Chapter 444: Chapter 439: The Arrest

The nib touched paper, and Qin made the first letter perfect.

He had not always been this careful. Once, a long way back, his hand had been quick and his temper quicker, and the two together had cost him things he no longer let himself count. The hand was slow now. Every stroke of ink went down exactly where he meant it, because the alternative was to let what he felt get into the writing, and what he felt had no business on an official document.

Student Meiling Lushan. He wrote the name in full, each character spaced as the regulations required. Charge: aggravated assault resulting in the involuntary exposure of two students to a lethal sealed environment. Two counts. He underlined nothing. Underlining was emphasis, and emphasis was feeling, and there would be no feeling on this page.

Three teapots stood at the edge of the desk. Two cold, one going cold. He left all three where they were.

Below the charge sheet lay the document that mattered more, though no one reading it today would understand why. An order under the Academy seal: no student of this institution was to have contact with any personnel of the Temple of Light, in any capacity, until the matter was reviewed. He had already said the words aloud — in the courtyard, in the silence after the portal closed, in front of five hundred people who would all remember them. Spoken words could be argued away later. Ink could not. So he gave the order ink, and watched it dry, and felt the small cold satisfaction of a door closing exactly where he had wanted a door for a very long time.

That was the part that wanted to get into the writing. He did not let it.

He had been positioning for this longer than most of the people in his Academy had been alive. The Temple’s reach went everywhere — into the markets, the courts, the choosing of which children were worth teaching and which were left to rot. Into his Academy, where it had no business being. He had needed a reason the charter could not argue with. A clean one. A public one.

A disgraced Temple girl in counterfeit silk had handed it to him by losing her composure on a ledge and shoving his most useful student into a hole in the world.

Jayde. He let the name sit in his mind, since it could not get onto the page. The girl was a problem he had decided, deliberately, to keep — secrets stacked like cordwood, every one of them a question he had chosen not to ask. People who asked the wrong questions of people like her did not get to keep them, and he wanted to keep her. She was the most interesting thing to walk through his gates in longer than he cared to measure. And as of yesterday she was on the wrong side of a one-year seal, in a place that killed a third of everyone it swallowed, with no preparation and no warning and no bracelet to pull her back.

He set the brush down, squared it against the inkstone, and picked up the nearest pot. The tea was cold. He drank it anyway. Cold tea was a small, correct punishment for a man who had let a useful student walk toward a trap he should have seen forming.

Then he drew a fresh sheet toward him and began the letter the Temple would receive. He kept it courteous. He kept it short. He thanked them, in the dry formal phrasing the charter demanded, for their long interest in the welfare of his students, and he informed them that, regrettably, recent events obliged the Academy to suspend all Temple access to its grounds and its pupils pending a full review of conduct — a review he would chair, on a timeline he would set. Every clause was a wall. Every courtesy was a lock. By the time their scholars finished arguing with it, the precedent would already be a year old, and the habit of keeping them out would have set like mortar.

He had waited a long time to write that letter. He took his time, and made every letter perfect.

Where the portal had been, there was a stone.

That was all. A flat gray slab set into the courtyard floor, the same as it had been for longer than the Academy had stood and would be for longer after. Yesterday it had held a hole in the world, edged in light, wide enough to swallow a whole column of students. Now it held nothing. It was a stone, and Jayde was on the other side of it, and there was no other side anymore that anyone could reach.

Ryo stood at the edge of it with his hands behind his back.

He had been there long enough that the cold had come up through his boots. He did not shift. Noble training ran deep. You did not fidget, you did not pace, you did not let your face do anything the moment had not earned. So his face did nothing. His gray eyes moved over the seam where stone met stone, once and then again, mapping it, and behind the still face his mind was already three problems past grief.

The courier network. That was the one he could hold. Jayde had built it, and Jayde had run it, and Jayde was gone for a year, and the reports would arrive tomorrow as though nothing had happened, because the people sending them did not yet know that anything had. Someone had to receive them. Pay the runners. Hold the routes. Keep the whole quiet machine breathing until she came back to it. Him, then, with Kiran on the records — the shape it had always taken underneath, Ryo the face and Kiran the engine.

He worked the problem because the problem could be worked. The other thing — the girl, the year, the place that killed a third of everyone — could not be worked, so he did not look at it straight on. He looked at the stone, and he counted runners.

Kiran stood beside him and counted nothing.

The half-elf’s jaw was set hard enough to stand the muscle out under the skin. His sea-green eyes were fixed on the slab, and they were measuring nothing, planning nothing. Kiran did not have the noble trick of turning a feeling into a logistics problem and putting it away. He simply stood there, furious, because the only other thing to do was walk away, and walking away felt like leaving her.

Neither of them spoke for a long while. The courtyard emptied around them, the crowd thinning in twos and threes as crowds do once the thing they came for is over. The light shifted toward evening. The cold deepened, and the lamps along the colonnade came up one by one, throwing the stone into a flat, even glow that showed every grain of it and nothing underneath.

At some point Kiran crouched. He laid two fingers against the slab — not reading it, he had no gift for that, just touching the place — and held them there a moment, then took them back and stood again. Ryo watched him do it and said nothing. There was nothing to say that the gesture had not already said.

