Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 236: Chapter 231: Thirty Days

Location: Thornhaven Village / Training Clearing

Date/Time: 20 Ashwhisper, 9938 AZI

Realm: Mid Realm

The forests burned.

Not with wildfire — with Radiance essence, concentrated and directed, pouring from the hands of hunters who moved through the primordial forests in coordinated sweeps. Ancient ironbarks that had stood for millennia exploded into columns of white flame. The canopy collapsed inward, driving everything beneath it into the open — animals, people, families that had lived under those branches for generations.

The settlements fell one by one.

Thornhaven was first. Lyria watched the walls that Kael’vor had built — the beautiful stone reinforced with Drazhen’s metalwork — shatter under a concentrated barrage from eight Peak Apexblight shadow guard operatives. The wardstones cracked. The defensive formations collapsed. The entire assault took eleven minutes.

Eleven minutes to end a community that had survived for decades in no-man’s-land.

The villagers fought. Torvald was magnificent — a Peak Blazecrowned elder spending everything he had, his essence blazing like a sun as he held the eastern gate alone against three Apexblight hunters. He lasted four minutes. Longer than anyone had a right to expect. Not long enough.

They dragged the children out first.

Lyria watched Mira — eleven years old, dark braids, her sister’s stubborn chin — pulled from the cottage by a hunter who held her by the wing the way you’d hold a rabbit by the ears. Mira screamed. Kicked. Bit. The hunter shook her once, hard, and she went limp.

Joren and Kael fought back to back. Eight years old and swinging stolen kitchen knives at soldiers who could have flattened mountains. They lasted seconds. A backhanded blow sent Joren spinning into the cottage wall. Kael was pinned by an essence construct that held him to the ground like an insect under glass.

The adults who resisted were killed where they stood. The ones who surrendered were sorted. Women of breeding age to the left. Everyone else to the right.

The right-hand group was marched into the forest. They didn’t come back.

***

Settlement after settlement. The vision compressed time but not horror, forcing Lyria to witness the broad strokes of each collapse — the walls breached, the wardstones silenced, the families torn apart. Eight hundred thousand people processed with the cold efficiency of a harvest. Children loaded onto wagons in groups of fifty, bound by essence dampeners that turned their screaming into silence. Women chained in lines, their wings — those who had wings — pinned with metal clasps that bit into membrane and muscle.

The other races watched. The aetherwing villages shuttered their windows and locked their doors and told themselves it wasn’t their problem. The elven courts issued statements of concern and did nothing. The human kingdoms — the same kingdoms that had petitioned the Temple for help eradicating the mixed breeds — celebrated. The vermin were being cleared. Order was being restored. Everything was as it should be.

No one came to help. Because no one wanted to.

***

The breeding pens.

Lyria had seen the cribs in her first vision. She’d seen the grinding stones and the drainage channels and the pills. But that had been Sharlin’s current operation — small, constrained by supply, limited to dozens of children at a time.

This was industrial.

The old garrison complexes along the Upper Realm’s northern wall had been converted. Vast stone buildings, each capable of holding thousands, subdivided into cells. Each cell contained a metal cot, a waste channel, an essence dampener bolted to the wall, and a woman.

Mixed-breed women. Mothers, daughters, sisters — sorted by age and fertility, stripped of names, assigned numbers.

All of them were pregnant.

The cells had no doors. No privacy. No windows. Just open fronts facing long corridors, so the guards could walk past and check on their inventory the way a farmer checks on livestock.

The births happened on schedule. Temple healers — if you could call them healers — monitored the pregnancies with clinical efficiency, adjusting the essence dampeners to ensure maximum yield without killing the mother before she could conceive again. When a woman’s body gave out — when the pregnancies came too close together, when the healing couldn’t compensate, when something simply broke inside — she was removed.

Replaced.

There were always more.

The children born in the pens never saw sunlight. They were taken from their mothers within hours of birth, sorted by essence potential, and placed in the nursery wings. The ones with strong channels went to the cultivation chambers. The ones without went to the grinding rooms.

The grinding rooms.

Lyria saw them. Really saw them — not the fragmented glimpse of her first vision, but the full, unobstructed view of a system operating at scale. Long stone halls, cool and dry, lit by essence lamps that cast everything in clinical white. Stone tables arranged in rows. Drainage channels cut into the floor, flowing into collection basins. Tools — not weapons, tools, specifically designed, purpose-built — hanging on pegs along the walls.

