Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 237: Chapter 232: The First Week

Location: Obsidian Academy

Date/Time: 18-24 Ashwhisper, 9938 AZI

Realm: Lower Realm

The Academy bell woke her at dawn.

Not the midnight bell — that one had been deep, resonant, the kind of sound that settled into stone and stayed there. This was different. Higher. Sharper. The auditory equivalent of someone pulling your blanket off and telling you to move.

Jayde was dressed before the second toll.

Operational status: alert. Cover identity active. Objectives for today — establish routine, identify threat vectors, map the terrain.

(I miss Yinxin.)

She’s safe. Focus.

Through the bond with Reiko — distant, muffled, turned inward — the same slow pulse. Six days unconscious now. Whatever was reshaping him was still working. She couldn’t check on him properly. Couldn’t access the Pavilion. Not with seven girls in the room who’d notice if their bunkmate vanished and reappeared.

On the pillow — her pillow, technically, but ownership had been renegotiated through the simple expedient of occupation — Takara yawned. Stretched. His blue-tipped ears swivelled toward the door, then toward the window, then toward her. The pink ribbon on his left ear caught the grey pre-dawn light. His obsidian disc tag clicked softly against the small crystal on his collar.

”Morning,” she said.

Mew.

She scooped him onto her shoulder. He settled against her neck with the boneless competence of a small animal who’d perfected the art of being carried, claws hooked into her collar just firmly enough to hold.

The dormitory hallway smelled like old stone and someone else’s breakfast — rice porridge, she thought. Maybe salted fish. Her stomach made a sound that had nothing to do with dignity.

Food first. Then reconnaissance.

***

The communal mess hall was enormous and entirely underwhelming.

Long wooden tables, scarred by decades of students who’d apparently felt the need to carve their names, complaints, and in one case a remarkably detailed anatomical diagram into the surface. The food came from a serving counter staffed by two women whose expressions suggested they had seen every variety of teenage cultivator the world could produce and were impressed by none of them. Porridge. Steamed buns. Pickled vegetables. Weak tea.

Jayde took everything offered and sat down.

Eden found her within minutes. The healer slid onto the bench opposite with the particular efficiency of someone who had already mapped the dining hall’s sight lines and chosen a seat that put her back to the wall.

Interesting habit for a village girl.

”The preservation wards on those vegetables are surprisingly effective,” Eden said, inspecting a pickled radish with the focused attention most people reserved for things that were either very interesting or very suspicious. ”Layered formation work. Someone here actually understands enzymatic degradation and designed the preservation matrix accordingly.”

That phrasing. ”Enzymatic degradation.” ”Preservation matrix.” Unusual vocabulary for someone village-trained. File it.

”You sound impressed.”

”I sound hungry.” Eden bit the radish. Chewed. Considered. ”The texture’s wrong, though. Overcured. Two days past optimal.”

Jayde ate her porridge. All of it. The buns. The vegetables. The tea, which tasted the way lukewarm disappointment felt, but had warmth, and that was enough. You didn’t waste food. You didn’t leave things on your plate. You didn’t know when the next meal would be complicated by something trying to kill you, and a full stomach was a tactical advantage that cost nothing.

”I read the handbook last night,” Eden said. ”The costs section.”

”And?”

Eden set her chopsticks down. ”Normal Class gets zero stipend. Did you catch that?”

”I caught it.”

”Fifty merit a month for housing. No income. After clearing the enrollment debt, we’d have maybe three months of cushion if we performed well in the Secret Realm.” Eden’s voice was calm. Clinical. The voice of someone running numbers on a problem that had no good answer. ”And that’s before course fees. Eighty merit per term for practical courses. Materials on top of that — spirit ink, array plates, forge time. The handbook lists the base costs but not the real ones. I want to see the Merit Hall.”

She thinks like an analyst. Not a village orphan crunching numbers for the first time — someone who’s assessed institutional resource allocation before.

(She’s right, though. The handbook is the brochure. We need the actual prices.)

”After breakfast,” Jayde said.

***

Merit Hall was worse than the handbook.

They went after the morning meal, crossing through the Common District’s wide plaza where spiritual lanterns drifted overhead, and the ranking board pillars stood blank and waiting. The Merit Hall’s doors were open — they were always open, Jayde would learn — and inside, the glowing crystal slabs displayed prices that the handbook had listed in careful, precise detail.

What the handbook hadn’t listed was context.

