Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 240: Chapter 235: The King’s Blood

Location: Brannick’s Forge — Hidden Village

Date/Time: 25-26 Ashwhisper, 9938 AZI

Realm: Mid Realm

Ren’s image appeared at midnight.

Not an illusion. Not a projection of light and shadow. Voresh opened the common path wide — wider than Lyria had felt before, a deep channel of essence connecting the clearing outside Brannick’s forge to the demon realm with an intimacy that made the air vibrate. Through that channel, carried on the shared consciousness that linked demon to demon across realms, came the king.

Not physically. But close enough.

The image was translucent, rendered in shades of deep purple and copper essence that hung in the air like a painting made of light. But the details were precise. The raven-black hair cascading past broad shoulders. The jade-white skin with its faint luminescence. The high cheekbones, the angular jaw.

And the eyes. Purple. Storm-lit. Burning with an intensity that made the forge feel smaller.

Lyria had seen him before — in visions, in the prophetic sight that had shown her the demon battlefield and the king standing at the front of his people with soulblades drawn. But seeing him through the common path, rendered in the essence of a living connection rather than the silver-white of prophecy, was different. More immediate. More real. He was beautiful in the way a blade was beautiful — dangerous, purposeful, with an edge that promised to cut.

He was also furious.

Not the hot, explosive fury she’d felt through the bond when Voresh relayed her vision. This was cold. Compressed. The fury of a king who’d been given information that demanded action and was already twelve steps ahead of the conversation.

”Show me,” Ren said. His voice carried through the common path with perfect clarity — deep, resonant, containing a command presence that made Lyria understand why eight million demons followed this man. ”Everything.”

Voresh opened the channel further. Through it flowed the images that the scouting party had gathered during their day in the hidden village — the terraced streets, the children, the women with their uncovered vines, the couples, the homes built with eight thousand years of accumulated care. Vaelith’s census data accompanied the images, transmitted through the common path with the clinical precision of a report.

The translucent image of Ren went very still.

Lyria watched his face. Watched the fury shift into something else — something that looked like the expression of a man who’d spent ten thousand years watching his race die and had just been shown a room full of the living.

”Three hundred truemated couples,” he said. The words came out carefully. Controlled. As though speaking too quickly might break something. ”Six hundred children. Over a hundred female demon children.”

”Confirmed,” Vaelith said. Her voice carried the same careful control. ”And nearly six hundred adult women with demon heritage sufficient for Shan’keth manifestation. Many of them are potential truemates, Ren. The bloodlines are strong.”

The king closed his eyes. One breath. Two.

When he opened them, they were wet.

He didn’t bother hiding it. Didn’t brush the tears away or compress his expression into something harder. He stood in the translucent space between realms and let himself feel what every demon would feel when they learned of this — the grief and the hope, tangled together, inseparable, each one making the other sharper.

”They will be protected,” he said. ”All of them. Every man, woman, and child in that village will have the full protection of the demon crown. The blood oath extends to them the moment they accept it.” His purple gaze found Brannick, who stood at the edge of the forge with his arms crossed, watching the demon king with the unimpressed assessment of a man who’d outlived his share of monarchs. ”Mastersmith. You’ve kept them alive for eight thousand years. That debt cannot be repaid.”

Brannick grunted. ”Don’t want repayment. Want them safe. That’s the debt you owe.”

”Then it will be paid.” Ren’s image turned, taking in the forge, the tools, the valley beyond. His gaze lingered on details — the arrangement of the village, the quality of the wards, the evidence of a community that had sustained itself in secret for millennia.

Then he looked at Brannick again. And stopped.

The old mastersmith was staring at him.

Not with the unimpressed assessment he’d worn since the image appeared. Something different. His dark eyes had gone wide — wide for someone with his stoic bearing, which wasn’t very wide at all, but on Brannick’s stone-carved face, it was the equivalent of a scream.

”Turn your head,” Brannick said.

Ren’s image frowned.

”To the left. Slowly.”

The king complied. His translucent profile turned — the angular jaw, the high cheekbones, the cascade of raven-black hair.

Brannick sat down heavily on his workbench. His forge-scarred hands gripped the edge.

