Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 222: Chapter 217: The Veiled Healer

Location: Thornhaven Village

Date/Time: 10 Ashwhisper, 9938 AZI

Realm: Mid Realm

Lyria felt them before she saw them.

She was helping Mira hang laundry behind the cottage—mundane, mindless work that let her thoughts drift—when the first tendrils of awareness brushed the edges of her perception. Presences. Many of them. Not hostile, exactly, but vast in a way that made the quintet’s already considerable power feel like candlelight beside a bonfire.

Her hands stilled on the damp cloth.

”Lyria?” Mira looked up, dark braids swinging. ”What’s wrong?”

”Company.” Lyria’s gaze drifted toward the tree line south of the village, where the ancient trail wound through the primordial forest. ”A lot of company.”

She reached for Voresh through the awareness she’d come to think of as a thread—not the bond the demons described among themselves, but something quieter. A knowing. He was already moving, his copper-bright presence shifting toward the village gate with purposeful speed.

He’d felt them too.

By the time Lyria reached the main road, half of Thornhaven had gathered. Villagers clustered in tight knots, their faces a map of every emotion Lyria’s empathy could catalogue: curiosity, wariness, outright fear. The six demons they’d absorbed over the past five days had been shocking enough. Whatever was approaching sounded like an army.

Elder Torvald stood at the gate, his Blazecrowned essence a steady flame among the flickering anxieties around him. Voresh appeared beside him, and the quintet materialized from whatever shadow-spaces they’d been occupying—Kael’vor solid as a mountain at Voresh’s right, the twins flanking, Drazhen and Sorvak completing the formation.

Then the forest parted, and Lyria forgot how to breathe.

***

They emerged from the tree line in perfect formation—and Lyria understood, with sudden clarity, what it meant to be a female demon outside her realm.

The point guard came first. Five ancient warriors who moved with the deliberate precision of beings who’d survived more millennia than Thornhaven had existed. Their hair had faded—copper dulled to tarnished bronze, crimson bleached to rust, white gone grey with age—but their eyes were sharp, scanning the village and its people with the cold efficiency of predators assessing a landscape. Behind them walked a massive figure, copper-brown hair streaked with silver and black pulled back severely from a face carved from weathered bronze. He was enormous—taller than Voresh, broader, his deep copper eyes cataloguing every soul in Thornhaven with a single sweeping glance. Everything about him said wall. Said nothing gets past me.

And behind him, surrounded, shielded, protected from every conceivable angle—

A figure in emerald green.

The robes were floor-length and layered, the hood deep enough to conceal every feature beneath shadow. Not a finger showed. Not a strand of hair. The fabric was rich—finer than anything Lyria had seen in Thornhaven, embroidered with patterns that shimmered faintly when the light caught them. Whoever wore those robes moved like water, graceful and unhurried, as though an army could have stood between her and her destination and she’d have simply flowed around them.

Behind the veiled figure, another five warriors formed the rear guard. And behind them—

Lyria’s empathy hit a wall of presences so dense it staggered her.

Soldiers. Warriors. A hundred at least, emerging from the forest in disciplined columns. They wore dark armor that absorbed light rather than reflecting it, carried weapons that hummed faintly with suppressed essence, and moved with a uniformity that made the quintet look casual by comparison. Each one radiated power at a level that made Lyria’s Flamewrought senses recoil.

The village erupted.

”Demons!” someone shouted. ”More of them—hundreds—”

”Gods preserve us—”

”Get the children inside—”

Kaela appeared at Lyria’s side, her pale blue eyes wide, wings rigid. ”No,” she breathed. ”No, no, no—”

”Mama—”

”He promised six.” Kaela’s voice had gone thin and brittle. ”He promised six demons, not an army. This is an invasion—”

”It’s not.” Voresh’s voice cut through the rising panic, calm and clear. He didn’t raise it—didn’t need to. The authority in that single statement drew every eye. ”This is how we travel with our females.”

The murmuring faltered. Confused looks passed through the crowd.

Before anyone could respond, the massive bronze-skinned demon stepped forward. He moved to the edge of the group, putting himself clearly in view of the villagers, and spoke.

”My name is Vorketh.” His voice was deep enough to feel in the chest—gravel and iron, the sound of mountains settling. He spoke few words, but each landed with weight. ”My mate is a healer. She has come to help your Prophetess.”

