned, across ten thousand years, that when a prophetess Saw something, the meaning always arrived eventually. Usually at the worst possible time. Usually exactly when you needed it.

He looked down at the trade documents beside him. The endless work of a realm rebuilding itself one decision at a time. The thread in his chest had stirred when Lyria described the gold threads — a resonance he couldn’t explain, the way a tuning fork vibrated when another fork nearby struck the same note. He added it to the weight he carried. Beside the vision. Beside the name that lived against his heartbeat.

***

Late afternoon. The courtyard again.

Ren had come down from the terrace to walk the perimeter — not inspection, not duty. Movement. The kind of walking a man did when the documents were finished and the council wasn’t convening until evening, and the thread in his chest was humming too steadily to sit still with.

He found Voresh at the garden wall, watching the sunset turn the ancient jasmine gold.

They stood together in the silence that thirty thousand years of shared service had earned. Voresh had been Ren’s mentor before he was Ren’s scout. Had taught him blade work when Ren was young enough that the training sword was taller than he was. Had carried him off a battlefield once, bleeding and furious, and said nothing about it afterward except: You’ll learn to duck.

”She called me ’old man,’” Voresh said. Not to Ren. To the jasmine. To the sunset. To the air.

”I heard.”

”She bumped my arm.” A pause. ”With her shoulder.”

”I saw.”

Voresh was quiet for a long time. The tarnished copper eyes were on the horizon, but they weren’t seeing it. They were seeing something internal — the Kaeth’ara’s architecture, the trust strands building one by one in the Vor’kesh vine on his face, the impossible trajectory of a courtship between a thirty-thousand-year-old scout who’d been ready to die and a seventeen-year-old prophetess who called him ”old man” and meant it with everything she had.

”She is not afraid of me,” Voresh said.

”No.”

”Everyone is afraid of me. Even the warriors. Even the twins.” He paused. ”Even you, once.”

”Once,” Ren agreed. ”When I was seven and you threw me into a river to teach me to swim.”

”You learned.”

”I nearly drowned.”

”You learned.” And the corner of Voresh’s mouth turned up. Not a laugh — he’d used his laugh for the morning. But the ghost of one. The aftershock.

They were quiet for a while. The jasmine was opening — night-blooming flowers unfurling their petals in the fading light, releasing a scent that was too sweet and too heavy and exactly right for a garden that had been waiting ten thousand years for someone to stand in it.

”She touches me,” Voresh said. Quieter now. ”My arm. My shoulder. She doesn’t flinch. She doesn’t hesitate.” His bronze-tinted hand opened and closed at his side. ”I have killed more living things than she will ever meet. She knows this. She saw the scout marks and asked what they meant, and I told her, and she said ’that must have been lonely’ — and then she asked me what I wanted for dinner.”

Ren said nothing. There was nothing to say. The Kaeth’ara was not a process you commented on. It was a process you witnessed.

”Thirty thousand years,” Voresh said. ”Thirty thousand years, and a girl who smells like morning air and warm earth calls me ’old man’ and my vine answers.” His voice was very low. ”I was ready, Ren. The blade was drawn. The stone was chosen. And now I am standing in a garden that smells like jasmine, and I cannot remember what the blade felt like in my hand.”

The admission cost him something. Ren could see it in the line of his shoulders, the deliberate stillness of a man who had just said the most vulnerable thing he’d said in thirty thousand years and was waiting to see if the ground held.

On Voresh’s face, barely visible in the fading light, the vine pulsed. The sixth strand — responding to the laugh, to the warmth, to the sound of a girl who called him ”old man” and the quiet admission of a man who had not been called anything tender in thirty thousand years.

The vine glowed. Faintly. The color of new copper — not the tarnished, faded copper of his eyes, but bright. Alive.

Voresh didn’t seem to notice. Or if he did, he didn’t say.

The vine pulsed on Voresh’s face. The thread pulsed in Ren’s chest. Two different frequencies. The same language.

The jasmine opened around them, filling the evening with its heavy sweetness. Two men at a garden wall — one learning to live again, one learning to hope again — standing in a silence that didn’t need to be anything more than what it was.

Ren placed his hand on Voresh’s shoulder. Briefly. Then he turned and walked toward the council chamber, because the realm didn’t stop for jasmine or for the things men carried in their chests.

But the garden stayed warm behind him. And the vine glowed. And somewhere, a bridge was being built from the other side.