”Spirit ink,” Eden said, reading from a display case. ”Fifteen merit per vial. Standard consumption for a single Inscription practical session: two to three vials.” She looked at Jayde. ”That’s thirty to forty-five merit for one class session. The course fee is eighty per term. The materials cost more than the course.”

Jayde was reading the alchemy section. ”Basic ingredient set for pill refining practice: fifty merit per batch. Expected failure rate for first-year students: seventy percent.” She did the math. ”You’d burn through three batches minimum before producing anything sellable. That’s a hundred and fifty merit to learn a technique that might earn you twenty merit if you succeed.”

”The forge is five merit per hour. Refining Hall requires a minimum of three hours per practical session.”

”Fifteen merit per session, before materials.”

They stood in the Merit Hall for an hour. Reading. Calculating. The numbers painted a picture that the handbook had only sketched.

In-house missions — cleaning, gardening, maintaining beast pens — paid one merit per two hours. A full day of labour: four merit. The kind of money that couldn’t fund a single practical course session, let alone a month of actual education.

The higher-paying missions — the Whites and Greens, and Blues listed on the jade panels in the Mission Hall — were locked behind the three-month wall. For the first quarter, every new student was trapped in the low-earning economy, burning through whatever they’d earned in the Secret Realm.

”It’s a funnel,” Eden said. They’d moved to a bench in the Common District plaza, the handbook open between them, Eden’s notes — precise, tiny handwriting that Jayde noticed was unusually neat for someone supposedly self-taught — filling the margins. ”The Academy makes money three ways. First, the Secret Realm harvest — herbs, beast cores, materials, all sold back to the Academy at institutional rates because outside missions are locked. Second, the labour pool — Normal Class students doing maintenance work at below-market wages. Third, the course fees — you can’t advance without practical courses, and practical courses cost more than most students can earn.”

Institutional economic analysis. Accurate. Comprehensive. The kind of analysis that requires understanding of supply-chain economics, labour markets, and institutional incentive structures.

Again, unusual for a village orphan.

File it.

”The only class that breaks even is Elite,” Jayde said. ”Three hundred and fifty stipend, three hundred housing. Fifty merit per month surplus, plus priority enrollment, means you actually get into the courses you need.”

”And Elite is the top two thousand.” Eden closed the handbook. ”Out of two hundred thousand applicants.”

”Top one percent.”

”Top one percent,” Eden repeated. Her blue eyes were steady. ”So we rank in the top one percent.”

She said it the way someone else might say so we walk to the market. Not confidence — certainty. The quiet, immovable certainty of someone who had already decided the outcome and was now just managing the logistics.

(I like her.)

Noted. Tactically irrelevant. Continue.

***

The days found their rhythm.

Headmaster Qin addressed the new intake on the second morning. The assembly hall was deep in the Common District, old enough that the stone hummed under Jayde’s feet — centuries of accumulated essence in the walls, the ceiling, the cracked vaulted arches patched and re-patched by generations of Formation students who’d used the repairs as practice projects.

Qin stood on a raised platform that was really just a step, and he stood on it the way he did everything — as though the concept of formality was something he’d heard of once and decided not to pursue.

”Welcome to Obsidian Academy,” he said. His voice was mild. Conversational. The voice of someone discussing the weather with a neighbour over a fence. ”You are here because no other institution wanted you, because your families couldn’t afford better, because you were exiled from somewhere more prestigious, or — in very rare cases — because you chose to be. I find the latter category the most concerning.”

He let that settle. Some students laughed. Others didn’t.

”You’ve been told the terms. Debt, merit, ranking. You’ve read the handbook — or you haven’t, in which case the next few weeks will be educational in ways you didn’t anticipate. This week is orientation. You will rotate through all eight Academic Halls — Medicine, Inscription, Runology, Formation and Array, Beast Taming, Talisman, Refining, and Combat. Sample each. Find what suits you. At week’s end, you choose a primary hall and up to two minor specialisations.”

He paused. The mildness didn’t change. The eyes did.

”Choose poorly, and you waste years. Choose well, and you waste slightly fewer years.”

Standard institutional structure. Eight specialist tracks plus mandatory core curriculum. Centralised halls serving all five year-groups. Familiar architecture — different aesthetics, same engineering.

