Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 443: Chapter 438: The Dark

Location:Mid Ring, Vel’thari Containment

Date/Time:1 Frostforge, 9941 AZI

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

The ground was wrong under her hands.

Jayde knew dirt — she had crawled through enough of it, the floor of the pits, the riverbanks of Telia, the practice yards of two lives. This was none of those. The grit between her fingers was too fine, too even, ground down to a powder that held the cold like metal. Mineral, not loam. Nothing had ever rotted here to make it soft.

She kept her hands flat against it and breathed.

That was the work, for the moment. Breathing. The headache had a shape now, which was an improvement — it had started as a white wall behind her eyes and narrowed over the last hour into something with edges, a spike driven from the crown of her skull down through the back of her teeth. Light made it worse, and she kept her eyes half-shut against the dim, letting the rest of the world come in through her skin.

Cold soil. Bark against her shoulder, hard and ridged. The slow drag of her own pulse in her ears, too loud, like her body had turned the gain up on everything to make up for what had been torn loose inside it.

Her shields were gone.

Not weakened. Gone. Green had spent years teaching her to wall the channel — patient, infuriating work, hours of holding a thought steady while Green poked at the seams — and Jayde had laid that wall over the older discipline underneath, the one she’d built across sixty years of keeping her own mind hers when men with credentials had wanted to reach inside it. Both walls. Both down. Isha had gone through them like wet paper because there had been no time to ask, no time to do anything but throw everything he had across the link before the link died, and the only way through had been through.

So now the data sat in her head with nothing to hold it. It arrived in fragments, unsorted, surfacing and sinking — a predator’s gait, a bearing, the smell of water that was safe to drink and water that was not — and each fragment dragged the spike a little deeper.

[Your mental barriers sustained catastrophic breach.]

Kazren. The sword-spirit’s voice in the soul-space, flat as ever.

[The information is intact but unindexed. That is the source of the discomfort. Your mind is attempting to file a library that arrived through a broken window. Channels are overdrawn, not damaged. The distinction matters. Overdrawn channels recover.]

Recover how fast, she did not bother to ask. He would have told her if he knew, and he did not, because no one had ever poured a Solari’s entire working knowledge of a death-zone into a half-blood girl with her defenses already stripped. There was no precedent. Kazren disliked having no precedent. He had gone quiet about it, which from Kazren was a kind of respect.

A shadow crossed the dim above her.

”Commander.”

Jayde opened her eyes the rest of the way.

Eden crouched over her, and the first clean thing the headache let her see was that Eden had already been busy. The blue eyes were steady. The dark hair was pulled back hard off her face, knotted at the nape, out of the way — a working knot, the kind you tied when you did not intend to touch it again for a while. There was mud on Eden’s knees and a smear of it along one forearm. Eden had dragged them both off the open ground and into the treeline herself, while Jayde was still a passenger in her own skull.

”Commander, I need you upright for fifteen minutes,” Eden said. ”Then you rest. Fifteen minutes — tell me what’s in your head while it’s fresh. Then you lie down.”

Jayde pushed up onto one elbow. The treeline tilted, swung, and held, and she let it hold before she answered.

”Terrain.”

”Done a first pass.” Eden didn’t waste the words. ”Dark-bark canopy, close-set. Good cover, bad sightlines — works both ways. Soil’s dead. No insects in it that I can find. That tells you something. Air’s thin — I’ve been here under an hour and I’m already breathing like I climbed something.” She tipped her head toward the deeper dark to the north. ”And there’s a sound. Regular. I’ve been counting it.”

”I heard it.”

”You heard it falling,” Eden said. ”You weren’t counting.”

That was true. Jayde got the rest of the way up, set her back against the tree, and made herself find the sound under the noise of her own pulse.

There. A click. Distant — not close, not closing. A dry, sectioned rattle, like a handful of small stones shaken once and stopped. It came, and then the dark held it, and then it was gone.

The data behind her eyes turned over and offered her something. A gait. A patrol cadence. A classification she had no word for yet because the word had arrived as a shape, not a sound. Better to let it surface than grab at it. Grabbing was what made the spike worse.

The ground pulsed.

Jayde felt it before she heard it. A low, rhythmic shove through the dirt, up her spine where it met the tree. Big. Slow. Too big for any heart she wanted to imagine. It came once. Twice. Then it was gone, swallowed back down into whatever was making it.

Eden had her hand flat on the ground, reading it the same way. ”That’s been doing that since we landed,” she said. ”Slower than the clicking. Different source.” She looked at Jayde. ”You know what it is.”

”No.” Jayde looked at the dark. ”I know I’m not supposed to find out.”

***

The ring was the second thing she did once the fifteen minutes were spent.

The first had been the talking — terrain, the clicking, the pulse, the bearing she could already feel forming out of the wreckage of Isha’s gift. Eden listened, asked three questions, and wrote nothing down, because Eden’s memory had never needed paper. When it was done, she’d said now the ring.

It sat on her finger because Eden had put it there, picked it up off the ground after the fall, when Jayde’s own hands were not yet answering her, and worked it onto her because a ring keyed to Jayde’s essence was dead weight on anyone else. Isha’s work. A gift she had not known was coming, and never meant to be handed over like this.