The children were brought in groups. Sedated. Laid on the tables. The process was mechanical, efficient, perfected over eight thousand years of practice. Essence extraction first — slow, methodical, pulling the life energy from tiny bodies in controlled increments that maximised yield. Then the physical components. Bone marrow. Blood. Organs. Rendered down, refined, compressed into the bone-white pills that pulsed with stolen life.

Soulbloom pills.

Each one contained a child.

The workers who operated the grinding rooms wore masks. Not to hide their identities — to filter the smell. After eight thousand years, the smell was the only thing that still bothered them. Everything else had become routine.

***

The pills worked.

Sharlin’s chosen cultivators consumed them in carefully measured doses — one pill per week, escalating as tolerance built. The effects were immediate and terrifying. Blazecrowned cultivators surging to Apexblight in months. Apexblight reaching peak within a year. And then — the ones with the strongest constitutions, the ones who could absorb pill after pill without their channels fracturing — Eternalpyre.

Eternalpyre cultivators, produced in years instead of millennia. Dozens of them. Then hundreds.

Their power tasted wrong. Lyria could feel it through the vision — a wrongness in the essence, a discord, like a note played on a broken instrument. The cultivators who consumed Soulbloom pills were powerful, undeniably powerful, but something in them had curdled. Their eyes held a flatness that went beyond discipline into something emptied. They followed orders without question. They killed without hesitation. They were weapons, not people — and Sharlin wielded them with the precision of a woman who understood that an army built on atrocity would do anything to avoid examining what it was built on.

The Mid Realm fell in three years. Not through conquest — through consumption.

The Soulbloom army moved through the Mid Realm like a plague with purpose. The Aetherwing villages that had shuttered their windows and locked their doors and told themselves it wasn’t their problem learned what it felt like to become the problem. Temple soldiers installed in every home. Aetherwing males killed or driven into the forests. Aetherwing females — with their strong essence channels, their breeding potential, their beautiful, useless wings — herded into communal holding buildings that had once been meeting halls and markets and places where people laughed. Added to the breeding pens. Fresh stock for the grinding rooms.

The Elves fared no better. Their settlements stripped — artifacts confiscated, libraries burned, cultivation resources seized. Males collared with essence suppressors and marched in chains toward labour camps, where they would spend the rest of their shortened lives mining and building, and serving until their bodies gave out. Females sorted the same way the mixed breeds had been sorted. Breeding age to the left. Everyone else to the right.

The human kingdoms — the same kingdoms that had petitioned the Temple for help eradicating the mixed breeds, that had celebrated the clearing of vermin from their borders — discovered too late that vermin was a category that expanded. The Temple of Light declared a holy mandate. Comply or be crushed. The kings who had written ”breeding worse than rats” found themselves kneeling before Eternalpyre soldiers whose power tasted of the children they’d helped condemn.

The Lower Realm passageways were the last thing Sharlin sealed. She didn’t need them anymore — the Mid Realm was hers, the supply lines were established, and the barbarians below had nothing she wanted. Temple engineers collapsed the ancient portal structures with surgical precision, shattering frameworks that had connected the realms for millennia. The Lower Realm residents on the other side felt the tremor and the silence that followed — the sudden absence of connection, like a severed limb — and by the time they understood what it meant, there was nothing left to reconnect to.

Cut off. Blind. Learning about the fall of the world above them through rumour and silence and the slow, creeping understanding that everything had changed into something unrecognisable.

And Sharlin, seated on a throne that grew with every realm she consumed, turned her attention upward.

***

The hell gate opened.

Lyria watched Sharlin stand before it — a massive arch of black stone in the deepest chamber beneath the Temple of Light, carved with symbols that predated the Temple, predated the kingdoms, predated everything except the war that had nearly ended the world ten thousand years ago.

Sharlin knelt.

The High Priestess of the Temple of Light, the woman who commanded an army of Eternalpyre cultivators and ruled three-quarters of the known world, pressed her forehead to the stone floor before the gate and waited.

Something answered.

The gate flared. Not with light — with the absence of light, a darkness so complete it seemed to consume the air itself. And through it came a presence that made Sharlin’s Eternalpyre army feel like candle flames beside a sun.

The Zartonesh.

They poured through the gate like a tide of darkness. Massive. Ancient. Wrong in ways that bypassed the eyes and struck something deeper — some primal, ancestral part of the brain that recognized extinction when it saw it. They were the things that had nearly destroyed the world once before. The things that had been sealed away at the cost of millions of lives and the creation of the AZI calendar. The things that every civilization on Doha measured time from the defeat of, because the alternative was too terrible to contemplate.