”Some of you,” Qin continued, ”have been asking about the Secret Realm. When it opens. What’s inside. How to prepare.” He produced a piece of paper from nowhere that Jayde could identify. Consulted it. ”The Secret Realm opens in six days. You will enter at dawn on the twenty-sixth of Ashwhisper.”

Six days. Less than a week of orientation, then straight into the trial.

”The realm predates the Sundering. An ancient training ground from an era when cultivation was considerably more lethal, and the people who practised it were considerably less interested in your comfort. Inside, you will find beasts, terrain, formation puzzles, and resource nodes — spirit herbs, beast cores, jade slips, mineral deposits. Everything you harvest will be collected and assessed at the end of the fourteen-day trial period. Your total haul determines your ranking.”

He folded the paper. It vanished.

”The realm does not care about your family name, your cultivation tier, or your feelings. It cares about what you collect, what you kill, and whether you survive long enough to bring it back. Top twenty thousand performers are accepted. The rest are not. You’ve heard this before. What you haven’t heard is what happens inside.”

The hall was very quiet.

”The realm is vast. Larger than any of you expect. The outer zones are manageable — common beasts, low-grade herbs, the kind of resources that every other applicant will be scrambling to collect. The deeper zones are more dangerous and more rewarding. The deepest zones...” He trailed off. Considered his words with the air of a man selecting from several options and choosing the least alarming. ”...contain things that predate our understanding of cultivation. Past students have found relics. Inheritances left by ancient cultivators who understood that the best teaching happens when there is no teacher.”

Pre-Sundering relics in an active training ground. Either they’re deliberately seeded to reward exploration, or the realm generates them independently. Either way — high-risk, high-reward zones exist beyond the standard resource gathering. The real competition isn’t in the outer zones.

”Those with eyes to see,” Qin said, his gaze sweeping the hall, ”may find more than they expect.”

His eyes landed on Jayde for a fraction of a second — a fraction that felt longer than it should have.

Was that directed at us?

(He looked right at us.)

Coincidence. Or not. File it.

”One important point — the Secret Realm seals all pet spaces upon entry. Contracted beasts will be sealed for the full fourteen days. You enter alone. Whatever you bring on your back is all you have.”

(Reiko’s in the Pavilion. That’s different from pet space — Isha’s formations should hold against spatial sealing. Should.)

Confirm with Isha before entry. Non-negotiable.

(And Takara can’t go into pet space at all. He’s not contracted. He’ll be here. Alone. For two weeks.)

”One final point.” Qin’s voice hadn’t changed. ”Attacking fellow students for their harvest is permitted. Theft is fair game. Ambushes are expected. Killing is forbidden — if you kill another applicant, I will find out, and you will not enjoy what follows. Cripple another student’s cultivation, and I will personally cripple yours before the day is out.”

”Everything else,” he said, in a tone identical to the enrollment official’s, ”goes.”

***

The week blurred.

Not in the way combat blurred — that was adrenaline compressing time into moments. This was the institutional blur, the settling-in period where every day felt identical until suddenly it didn’t.

Day two, Combat Hall. Basic sparring. Pairs, rotated. Jayde drew a boy with broad shoulders and a stance that was mostly enthusiasm.

She lost. Deliberately. Went down to a sweep she could have dodged in her sleep, hit the mat, got up, shook his hand. He looked pleased. She filed his technique — sloppy, strong, predictable — and moved on.

Cover maintenance. Entry Inferno-tempered doesn’t dominate sparring matches.

(It felt wrong.)

Winning would feel worse. Trust the process.

Day three, Formation and Array Hall. The instructor — a thin woman with ink-stained fingers and the particular intensity of someone who loved a subject nobody else cared about — drew a basic defensive matrix on the board and asked the class to identify the anchor points.

Jayde’s mind lit up.

It was engineering. Pure engineering. The formation matrix was a circuit — anchor points were load-bearing nodes, energy flows were current pathways, and the interaction between them followed principles that were different in execution from anything she’d studied before but identical in logic. She could see the entire structure. Could see where it was efficient and where it was redundant. Could see three modifications that would increase throughput by forty percent.

She raised her hand. Identified one anchor point. The easy one. Sat down.

Do not show everything. Do not show a fraction of everything. Show enough to be competent. Not enough to be interesting.

Day three, Medicine Hall. Eden’s territory. Jayde sat in the observation gallery and watched Eden work through a diagnostic exercise. The instructor presented a patient — a training dummy enchanted to simulate illness — and asked students to identify the condition.

