Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 249: Chapter 244: The Original Path

Location: Sword Pocket Dimension

Date/Time: Outside time (Months 1-3)

Realm: Lower Realm — Secret Realm (Deep Zone)

”Show me what you know.”

Kazren’s voice carried no inflection. No encouragement. No warmth. The arena stretched around them — vast, silent, ringed with dormant training constructs that watched like an audience of stone. The pocket dimension’s light was even and directionless, the kind of light that cast no shadows, which meant there was nowhere to hide a flinch.

Jayde raised Vael’kir. The runes pulsed faintly.

Combat assessment mode. Standard engagement protocol. Demonstrate full capability in ascending order of complexity.

She began with the Federation.

Clean. Efficient. Muscle memory older than her body — sixty years of killing distilled into forms that wasted nothing. Strike, recover, reposition. Angle of attack calculated for maximum damage with minimum energy expenditure. Footwork that treated the ground as a grid, the enemy as a variable, and the space between them as an equation with one correct answer.

She moved through six standard engagement patterns. Close range, mid range, defensive retreat, offensive press, multi-opponent adaptation, confined space. Each one precise. Each one deadly. Each one designed by people who had studied the mathematics of violence across a thousand battlefields and optimised every wasted centimetre.

She finished. Reset her stance. Looked at the jewel.

Kazren said nothing for a long time.

”You fight,” he said finally, ”like something that was built. Not born.”

She waited.

”Efficient. Soulless. Every movement optimised for killing. There is no art in this. No meaning. No purpose beyond the ending of life.” A pause. ”This is murder with additional steps. Put it away. All of it. I do not wish to see it again.”

(He hates it.)

He is assessing. Do not personalise.

”What else.”

She shifted. Let the Federation drain out of her limbs and reached for something different — what White had beaten into her over months of training on the Pavilion grounds. Doha sword arts. Not the clean mathematics of Federation combat doctrine, but something older and rougher and harder to hold, forms that didn’t always make tactical sense but felt right in ways she couldn’t articulate.

She moved through White’s sequences. The basic cuts he’d drilled until her arms burned. The footwork patterns he’d made her repeat until her legs gave out, and then made her repeat again. The guard transitions that he’d never explained, just demonstrated, over and over, until her body learned what her mind couldn’t grasp.

It wasn’t as clean as the Federation work. It was messier. More alive.

Kazren watched this differently. The dismissive assessment she’d felt through the bond was gone, replaced by something sharper — attention so focused it felt like pressure against her skin. She completed three full sequences before he spoke.

”Stop.”

She stopped.

Silence. The longest yet. Through the bond, she felt him doing something she couldn’t name — reaching past the surface of the forms into something deeper, tracing lines she couldn’t see, following threads she didn’t know existed.

”...I know this form.”

His voice had changed. The crisp disappointment was gone. What replaced it was quieter. Older.

”Or what it used to be. This is a descendant of the Third Wandering Cut — corrupted beyond recognition, but I can see the bones beneath. The way a physician sees the skeleton through the flesh.” A pause. ”Who taught you this?”

”His name is White.”

”How old?”

”I don’t know exactly. Maybe—”

”It does not matter. However old he is, it is not old enough. This form has been passed hand to hand for two hundred thousand years, and every hand lost something. Degraded. Simplified. Forgotten.” Another pause. Not disappointment this time. Grief. ”In the old days, this man would have been a true swordmaster. What he achieved with so much knowledge missing or destroyed... it is impressive.”

She hadn’t expected that. From the way Kazren had dismissed her Federation training, she’d expected worse for White.

”Tell him that, if you see him again. Tell him the bones were correct. The spirit was correct. He simply did not have enough left to work with, and he made more from less than most could manage.”

(White would hate hearing that.)

(White would love hearing that.)

Both. He’d hate the implication that he was working with broken tools. He’d love the recognition from someone who knew what the tools had been.

”Now.” The grief vanished. Kazren’s voice hardened back to steel. ”You have two languages in your body, and both are lying to you. The first is mechanical. The second is incomplete. Neither will serve.”

She felt it through the bond — not words, but intent. A command that bypassed language and settled directly into her muscles.

Let go.

”We start with silence,” Kazren said. ”Empty your body. Every pattern. Every reflex. Every shortcut your muscles have learned. I want nothing. Blank. Zero.”

He is requesting the removal of all trained combat reflexes. This is tactically inadvisable—

”I can hear you thinking,” Kazren said. ”The mechanical voice. Tell it to be quiet.”