He let that settle. Didn’t rush to fill the silence.

”These warriors”—he gestured at the hundred Kael’thoren standing in perfect silence behind him—”are here to protect her. Not to interfere with you. Not to occupy your village. Not to involve themselves in your lives in any way.” His tarnished copper gaze swept the crowd, finding and holding each nervous face with a steadiness that felt more reassuring than any smile could have been. ”They will disperse around the village perimeter. You will not see them. You will not hear them. You will not know they are there unless something threatens this village—and then you will be very glad they are.”

Silence. The kind that followed a statement so plainly delivered it left no room for argument.

Aldris stepped forward, his pointed ears catching the morning light. ”And the healer? We were told someone was coming—”

”My mate.” Vorketh said the word with a gentleness that seemed impossible from someone built like a siege engine. ”She has gifts that may help the girl.”

”We appreciate the help.” Aldris’s voice carried the careful diplomacy of a man standing between his wife’s fury and his daughter’s need. ”Truly. But you’ll understand if the sight of a hundred armed warriors makes some of our people nervous.”

”Understood.” Vorketh turned to the Kael’thoren and made a single gesture—hand flat, palm down, then a sharp outward sweep.

They vanished.

Not dramatically. Not with flashes of essence or bursts of speed. They simply dispersed into the forest with such perfect efficiency that within thirty seconds, every last warrior had melted into the trees as though they’d never existed. The sounds of birds resumed. Leaves settled. The forest closed around the village like a living wall, and somewhere within it, a hundred elite demons stood invisible vigil.

A child laughed nervously. Someone muttered, ”Well. That’s... something.”

Voresh’s lips twitched. ”Told you.”

***

What happened next was something Lyria couldn’t have predicted.

The veiled figure moved through the village like warmth through cold water—slowly, gently, impossible to resist. She didn’t speak. Didn’t gesture. Didn’t do anything that Lyria could point to and say that, that’s why people are reacting this way. She simply... existed. And everything around her softened.

Garrick the blacksmith, who’d been gripping his hammer with white-knuckled anxiety, suddenly blurted: ”I’ve been overcharging Matthis for horseshoes because I’m still angry about that boundary dispute.”

His wife stared at him. ”You’ve been what?”

Garrick’s face went scarlet. He clamped both hands over his mouth, looking as horrified as if the words had crawled out without permission.

Near the well, old Sera turned to her husband and said, very clearly, ”I hate your mother’s bread. I’ve always hated it. It tastes like wet sawdust, and I’ve been feeding it to the pigs for twenty years.”

Her husband’s jaw dropped.

And the children—gods, the children. Whatever invisible force the veiled woman radiated, the youngest of Thornhaven responded to it like flowers to sunlight. Mira drifted toward the emerald robes as though pulled by a string, her usual shyness evaporating. Joren and Kael followed, the twins practically tripping over each other in their eagerness to get close. Other children materialized from doorways and hiding spots, drawn by something Lyria could feel through her empathy but couldn’t name.

Safety. That was the closest word. The veiled woman radiated safety—the deep, bone-level certainty that nothing bad could happen while she was near. It wasn’t cultivation, wasn’t essence, wasn’t any magic Lyria had encountered. It was something older and simpler.

Maternal. The word rose unbidden.

The veiled figure paused as tiny hands found the edges of her robes. Through the deep hood, Lyria sensed attention shifting downward. A hand emerged from the emerald fabric—pale, luminous, almost glowing—and rested briefly on Mira’s head.

Mira smiled. The incandescent, uncomplicated smile of a child who’d found exactly where she was supposed to be.

Lyria watched her sister lean into a stranger’s touch and felt something catch in her throat.

***

Vorketh watched his mate from ten paces away, and his heart did what it always did.

Broke. Healed. Broke again.

Eighteen thousand years. Eighteen thousand years of watching Vaelith’s hands find the heads of other people’s children, her essence wrap around small bodies that weren’t hers, her laugh ring bright and clear as she knelt to hear some toddler’s whispered secret. Eighteen thousand years of feeling her joy through the bond—pure, radiant, uncomplicated joy—while underneath, always underneath, the ache lived.

She wanted a child. Had always wanted a child. Since before the crisis, since before the deserts began swallowing the realm, since before the word barren became the slow-killing curse that hung over every truemated couple like smoke from a fire that would never go out.

