Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 229: Chapter 224: The Rival

Location: Eastern Trade Road / Academy Approach

Date/Time: 15 Ashwhisper, 9938 AZI

Realm: Lower Realm

The caravan had doubled in size.

What had started as twelve wagons and forty-odd souls straggling through Ironspine Pass had become a proper column — twenty-eight wagons now, nearly a hundred people, strung along the Eastern Trade Road like beads on a thread that got longer every time they passed through a town. Most of the newcomers were young. Academy-bound, judging by the cultivation manuals clutched in white-knuckled hands and the wide-eyed expressions of teenagers who’d never been more than a day’s walk from home.

Tactical note: column has lost cohesion. Travel speed reduced by thirty percent. Defensive capability marginally improved by additional bodies, significantly degraded by lack of discipline. Approximately sixty percent of new arrivals are below Flamewrought tier. Liabilities in combat.

(They’re just kids going to school.)

Yes. That too.

Jayde walked beside the lead wagon, her stride easy, her brown-eyed gaze cataloguing faces with the automatic precision of someone who’d spent sixty years learning that the person you didn’t notice was the one who killed you. Black hair pulled back. Travel-worn clothes. The disguise artifact doing its work — making her forgettable, unremarkable, one more frontier orphan in a stream of aspiring students flowing toward Obsidian Academy like water toward a drain.

Eden fell into step beside her, carrying a leather satchel she’d packed with medical supplies scavenged from three different waystations. The girl moved like someone who’d learned early that taking up space invited attention, and attention invited pain. Small, compact, eyes too old for her face.

Posture analysis: habitual minimization of physical presence. Consistent with prolonged environmental threat during formative years. Subject is unconsciously maintaining low profile even in neutral territory.

(She does the same thing I do.)

Noted.

”Twelve new ones from Millbrook,” Eden said, falling into their comfortable rhythm of observation. ”Six from Redwater. Four from that farming village — what was it?”

”Stonehaven.”

”Stonehaven. Three of those are siblings — the tall ones with the matching jaw. Father’s a blacksmith, mother’s mid-Flamewrought. They’ve been cultivating iron-supplemented Torrent techniques.”

Jayde glanced at her. ”You got all that from watching them join the caravan?”

”The calluses on their hands are forge-pattern, not farm-pattern. Their Torrent signatures have a metallic undertone — I can feel it when I extend my awareness. And they finish each other’s sentences.” Eden adjusted her satchel strap. ”Also, the middle one told me while I was treating his blisters.”

(She’s good.)

Observational skills consistent with advanced medical training. Interesting in someone her age.

In the wagon behind them, Reiko breathed his slow, deep breaths of ongoing evolution. Through the bond, his presence pulsed — distant but steady, wrapped around something vast and ancient that was reshaping him from the inside out. Four days since he’d swallowed the corrupted beast core. Four days of unconsciousness, of essence signatures reorganizing twice, three times, settling into patterns that Isha called ”primordial integration” and Jayde called ”terrifying.”

On Jayde’s shoulder, Takara’s weight was negligible. The white kitten sat with the boneless contentment of something genuinely tiny and helpless, sky-blue-tipped ears swiveled forward, large blue eyes half-closed against the afternoon sun.

[Status report,] Takara sent through the mental link.

[All clear, Commander.] Canirr’s response was professionally even. As always. [Twelve new arrivals since dawn. No essence signatures above Blazecrowned. One mid-tier concealment among the merchants — probably smuggling, not a threat to the principal. The noble’s palanquin has four guards, two competent, two decorative.]

[Noble’s palanquin?]

[Arrived an hour ago. Eastern road junction. Closed curtains, silks, four attendants. They’ve been keeping a distance from the main column.]

Takara’s ear twitched. The movement was involuntary, a reflexive response to new intelligence that manifested as something achingly, humiliatingly adorable.

Jayde noticed. Of course, she noticed.

