Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 234: Chapter 229: The Cost of Everything

Location: Obsidian Academy — Base of Mountain → Interior

Date/Time: 18 Ashwhisper, 9938 AZI

Realm: Lower Realm

Registration was held in what the Student Handbook called the Grand Hall and what two hundred thousand nervous applicants called ”the queue.”

The space was enormous. Once, it had clearly been a single vast chamber — the vaulted ceiling soared overhead, carved with symbols that made Jayde’s ward-sense itch with the pressure of layered formations, the stone pillars thick enough to drive a cart through. Now, centuries of administrative pragmatism had subdivided it into sections: Merit Hall, Registration, Discipline, Mission Hall, each separated by wooden partitions that looked deeply temporary against the ancient stone. Clerks sat behind long desks piled with scrolls and registration forms, their expressions carrying the particular endurance of bureaucrats who processed human ambition six thousand forms at a time.

Standing ranking boards flanked the main pillars — tall panels of polished dark stone, currently blank. Waiting. Twenty-one days from now, twenty thousand names would fill them.

Eden walked with Jayde for the first hour, then was directed to a shorter queue marked HEALING ARTS — PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT. She shifted her satchel, glanced back.

”Find you after,” she said. ”Don’t let them register you as livestock.”

”If they try, I’ll let Reiko wake up and correct them himself.”

Eden’s mouth quirked. She hesitated — the brief pause of someone deciding whether to say something and choosing not to — then turned toward the Healing Arts line. Her posture too straight for a village orphan. Her stride too controlled for a seventeen-year-old.

Unusual precision for someone village-trained. File it.

The queue shuffled forward. Three hours. The universal experience of institutional processing — hurry up, wait, fill this form, wait more, fill another form, wait again.

A girl two spots ahead turned around and spotted Takara.

”Oh! Your kitten is adorable.”

On her shoulder, Jayde felt the tiny vibration of Takara’s muscles locking rigid beneath his fur. The instantaneous tension of a creature deciding between endurance and violence and choosing, with great restraint, endurance.

”Thank you,” Jayde said. ”He’s very well-behaved.”

”Can I pet him?”

No, Takara’s entire body communicated, in the universal language of cats who wanted to be literally anywhere else.

”He’s shy,” Jayde said.

The girl reached over and scratched behind Takara’s ear — the one without the ribbon. His eyes went flat. Dead. The thousand-yard stare of someone enduring an indignity so profound that rage had circled all the way around to a stillness indistinguishable from peace. His body, traitor that it was, produced a purr. Small. Involuntary. Devastating.

”He’s purring!” the girl said delightedly.

(He does that.)

***

The registration desk. A middle-aged clerk with ink-stained fingers and the expression of a man who had stopped being impressed by anything approximately three thousand students ago.

”Name.”

”Jayde Ashford.”

”Origin.”

”Southern Reaches.”

”Cultivation tier.”

”Entry Inferno-tempered.”

”Essence affinity.”

”Torrent.”

The clerk’s quill paused. ”Inferno-tempered with a single affinity.” He looked up for the first time. ”That’s uncommon.”

”I had a good teacher,” Jayde said. Which was true in ways no one on this mountain could imagine.

”Mm.” He made a notation. ”Companion beast?”

”Contracted shadowbeast. Currently undergoing essence integration — he’s been unconscious for five days. Already transferred to pet space.”

”Comfort pet?”

Takara sat on her shoulder. The picture of harmless, ribbon-wearing fluff. His blue eyes were half-closed, projecting the serene disinterest of a creature whose greatest ambition was a warm lap and a saucer of milk.

”Kitten,” Jayde said.

”Five merit per month. Registered.” The clerk pulled a smooth black card from a stack and pressed his thumb to its surface. Characters flared — her name, her tier, her affinity — then settled into a faint glow. ”Your Obsidian Slip. Merit tracker, identity, access permissions. Don’t lose it. Replacement takes a month and costs fifty merit.”

He slid it across the desk. Warm to the touch. Lighter than it looked.

Then he produced two smaller items — thin obsidian discs, each no larger than a coin, threaded on simple black cord. ”Beast tags. One for the contracted shadowbeast, one for the comfort pet. Attach them visibly — collar, harness, whatever you use. Any beast on Academy grounds without a tag is classified as wild and dealt with accordingly.”

He pressed his thumb to each disc. The first flared with characters — JAYDE ASHFORD / CONTRACTED SHADOWBEAST / PET SPACE — and dimmed. The second: JAYDE ASHFORD / COMFORT PET / REGISTERED.