Ryo broke first.

”The courier reports come in tomorrow.” His voice came level, almost bored — the voice he used when a thing mattered too much to say plainly. ”Someone has to process them.”

It was not about the reports.

Kiran’s jaw worked. Then it eased. He breathed out through his nose and nodded, once, short.

They turned and walked back toward the dormitories, not talking. Behind them the stone sat in the emptying courtyard, holding nothing, and the work Jayde had left behind went on existing whether or not she was there to do it.

The isolation ward made no sound at all. That was the point of it.

Qin stood at the observation slit and looked at the girl through a finger’s width of warded glass. Meiling Lushan sat on the edge of the cot with her hands in her lap. Not pacing. No shouting at the walls, no demand for a hearing, none of the theatre he had half expected from the performer who had spent a year turning every challenge into spectacle. Just sitting. The gold silk she maintained so obsessively was creased down one side from too long in the same position, and a strand of black hair had slipped loose from its arrangement and hung against her cheek, and she had not pushed it back. Her hands lay open and still. A tray sat untouched by the door — water, a heel of bread — and the warded air held it all at the same dead, even cold, the cold of a room built to keep its occupant exactly as found.

She looked, he thought, exactly as young as she was. Far too young to have done what she had done. Old enough to answer for it.

The anger moved in him, slow and cold, and he let it move and did nothing with it. Her hazel eyes lifted once toward the glass — she could not see him through it — and dropped again. No defiance in the look. No calculation. No plan underneath. Only the stunned flatness of someone who had done a thing in a single hot second and was discovering, now, in the quiet, exactly how large it was.

He had what he needed from looking. The shock. The silence. The absence of any handler’s polish. He filed it for the people who would come asking, because they would come — the Temple would want her back, or want her quiet, or want her made into something useful on a banner, and he did not yet know which. It did not change the task. The task was to keep her alive and whole and precisely where she was. A broken girl in his ward was a problem he could manage. A broken girl the Temple could carry off was a weapon he could not.

He did not go in. He turned and left her to the silence, and let the warded glass keep its one small mercy — that she could not see the face of the man deciding what would become of her.

Green came to the stone once the courtyard was empty.

Green had waited for that — for the students to clear, for the witnesses to drift away, for the place to go quiet enough that no one would see the Academy’s mild herbalist crouch at the seam of a sealed portal and read it like a patient. She went down on her heels and held her fingers a hand’s breadth from the slab, not touching, only listening, and let her senses sink into the structure of the seal as she would sink them into a body, hunting the logic of it, the join, the overstressed thread, the single place where it might be persuaded to give.

There was no such place. Her emerald eyes narrowed at the seam anyway, out of habit, looking for the flaw that was not there.

The seal was old. Older than the Academy, older than most of what the Academy stood on, laid down by hands that had known exactly what they were doing and had not wanted the doing undone. It was strong in the quiet way of things that did not need to perform it — no light, no hum, only an absolute and patient refusal. One year. The span was written into the structure itself, not held by a key or a will she could argue with. A year, and then it would open. Not a moment sooner.

Green could not touch it. The truth of that came slowly and then settled: she had spent longer than she let anyone guess learning the architecture of living things and made things both, had unpicked seals their makers swore could not be unpicked — and still, here, with the one thing she would have traded all those years to undo, she could not touch this.

What lay on the other side, she did not know either. Sealed. Dangerous. That was the whole of what anyone had been able to tell her — a place the Academy fed its students into, out of which a third did not come back. What kind of place. What lived in it. Whether her girl had landed somewhere she could survive or somewhere that had already— she stopped the thought. It bought her nothing, and it was not knowledge. Only fear wearing knowledge’s clothes.

White was behind her; she had felt him come without turning.

He was not looking at the stone. There was nothing at the stone for him — he could no more break a seal than she could lift a mountain, and he never spent any part of himself on what he could not move. Steel-gray eyes were already going over the courtyard the way he always read a place before trouble: the entrances, the angles, the high windows, who could see this spot and from where. Jayde held threads in this city that did not stop holding because she was gone, and someone had to keep them from fraying while she was away. So the big scarred man crossed to the first pillar of the colonnade, laid a palm against it as if testing a wall he meant to hold, and looked up at the gallery windows — marking the angles, marking who from yesterday’s crowd had lingered there a beat too long. He would have their faces by morning. Then he moved on. White had always said what he meant with his feet and his hands and almost never with his mouth.

Green watched him go, knowing exactly what he was doing. They had worked side by side long enough to read each other without a word between them, long enough that she did not need to ask, and he did not need to tell.

Green turned back to the stone.

For one moment she let herself stop being the healer reading a chart, and laid her hand flat on the cold slab — palm to stone, the last place her girl had stood before the world closed over her, and left it there. Said nothing. Asked nothing of it. Only touched it.

Then she drew her hand back and rose, and her voice came out level.

”Strong seal. Old. One year exactly.” A breath. ”I can’t touch it.”

At the courtyard’s edge, White had stopped, waiting for her.

Green looked at the stone one last time. A year. Her girl could do a great deal in a year. So could the two of them.

”Come on,” she said, and went to join him. ”There’s work.”