”You’re such a good boy,” she murmured, scratching behind his ear.

I am five thousand years old. I have commanded armies. I have—

He purred. Involuntarily. The vibration started in his chest before his dignity could intervene, and once started, it couldn’t be stopped without breaking cover.

[Commander?] Amaya’s mental voice dripped with barely contained delight. [Are you... purring?]

[Report on the palanquin, or I will reassign you to latrine surveillance.]

[The palanquin contains a young female, mid-Flamewrought, Radiance primary. Clothing suggests Temple of Light affiliation. Deportment suggests she’d rather be anywhere else. Also, you’re still purring.]

[Latrine surveillance. Immediately.]

[Acknowledged, Commander. Purring noted for the record.]

***

The noble’s palanquin joined them properly at the next waystation.

Not joined, exactly. Inserted itself. The four carriers set the conveyance down at the head of the column — ahead of Gareth, ahead of the lead wagon, ahead of everyone — with the casual presumption of someone who had never in their life been told to wait their turn.

The curtains parted.

Assessment: Female. Sixteen to seventeen. Radiance cultivator, mid-Flamewrought — suppressed signature but not well enough. Carrying at least three defensive artifacts. Posture screams noble birth. Expression screams resentment.

The girl who stepped out was tall for her age — five-eight, five-nine — with the porcelain skin and rigid deportment of someone raised in a household where slouching was a capital offense. Black hair pulled into an elaborate arrangement that had probably taken a servant forty minutes. Robes of pale gold silk, cut in the Temple of Light style that Jayde recognized from Pavilion archives — high collar, flowing sleeves, the subtle radiance-threaded embroidery that cost more than most frontier families earned in a lifetime.

But the silk was wrong.

Not dirty — maintained with obsessive care. Wrong in the way it hung. Too new in some places, repaired in others. The embroidery pattern was Temple, but the thread count was Lower Realm — a copy, not the original. And the robes themselves lacked the divine blessing that genuine Temple garments carried, the faint luminous quality that came from being made in the Radiant Realm’s workshops.

Conclusion: real noble, real Temple background, but equipped with imitations. Either fallen from favor or cut off from resources. Interesting.

”That’s a Temple of Light seal,” Eden said quietly. Her voice had gone flat in a way Jayde was learning to recognize — the tone of someone who’d seen what the Temple did and had opinions about it.

”Temple noble going to Obsidian Academy.” Jayde watched the girl survey the caravan with an expression of such thorough contempt that it had to be practiced. ”That doesn’t happen unless something went very wrong.”

”No. It doesn’t.”

The girl’s gaze swept the column. Dismissed the merchants. Dismissed the farmers’ children. Dismissed the scholar with the combat-trained posture and the road-worn guards. Landed on Jayde and Eden — two unaffiliated girls traveling without family escort — and stayed.

Not curiosity. Evaluation.

Threat assessment: Low physical, moderate political. Temple connections are double-edged — useful or dangerous depending on whether she’s running FROM the Temple or still considers herself part of it.

The girl’s attendant — a thin, anxious man with the permanent wince of someone whose job security depended on a teenager’s mood — hurried forward.

”Make way, please! Princess Meiling of the Third Light requires passage to Obsidian Academy. She will be traveling with your column. Her Highness requires the lead position and—”

”She can take the rear,” Gareth said, without looking up from the wagon axle he was inspecting. The old guard had survived a beast tide three days ago. His tolerance for protocol had died somewhere in Ironspine Pass. ”Same as everyone else.”

The attendant’s wince deepened. He glanced back at Meiling, whose expression could have etched glass.

”You,” she said. Not to Gareth. To Jayde. Her voice carried the precise, clipped diction of someone educated in the Radiant Realm’s finest institutions, underlaid with something harder. ”What are you staring at?”

Standard dominance establishment. Targeting the perceived weakest member of a visible social group. Textbook.

(She picked the wrong target.)