Eden’s hands moved over the dummy with the steady precision of someone who had done this a thousand times. Not the tentative probing of a student learning. The sure, economical movements of someone remembering.

She identified the condition in thirty seconds. It took the next student four minutes. The instructor’s expression did something complicated.

She’s better than the instructor. Already. On day three.

(That’s a lot of talent for a village orphan.)

File it.

Day four, Refining Hall.

The forge hit her first. Not the heat — though it was considerable — but the sound. Metal singing under the hammer. The ring and hiss of heated steel meeting water. The low, continuous hum of essence being worked into raw materials by hands that understood the conversation between maker and made.

Something in her chest resonated. Not her Crucible Core — deeper than that. Something she didn’t have a name for yet.

Unusual reaction. No tactical relevance. File it.

(It feels like... recognition.)

We’ve never been in a forge.

(I know. That’s what’s strange.)

She signed up for Refining as her primary hall before the session was over. Formation and Array, and Runology as her minors.

Eden: Medicine primary. Talisman and Inscription minor.

Across the main plaza, the ranking boards carried the orientation sign-ups. Meiling: Combat Hall. Of course. The princess wanted to hit things. Jayde couldn’t entirely blame her — there was an honesty to combat that politics lacked — but the choice confirmed something about her priorities. She wanted power. The direct, visible kind. Behind her name, a cluster of others — her growing faction, all Combat Hall. Building numbers.

Combat Hall puts her in different class blocks. Less daily contact. More time to plan without proximity.

Noted. Not reassuring.

***

Evenings belonged to Eden.

They studied in the Grand Library — a cavernous space that smelled of old paper and the particular mustiness of knowledge that nobody had bothered to dust in a decade. Past the towering black columns at the entrance, rows of shelves receded into shadow, the older texts glowing faintly with preservation formations. Two girls at a corner table, books spread between them, sharing the comfortable silence of people who didn’t need to fill every moment with conversation.

It was... nice. The word felt insufficient, but there it was.

”The formation matrices in today’s lecture were interesting,” Eden said on the fourth evening, not looking up from a text on herbal compounding. ”Rudimentary, but the underlying theory’s sound. Someone, somewhere, understood the principles. They just didn’t have the tools to implement them properly.”

”Underlying theory.” ”Implement.” ”Principles.” Three domain-specific terms in two sentences. Unusual vocabulary for someone trained in a village. Consistent with previous observations.

Pattern forming. Not enough data to draw conclusions. Continue filing.

”You think the Academy’s behind?” Jayde asked.

”I think the Academy is working with what it has. Which is more than most places have, and less than it deserves.” Eden turned a page. ”The healing curriculum is fifty years out of date, the alchemy lab is using equipment that should be in a museum, and the formation theory instructor is the best teacher I’ve ever —” She stopped. Compressed her lips. ”— encountered.”

Verbal correction. Mid-sentence. Whatever she almost said, she redirected. Not the first time.

(She does that a lot.)

Yes. She does.

Jayde didn’t push. They went back to reading.

On the table between them, Takara slept on an open textbook. Or appeared to sleep. His ear twitched every time a page turned.

***

On day three, a girl from a neighbouring dormitory discovered Takara on Jayde’s shoulder and made a sound usually reserved for encountering baby animals. By day five, he’d acquired a second ribbon — pale blue, tied around his right ear by hands that did not ask permission — and Takara had been petted by no fewer than fourteen students, three instructors, and the mess hall cook, who saved him scraps of fish and called him ”little prince.”

He suffered. Magnificently.

He’d also started disappearing.

Not for long — an hour or two, always in the early morning before the dawn bell. Jayde woke on the fourth day to find his pillow empty and his warmth gone, and felt a spike of alarm that lasted exactly as long as it took him to reappear through the window, landing on her bunk with the silent precision of a cat who knew exactly where he’d been and had no intention of sharing.

”Where do you go?” she asked.

Mew.

By the fifth morning, it was routine. Takara vanished before dawn, explored — the rooftops, she assumed, or the courtyards, or whatever territory a small cat felt compelled to map — and returned before breakfast, settling onto her shoulder as though he’d never left. Cats did this. Cats explored. It was unremarkable.

She stopped worrying about it.