Jayde clipped the second tag onto Takara’s collar, next to the small crystal fitted there. He endured this with the rigid stillness of someone adding another indignity to a list that had grown too long to track.

The clerk set a brick-thick book bound in dark leather beside the tags. ”Student Handbook. Read it before the Secret Realm opens. Everything you need to know is in there.”

”Everything?”

”Everything the Academy wants you to know.” He was already looking past her. ”Final step — merit allocation. Place your slip on the desk.”

She placed it.

The clerk touched a formation circle etched into the desk’s surface. The Obsidian Slip pulsed — and numbers appeared on its face in glowing script.

150

She watched the number. Watched it sit there, bright and absolute, the sum total of what the Academy considered her worth as collateral.

Then the clerk touched the formation again.

50

One hundred merits, gone. Transferred to the Secret Realm entry pool. Just like that. A number becoming a smaller number, the difference representing fourteen days of survival against two hundred thousand competitors.

”Next,” the clerk said.

Jayde picked up her slip. Picked up her handbook. Walked away from the desk with fifty merit points and a book that weighed more than her pack.

***

Temporary intake housing was assigned by gender and arrival order.

The dormitory matron — a heavyset woman with forearms like bridge cables and an expression that suggested she’d heard every complaint ever invented and had stopped caring around complaint four hundred — directed Jayde to the women’s wing, second corridor, Room Fourteen.

”Eight bunks. Shared bathing is at the end of the hall. Mess opens at dawn, closes at the ninth bell. Don’t steal. Don’t fight in the rooms — take it to the courtyards. Don’t block the corridor with your beast.” She looked at Takara. ”Comfort pet stays with you. If it makes a mess, you clean it.”

Takara’s expression conveyed deep, personal offense.

Room Fourteen was carved directly into the mountain wall.

Eight bunks in two rows — four against each wall, stacked two high. Thin mattresses. A single window, deep-set into stone two feet thick, showing the city far below and a strip of darkening sky. A shelf per bunk. No wardrobes. No curtains. No privacy. The stone floor radiated that faint, persistent warmth — even here, in the cheapest corner of the Academy, the mountain’s essence was present. Not comforting. Just constant.

Five of the eight bunks were already claimed. Packs on mattresses, cloaks draped over frames, the territorial markings of people establishing space in a shared environment.

A girl with calloused hands and sawdust in her hair sat cross-legged on a bottom bunk, sharpening a knife with the absent focus of someone who’d been doing it since childhood. She looked up when Jayde entered. Assessed. Looked away.

Another was meditating on a top bunk — eyes closed, breathing measured, concentration aggressive enough to feel like a wall.

Two more sat on adjacent bottom bunks, whispering in matching dialect — same village. ”—said it’s three hundred hours if we fail. That’s months, Lian—”

A fifth girl, older than the others, had claimed the bunk nearest the door. She’d arranged her space with military neatness — pack squared, boots aligned, blanket pulled taut. Her eyes tracked Jayde as she entered, catalogued Takara, then returned to the handbook she was reading.

Two empty bunks. One bottom, one top.

Jayde took the top bunk in the far corner. Back to the wall. Sight lines to the door and window. Habit. The mattress was thin enough that the stone shelf beneath it pressed into her spine. The blanket was clean but rough, laundered so many times the weave had gone soft in patches and stiff in others.

Takara claimed half the pillow instantly. A warm, ribbon-wearing weight pressed against her neck, his breathing even, his body projecting the absolute relaxation of a creature with no concerns more pressing than dinner. His ears were angled toward the door. Always toward the door.

The room settled into the uneasy quiet of strangers negotiating shared space — the small sounds of breathing and rustling and the careful, deliberate not-looking that people did when they were too close to people they didn’t know.

Jayde lay on her back and stared at the stone ceiling.

She couldn’t sleep.

She picked up the handbook.

***

It was dense. Hundreds of pages, small print, organised with the ruthless efficiency of an institution that had centuries to refine its documentation. Jayde propped herself on one elbow, angled the book toward the faint golden light from the formation lantern above the door, and started reading.

The first section was history. Obsidian Academy, founded in the early post-Sundering era, was built around a Trial Tower that predated the Academy by — the text said ”considerable antiquity” which was the kind of phrase that meant we don’t actually know how old it is, and we’ve stopped trying to find out. Eight academic halls, each specialising in a different discipline: Medicine, Inscription, Runology, Formation and Array, Beast Taming, Talisman, Refining, and Combat. Students were expected to enrol in at least two halls per term, with course selection available after initial ranking.

