Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 447: Chapter 442: Thunderclap

Location:Oceanus Domain (Fahmjir’s territory) → Lower Realm (near Obsidian Academy)

Date/Time:Early Frostforge, 9941 AZI

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

Something large was crashing through the undergrowth below. Not fleeing. Charging.

Takara watched from the ridge, amber eyes tracking the fight through a canopy of bioluminescent ferns that shed pale blue light over everything beneath them. From this height, a shelf of sea-worn basalt sixty feet above the forest floor, the Oceanus Domain’s wild territories spread out in an endless tangle of root and stone and moving water, the air thick with salt and ozone and the territorial musk of a hundred predators that had claimed their ground long before any of them were born.

In the Lower Realm, he’d have held the Flicker — the phase-displacement that let a Lightning Panthera shift just past the edge of visible reality, existing at an offset frequency where no physical sense could register them. It cost essence steadily, a low burn that added up across hours, and in the field it was as fundamental to Panthera reconnaissance as breathing. Here, in Fahmjir’s territory, there was no need. He sat in the open and let the lightning in his mane crackle against the salt wind.

Reiko came through the fern line like a black tide.

Bigger than he’d been at the Academy. Lion-sized and then some, the silver-black fur rippling over muscle that hadn’t been there three months ago, and the mercury rune on his flank blazing openly, nothing dimmed. The rune pulsed with each stride, silver fire tracking his heartbeat, and Takara noted that the pulse was steadier than it had been a week ago. Less reactive. The shadowbeast was learning to carry the Beast Lord’s mark without letting it carry him.

The territorial predator he’d cornered, a ridge-stalker native to the Domain, all armored hide and hooked forelimbs and a jaw built for cracking shellstone, turned to meet the charge. It had fifty pounds on Reiko and the advantage of terrain it had hunted for decades.

Reiko hit it low, driving under the hooked forelimbs, and the ridge-stalker went sideways into the undergrowth with a sound like timber snapping. They rolled. Reiko took a rake across the shoulder that would have opened leather, let the momentum carry him clear, and came up already turning for the second pass.

Takara’s assessment ran as it always ran. Clinical. Detached. The vocabulary of a warrior who had evaluated combat performance for five thousand years.

Faster. Less hesitation on the approach. The strike-angle was correct — under the guard, use the opponent’s height against it. But the follow-through was still conscious. He saw the opening, recognized it, decided to take it. Three steps where there should be one. He’s fighting like a person who happens to be a beast. He needs to fight like a beast who happens to think.

Reiko drove the ridge-stalker back a second time. The predator snarled, reassessed, and broke, turning its armored back and crashing into the undergrowth toward deeper territory. Smart enough to know when the cost of holding ground had risen past the ground’s worth.

Reiko let it go. Stood in the clearing with his chest heaving and blood on his flank that wasn’t his, the mercury rune dimming from combat-bright to its resting pulse. The undergrowth was still settling where the ridge-stalker had crashed through it, broken fern stalks weeping pale bioluminescent sap into the soil. Reiko turned his silver eyes up toward the ridge where Takara sat.

”Better,” Takara said. His voice carried easily, the low register of a Panthera in true form, pitched to cut through forest noise and the crash of distant surf. ”Your entry was clean. Your follow-through is still a committee decision.”

Reiko’s ears flattened. Not in anger. In the specific irritation of a young predator who knew the criticism was earned and didn’t want to hear it.

”The Beast Lord didn’t send you here to be comfortable,” Takara continued. ”He sent you here to stop thinking about fighting and start fighting. When the distinction disappears, you’ll be ready to go back to her.”

The silver eyes held his a moment longer. Then Reiko shook himself, scattering blood from his fur, and padded toward the stream at the clearing’s edge to drink.

Takara watched him go. The mission was simple in structure and demanding in execution: Jayde and Fahmjir had both ordered him here. Bring Reiko to Oceanus. Guard him. Let the Beast Lord’s domain do what a household couldn’t — strip the domestication back to the predator underneath and let the predator grow.

Protecting Reiko was protecting Jayde. If anything happened to this shadowbeast, the Commander would break in ways no enemy could achieve. Takara guarded what Jayde loved. That was the assignment.

The assignment didn’t require him to like babysitting.

The data-pulse arrived like a fist to the sternum.

Takara had been descending the ridge, picking a path down the basalt shelves toward the stream where Reiko was drinking, when the Panthera network frequency hit — low, below any hearing a human possessed, a vibration that traveled through bone and settled behind the eyes. Not a standard check-in. Standard check-ins came in measured intervals, formatted, routine. This one was flagged. Priority. The kind of pulse the network sent when an operational parameter had changed in a way that could not wait for the next scheduled cycle.