(How did he—)

”I am bonded to your soul. Your internal arguments are not as private as you imagine. Now. Stance. Grip. Breathing. The three foundations. Everything begins here.”

He paused.

”I will teach you the Original Path. The way of the sword as it was before the Sundering. Before the silence. Before everything that mattered was lost.”

***

The wind blade caught her across the back of her left hand.

She hissed. Dropped Vael’kir. The blade clattered on stone — an offence, she’d learn later, that Kazren considered roughly equivalent to dropping a baby — and the sting across her knuckles was sharp enough to make her eyes water.

”Federation footwork,” Kazren said. ”You shifted your weight to the heel. I told you: balls of the feet. Intent forward. Always.”

She picked up Vael’kir. Apologised to the sword, which felt absurd but also felt necessary. Reset her stance.

The wind blade hit her right shoulder.

”Federation grip. You are holding the sword at the calculated optimal angle. Stop calculating. Feel where the blade wants to sit.”

Reset. Stance. Grip. Breathing.

Left thigh.

”Your breathing pattern is military. Four-count cycle. A sword breathes with its wielder, not with a metronome. Match the blade. She will show you.”

She. Vael’kir was a she. She filed that away and tried again.

Right forearm.

”Better. Wrong, but better. Again.”

The wind blades came from nowhere. Invisible until the instant before impact — a shift in the air, a compression she could almost feel if she was paying attention and absolutely could not feel if she wasn’t. They weren’t dangerous. Kazren’s control was surgical. But they stung. Really stung. The kind of precise, repetitive pain that wrote lessons directly into the nervous system, bypassing the mind entirely.

By the end of the first day, she was covered in thin red welts and hadn’t completed a single basic cut to his satisfaction.

By the end of the first week, she could feel the wind-shift a half-second before each blade arrived.

By the end of the second week, she was dodging three out of five. Not by thinking. Not by calculating trajectory and intercept angles the way the Federation voice wanted to. By feeling the air change and moving before her mind caught up.

”A swordmaster reads the air,” Kazren said. ”Not with eyes. With everything.”

She didn’t realise until much later that the wind blades were dodge training. That every sting was a lesson in spatial awareness, in reading intent through medium, in the fundamental skill that separated a person holding a sword from a person who was part of a sword. Kazren never told her. He let her figure it out. Which, she suspected, was also the lesson.

***

Weeks passed. Or what felt like weeks — time in the pocket dimension was measured by exhaustion and sleep and the slow accumulation of calluses on her hands.

The eight fundamental cuts consumed everything.

Each one was simple. Deceptively, infuriatingly simple. A downward diagonal. An upward sweep. A horizontal draw. A thrust. Variations on the most basic movements a blade could make, the kind of cuts that a first-day student would learn in any sword school on Doha.

Except they weren’t simple at all.

Each cut channelled essence differently through the blade. The downward diagonal pulled from the Crucible Core through the right shoulder, down the arm, through the wrist, into the steel — and the angle of that channel mattered, the intent behind it mattered, the specific way essence moved through the body’s pathways mattered in ways that White had never taught her because White hadn’t known.

Vael’kir responded to the differences. Runes brightened for certain cuts — the fourth cut, the upward sweep from low guard, made the blade sing with light every time she got the essence channel right. The sixth cut, a reverse horizontal draw, barely flickered no matter what she did.

”The sword has preferences,” Kazren said. ”Learn them. A bonded blade is not a tool. She is a partner. Her preferences are not flaws. They are information.”

Footwork consumed the rest. Not Federation calculation — not the grid-and-variable system that treated ground as mathematics. Not White’s practiced positions — not the memorised stances that put the body where training said it should be.

Something else.

”Feel the ground,” Kazren said. ”Not with your feet. With your intent. Where you want to be... be there.”

She didn’t understand. For weeks, she didn’t understand. She practiced footwork until her legs burned and her ankles ached and the skin of her soles was raw, and she didn’t understand, and Kazren’s wind blades kept catching her, and she still didn’t understand.

Then one morning — or what passed for morning — she was drilling the second cut, and her body needed to be two paces to the left, and she was there. Not stepped. Not moved. There. As if the ground had rearranged itself around her intent.

It lasted one cut. Then it was gone, and she was back to fumbling, and Kazren said nothing about it, which meant it mattered.

***

The golden light came on the forty-third day.

She’d been drilling the eight cuts in sequence — all eight, connected, the way Kazren insisted they be performed eventually, flowing one into the next without pause or reset. She wasn’t ready for it. Her body knew the individual cuts well enough, but the transitions were wrong, the essence channels colliding at the junction points, and on the sixth-to-seventh transition, something tore.