Sharlin had invited them back.

She rose from her kneel. Stood before the general — a towering figure of black armour and burning void-light, larger than anything living had a right to be — and she smiled. The same smile she’d worn when she’d looked at the map and said cattle.

”I’ve prepared the way,” she said. ”The realms are yours. All I ask for is the demon king.”

The vision shifted.

Snapshots. Fragments. The future compressing into images that burned behind Lyria’s eyes like brands.

Endless Zartonesh. Surrounding the demon realm. A sea of darkness pressing against the last free realm on Doha, the only kingdom that hadn’t fallen, the only people who had fought the Zartonesh before and remembered what it cost.

The demons on the battlefield. All of them. Every last one — the ancient warriors, the young ones who’d never seen war, the males with their fading vor’kesh leaves, and the females. The females who had never been asked to fight. Who had been protected, cherished, shielded from violence for the entirety of demon history. Standing in battle formation beside their males, because there was no one left to protect and nothing left to lose.

Ren at the front. Purple eyes blazing. Soulblade drawn. Ten thousand years of kingship compressed into a single moment of defiance against the end of everything.

And the Zartonesh general, towering above the battlefield, raising an armoured fist and screaming an order that carried across the plain like the voice of the void itself:

”Kill all the women. Capture all the men.”

The vision snapped.

***

Lyria was speaking.

She didn’t know when she’d started. The words poured from her mouth like water through a broken dam — not her words, not her voice, but the raw, unfiltered transmission of prophetic sight given sound. The Prophetess speaking through the girl, the way it always happened, the way it had happened to every seer before her for ten thousand years.

She couldn’t stop it. Couldn’t control it. Could only feel the shapes of the words leaving her throat and know, distantly, that they were terrible.

”She will close the passageways. Thirty days. The shadow guard moves first — Peak Apexblight operatives, full deployment. Every settlement. Every child. Eight hundred thousand people, four hundred and fifty thousand children, no one will miss them because no one ever has.” Her voice was wrong. Too flat. Too certain. The voice of someone reporting facts rather than prophecies. ”The breeding pens. The garrison complexes. Metal cots and essence dampeners and women who never see sunlight again. The children sorted — strong channels to the cultivation chambers, weak channels to the grinding rooms. Bone and blood and marrow rendered into pills. Four hundred and fifty thousand children—”

Through the cocoon of wings, she felt Voresh’s arms tighten. Felt the bond flooding with something vast and dark and terrible — not comfort, not fury, but a compound of both so intense it made her teeth ache.

She couldn’t stop.

”The Aetherwings enslaved. The Elves in chains. The Mid Realm falls in three years. The Lower Realm sealed behind broken passageways. And Sharlin—” Her voice cracked. The prophetic flatness stuttered, and for a moment, Lyria’s own horror bled through before the vision seized her again. ”Sharlin kneels. Before the hell gate. She opens it. She opens the gate, and they come through — the Zartonesh, the Zartonesh come through, and there are so many, so many—”

A sound escaped her that wasn’t a word. A whimper. A fourteen-year-old girl underneath the Prophetess, trying to un-see something that was branded into her gift.

”The demons. All the demons. Men and women on the battlefield. All of them. The last realm. The last stand. And the general — the Zartonesh general — he screams—”

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

”Kill all the women. Capture all the men.”

The vision released her. Not gently — like a jaw unclenching, like something that had been gripping her skull from the inside, finally letting go. She gasped, and the world crashed back in. Moss. Pine resin. The leather smell of Voresh’s wings. Her own ragged breathing echoing inside the copper shelter of his half-transformation.

And silence.

Absolute, devastating silence from every person within earshot.

Lyria blinked. Her eyes were wet — she didn’t remember crying. Her throat ached from speaking. She could taste copper on her tongue, and when she touched her upper lip, her fingers came away red.

”How much,” she whispered, ”did I say out loud?”

Voresh’s voice was very controlled. The kind of control that cost something. ”All of it.”

She closed her eyes.

Beyond the wings, she could hear the sounds of people who had just listened to the end of the world described by a fourteen-year-old girl speaking in a voice that wasn’t hers. Kaela’s ragged breathing — her mother had come outside, Lyria realised. Had heard everything. Aldris murmuring something too low to catch. Torvald’s heavy, deliberate exhale — the sound of a man recalibrating everything he thought he knew about the scope of the danger they were in.