Let it go. Cover maintenance takes priority over ego.

”Nothing,” Jayde said, and turned away.

She felt the girl’s stare bore into her back. The weight of it was familiar — she’d been on the receiving end of that particular flavor of aristocratic disdain in two different lifetimes. The kind that needed someone beneath it to feel tall.

Behind her, the attendant was stammering apologies. Meiling cut him off with a word sharp enough to draw blood.

Takara’s ear rotated toward the exchange.

[The noble female has elevated cortisol markers,] Canirr reported. [Sustained stress. Not from travel. The pattern suggests chronic anxiety, shame response, and displaced aggression.]

[She’s not a threat,] Takara decided. [She’s a liability. Different problem.]

***

The small cruelties started within hours.

Meiling’s attendant — whose name, Jayde learned, was Feng — was sent to the supply wagon with instructions to acquire ”appropriate provisions.” What he returned with was inadequate, and what followed was a dressing-down delivered at a volume calculated to ensure every student within earshot heard exactly how incompetent the servant was and, by extension, how far beneath a Third Light Princess the entire caravan’s standards fell.

Then the comments began.

Not to Jayde directly. To Feng, in earshot. ”Even the commoners here carry blades. Like children playing soldiers.” A pause, calibrated. ”Though I suppose when one has nothing else, one clings to whatever makes one feel important.”

To another attendant, loud enough: ”The healer girl — the small one with the satchel. Self-taught, I’m told. How delightful. I’m sure her patients survive occasionally.”

And later, passing the wagon where Reiko lay unconscious: ”Is that beast alive or dead? Someone should check. It smells.”

Jayde felt her jaw tighten. Through the bond, Reiko was oblivious — deep in his cocoon of evolution, unreachable — but the principle of the thing burned.

Don’t. She wants a reaction. Reactions are ammunition.

(I know. I know that. But—)

But nothing. Cover first. Always cover first.

Eden, to her credit, didn’t react either. But that evening, sitting on the wagon tailgate they’d claimed as their spot — shoulder to shoulder, sharing dried fruit and the comfortable silence of two people who didn’t need to fill every moment with words — she said it.

”She lost her spot at the Temple Academy in the Mid Realm.”

Jayde looked at her.

”I asked Feng while I was wrapping his blisters. He has seven of them, by the way, and she hasn’t let him treat a single one.” Eden’s voice was steady and clinical. ”Meiling was supposed to attend the Temple’s own academy — it’s the most prestigious in the Radiant Realm. Placement was secured since birth. Then, three months ago, the Temple reallocated her position. No explanation. Just — gone. Reassigned to Obsidian.”

”Obsidian’s not exactly a punishment posting.”

”It is if you’re Temple nobility. Obsidian’s in the Lower Realm. To someone like her, that’s exile. Her family disowned her two weeks later.” Eden paused. ”Not formally. They just... stopped answering messages. Stopped sending money. Feng says the robes she’s wearing are the only Temple silks she has left. She’s been maintaining them herself.”

Psychological profile update: displaced elite. Loss of status, family support, and peer group within a three-month window. Classic radicalization pattern.

”She’s dangerous,” Eden said, ”because she’s desperate.”

Jayde waited.

”Desperate people do terrible things.” Eden’s dark eyes were distant. ”I’ve seen it. When someone loses everything they thought defined them, they either rebuild or they burn down whatever’s left. She hasn’t decided which yet.”

Accurate assessment. File accordingly.

(She sounds like she’s talking from experience.)

She is. And so are you.

Somewhere behind them, Takara had been relocated from Jayde’s shoulder to a nest of blankets in the supply wagon, where one of the blacksmith’s daughters had wrapped him in a scarf and was feeding him dried fish. He accepted this indignity because the position gave him a clear sightline to both the palanquin and the rear guard.

[Commander, the noble’s guard rotation is sloppy,] Prota reported. [Two-hour shifts, no overlap. If someone wanted to get to her, they could.]