Not muscle. Something deeper. An essence channel in her right arm spasmed, and the pain was white and immediate, and her legs buckled, and she went down hard on the stone floor with Vael’kir still in her hand because she’d learned by now that dropping the sword was worse than any injury.

She lay on her back. Breathing hurt. Her right arm hung useless, the essence channel locked in spasm, and the exhaustion she’d been ignoring for days crashed over her like a wave she’d been outrunning.

Damage assessment. Essence channel disruption, right arm, lateral pathway. Estimated recovery: three to five days with proper—

The light came.

Golden. Warm. Not from the arena’s directionless illumination — from her. From inside her, rising through her skin like dawn through thin curtains, gentle and thorough and impossibly kind. It moved through her body the way water moved through dry earth — finding every crack, every bruise, every torn fibre and strained channel and raw patch of skin. Not just healing. Restoring. The exhaustion dissolved. The hunger she’d been ignoring vanished. The ache in her legs, the rawness in her hands, the deep fatigue that had been building for weeks — all of it, gone, as though the light had reached inside her and found every deficit and filled it.

When it faded, she felt better than she had since entering the tunnel. Better than she’d felt in months. Clean, rested, whole — not just healed but maintained, as if the light had taken care of everything her body needed and given it back in abundance.

She sat up. Flexed her right arm. Perfect. The essence channel flowed smooth and open, as though the spasm had never happened.

Kazren was quiet. She could feel him through the bond — not assessing, not teaching, not correcting. Just... watching. With something that wasn’t quite grief and wasn’t quite recognition, and lived somewhere between the two.

”...He loved you very much.”

The words landed in the silence like stones in still water.

Jayde looked at the sword. The jewel glowed faintly. The runes were dark.

Before she could respond — before the child voice could surface, before the Federation could catalogue, before anything could happen at all — Kazren spoke again.

”Get up. Again.”

First crack. Immediately sealed. She understood. She filed it in the place where she kept the things that mattered too much to examine, and she got up, and she raised the sword, and she began the sequence again.

***

”You have more than you are showing me.”

She froze mid-cut.

They were six weeks in. She’d been channelling Torrent through Vael’kir — her registered affinity, the one on her Academy records, the safe one. The blade responded well enough to it. Clean, controlled, the runes shifting to cool blue-silver with each properly channelled cut.

But the other essences bled through. They always did. Small leaks at the edges of her concentration — a flicker of something that wasn’t Torrent threading through the channel, making the runes shift colour for an instant before she clamped down on it.

Kazren had noticed. Of course, he’d noticed.

”I—”

”You are suppressing secondary affinities during essence channelling. Deliberately. Consistently. For six weeks.” The bond carried his assessment — not angry, not accusatory. Curious. Patient. ”This is not a classroom. There are no registration forms in a pocket dimension. Show me.”

She hesitated. The habit was deep — months of training spent learning to seal everything except Torrent, drilling it until the suppression became second nature. Weeks of presenting herself as nothing more than an Entry Inferno-tempered cultivator with a single affinity. The habit didn’t care that there was no one here to fool. It ran on its own momentum.

”Girl.” Kazren’s voice was dry as old paper. ”I am a sword spirit sealed inside a weapon in a pocket dimension that exists outside of time. Who, precisely, would I tell?”

(He has a point.)

Tactical assessment: zero extraction risk. Zero observation risk. Zero information leak pathways. Compliance is... advisable.

She stopped suppressing.

The essences came through. Not just Torrent. Inferno first — strong, bright, the runes flaring red-gold. And then something else. Something darker. Voidshadow, threading through the channel like smoke through water, the essence she carried from Reiko’s bond. She couldn’t feel him here — the bond was silent, had been silent since she’d entered the tunnel — but his essence was still part of her, woven into her channels, present even when the connection wasn’t.

Three affinities. Not one. Vael’kir responded to all of them, runes cycling between colours — red-gold, blue-silver, deep shadow-black — the sword humming with a resonance that was richer and fuller and more complex than Torrent alone could produce.

Kazren said nothing for a very long time. The bond was opaque — he’d pulled his assessment inward, away from her, processing in whatever way ancient sword spirits processed information they hadn’t expected.

”...Perhaps,” he said finally, ”that old man was not entirely wrong about you.”

It was the same words he’d used when he first assessed her, minutes after her father’s voice had faded. Coming from Kazren, she was learning, repetition was emphasis.

”We will need to adjust the curriculum.”

