Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 437: Chapter 432: The Desk

Location:Temple of Light — High Priestess’s Administrative Chambers

Date/Time:Early Emberwane, 9941 AZI

Realm:Upper Realm

The morning’s first order of business was the SoulBloom processing schedule.

Sharlin reviewed the projections while her tea cooled. The numbers arrived from the Mid Realm facility by encrypted crystal — weekly yields, batch progress, the metrics that the Upper Realm benefactors required before they released the next quarter’s funding. Batch 8-12 through 8-47 were on track. Extraction yields consistent. Wastage within parameters. Thirty-one subjects in the current cycle, transferred from Lower Realm recruitment to Mid Realm processing over the past three months. The youngest was four. The oldest was eleven.

She made a note in the margin. Efficiency gains — 6% improvement since formation array upgrade. Recommend expansion to secondary facility.

The phrase sat neatly beside the transfer manifests. Names, ages, origin villages, and recruitment dates. The manifests were administrative documents — logistical records of resource movement from collection point to processing facility. The pen that annotated them was the same pen that would sign the funding request for next season’s temple repairs, and the hand that held it did not pause between the two tasks.

The children were from the Lower Realm. Born to the discarded — the bloodlines that the Sundering itself had sorted into the wastelands, the human refuse that the divine separation had deemed unworthy of the Middle or Upper reaches. Their essence, unrefined and undirected, was the only thing of value their lineage had ever produced. The SoulBloom extraction gave that essence purpose. Gave it meaning. Elevated it from the base material of wasteland blood into something that served the Temple’s mission — which was, in the end, the only mission that mattered.

Sharlin did not think of this as cruelty. Cruelty required the recognition of equal suffering, and equality was a fiction that the Sundering had disproved. The worthy had risen. The unworthy had fallen. Three realms, three tiers of human worth, arranged by divine mandate. The Upper Realm was proof. The Lower Realm was proof. The children on the transfer manifest were proof — born to nothing, useful only for what could be extracted, their brief lives a footnote in the Temple’s quarterly report.

She closed the SoulBloom file and opened the staffing report.

Three positions at the Mid Realm processing facility required filling — two extraction technicians and a containment specialist. The previous containment specialist had been retired. Sharlin reviewed the retirement documentation with the attention she gave to security matters. The soul-seal had been applied cleanly — the binding that made disclosure physically impossible, the words dying in the throat before they could form. The woman had been reassigned to a Temple outpost in the northern provinces, remote enough that her daily interactions numbered in single digits, comfortable enough that the retirement could be called generous by anyone who didn’t examine what the generosity was designed to contain.

Replacements were never recruited openly. The shortlist had been prepared through six months of graduated exposure — Temple acolytes quietly assessed for temperament, loyalty, and the specific psychological profile that indicated long-term suitability for processing work. Three candidates. Sharlin approved two. Struck the third — the facility director’s notes mentioned hesitation during live demonstrations. Hesitation wasn’t a character flaw. It was a security breach waiting to happen. The struck candidate would receive a different assignment. Skills used, information contained.

The pen moved. The shortlist was filed.

The third order of business was the Academy.

Sharlin set the staffing file aside and opened her desk’s lower drawer. The communication crystal — Temple-grade, encrypted — connected her office to Lanhua’s quarters at the Academy. She activated it.

Lanhua answered on the fourth pulse. Late. The image materialized — brown hair, cream-and-pale-gold robes, the warm expression perfectly in place. But the eyes behind the warmth were tight. The tightness of a subordinate who knew why the call was coming.

”High Priestess.”

”Instructor Lanhua. The Ashford and Eden recruitment. Where do we stand?”

The pause before Lanhua answered was fractional. Sharlin caught it the way she caught everything — as information.

”The situation is developing,” Lanhua said. ”Ashford has proven resistant to standard recruitment approaches. Her social architecture is unusually insular — three close associates, no peripheral connections. She doesn’t attend community events. She doesn’t respond to belonging cues. The support group model hasn’t found purchase because she isn’t isolated. She’s selective.”

”And Eden?”

”Eden follows Ashford’s lead. They operate as a unit. Recruiting one without the other isn’t viable.”

”Which you haven’t done.”

”I’m still working on the approach. The Lushan student has been useful as a pressure mechanism—”

”Lanhua.” Sharlin’s voice lowered. ”I sent you to a Lower Realm school two years ago. A wasteland Academy on a mountain, filled with the descendants of the discarded. These are not Upper Realm families with institutional loyalty and generational wealth. These are nothing children — humans so far removed from the Sundering’s worthy that most of them don’t know what a Temple school looks like. They should be lining up for the belonging your program offers. They should be grateful to be noticed at all.”

She let the silence build.

”Your recruitment figures are forty-three. In two years. At a school of two hundred thousand. Instructor Vereth, working the coastal provinces with a third of your resources, recruited one hundred and twelve. Instructor Daeha, in actively hostile border territories, recruited seventy-eight.”

