Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 246: Chapter 241: The Crossing

Location: Gateway Site → Demon Realm → Temple of Light

Date/Time: Void Day 3 → 1 Emberrise, 9939 AZI

Realm: Mid Realm → Demon Realm → High Realm

The gateway opened at dawn.

Not with a sound — with a silence. The kind of silence that happens when the world holds its breath, when the air itself becomes aware that something fundamental is changing. Brannick placed his massive hands on the activation matrix and pushed, and the arch of metal and crystal flared with light that was neither warm nor cold but something else entirely — the light of a door opening between things that were never meant to be connected.

The silence lasted three heartbeats.

Then the gateway resolved. The arch filled with — not light, not darkness. A threshold. A space between spaces that shimmered like heat haze over desert stone, and through it, visible as though through water, the demon realm.

Eternal twilight. Purple sky. Twin moons hanging low on a horizon that glowed with the amber of a sun that had never quite risen and never quite set.

Eight hundred thousand people stared at it.

”Go,” Brannick said.

***

The first through were the sick and the elderly.

Vaelith’s quintet led them — five ancient Vor’shal warriors, each one a whisper from death, carrying people who couldn’t walk through a door between worlds with the careful tenderness of men who understood that fragility was not weakness. Thalos had an elder on each arm. Korvash and Morvain moved in tandem, a stretcher slung between them bearing a woman too ill to lift her head. Dravek carried three children — one on each hip, one clinging to his back with the fierce grip of a four-year-old who’d been told to hold tight and was holding with everything she had. Sethrak walked the line, his faded white hair catching the gateway’s light, steadying the ones who faltered.

Behind the Vor’shal came Vaelith, emerald robes shimmering, Vorketh a wall of bronze beside her. The ancient healer moved through the crowd like water, her Shan’keth blazing with diagnostic light, her hands touching foreheads and wrists and shoulders — checking, steadying, easing the pain of people who were about to walk out of the only world they’d ever known.

”Steady breaths,” she told a woman clutching a newborn. ”The crossing is painless. You’ll feel a moment of cold, then warmth. The child won’t even wake.”

The woman nodded. Tears on her face. Walked through.

Vorketh walked beside his mate. The massive warrior’s arms were occupied — a child in the crook of each elbow, both under five, both asleep against his chest. He’d been gathering the smallest and the weakest since before dawn, scooping them up without being asked because children were light and his arms were empty and forty thousand years of warrior’s instinct had found, in this valley, that the thing most worth protecting weighed less than his blade.

He carried them through the gateway with the same expression he wore into battle — absolute focus, absolute commitment, absolute refusal to let anything under his protection come to harm.

***

The Kael’thoren moved like dark water.

A hundred elite demon warriors, each one capable of tearing through battlefields, distributed themselves through the exodus with the precision of a military operation that had been planned to the minute. They carried the lame, the blind, the very old. They lifted wagons over rough ground. They formed living walls around the densest sections of the crowd, channelling the flow, preventing crush, keeping the line moving at the pace the gateway demanded.

They said nothing. They didn’t need to. A hundred warriors trained for millennia in the art of war had discovered, over ten days in this valley, that the logistics of saving lives used the same discipline as the logistics of taking them. Formation. Timing. Awareness. The ability to see where pressure was building and relieve it before it broke.

A Kael’thoren warrior — crimson-haired, molten-eyed, built like a siege engine — lifted a half-dwarven elder onto his back and walked him through the gateway with the same matter-of-fact efficiency he might have used to move a supply crate. The elder clung to the demon’s armored shoulders and stared at the purple sky of the demon realm with eyes that had never seen anything beyond the primordial forest.

”It’s real,” the elder whispered.

The warrior set him down gently on demon soil. Turned back. Went through. Picked up the next one.

By the third hour, the flow had found its rhythm.

Sixty abreast at the widest point — Brannick’s modifications had pushed the gateway beyond its original specifications, and the mastersmith stood at the activation matrix like a conductor at an orchestra, his massive hands making constant micro-adjustments to the stabilisation field. His dark eyes never left the arch’s structural readings. Sweat beaded on his brow despite the Void Day cold.

Lyria’s quintet held the gateway’s flanks. Kael’vor anchored the right side — literally anchored, his Terracore essence sunk into the bedrock beneath his feet, his massive frame an immovable marker that the crowd flowed around like a river around stone. The twins held the left — Zharek’s Inferno warmth easing the chill for the thousands passing within arm’s reach, Tharek’s Torrent monitoring the air pressure inside the gateway for any signs of instability. Drazhen ranged behind the line, his steel-silver eyes cataloguing every face, every stumble, every potential problem. Sorvak was somewhere. He was always somewhere.

Voresh stood with Lyria at the gateway’s mouth.

Not guarding. Witnessing.

Eight hundred thousand people walking out of one world and into another. Families holding hands. Children on shoulders. Elders leaning on the young. Wagons loaded with everything that mattered — tools, seeds, books, the blanket a grandmother had woven, the carved toy a father had made, the packet of letters from someone who’d died years ago but whose words were still worth carrying.