”By every god that ever lived,” the mastersmith breathed. ”You look like him.”

The clearing went silent.

”Like whom?” Ren’s voice had gone very quiet. The kind of quiet that preceded earthquakes.

”The male. From the special pair. Sharlin’s father’s most prized subjects — the ones kept in the deeper space, the ones we couldn’t reach.” Brannick’s knuckles were white on the workbench edge. ”I saw him — many times, when Sharlin’s father paraded them through our space. His face. His build. The way he held himself. Like he was carrying the weight of the world and refusing to set it down.”

He looked at Ren’s image with the expression of a man assembling pieces of a puzzle he’d held for eight thousand years.

”You share features. The jaw. The cheekbones. The bearing. That face is his.” Brannick paused. His eyes narrowed, studying the projection with the precision of a craftsman examining fine detail. ”But your eyes — you’ve got his purple, yes. Same colour exactly. But the shape...” Something shifted in his expression. ”The shape of your eyes is hers. His mate’s. He had narrow eyes, sharp. Predator’s eyes. Yours are wider. Deeper set. That’s her.”

Ren’s image had gone absolutely still. Not the stillness of control. The stillness of a man hearing something that rearranged the architecture of his own history.

”My father,” Ren said, ”was Salroch d’Aar. The tyrant I killed to save my people.”

”I don’t know what the tyrant looked like,” Brannick said. ”Never saw him. Never left these forests. But I know what the special pair looked like, because I saw them with my own eyes, year after year, while Sharlin’s father walked them through our space like trophies.” His dark eyes held the king’s purple ones across the gap between realms. ”And you look like their child.”

Silence.

”Your mother?” Brannick asked.

Something flickered across Ren’s translucent features — old, deep, carefully buried. ”My mother was Salroch’s chosen mate. Not his truemate — a chosen bond. She died giving birth to me. Salroch survived because it wasn’t a true bond.”

”A chosen mate who died in childbirth,” Brannick repeated. ”Convenient.”

The word hung in the forge like the ring of a struck anvil.

Vaelith spoke. Her voice was very quiet, very precise — the voice of an eighteen-thousand-year-old healer who understood the implications of what was being suggested and was following the thread to its end regardless of where it led.

”Ren. If the special pair were held in a deeper space — if they produced a child during their captivity — and if Sharlin’s father used that child as leverage or as a gift to a useful ally—”

”A child taken from them,” Brannick said. ”Given to a king. Raised as his own son. An heir with bloodlines powerful enough to satisfy any ambition — because the special pair’s bloodlines were the strongest Sharlin’s father had ever encountered. That’s why they were special.”

”This is speculation,” Kael’vor said from the doorway. But his voice lacked conviction.

”It’s a mastersmith’s observation,” Brannick corrected. ”I’ve spent eight thousand years looking at fine detail. I don’t guess. I see what’s there.” He turned back to Ren’s image. ”I could be wrong. I’ve been wrong before — not often, but it happens. But your face is his face. And your eyes are shaped like hers. And if I’m right, then the tyrant you killed wasn’t your father. And the woman who died giving birth to you wasn’t your mother. Your real parents were prisoners in Sharlin’s father’s pocket dimension, and I don’t know if they’re alive or dead or something worse.”

Ren stood in the translucent space between realms, and Lyria watched something happen to his face that she’d never seen in any vision — the expression of a man whose entire understanding of himself was cracking along fault lines he hadn’t known existed. The tyrant he’d killed to save his people. The patricide that had defined ten thousand years of his reign. The guilt he carried for the necessary murder of his own father.

What if it wasn’t his father?

What if the monster he’d killed had stolen him from the people who loved him?

The silence stretched until it hummed.

”This changes nothing that matters right now.” Ren’s voice cut through — not harsh, but absolute. The voice of a king who understood that some truths needed time and others needed action, and the wisdom was knowing which was which. ”Eight hundred thousand people need sanctuary. A gateway needs building. A genocide needs preventing.”

He looked at Brannick. Something passed between them — the demon king and the mastersmith who’d survived a program designed to break him, separated by realms and species and eight thousand years of hidden history, connected by a truth that was only beginning to unfold.