He stopped. Absorbed it. Let the encoded data unpack as the network had taught him across five thousand years of intelligence work.

Subject Jayde. Pushed into the Harrowing. No bracelet. No roster entry. Status: unmonitored inside a sealed dimension. Duration: one year.

Takara went still.

Not the way a person went still — freezing, caught, the body’s panic response locking the joints. The way a Panthera went still. Every voluntary function ceasing at once. Breathing steady. Heart steady. Eyes open and fixed on nothing. The body’s resources reallocated from movement to processing, a weapons system going cold while the targeting array recalibrates.

The weary exasperation that had lived in his voice for months — the dry commentary, the professional-disgruntled tolerance of kitten cover and wyrmling cake incidents — stripped away. Gone. What was left underneath was older and quieter and did not have a sense of humor.

”Four Panthera on protection detail. And a student walked up and pushed her.”

He said it to the open air. To Reiko, who had lifted his head from the stream, water dripping from his muzzle, silver eyes locked on Takara with the fixed attention of a beast who had just heard his bondmate’s protector speak in a voice he’d never heard before.

The fury was precise. Not hot. Not desperate. Operational. They’d had Canirr on reconnaissance. Suki on stealth. Prota, eight thousand years of close-protection experience, on overwatch. Amaya tracking. Four of Fahmjir’s finest, deployed to ensure that no threat reached the Commander without passing through them first. And a student. A single human student in gold silk had walked through the entire protection perimeter, crossed the distance, and put hands on the principal.

Takara filed the fury. Let it settle where it belonged: in the after-action report he would deliver to Fahmjir, in the operational review that would take the detail apart at the seams and find the gap. Later.

Now: assessment.

The Harrowing was a Lower Realm trial. Fifty-year cycle. Sealed dimension. The population inside was Grade 4 and Grade 5 human students, the mid to high-range of Obsidian Academy’s cultivation pipeline. Thirty-five percent mortality, and that figure was for those students.

Jayde was not those students.

Jayde was an infant goddess carrying phoenix and dragon blood, trained by Kazren for a year in a pocket dimension, forged in the slavepits, refined in the cocoon, and running a lifetime of Federation military command behind a disguise artifact that hid everything she was from everything around her. Her true cultivation made the Academy’s grading system irrelevant. Her tactical mind made the students in there with her look like children playing at war.

”She’s the most dangerous thing in there, and they don’t know it.”

Reiko had come out of the water. He stood at the base of the ridge, silver-black fur bristling, the mercury rune pulsing faster than its resting rhythm. Not at Takara’s words. At something deeper. The bond.

Takara could see it in the shadowbeast’s weight, the forward lean toward the edge of the Domain, toward the dimensional boundary, as if direction alone could close the distance between him and the woman on the other end of that thread. The mercury rune flared. Dimmed. Flared again.

”She’s alive.” Takara dropped from the last shelf to the forest floor. Landed without sound. Crossed to Reiko in four strides and put himself between the shadowbeast and the Domain’s edge. ”She’s alive. She’s strong. And she’s angry, which means she’s functioning.”

Reiko’s silver eyes held his. The rune pulsed once more, slower. Not calm — held. The way a predator holds rather than stills, the leash internal, the restraint costing everything it cost.

Takara let the silence work. Then, quieter: ”Our job hasn’t changed. Yours is here. Mine is making sure you survive here.”

He turned back toward the ridge. Resumed the descent as if the data-pulse had been a weather report and not the worst operational news of his career.

But underneath the professional mask — something nagged. Not the push. Not the trial. Something in the thread itself.

The bond between Reiko and Jayde ran through them both. Takara couldn’t feel it the way Reiko did, but he could read the shadowbeast well enough to know the thread’s texture by its effect. And the effect was wrong. Reiko’s agitation wasn’t just distance-stress. The thread was thinner than the dimensional separation explained. Thinner than it should have been even with the sealed-dimension barrier between them.

Something else was pulling at it. Something Takara couldn’t identify from the data he had.

He filed it. Didn’t voice it. A professional didn’t speculate without data.

But he filed it carefully.

***

The wind on the ridge carried frost.

Four Panthera stood above the tree line on a granite shelf overlooking the Academy grounds, the sealed portal visible below as a flat gray stone where light had been. All four held the Flicker — phase-shifted, existing at a frequency offset from the visible world, as undetectable to the Academy below as a current running beneath stone. The air tasted of winter and pine resin, and the faint mineral tang of the mountains, and the wind came from the north in steady gusts that flattened the scrub grass and, had anyone been watching, would have appeared to flatten nothing else.