She filed the halls away and kept reading. The interesting part wasn’t what they taught. It was what they charged.

The section on merit economy started on page forty-seven and went on for twenty-three pages.

Housing.

The word sat at the top of a table that made Jayde’s stomach tighten.

Normal Class students were housed in shared dormitories — eight-person rooms like this one. Communal bathing, communal meals, and basic cultivation arrays in the training courtyards. Cost: fifty merit per month.

Core Class students were housed in four-person dormitories. Enhanced meal options, improved cultivation formations in shared practice rooms. Cost: one hundred merit per month.

Elite Class students were housed in private courtyards on the upper tier. Individual cultivation arrays, meals included, private bathing. Cost: three hundred merit per month.

She read the numbers again. Then read the next table.

Monthly Stipends.

Normal Class: zero.

Zero.

Nothing. Normal Class students received no stipend at all. They paid fifty merit per month for housing out of whatever they could scrape together.

Core Class: one hundred and fifty merit per month.

Elite Class: three hundred and fifty merit per month.

She stared at the page. The math wasn’t complicated. It was just brutal.

A Normal Class student owed fifty merit per month for the cheapest housing available and received nothing to pay for it. Every merit had to be earned — from labour, from selling materials, from whatever scraps the Academy’s internal economy offered. And that was before courses, before materials, before any of the things that were supposedly the reason for being here.

Core Class was better. One hundred and fifty stipend against one hundred housing left fifty merit per month for everything else — courses, materials, equipment, food beyond the basic communal meals.

Elite was the only class that could actually breathe. Three hundred and fifty stipend against three hundred housing left fifty for everything else. Not comfortable. Not generous. But survivable.

She kept reading.

Earning Merit.

In-house missions were available immediately upon acceptance. Cleaning corridors. Weeding the Academy gardens. Farming the terraced fields on the mountain’s lower slopes. Maintaining the beast pens in the Beast Taming Hall. The rate was consistent across all in-house assignments: one merit per two hours of labour.

One merit. Two hours.

She did the math. Working four hours a day — half a working day, alongside classes and training — a student could earn roughly fifty-six merit per month. Barely enough to cover Normal Class housing. Nothing left over. Nothing for courses, materials, or the debt that sat on every student’s slip like a stone.

That’s subsistence labour. Enough to survive. Not enough to progress. The Academy doesn’t want students earning their way through in-house work. It wants them in the Secret Realm, harvesting resources the Academy needs.

Outside missions paid better. Considerably better. The handbook listed five ranks: White missions worth five to twenty merit, Green missions worth twenty to eighty, Blue worth eighty to two hundred, Red worth two hundred to six hundred, and Black missions that were negotiated individually with Academy elders.

But outside missions were locked.

New students may not accept outside mission contracts until three months after enrollment.

Three months. She read the line twice. Three months of in-house labour at starvation wages before the real earning opportunities opened up. Three months where the only income was scrubbing floors and pulling weeds at one merit per two hours.

They’re forcing new students to sell everything from the Secret Realm to the Academy. If outside missions were available immediately, students would hoard their harvest and sell it to city merchants for gold. The three-month lockout ensures the Academy gets its annual resource haul. Herbs for Medicine Hall. Beast cores for Formation arrays. Materials for Refining. The Secret Realm isn’t just a trial — it’s the Academy’s supply chain.

She turned the page. Course fees.

Practical courses — Medicine, Inscription, Refining, Formation work, anything that required materials and equipment — cost eighty merit per term. Theory courses were minimal. But the materials weren’t included. Spirit ink for Inscription Hall. Array plates for Formation work. Forge time and raw metals for Refining. Beast feed for Beast Taming. Each hall had its own material costs, listed in appendices that Jayde skimmed with growing unease.

She closed the book on her chest. Stared at the ceiling.

Let’s do the full calculation.

She didn’t want to.

Do it anyway.

She had fifty merits. After the Secret Realm — assuming she performed well enough to be accepted — she’d have whatever she earned inside. Whatever jade slips she collected. Whatever herbs and beast materials she harvested and sold.

Say she earned enough to clear the hundred-and-fifty merit enrollment debt and have three months of cushion. Call it four hundred and fifty total — a strong performance, better than most. That would leave her with three hundred merit after clearing the debt.

As a Normal Class student: fifty merit per month for housing. No stipend. Three hundred would last six months if she ate nothing, took no courses, and bought no materials. In reality, with even minimal course fees and supplies? Three months. Maybe four.