Meiling’s faction was growing. Jayde tracked it the way she tracked everything — obliquely, through peripheral vision and overheard conversations. Gold silk in the mess hall, surrounded by four, then six, then nine students who sat too close and laughed too loudly and watched Meiling with the particular attentiveness of people who’d chosen a horse to back. The former princess moved through the Common District like someone who’d been born to occupy space — chin up, voice carrying, her attendant Feng always half a step behind with his hands hidden in his sleeves.

She didn’t look at Jayde. That was worse than looking.

She’s building a faction. Day one. The desperate ones always move fastest.

(She’s still scared.)

Scared and organised. Bad combination.

***

Day seven. The eve of the Secret Realm.

After dinner, Jayde stopped by the mess hall. The cook — a broad woman named Huli whose forearms suggested she’d been stirring industrial-sized pots since before Jayde was born — was scraping the last of the evening’s rice into storage containers.

”Huli,” Jayde said. ”I need a favour.”

”The kitten.”

”Fourteen days. He can’t go into pet space — he’s not contracted. I need someone to feed him while I’m in the realm.”

Huli looked at Takara, who was sitting on Jayde’s shoulder with the expression of a creature who understood he was being discussed and was reserving judgement. The cook’s weathered face softened in the specific way it softened only for him.

”I’ll put scraps out by the kitchen door every morning and evening,” she said. ”Little prince knows where to find me.”

”Thank you. I’ll pay—”

”You’ll pay nothing.” Huli waved a ladle at her. ”Go survive your trial. The cat will eat better than you do.”

Takara’s ears rotated toward the cook. A small, dignified acknowledgment of terms.

***

Later. The dormitory. Packing.

Jayde moved through the process with the methodical efficiency of someone who’d packed for deployment more times than she could count. Rations — dried, compact, calorie-dense. Water flask. Basic medical supplies. Spare clothes. Blade.

Through the bond with Reiko — still distant, still turned inward. But different tonight. The pulse was faster. Closer. Whatever threshold he’d been approaching for the past week, it was near.

Isha.

I’m here.

The Secret Realm seals pet spaces. Will the Pavilion hold?

The Pavilion operates on different spatial principles than a standard pet space. The seal won’t affect it. A pause. I’ve already verified. Reiko is safe. Yinxin is safe. The wyrmlings are safe.

(Of course, she already checked.)

Go. Survive. Come back stronger.

(Wake up soon, Reiko.)

The bond pulsed. Once. Stronger than it had been in days.

Takara was on the pillow. His blue eyes watched her in the dark — bright, steady, the look of a cat who was not drowsy and not relaxed and not remotely as small as he appeared.

”Fourteen days,” she said softly. ”Huli will feed you. Stay out of trouble. Don’t antagonise Meiling’s people.”

Mew.

”I mean it.”

Mew.

She scratched behind his ear — the one without a ribbon, the ribbon-free territory that was shrinking daily — and turned back to her pack. Checked the straps. Tightened the closure. Set it on her bunk shelf, open, ready for morning.

Then she lay on the thin mattress and closed her eyes.

She didn’t see the small white shape drop silently from the pillow. Didn’t hear the soft pad of paws across the stone shelf. Didn’t notice the slight shift in weight as something very small, very determined, and very much not staying behind settled into the bottom of her open pack and arranged itself beneath her spare shirt with the tactical precision of a creature who had been infiltrating more heavily guarded positions than a teenager’s backpack for five thousand years.

The midnight bell tolled. Twelve notes. Deep and resonant, settling into stone.

Jayde Ashford slept.

In her pack, two blue eyes watched the ceiling.

***

Dawn. The bell. The morning of the Secret Realm.

Jayde reached for the pillow. Empty. Warm where he’d been, but empty.

(He’s exploring. He does this.)

She didn’t think twice about it. Five mornings out of seven, Takara vanished before the bell and came back before breakfast. He’d be on her bunk when she returned in fourteen days, annoyed about the ribbons, smelling like fish scraps from Huli’s kitchen door.

She shouldered her pack — heavier than expected, but she’d packed dense — and walked out of the dormitory into the cold grey morning.

And far above the Academy, on a rooftop that offered unobstructed sight lines to the Year One dormitory’s women’s wing, a silver Lightning Panthera received a communication that raised several questions.

[Commander? She told you to stay behind.]

[Canirr. Maintain perimeter positions until we emerge.]

[We, sir?]

[Did I stutter?]

[No, Commander. ...Amaya says to be careful.]

[Tell Amaya I have been doing this since before her grandmother’s grandmother was born.]

[She says that’s why she worries.]