The quintet was silent. Five ancient warriors, the youngest eight thousand years old, standing in formation around their charge — and not one of them moved. Not one of them spoke. The silence of demons who had just heard a prophetess describe the death of their race, narrated in a child’s voice from inside a cocoon of their brother’s wings.

”Lyria.” Voresh’s copper eyes were burning — not tarnished, not dulled, but bright as forge-fire. ”I need you to look at me.”

She did.

”You’re here,” he said. ”You’re whole. Your mind is your own.”

She nodded. It was. The vision had been controlled — anchored through the bond and the wings and the warmth of him, nothing like the pulling that had nearly killed her. She was shaken, bleeding from the nose, hollowed out by what she’d seen. But she was present.

”Good.” Voresh’s wings folded back slowly. Light flooded in — afternoon sun, pine shadows, the wardstone path dappled with green and gold. ”Because we need to talk about what happens next.”

***

The argument happened in the clearing.

Not the training clearing — the smaller one near the stream, where the quintet had rigged a perimeter ward, and Vaelith had declared a confidential healing space. Lyria sat on a fallen log with a damp cloth pressed to her nose while Voresh paced — not his usual measured patrol, but the tight, agitated circuit of a man whose every instinct was screaming one thing and whose truemate was about to say another.

Vaelith was there. Vorketh at her shoulder. Kael’vor at the clearing’s edge, listening. Torvald had been invited.

”You’re coming to the demon realm.” Voresh said it like a fact. Like gravity, or sunrise.

Lyria lowered the cloth. The bleeding had stopped. The headache hadn’t. ”No.”

”Lyria—”

”No.”

”You just described the systematic extermination of every mixed-breed person in the Mid Realm. Eight hundred thousand people. And Sharlin begins in thirty days.” Voresh’s voice was still controlled, but the copper in his eyes blazed. ”I cannot protect you here. Not against Peak Apexblight shadow guard operatives in full deployment.”

”Then don’t protect me.” Lyria stood. The fallen log was too low — sitting made her feel small, and she refused to feel small right now. Even standing, she barely reached his chin. She didn’t care. ”Protect them. All of them.”

Voresh stopped pacing.

”You heard what I said. What the vision showed. She’s not coming for me — she doesn’t even know I exist yet. She’s coming for the mixed breeds. For the settlements. For the children.” Lyria’s voice shook, and she let it. ”If you take me to the demon realm, I survive. Wonderful. And eight hundred thousand people die in breeding pens. And the Aetherwings are enslaved. And the Elves are chained. And everything falls. And the Zartonesh come through. And your people — your people, Voresh — fight their last battle, with your women standing beside your men because there’s no one left to protect them.”

The clearing went quiet. The stream murmured over stones.

”She’s right, demon.” Torvald’s voice carried the weight of a man who’d spent his life protecting outcasts and had just learned the scale of what was coming. ”If what the girl saw is true — and I’ve never known her visions to lie — then running saves one family. Maybe two. Everything else burns.”

Voresh looked at Vaelith. The healer’s green-gold eyes were steady, her Shan’keth markings faintly luminous.

”She is right,” Vaelith said simply. ”And you know it.”

Something shifted in Voresh’s expression. Not defeat — recalculation. The expression of a scout adjusting mission parameters when the terrain changed. Thirty thousand years of service. He knew what this required.

”I need to contact Ren,” he said.

***

The communication happened through the common path — the deep, essence-carried connection that linked demon to demon across realms. Lyria couldn’t hear it directly. She felt echoes through the bond — surges of emotion that weren’t hers, filtered through Voresh’s end of the thread. Anger. Sharp, hot, the fury of a king confronting an atrocity on a scale that defied comprehension.

Then something colder. Harder. The anger compressed into purpose.

When Voresh returned, the agitation was gone. In its place — something quieter. More dangerous. The expression of a man who had just received orders he intended to follow with absolute precision.

”The king is... furious,” Voresh said. The pause before furious suggested the actual word was longer and less diplomatic. ”But he sees the necessity.”

”And?” Lyria pressed.

”Sanctuary.” Voresh looked at Torvald. Then at Lyria. ”For all of them. Every mixed-breed person who will come. The demon realm will take them.”

Torvald’s eyes narrowed. ”At what cost?”