Jayde opened the ring — not with her hands, but with the part of her it answered to. The seal knew her and gave. To Eden it would be nothing, a plain band on another woman’s hand. So she drew it out, piece by piece.

The medical stores came first, stacked at the mouth of the space where a healer’s hands had left them last. A case of pills, sorted by grade. Then another. Rolls of dark cloth, heavy with surgical instruments. Salves and compounds, antiseptic, bandage, suture, more than there was room to lay out, so she stopped laying it out and named the rest of it aloud while Eden’s eyes moved over what was already on the stone.

”There’s a whole hall of this in here,” Jayde said. ”Every compound she keeps. Hundreds of doses.”

Eden went very still. ”That’s not a field kit. That’s a hospital.”

”It’s Green’s hall.” Jayde’s voice came out level, and she was proud of that. ”Isha packed it. All of it.” Because it had to have been Isha — the others were out in the city, Green and White and Yinxin and the wyrmlings living their lives, none of them inside when the Pavilion went dark. Only the fox had been in there. Alone, in the failing light, emptying a healing hall into a ring against the clock. Jayde did not do the arithmetic of how fast that had to happen. The arithmetic was there. She set it where the data went, in the part of her that filed things instead of feeling them, and reached into the ring again.

There was more.

White’s weapons came out next. Jayde knew the set on sight. Pavilion-forged blades, dark grain in the steel. Throwing knives. A short spear in two lengths, sheathed and ordered as he kept them at home. She’d watched him clean this set a hundred times — six-foot-eight of him, scarred and silent, because his hands said what he never bothered to say.

Then the practical bulk of survival. Rope in coils. A fire kit. Blankets rolled tight. Ration bars in their waxed paper, water in sealed skins — enough of all of it to last two people a long, long time. Two go-bags besides, one each, the Federation habit neither of them had ever broken: packed and stored ready in the Pavilion against a day exactly like this. The fox had sent those through too.

And then the things that made no sense.

A pouch of tea — she knew it before it was clear of the ring, the smell of the blend Green made when one of them couldn’t sleep. A small sealed card, folded paper with a little give to it. And a square of soft leather, warm in her palm when she opened it: Tianxin’s shed scale.

None of it belonged in a survival kit. None of it would keep them alive an hour. And the fox had thrown it in anyway — alone, in the dark, with minutes left, packing a hospital and an arsenal and then stopping, in the middle of that, to be sure these went too.

The card she did not open. Jayde held it a moment — the edge of it, the give of the folded paper. No way to know what it was for. She did not try to find out.

The rational mind had not been in charge.

She set the card on the blanket beside her, face down, and let it be.

”What’s that one?” Eden asked.

”Nothing tactical.”

Eden looked at the card, and at Jayde, and did not push. A long life had taught her when not to push. Instead she sat back on her heels and looked at everything laid across the stone, and started to count out loud, like she’d tally a casualty load, turning the impossible into a manifest.

”Weapons for two, plus spares. Armor for both of us in the go-bags. Medical supplies for, what, fifty patients. A hundred, if I stretch. Shelter. Food for months. Water, and the means to find more. Navigation.” A nod at the heap on the stone, and at the ring still on Jayde’s hand. ”More than a thousand cubic meters of storage, most of it still inside. And two officers.” One corner of Eden’s mouth lifted. Wry. ”More years of war between us than most armies see. Give or take.”

”Give or take,” Jayde said.

”We are not,” Eden said, ”badly equipped.” The humor left her face. ”We are forbidden from using the one thing that would make any of it easy. That’s the problem. Not the gear. The rule.”

Jayde drew the stores back inside, all but what they would keep close, and withdrew her mind from the ring. It sealed.

”Then we solve it like people who never had the thing in the first place,” she said. ”Body. Mind. What’s in the bags.” A tap of her own temple, light, and she regretted it — the spike answered. ”And what’s in here, when it finishes screaming.”

+++

The shelter went up against the inside of a fallen length of wall, a slab of dark stone half-buried in the dead soil, old enough that the edges had gone soft. Eden ran the poles. Jayde fed her the pieces and tried not to be useless about it, and between them they had the low tent staked and skinned in less time than the headache wanted to allow.

When it was done, Eden pointed at it. ”In. That’s medical, not optional.”

Jayde went in.

Inside, she lay on her back on the bedroll, the dark close above her and the cold seeping up through the stone, and for a moment she did the thing she had been not-doing since she hit the ground.

She reached.

It was reflex. Sixty years of command had built the motion into her below the level of thought — when the world went strange, you checked your people, and her people lived in a warm light behind her sternum that had never once, in all the time she’d carried it, gone dark. The motion went out toward the Pavilion the way a hand goes out for a railing in the dark, sure it will be there.

There was nothing.

Not a wall. Not a door shut against her. Nothing — a cold, even, depthless absence where the whole of it had been, where Isha’s nine quiet tails and the wyrmlings’ warmth and the whole gold-lit world inside her had hummed against her every hour of every day. Jayde reached again, and her hand closed on empty air, and the empty air went all the way down.