[Not our problem.]

[Understood. Just noting that someone raised in the Temple’s protection should have better security awareness.]

[She was probably never told how her safety worked. Only that it existed. Now it doesn’t, and she doesn’t know what she’s missing.]

Takara nibbled the dried fish. It was, he was forced to admit, excellent.

[Commander,] Amaya’s voice, warm with amusement. [Are you eating from a child’s hand?]

[I am maintaining cover.]

[You’re purring again.]

He wasn’t. He absolutely wasn’t. That was a respiratory artifact of the transformation’s compression of his thoracic—

He was purring.

I hate everything.

***

The incident happened on the fourth day.

The caravan had stopped at a stream crossing to water the horses. Students clustered in loose groups — the noble-born children gravitating toward each other with the magnetic certainty of shared privilege, the commoners keeping a wary distance, the merchants’ children occupying the uncertain middle ground of money without lineage.

Feng was at the stream, filling water skins. His blisters had burst on the second day. Eden had treated them — the attendant had nearly wept with gratitude — but they’d reopened from the constant labor of attending to Meiling’s every need.

Jayde watched from the wagon while checking Reiko’s breathing. Steady. Deep. The faint pulse of reorganizing essence beneath his fur, like a second heartbeat learning a new rhythm.

[Movement,] Suki sent. [The noble. Approaching the servant at the stream.]

Meiling walked with the precision of someone who had been taught to make every movement a statement. She stopped three feet behind Feng, who was kneeling at the water’s edge with his back to her.

”Feng.”

The attendant flinched. Turned. ”Yes, Your Highness?”

”The water skins from yesterday smelled of silt. You were told to filter through silk. Did you filter through silk?”

”I — Your Highness, the silk was needed for—”

”Did. You. Filter.”

”N-no, Your Highness.”

What happened next was quick and precise and utterly deliberate. Meiling’s foot came forward — not a kick, too refined for that — and hooked the base of the water skin Feng was filling. The skin upended. Water cascaded over the attendant’s lap, soaking his trousers, splashing across his raw, blistered hands. He gasped — not from cold, from the salt in the stream water hitting open wounds.

”Fill them again. Properly. With the silk.”

Feng bowed, water dripping from his clothes, and reached for the scattered water skins with hands that shook from pain rather than fear.

The other students watched. Some looked away. Some didn’t.

Nobody moved.

Cover maintenance requires—

(No.)

The child’s voice. Not small, not frightened — not the girl who’d learned to make herself invisible in the Freehold compound, who’d swallowed screams and eaten silence and survived by never, ever drawing attention. That girl would have looked away. That girl would have known the cost of interfering.

But Jade wasn’t that girl anymore. Hadn’t been for a long time.

(No. I’m not watching this.)

The tactical cost—

(I don’t care.)

Neither do I.

Jayde moved.

Not fast. Not aggressive. She walked — easy, unhurried, the way you approach a skittish horse or a coiled snake. Picked up the water skin that had rolled nearest to her feet. Knelt beside Feng.

”Here.” She held the skin open while the attendant stared at her with the blank incomprehension of someone who had forgotten that help was a thing that existed. ”I’ll hold it steady.”

Then she looked up at Meiling.

The princess’s expression was a masterwork of aristocratic fury — the kind that came from being publicly undermined by someone who should have been invisible. Her Radiance essence flickered, an involuntary surge that pressed against the air like heat from an open forge.

Mid-Flamewrought. Radiance primary. Approximately sixty percent of my suppressed output. Not a threat.

”I don’t recall asking for your assistance,” Meiling said.

”You didn’t.” Jayde filled the water skin. Calmly. Methodically. ”You also didn’t filter it through silk, but since you’re the one who spilled it, I thought I’d save Feng the extra trip.”

Silence.

The kind that spread outward like ripples from a dropped stone. Students turning. Merchants pausing. Even Gareth looked up from whatever he was fixing.