”We’ll discuss this,” Ren said. ”When everyone is safe.”

Brannick nodded. Once. The nod of a craftsman accepting a promise, weighing it against the metal of the man who made it, and finding it — for now — sufficient.

The gateway construction began at dawn.

Ren sent engineers through the common path — not physically, not yet, but instructions. Schematics. The precise specifications for a temporary realm-bridge capable of sustaining transit for eight hours across the barrier between the Mid Realm and demon territory. The construction would require resources that the hidden village had been stockpiling for millennia — essence crystals, stabilisation ores, anchor metals — and the expertise of a mastersmith who’d spent eight thousand years perfecting the art of building things that weren’t supposed to exist.

Brannick studied the schematics with the critical eye of a craftsman evaluating another craftsman’s work. ”Your engineers are good,” he said grudgingly. ”Not as good as they think they are, but good. I can improve the stabilisation matrix — reduce the power draw by thirty per cent. That gives us a wider aperture.”

Voresh relayed the modifications. Ren’s engineers argued. Brannick was right. They conceded.

Work began.

The quintet threw themselves into the physical labour — Kael’vor shaping stone anchor points from the bedrock with fifteen thousand years of Terracore mastery, Drazhen forging metal framework components from raw ore, the twins heating and cooling structural elements with the precision that came from eight thousand years of fighting side by side. Sorvak coordinated logistics, moving materials through the forest paths with an efficiency that Torvald watched with grudging admiration.

The mixed-breed communities mobilised. The signal fires blazed again — not emergency protocol this time, but evacuation protocol. A different pattern, a different meaning: Move. Now. Converge on the gateway site. Bring everything you can carry and everyone who can walk.

Eight hundred thousand people. Ten days.

The runners went out at dawn. By noon, the first acknowledgments were coming back — settlement after settlement confirming receipt, confirming preparation, confirming that they were breaking camp and beginning the march.

Lyria stood at the edge of the hidden village and watched the work begin. The sound of hammers on metal rang through the valley — Brannick at his forge, shaping components for a gateway that would save or doom every person she’d ever known. The sound of essence humming filled the air as the quintet worked, ancient power bent to desperate purpose. And beneath it all, the sound of children playing in the terraced streets, unaware that the world they’d been born into was about to change forever.

Voresh stood beside her. His wings were fully retracted — there was work to do, and copper membranes were impractical when hauling stone.

”Ten days,” Lyria said.

”Ten days,” Voresh confirmed.

She looked at the gateway site — a cleared space at the valley’s eastern edge, where Kael’vor was already sinking anchor points into the bedrock with methodical precision. In five days, a door between realms would stand there. In ten, eight hundred thousand people would walk through it.

If everything went right.

”And if it doesn’t?” she asked. Not the prophetic voice. Just a girl. Fourteen years old and carrying the weight of a population on shoulders that had barely finished growing.

Voresh’s copper eyes found hers. Bright. Not tarnished. The leaves on his vor’kesh — three of them now, growing stronger with every strand of bond that formed between them — rustled in an essence breeze that only demons could feel.

”Then we fight,” he said. ”And we die fighting. Which is more than most demons have been able to say in ten thousand years.”

He paused.

”But it will go right. Because you saw it happening, and you decided it wouldn’t. And in my experience, Lyria —” the ghost of a smile, the one she looked for, the one she’d started to need — ”very few forces in this world are as stubborn as a fourteen-year-old prophetess who’s decided the future needs correcting.”

Lyria almost laughed. Almost. The sound caught in her chest, tangled with fear and exhaustion and the persistent, unreasonable warmth that the bond kept sending her way.

Instead, she reached out and took his hand.

Not through the bond. Not through essence or prophecy or the thread that connected their souls across the distance between mortal and immortal.

Just her hand. In his. Small and warm and deliberate.

Voresh went very still. His copper eyes widened — fractionally, the way only someone watching for it would notice. His fingers closed around hers with the careful precision of a man handling something he was terrified of breaking.

They stood at the edge of the hidden village and watched the work begin, hand in hand, while behind them the clock counted down toward a future that a prophetess had decided to rewrite.

Ten days.

It would have to be enough.