***

He taught through stories.

Not every technique — the Original Path had hundreds of forms, and most of them were months or years away from her current level. But the philosophy beneath them. The why that modern Doha had lost when it kept the shapes and forgot the meanings.

”There was a woman,” Kazren said one evening, while Jayde sat with Vael’kir across her knees and her muscles aching from the day’s drilling. ”Before the Zartonesh came. A mother from a village so small it did not have a name. She had no training. No cultivation worth mentioning. She had a kitchen blade and two children behind her, and when the first wave came through the valley, she stood in the gap between the rocks, and she held.”

He paused. The bond carried something old and bright.

”The Third Wandering Cut — the form your teacher’s teacher’s teacher learned and passed down and degraded and passed down again — was created by a swordmaster who watched that woman die. He saw what she did with a kitchen blade and no training and two children behind her, and he thought: that. That is what a sword is for. Not art. Not efficiency. Not technique. Purpose. The willingness to stand in a gap and hold.”

Jayde said nothing. The story sat inside her beside the eight fundamental cuts and the wind blade lessons and the forty-three days of stance-grip-breathing, and it changed them. Not the mechanics. The meaning.

”Modern sword arts kept the shape,” Kazren said. ”They lost the story. A form without its story is a word without meaning. You can speak it perfectly and say nothing at all.”

***

By the third month, Vael’kir had opinions.

Not through words — the sword didn’t speak the way Kazren did. But the bond carried feeling. Preferences. Moods. Some mornings, Jayde picked up the blad,e and it hummed warm in her hand, eager, the runes flickering before she’d channelled a single thread of essence. Other days, the sword was heavy. Reluctant. Not hostile — sulking, almost, in the way that a cat sulked when you’d done something it disapproved of and it intended to make you aware of this through the medium of silent, pointed heaviness.

”She is testing you,” Kazren said.

”She?”

”Vael’kir has always been female. Swords are what they are. You do not choose a sword’s nature any more than you choose your own.”

(The sword is a girl.)

Filing.

(I like that.)

Irrelevant.

Eyes-closed training began in week nine. Kazren had her move through the eight cuts with her eyes shut, guided by nothing but the sword’s feedback through the bond. Wrong: silence. The blade went dead in her hand, a length of metal and nothing more. Right: a hum. Warmth. The sense of the sword leaning into the cut, the way a dance partner leaned into a turn. Perfect—

Perfect was song.

The first time she hit it — the third cut, the horizontal draw, on a morning when the air felt right, and her body felt right, and Vael’kir was warm and willing in her hand — the blade sang. Not sound. Resonance. A vibration that moved through the steel and into her bones and into her Crucible Core and filled every channel with something that was not essence exactly but lived in the same place.

She knew that resonance. The metal song from refining class in the Academy — the moment when raw ore responded to the cultivator’s intent and the metal’s nature aligned with the shaper’s purpose. Same principle. Same frequency. The sword was the metal, and she was the shaper, and the eight cuts were the refining process, and the song was what happened when all of it aligned.

”Your father understood what most of Doha has forgotten,” Kazren said. His voice was quiet. ”Everything sings. You just have to be quiet enough to hear it.”

She opened her eyes. The runes along Vael’kir’s blade glowed steady — not cycling, not flickering, just present. Alive. The jewel at the hilt watched her with something that might have been approval if sword spirits dealt in something so pedestrian as approval.

”Continue the sequence, Jayde.”

Neither of them acknowledged it. Kazren’s voice didn’t change. Jayde’s grip didn’t falter. The arena was the same arena it had been for three months, and the light was the same directionless light, and the training construct twenty paces away was the same training construct.

But it was the first time he’d used her name. Not ”girl.” Not ”you.” Jayde.

She continued the sequence. Vael’kir hummed.

***

”Assessment,” Kazren said on the last day of the third month.

She stood in first position. Vael’kir raised. Runes dim, waiting.

”You are no longer terrible.”

She waited for more. More didn’t come. She waited longer. Kazren’s bond radiated the specific patience of someone who had said exactly what they meant and had no intention of elaborating.

”Thank you?”

”It was not a compliment. ’No longer terrible’ is a description of distance travelled. You were terrible. Now you are not. ’Adequate’ is the next milestone. There is distance yet.”

She sheathed Vael’kir. The runes dimmed. The blade settled against her hip with a quiet hum — content, warm, the particular vibration that meant the sword was satisfied with the day’s work even if the sword spirit wasn’t.

(The sword likes me.)

The sword tolerates us.

(Same thing.)