”The forty-three are high-quality—”

”Forty-three is forty-three. The review board counts heads.” Sharlin picked up her pen — the casual gesture of a woman with other things to do. ”And your two primary targets — the two I specifically requested — are developing.”

”High Priestess, Ashford is not a standard target. Her operational awareness is—”

”Is your problem.” Sharlin set the pen down. ”What concerns me more than your numbers, Lanhua, is the anomaly. A seventeen-year-old Lower Realm girl — born in the wastelands, educated at a provincial school, from a bloodline that the Sundering discarded — has formation knowledge that exceeds anything our own Temple specialists can produce. She invented magitech devices that generated enough revenue through licensing to make the Academy financially independent from the Temple. A wasteland girl. In a single year. Eliminated centuries of institutional dependency with a cooking device and a pen.”

She let that sit.

”Where did she learn it? Who taught a wasteland girl to build formations that our Upper Realm artisans can’t replicate? That knowledge belongs to the worthy, Lanhua. It shouldn’t exist in the Lower Realm. The fact that it does means either someone gave it to her — which raises questions about who and why — or she stole it, which raises questions about from whom and how.”

”And Eden?” Lanhua asked. Carefully.

”The same violation. A village orphan with medical skills that the Academy’s own instructors call unprecedented. Diagnostic precision that takes decades of Temple training to develop, appearing in a girl who claims she learned from a village healer.” Sharlin’s green eyes were steady. ”Two girls. Both Lower Realm. Both carrying knowledge that has no business existing in the wastelands. Both resistant to recruitment. And you’ve had two years to bring them in, and you’re telling me the situation is developing.”

”I can deliver them. I need more time.”

”You’ve had two years.”

”Ashford dismantled our leverage before I could apply it. She eliminated the Academy’s financial dependency on the Temple. The standard pipeline assumes institutional control — students who need us for advancement, for funding. Ashford removed all three. The environment—”

”Lanhua.” Sharlin’s voice was even. The evenness that was worse than anger. ”I don’t compare numbers. The review board compares numbers. The review board is meeting in six weeks. Your name is on the advancement list for High Realm posting. That list crosses my desk before it crosses theirs.”

The crack appeared behind Lanhua’s face. The warm mask holding, but the machinery beneath it yielding.

”I understand, High Priestess.”

”Do you? Your reports describe a woman managing a situation. Managing is what you do when you lack the capability to resolve. Is that the case? Have I overestimated you?”

No comfortable answer. Yes was failure. No was accepting the accusation.

”You have not overestimated me.”

”Then deliver. I want the Ashford girl brought in first. Everything she knows about those formations — the magitech designs, the licensing architecture, every technique she used to build the Academy’s independence — I want it documented. Every source. Every teacher, every text, every scrap of knowledge that a Lower Realm wasteland girl shouldn’t possess. Once we have it, she becomes disposable. Breeding program material at best. But the knowledge comes first.”

”And Eden?”

”Same. Medical knowledge extracted, documented, cataloged. If her skills are genuinely what your reports suggest, the techniques belong in Temple hands, not wasteland ones. The girl herself is...” Sharlin turned her pen between her fingers. ”Secondary. The knowledge is the asset. The girls are the containers. Containers are replaceable.”

She reached for the crystal. ”Your recommendation for High Realm advancement has been on my desk for four months. It will remain there until I see results. If the standard approach isn’t working, find a non-standard one. You have resources. You have a student whose hatred of Ashford you’ve spent months cultivating. Use what you have.”

”Understood, High Priestess.”

The crystal dimmed.

Sharlin sat at her desk. SoulBloom report on the left. Staffing files in the center. Crystal cooling in the drawer. The tea was cold. She drank it anyway.

The fourth order of business was the Upper Realm funding review.

She opened the preliminary draft. The pen moved. Production targets, extraction yields, institutional reach — the quarterly story the Temple told about itself. We are necessary. We are effective. We deliver. The story required data. The data required production. The production required children from the wastelands and operatives in the field and extraction technicians in the Mid Realm facility and the smooth, continuous functioning of an institution that had been sorting the worthy from the unworthy since the Sundering itself had shown them how.

The morning light came through the window and illuminated the portrait on the far wall — the Temple’s founding High Priestess, rendered in oils and gold leaf, serene and certain. Sharlin didn’t look at it. The founding Priestess had believed the Temple’s purpose was to protect. To elevate. To bring the divine light to those who lived in darkness.

Sharlin had kept the light. She’d just redefined who deserved it.

The pen moved. The funding review took shape.

Outside the window, the Temple complex performed its morning cycle. Acolytes in white robes. Morning bells. The sound of a machine that had been running so long it had forgotten that machines could be turned off.

The same pen. The same desk. The same woman.

And in a room at Obsidian Academy, three hundred miles away, a woman with brown hair and cream-and-pale-gold robes sat on the edge of her bed with the crystal’s residual warmth fading from her palm and a fury building behind her face that had nowhere to go except down.

Down was where Meiling lived.