They came in rivers. They left in rivers.

And between one world and the next, in the liminal space of the Void Days — the time between times, the gap between the old year’s death and the new year’s birth — they became something else. Not refugees. Not outcasts. Not the forgotten mixed-breed communities of the primordial forests.

Something new. Something that hadn’t existed before this moment.

A people.

***

Hour six.

”We’re behind,” Torvald said. His face was grey. His voice was steady. ”The northern column arrived late — trail blockage, had to reroute. We’ve got roughly a hundred and twenty thousand still in staging.”

”How much time?” Voresh asked.

”Two hours. At the current pace, we’ll clear about a hundred thousand. Twenty thousand short.”

Voresh looked at the Kael’thoren commander. The demon warrior’s eyes were already calculating.

”Pull fifty warriors from the perimeter,” the commander said. ”Full carry speed. Six trips per warrior, four people per trip. That’s twelve hundred per cycle, fifteen minutes per cycle. In two hours—”

”Eighteen thousand,” Voresh finished. ”Close.”

”Close is alive,” the commander said. ”Near enough.”

The Kael’thoren redistributed. Fifty warriors peeled off from perimeter duty and became a transport unit — sprinting between the staging area and the gateway at speeds that made the mixed-breed refugees gasp, carrying elders and children and the injured with the efficient care of professionals who’d spent ten days learning that gentleness and speed weren’t mutually exclusive.

Hessa stood at the staging line’s end, counting heads. Iron-grey hair. Vomit-stained sleeve from the conclave she’d never bothered to wash. Selka on her hip, because the girl refused to be put down, and Hessa refused to put her down.

”Four hundred and twelve through since I started counting,” she reported to Torvald. ”Per minute. We’ll make it.”

”You’re sure?”

”I can count, Torvald.”

They’d make it.

***

Hour eight.

The last column moved through.

Gareth’s settlement — Fernhollow, the community that had travelled the furthest, the one whose elder had left sixty children with a skeleton force because signal fires said emergency. They came through at a run, not because they were panicking but because Gareth had organised his people into a disciplined fast-march and the man knew how to move a community when moving was life.

The Kael’thoren swept behind them, scooping up stragglers. Three warriors carried the last stretcher cases. Two more ran the final perimeter, checking for anyone left behind.

”Clear,” Sorvak’s voice came through the common path. From where, no one knew. He was always somewhere. ”Both sides clear.”

Brannick’s hands trembled on the activation matrix. Eight hours of continuous stabilisation. His essence was nearly spent — the mixed-breed mastersmith who’d held a door between worlds open through nothing but will and eight thousand years of craftsmanship.

”Everyone through?” he asked.

”Everyone through,” Voresh confirmed.

Lyria stood on demon soil. She’d crossed an hour ago — Voresh had insisted, and she hadn’t argued because the bond between them was screaming with the need to get her through, to put her somewhere safe, somewhere Sharlin couldn’t reach. She stood under an alien sky and watched the last of her people stumble out of the gateway onto ground that smelled different, felt different, existed in a realm where the light was eternal twilight, and the moons hung in pairs.

Brannick was the last.

The old mastersmith stepped through the gateway, turned to face it from the demon side, and pulled.

Not the activation matrix. Something else. Something built into the gateway’s structure that only the builder knew about — a failsafe, a self-destruct, a final clause in the architecture of salvation.

The gateway screamed.

Not sound — essence. The metal and crystal framework convulsed, the stabilisation matrices shattering in a cascade of released energy that blazed white and terrible against the demon realm’s purple sky. The arch buckled, twisted, and collapsed inward — not falling but consuming itself, every component designed to destroy every other component the moment the kill switch was triggered.

In thirty seconds, the gateway was gone. Not rubble. Gone. Reduced to dust and dispersed essence, leaving nothing but scorched earth where a door between worlds had stood.

No way back.

No way for anyone to follow.

Brannick stood on demon soil with dust on his shoulders and the last eight thousand years of hiding written in the lines of his face, and he watched the space where the gateway had been with an expression that held grief and relief in equal measure.

”Done,” he said.

Behind him, eight hundred thousand people stood under an alien sky and breathed air that tasted of a world they’d never seen.

And in the east — impossible, beautiful, breaking every metaphor Lyria had ever known — the eternal twilight of the demon realm brightened.

Not dawn. The demon realm didn’t have dawn.

But the twin moons caught the light differently, or the sky shifted some impossible shade warmer, or something in the essence of this place responded to the presence of six hundred women with demon blood and over a hundred girls with green-gold eyes, and for one breathless moment, the twilight looked less like ending and more like beginning.

Void Day 3. The time between times.

Tomorrow would be Emberrise. The first day of a new year.

Lyria took Voresh’s hand. He held it the way he always held it — carefully, precisely, as though she were something he was terrified of breaking.

”We made it,” she said.

His copper eyes were bright. Not tarnished. Not fading. Three leaves on a vor’kesh that had held one when she’d met him, growing stronger with every strand of bond between them.

”Yes,” he said. ”We did.”