One moment. She gave it one moment.

Then she let go of the railing that wasn’t there and turned her attention to what was.

Reiko.

The bond ran out from her the other way, thin as wire, stretched across more distance than it had ever held — across the gulf between this place and Oceanus, where she had sent him and where he was becoming what she’d never let him be near her. It did not carry words. It was too thin for words. But it carried him — a low pulse, slow, the rhythm of a thing very large and very alive. Present. Distant. Quiet.

And Yinxin. The other contract, the silver thread, drawn just as thin and just as far: the dragon out in the city with the wyrmlings, on the wrong side of the seal. No words there either. Only the sense of her: alive, straining against the distance, furious at it. Both threads held. Stretched to nothing, but held.

Jayde held onto that. It was enough. Her breathing matched it without her deciding to, and somewhere in the third or fourth slow beat the data behind her eyes stopped fighting her and began, at last, to settle.

She slept.

It was not restful. The library went on filing itself behind her closed eyes, shelving things in the dark — a smell here, a bearing there, the dry sectioned rattle of a gait she still had no name for. But it was sleep, and her body took it as it took everything, without permission and without thanks.

***

She woke to copper.

It came in through her nose before her eyes were open — copper first, the old metallic tang she’d already learned belonged to this whole place, and under it ozone, sharp and electric, and under that something organic and faintly sweet, a smell with no business being pleasant. Pheromone. The word surfaced clean from the settled data, indexed now, filed where she could reach it. The air here carried messages between things that talked in scent, and her nose was reading their mail before her eyes had opened.

The headache had pulled back. Not gone — a pressure now, a held breath behind her eyes, where it had been a spike. More of the data had settled in the night. Enough to start. Enough to fight, if it came to that, which it would.

Outside the tent the dim had not changed. There was no sun here to rise, only a slow gray cycling she’d already started thinking of in shifts. Eden had been up for a while. There was a watch position scratched out at the broken end of the wall, a clear line of sight down the slope, and a stick driven upright into the soil beside it with a single notch cut into the wood.

”Day one,” Eden said, without turning around. ”I’ll cut a notch every dim-cycle. If we lose track of the count, we lose the door. The seal holds a year. I’m not going to be off by a day at the end of it.”

”Good.” Jayde came up beside her and looked down the slope into the dark. ”What’s the clicking doing?”

”That.” Eden tapped the side of her own nose, an old gesture between them, pay attention. ”Clicking every forty-three minutes. Same vector. It’s a patrol. Whatever’s out there walks a circuit, and the circuit takes forty-three minutes, and it hasn’t changed once since I started counting.” Eden finally turned. ”Which means it’s a route, not a hunt. They’re not looking for us. Yet.”

Jayde reached into her own ring — the fifty-cubic-meter band she’d carried since the Nexus, not the fox’s gift — and began to gear up.

It was the oldest motion she had, older than the headache, older than this body. Armor first — the ranger set from her personal stores, spirit-beast leather worked over with reinforcing array, light and silent and made to be lived in. The familiar weight of it settling onto her shoulders did more for her head than any of the pills. Then the crossbow, checked and strung, the draw enhanced past anything her arms alone could manage. The quiver. The enhanced blade at her hip. White’s throwing knives, one to each forearm, taken from the set she’d kept out of the pile, seated where her hands already knew to find them.

Across from her, Eden suited up the same way — leather armor over the wiry frame, the short spear assembled from its two halves, a single throwing knife. Two women dressing for work in the dark, unhurried, every buckle settled, nothing scrounged and nothing forgotten. Not desperate. Outfitted.

Last, Jayde took the essence compass from its case and woke it.

This, she could use. Passive detection. No output. The rule forbade what she put into the air, not what she took from it. The compass held no channel of hers; it only listened. And in the Vel’thari, everything that hunted carried essence as surely as it bled, and the needle drank it in from five kilometers out and pointed.

It twitched.

”Movement,” Jayde said, watching the needle settle, drift, settle. ”Northwest. Maybe four klicks. Edge of range.”

”Forty-three minutes,” Eden said, and reached over to check the angle of the needle against the notch-stick’s shadow. ”Same vector. That’s your patrol.”

”That’s our patrol.” Jayde let the data give her the rest of it — the bearing she’d felt forming since she landed, crystallized now into a clean line through the dark. Two hundred twenty degrees. Three days’ walk, give or take what the terrain did to them. A fixed point in Isha’s gift that the dump had labeled safe in a shape her mind had finally learned to read. A fortress. Old. Built by hands that thought like hers.

”There’s a structure,” she said. ”Bearing two-twenty. Three days, near enough. The data calls it a base. I want walls between us and that clicking before we’ve been here a week.”

Eden looked at the compass, and at the notch-stick, and down the dark slope toward a sound that came every forty-three minutes and had not yet learned their names.

”When do we move?”

Jayde sheathed the blade and felt Tianxin’s scale shift, warm, in the pouch against her hip where she’d put it without quite deciding to.

”We move at first dim-cycle,” she said.

The clicking came again, far off, dry and sectioned and exactly on time. The two of them stood armored in the dark and counted it, and let it go, and waited for the gray to turn.