Canirr had received the same data-pulse forty seconds before Takara. He stood at the front of the shelf, pale silver eyes fixed on the sealed portal below, his silver fur pressed flat by the wind. Eleven feet at the shoulder. Electric blue streaks along his flanks crackling faintly in the cold air. Not moving. Processing.

Beside him, Suki had materialized from wherever Suki went when she wasn’t needed — which was everywhere and nowhere, the stealth specialist’s gift for occupying space without registering on any sense that mattered. She was midnight-black, ten feet, her deep purple eyes flecked with gold and fixed on the same gray stone. Her fur rippled once along the shoulder blades — suppressed tension. The only tell she had ever offered in three thousand eight hundred years of service.

Prota stood behind them. Fourteen feet of scarred golden fur and old damage: the missing ear, the three claw marks scoring his face from brow to jaw, the metal-grafted foreleg that clicked faintly when he shifted his weight. His single amber-gold eye was open. The scarred side where the other had been was a knot of old tissue, pale against the gold.

The eye closed.

Not in grief. In recognition. The metal foreleg — grafted after a charge lost, after a failure that lived in the joint as some failures live in the chest — bore his weight without complaint, as it had since the surgery. Prota had been here before. Had stood on a ridge and received word that the person he was sworn to protect had fallen into a place he could not follow.

That charge had not come back.

He opened his eye. Looked at Canirr. Nodded once.

Amaya was the last to arrive and the first to position. She’d been running the southern approach when the pulse hit and had covered the distance to the ridge at a pace that left scorch marks in the frost. Mottled gray-and-silver fur, ten and a half feet, heterochromatic eyes — one silver, one gold — that tracked the sealed portal with the fixed intensity of a master tracker who had identified her quarry and would not blink until it moved.

The golden runic markings on her nose caught the weak winter light.

No one spoke. The Panthera communication frequency hummed below human hearing, a constant low vibration carrying data as a wire carries current — but the data it carried now was silence. Four warriors absorbing the same failure.

Their charge had been pushed. On their watch.

It didn’t matter that they’d been deployed elsewhere. Canirr on the eastern continent, mapping worm nests. Suki running the western corridor. Prota on the northern frontier. Amaya on the southern approach. They’d been where the Commander ordered them, doing the work the Commander assigned. Every one of them exactly where they should have been.

And a student in gold silk had closed the distance anyway.

Canirr’s pale silver eyes moved from the portal to the shelf where the four of them stood. His gaze touched each in turn. Prota. Suki. Amaya. Not a speech. Not a rallying cry. A visual roll call. Who is present. Who is functional. Who can work.

All four. All functional. All able.

The decision was not discussed. It did not need to be. Four warriors who had served together for longer than most civilizations lasted did not require conversation to reach a consensus that was already unanimous.

They could not enter the Hollows. They could not rescue their charge. They could not undo the failure.

They could finish the mission.

Every objective the Commander had assigned before the push — the Lower Realm map, the worm sensors, every nest found, every mile charted — would be complete when she walked out. Not if. When.

Canirr turned east. Suki turned west. Prota turned north. Three directions. Three immortal reconnaissance specialists covering a continent in twelve months while their charge survived inside a stone they couldn’t crack. Space rings loaded with sensors. The Lower Realm would never know they were there.

Amaya did not turn.

+++

The Academy lay below in the early winter light, its dark stone buildings sharp against the frost-pale mountainside. The sealed portal was a flat gray absence among them, not a landmark, not a feature, just a place where something had been and wasn’t anymore.

Amaya settled onto the granite.

She’d chosen the position as she chose every position: a natural crevice in the rock shelf, deep enough to break her outline, angled for a clear sightline down to the portal. For the long holds she’d drop the Flicker and let the terrain do the work — stone and shadow and stillness, the oldest concealment there was. For the observation windows, when she needed to move to a better angle or track activity below, she’d burn the essence and phase-shift. Cycling. Conserving. A year was a long time to hold anything, and Amaya had not survived three thousand seven hundred years by spending what she couldn’t replace.

She lowered her belly to the cold stone the way a tracker settles into a position she intends to hold for a very long time. Her forepaws crossed. Her weight distributed. Her heterochromatic eyes, silver and gold, fixed on the portal with the patience of something that had been built for exactly this.

She wasn’t going anywhere.

A master tracker did not abandon the last known position of the missing. She watched. She waited. If anything changed through that seal — any vibration, any shift, any thread of essence that shouldn’t be there — she would know.

Three Panthera ranging a continent. One watching a stone.

The wind carried frost across the ridge, and Amaya breathed it in, and did not blink.