He felt it now. Through the bond that had sustained them both across millennia, he felt the exact moment Vaelith’s joy crested and the darker current rose to meet it. The way it always did. The way it always would, unless things changed.

A small boy—one of the twins, copper-haired, pointed ears—was showing Vaelith something. A stick, maybe, or a stone. Something precious in the way only children’s treasures were precious. And Vaelith was kneeling in the dirt of this tiny village in the middle of nowhere, her priceless emerald robes pooling in the mud, examining this child’s gift with the same focused attention she’d have given a rare alchemical specimen.

The joy pulsed through the bond. Bright. Beautiful. Blinding.

And then the ache.

Not complaint. Never complaint. In eighteen thousand years, Vaelith had never once spoken the longing aloud, never made Vorketh feel that what they had wasn’t enough. But the bond didn’t lie. The bond had never lied, not in all the long years of their joining, and it didn’t lie now.

She ached for a child the way the desert ached for rain.

[I feel your heart, beloved.]

He sent it through their private link—not the common path, but the deeper channel that existed only between truemated pairs. Warmth wrapped in copper and stone, steady as the mountains he’d once called home.

Through the veil, he felt her smile. Felt the ache ease slightly as his warmth settled around it—not healing it, never that, but holding it. Acknowledging it. Saying I know. I carry it with you.

[You always know,] she sent back. Rueful. Tender.

[Always.]

The small boy was tugging at her hand now, trying to lead her somewhere. Vaelith rose gracefully, the emerald robes swirling, and let herself be pulled. Her quintet shifted with her—five ancient shadows flowing around one bright center—and Vorketh followed, as he always followed, close enough to protect and far enough to let her shine.

Eighteen thousand years, and she still made the world worth fighting for.

That would have to be enough.

It was.

It was everything.

***

The private meeting happened in Lyria’s cottage, after Aldris had cleared the room of everyone except family.

Almost everyone.

Voresh stood by the door, not inside but not leaving. His quintet had remained outside. Vorketh positioned himself just inside the threshold—a wall of bronze and copper between the doorway and everything beyond it. The cottage suddenly felt very small.

Voresh stepped forward slightly. ”This is Val’thara Vaelith. Life healer and seer. She trained under our last Prophetess—she knows the old techniques for controlling visions without burning life.”

The veiled figure inclined her head in greeting.

Aldris looked at Kaela. Kaela looked at nothing, her wings pressed flat, her pale blue eyes burning with something between fury and helplessness. Six more demons in her village. A hundred warriors surrounding it. And now she was supposed to welcome one into her home.

Vaelith raised her luminous hands—pale, almost glowing from within—and drew back the hood.

”Among our kind,” Voresh said quietly, ”a female shows her face only to those she trusts. This is not a small thing.”

Lyria’s breath caught.

She was beautiful. Not the way the quintet were beautiful, with their sharp-edged warrior grace and essence-colored intensity. This was something different. Something that made Lyria think of moonlight on still water, of the first warm day after a long winter, of her mother’s arms when she was very small, and the world was very large.

Midnight black hair cascaded over her shoulders, shot through with streaks of gold that caught the lamplight and green undertones that shifted when she moved. Her skin was luminous jade-white, almost glowing with an inner radiance that had nothing to do with cultivation—it simply was, the way sunlight simply was. And her eyes—vivid green with flecks of gold, the color of sunlit leaves—looked at Lyria with such focused tenderness that Lyria had to fight the urge to cry.

But it was the markings that stole her voice.

From the center of Vaelith’s forehead, between and just above her brows, an intricate pattern of silver-green filigree unfurled across her skin. Delicate as lace, fine as spider silk, the vine-like tracery arced above her eyebrows in symmetrical curves, traced the contours around her eyes like living frames, then continued downward along her jaw and disappeared beneath the collar of her robes toward her neck. Each line was unique—no two curves identical, no two branches following the same path—and the whole pattern pulsed with a faint, organic rhythm. Not glowing, exactly. Breathing. As though the markings themselves were alive.

”What...” Lyria whispered. ”What are those?”

”Shan’keth.” Vaelith’s voice was exactly what Lyria had expected and nothing like it at all. Melodic. Warm. Carrying the weight of ages without bending under it. ”The vine markings of demon females. We’re born with a single seed here”—she touched the center point between her brows—”and they grow with us. Every pattern is unique. A reflection of the soul within.”