”A blood oath of loyalty to the demon crown. Standard political mechanism — it binds both parties. The oath-takers serve the king’s interests and obey his laws. In return, the king is bound to protect them, provide for them, and never act against their wellbeing. Any violation by the king releases the bond — and every demon in the realm would know it. A broken oath is visible in the common path. It cannot be hidden.”

”That’s citizenship with extra steps.”

”It is citizenship. With teeth that cut both ways.”

”There’s more,” Voresh continued. ”Ren offers a city. Their own. Within demon territory, protected by demon forces, but governed by their own leaders. Autonomy in all internal matters. They answer to the crown for realm defence and law, but how they live, how they worship, how they raise their children — that’s theirs.”

”Why?” Torvald’s voice was blunt. ”Why would the demon king offer a city and protection to eight hundred thousand refugees? What does he gain?”

Voresh’s copper eyes held something old and aching. ”A population. Allies. People who will fight beside us when Sharlin’s army comes — because make no mistake, Elder, what your prophetess just described doesn’t end with the mixed breeds. It ends with the Zartonesh at our gates. Ren is not offering charity. He is offering an alliance born of mutual survival.”

Torvald leaned on his walking stick. Looked at the ground. Then at the sky. Then at Lyria, who was watching him with the steady gaze of a girl who had seen the end of the world and decided to argue with it.

”A conclave,” Torvald said. ”You’d need a conclave. Every settlement elder we can reach. This isn’t a decision one village makes.”

”Can you call one?”

”In thirty days? With the shadow guard already mobilising?” He exhaled through his nose. Then straightened, and the weariness in his expression hardened into something sharper. ”We have the signal fires. The runner network. Every mixed-breed settlement in the primordial forests is connected — we’ve maintained emergency communication lines since before I was born. Generations of being hunted teaches you to stay linked. When one village sees smoke, every village within a hundred miles knows within hours.”

”How fast can you bring them?”

”Emergency conclave protocol. Three days — fire signals tonight, runners at dawn, fast-movers carrying the word through the arterial paths. The network reaches every settlement within five days. The elders who can travel will travel. The ones who can’t will send representatives with authority to vote.” Torvald’s grey eyes were hard and bright. ”Our people have been preparing to run at a moment’s notice for generations, demon. We know how to move fast when the hunters come. We just never imagined having somewhere to run to.”

”Five days,” Voresh said.

”Five days. And they’ll need proof. You can’t ask eight hundred thousand people to abandon their homes on the word of one village’s prophetess.”

”Torvald will speak for her,” Vaelith said. ”His reputation carries weight across the settlements. And I can authenticate the vision — my Shan’keth will confirm its truth to anyone who questions it.”

”Will that be enough?” Lyria asked.

No one answered immediately. The silence said what words wouldn’t — that reputation and authentication might not be enough to convince forty communities to uproot everything they’d built on the testimony of a fourteen-year-old girl none of them had met.

”It will have to be,” Torvald said.

Another pulse through the bond — Ren, distant, sending something through Voresh. Not words. Emotion. Grim resolve, ancient grief, and beneath it, the iron-cold determination of a king who had watched his people die for ten thousand years and would burn the world before he watched it happen to anyone else.

The message was clear.

Call the conclave. I will answer.

Torvald straightened. For a moment, the decades fell away — the grey beard and the weathered lines and the walking stick he didn’t need. He was just an elder who’d spent his life keeping outcasts alive, and now the outcasts needed him more than ever.

”I will send out the call,” he said. And then, quieter, with the weight of everything those words meant: ”By Ala’s mercy, we’d better be fast enough.”

Behind them, Kaela stood at the clearing’s edge. She’d followed. Heard everything. Her wings were pressed flat against her back, and her face was white, but her eyes — those eyes that had been closed and distant for four days — were open.

Open, and burning.

She looked at Lyria. At Voresh. At the copper wings still half-extended behind him, catching afternoon light like hammered metal.

She didn’t speak. But something in her expression shifted — a crack in the wall she’d built, a fracture line running through forty years of fear, and through it, like light through a fissure: recognition.

Not of the demon. Of the truth.

Her daughter’s people needed saving. All of them. And the only ones offering to help were the creatures she’d spent her life hating.

Kaela turned and walked back toward the village. Stiff-backed. Wings tight. But walking. Moving. Not closed behind her door, not lying in the dark pretending the world wasn’t ending.

Moving.

Aldris watched her go. The tips of his pointed ears flushed — not with stress this time.

With hope.