As a Core Class student: one hundred for housing, one hundred and fifty stipend. Net cost: fifty per month after stipend, but she’d have access to better resources. Three hundred would last six months — longer, if she could pick up in-house work. Survivable.

As an Elite Class student: three hundred for housing, three hundred and fifty stipend. Net gain of fifty per month. Three hundred starting capital would grow slightly each month. She could take courses, buy materials, and still have a thin buffer. After three months, outside missions would open, and the real income would start.

Elite is the only tier where the math works long-term. Normal is a slow death. Core is survival. Elite is the only class that lets you actually learn.

(But the speech said top ten percent. Two thousand out of two hundred thousand. That means we’d have to—)

Rank in the top one percent of all applicants, yes.

(Without showing what we really are.)

Without showing what we really are.

She lay there with the handbook on her chest and the numbers circling in her head. Two hundred thousand applicants. Twenty thousand accepted. Two thousand Elite. The math was a funnel designed to grind away everything except the exceptional — and the exceptional were expected to pay three hundred merit a month for the privilege of a private room.

Elegant. Ruthless. Designed by someone who understood exactly how to extract maximum value from human desperation.

(We’re about to owe a second debt. On top of the Veil.)

Two debts. Two chains. One to the Pavilion, vast and distant, a number so large it existed more as a concept than a threat. One to the Academy, immediate and concrete, sitting on her Obsidian Slip in glowing script.

She opened the book again. Kept reading.

The Trial Tower section. Annual ranking assessments conducted through Tower performance — combat trials, course trials, cultivation trials. First attempt each year was free. Additional attempts cost one hundred merit. Tower scores determined whether students advanced through the Academy’s five grades, and whether they rose or fell between classes.

The Challenge System. Any student who reached the required Tower floor could formally challenge a student in the tier above — same grade only. Combat in the arena. Winner took the higher spot. Loser dropped one tier. A one-year grace period protected new arrivals from being challenged immediately.

Grade advancement. Five grades, five years maximum per grade. Grade Five allowed ten years. Fail to advance, and you were expelled — debt balance notwithstanding. Total maximum Academy career: thirty years.

She closed the handbook. Set it on the shelf above her bunk.

The room was dark. The formation lantern had dimmed to a low amber glow. Two of her bunkmates were asleep — she could hear their breathing, slow and even. The meditating girl hadn’t moved. The two village friends were whispering again, voices barely audible, running the same calculations Jayde had just run.

”—if we both make Normal, we can split costs—”

”—fifty each, that’s everything, Lian, we won’t have anything left for—”

”—better than the mines—”

Seven girls. Seven pairs of eyes. Seven people who would notice if one of their bunkmates disappeared into thin air in the middle of the night. Seven witnesses to every movement, every absence, every moment she needed to be someone other than Jayde Ashford.

She couldn’t access the Pavilion from here. Not without being seen. Not without someone waking up and watching the girl in the corner bunk vanish and reappear. No way to check on Reiko, to train at night, to commune with Isha in anything but quick, silent bursts through the link.

And the dormitory was the best case. If she ranked Normal — sixty percent of accepted students, the most likely outcome for someone deliberately hiding her capabilities — she’d spend every night in a room like this one. Eight bunks. Shared walls. Shared air. Months of it. Years of it. An entire Academy career spent performing as Jayde Ashford twenty-four hours a day because there was never a moment without an audience.

She needed a private room.

Private rooms were Elite.

Elite was the top one percent.

The economic problem and the privacy problem were the same problem, and the answer to both was the same impossible thing: rank in the top two thousand without revealing what she actually was.

Through the bond with Reiko — muffled, distant, present — the slow pulse of his transformation continued. Still deep. Still turning inward. Five days unconscious now. Whatever he was becoming, it was close. She could feel it in the way the bond had quickened over the past forty-eight hours. Not urgency. Readiness.

(Wake up soon, Reiko. I need you.)

Silence through the bond. Not absence — presence, but far away. Like hearing someone breathe in the next room.

Through the deep-set window, the Trial Tower’s golden windows burned against the night sky. Somewhere above — past the middle tier, past the mist, past the silence — were rooms where doors locked, and walls were thick, and no one watched you sleep.

She’d have to earn it. Not with what she was. With what she could afford to show.

Somewhere in the Pavilion, Yinxin slept. Reiko dreamed his transformation dream. The wyrmlings were safe behind walls that nothing could breach.

Here, in a borrowed bunk in a mountain that took everything, Jayde Ashford closed her eyes and listened to strangers breathe and tried to calculate how to be extraordinary enough to survive without being so extraordinary that she was discovered.

The numbers didn’t add up.

They never did.