Lyria stared. She couldn’t help it. The markings were mesmerizing—alien and beautiful and unlike anything she’d ever seen on any being in Thornhaven or beyond.

”You’re staring, sweetheart,” Aldris murmured.

”Sorry. I’m sorry, I—”

”Don’t apologize.” Vaelith smiled, and the room felt warmer. ”Curiosity is a gift.” Her green-gold gaze moved to Kaela, who hadn’t spoken. Hadn’t moved. Stood against the far wall with her wings wrapped around herself like armor. ”You must be Kaela.”

Kaela said nothing.

”I understand your fear,” Vaelith continued gently. ”I won’t pretend I don’t. Your daughter has been thrust into a world she never asked for, and now strangers are crowding your home with promises you have no reason to trust. That’s terrifying. I would feel the same.”

Still nothing from Kaela. But Lyria caught the faintest tremor in her mother’s wings.

Vaelith turned to Lyria, and the tenderness in her expression sharpened into something more clinical. More focused. The healer emerging from behind the gentle warmth.

”May I?” She raised one luminous hand.

Lyria nodded.

Vaelith’s palm settled against her forehead, just below the silver prophetic rune. Warmth flooded through Lyria—not heat, but life. The essence of growing things, of roots drinking deep, of seeds splitting open in dark earth. It moved through her like water, touching everything, finding every crack and wound and worn-thin place where her body had been burning itself to fuel visions it was never meant to sustain.

Vaelith’s eyes went wide. Then narrow. Then flat with the particular stillness of someone cataloguing damage they wished they hadn’t found.

”How long?” The warmth in her voice had chilled. Not unkind—precise. A healer’s precision, surgical and unflinching.

”How long what?”

”How long have you been hemorrhaging life force without treatment?”

Lyria glanced at Voresh, who stood very still by the door. ”Since my awakening. About three weeks.”

Vaelith’s jaw tightened. Her hand moved from Lyria’s forehead to her chest, then her abdomen, the life essence probing deeper with each touch. The silence stretched, broken only by the faint hum of diagnostic magic and Kaela’s shallow breathing.

”The visions are untrained,” Vaelith said finally, withdrawing her hand. ”Every time your prophetic gift activates, it draws on your life force because you have no other fuel source. The previous Prophetess—our Prophetess—learned techniques that allowed her to channel ambient essence instead. Without those techniques, your body has been feeding itself to your gift.”

”We know,” Aldris said quietly. ”We can see it.”

”What you can see is the surface.” Vaelith’s gaze held Lyria’s, steady and unblinking. ”The aging—looking older than your years—that’s the visible cost. But underneath, the damage goes deeper. Your organs are stressed. Your heart, your lungs, the channels that carry essence through your body—all of them show the kind of wear I’d expect in someone three times your age. If left untreated...” She paused. Measured her words with the care of someone delivering a blow she couldn’t soften. ”You would have perhaps fifteen to twenty years. Fewer if you continued using your gift without training.”

A sound came from the doorway. Low, animal, involuntary—the growl of something ancient tearing free from a cage of discipline. Voresh had gone rigid, his copper eyes blazing, every line of his body straining toward Lyria as though an invisible chain was the only thing holding him back. The air around him thickened with essence he wasn’t bothering to contain.

”Zhu’tal, vor’shira.” Vaelith’s voice shifted—still gentle, but carrying a command that resonated deeper than sound. The demon tongue, spoken with the quiet authority of a female who expected to be obeyed. ”Vor’anara zhu’keth sal. Tal’ahn veth zhura.” Peace, warrior. Your mate is not in danger. I am here.

Voresh stopped. Not gradually—instantly, completely, as though the words had reached into his chest and closed a fist around the beast trying to claw its way out. His hands were trembling. His jaw was clenched hard enough to crack stone. But he stopped.

He bowed his head. Once. A single sharp motion of submission—not to authority, but to truth. To the female voice that his nature could not refuse.

The cottage went silent.

”Fifteen...” Aldris’s voice cracked.

”If she didn’t overtax her powers,” Vaelith continued, each word deliberately placed. ”Given the frequency and intensity of the visions Voresh has described—the ones that aged you physically—I’d estimate less than that. Significantly less.”

Something broke in Kaela. Not loudly. Not dramatically. She simply folded. Wings crumpling against the wall, knees giving way, her body sliding down until she sat on the floor with her hands pressed to her face. The sound she made was barely human—a wounded animal’s keening, thin and terrible and old.

Aldris was beside her in an instant, arms around her, his own face ashen.

Lyria stood frozen. Fifteen years. She’d been told the visions cost her. She’d accepted five years of aging as the price for saving a stranger. But she hadn’t known—hadn’t understood—that the cost went so much deeper than the face in the mirror.

”But,” Vaelith said, and the word cut through the grief like a blade through fog. ”I can stop the hemorrhaging. I can repair the damage to your organs, your channels, your overtaxed systems. The techniques I know—the ones I learned from our last Prophetess—will teach you to fuel your visions without burning your own life. Everything except the years already lost can be reversed.”

Lyria’s throat closed. ”Everything?”

”Your body will heal. Your organs will recover. Your natural lifespan will be restored.” Vaelith’s green-gold eyes were unwavering. ”But you will always look five years older than you are. That price has been paid. It cannot be returned.”

”I don’t care about how I look.” The words came out rough, scraped raw. ”I care about being alive long enough to matter.”

Something flickered in Vaelith’s eyes. Respect, maybe. Or recognition.

”Then we begin tomorrow. The first session will be uncomfortable—your body has been running on borrowed time, and convincing it to stop will hurt.” She paused. ”You’ll need to rest tonight. Eat well. And try not to use your gift until I’ve taught you how to do so safely.”

Lyria nodded. Her legs felt unsteady, but she locked her knees and refused to sit. Not while her mother was on the floor. Not while her father held her mother like she was the one dying.

Vaelith turned toward Kaela. The gentleness returned to her voice, layered over the clinical precision like silk over steel. ”Kaela. I would like to speak with you privately, when you’re ready. About your daughter’s abilities. About the techniques you taught her—the empathic barriers.” A pause, weighted with meaning Lyria couldn’t quite parse. ”About things a mother teaches her children that she perhaps didn’t realize she knew.”

Kaela’s hands dropped from her face. Her pale blue eyes met Vaelith’s green-gold ones across the small room, and Lyria felt the collision of those gazes through her empathy like a physical shock. Fear. Rage. Old, old pain—the kind that had calcified into something harder than bone.

”No.” Kaela’s voice was raw but absolute. ”I have nothing to say to you.”

Vaelith inclined her head. No offense taken. No surprise. Just patient acceptance, as though she’d expected the answer and was willing to wait.

”When you’re ready,” she said again. ”I’ll be here.”

Kaela turned her face to the wall and said nothing more.

Aldris met Lyria’s eyes over her mother’s head. In his gaze, she saw the same question that had been circling her own mind since the demons first arrived, growing louder with every impossible revelation.

What are you hiding, Kaela? What do you know that you’ve never told us?

The questions would keep. They’d been keeping for fourteen years—a few more days wouldn’t kill anyone.

But Lyria looked at Vaelith’s vine markings one last time before the healer drew her hood back up. Silver-green filigree, breathing softly against luminous skin. Beautiful in a way that made something in Lyria’s chest ache—the same way a perfect sunrise ached, or a melody sung in a language you didn’t speak but somehow understood.

She touched her own forehead. The prophetic rune pulsed warm beneath her fingers, its silver geometry nothing like the organic, living tracery of the Shan’keth. Different marks. Different purposes. But both were written on skin by forces larger than the women who wore them.

Tomorrow, the healing would begin.

Tonight, Lyria sat on her windowsill and pressed the feather to her chest—grey to silver to gold, warm against her heart—and tried not to think about the number fifteen.

Tried not to think about how close she’d come to a life measured in seasons instead of decades.

Tried, and failed, and watched the stars instead.

Somewhere below, Voresh’s presence pulsed steady at the edge of her awareness. Somewhere beyond the tree line, a hundred warriors stood invisible guard. Somewhere in the cottage behind her, her mother wept silently into her father’s chest, holding secrets that were cracking under the weight of truths she’d never expected to face.

And somewhere inside Lyria—in the space between what she knew and what she was beginning to suspect—a question took root.

What am I?

The answer was getting closer. She could feel it, the way she felt storms before they broke.

She wasn’t sure she was ready.

But ready or not, it was coming.