Meiling’s face went white. Then red. The transition was remarkable — rage and humiliation competing for dominance in real time, visible to everyone within thirty feet.

”Do you know who I am?”

”Princess Meiling of the Third Light,” Jayde said. She capped the water skin. Stood. Held it out to Feng, who took it with trembling hands. ”Currently reassigned to Obsidian Academy.” She paused. Let that land. ”Same as the rest of us.”

That was unnecessary. That last part was unnecessary, and you know it.

(It was true.)

Truth and tactical value are not the same thing.

Meiling’s essence surged again — harder this time, enough to ruffle hair and push dust. Jayde’s disguise absorbed it without reaction. Entry Inferno-tempered wouldn’t even feel mid-Flamewrought pressure. The fact that Jayde didn’t flinch, didn’t step back, didn’t show the slightest discomfort — that was the humiliation. Not the words. The fact that this frontier commoner stood in her essence pressure like it was a mild breeze and looked at her with an expression of polite disinterest.

”You,” Meiling said, and her voice was very quiet now. Very controlled. The voice of someone filing a name away in a place where names went to become targets. ”I will remember you.”

”Most people do,” Jayde said, and walked away.

Behind her, Eden was waiting by the wagon. Her expression was complicated — approval and worry tangled together in equal measure.

”That was well done,” she said.

”That was stupid,” Jayde corrected.

”Those aren’t mutually exclusive.” Eden’s mouth did the almost-smile thing. ”You just made an enemy.”

”She was already going to be one. This way I chose the terms.”

Rationalization. You intervened because you couldn’t watch someone be hurt and do nothing. The tactical justification is post-hoc.

(Shut up.)

I’m you.

(Then shut us up.)

Eden handed her a strip of dried meat. ”She’ll come at you sideways. People like that don’t attack head-on — they can’t afford to. She’ll use systems, rules, anything that gives her a structural advantage. At the Academy, that means regulations, merit disputes, social alliances.”

”You’ve seen this before.”

”I’ve been this before. The target, not the aggressor.” Eden chewed thoughtfully. ”Once. Felt like I’d been put through a meat grinder.”

Jayde looked at her sharply. Something in the phrasing — meat grinder. An idiom that didn’t exist on Doha. An expression from—

Unusual idiom. Not local dialect. Don’t read into it.

But she filed it away. The way she filed everything away. Because sixty years of survival had taught her that coincidences were just patterns you hadn’t decoded yet.

***

They crested the final ridge at sunset.

The light was wrong for it — or exactly right, depending on perspective. The sun sat fat and copper on the western horizon, painting the sky in bands of amber and rust and deep violet, and in that impossible light, the thing on the eastern horizon looked less like a building and more like a scar in the landscape.

Obsidian Academy.

Tactical assessment: fortified position, elevated terrain, multiple defensive perimeters. Structure predates surrounding settlement by... significant margin. Architecture inconsistent with standard Lower Realm construction. Materials include—

(It’s beautiful.)

The child’s voice, quiet with something that might have been wonder.

The Academy sprawled across a plateau that rose from the surrounding plains like a fist pushing through soil. Dark stone — not truly obsidian, but close enough to earn the name — formed walls and towers and spires that caught the sunset light and threw it back in fractured shards of black and copper. Ancient. Worn. The kind of structures that had been built by people who expected them to outlast civilizations, and had been right.

Around the base, a city had grown — Obsidian City, the support organism that fed the Academy’s endless appetite for students, materials, and purpose. Lights were beginning to kindle in windows, smoke rising from chimneys, the hum of a hundred thousand lives visible even from this distance.

”There it is,” Eden said. She’d come to stand beside Jayde on the ridge, her satchel over one shoulder, her dark eyes reflecting the last of the light. ”Doesn’t look like much from here.”

”It looks like everything from here.”

Eden glanced at her. Smiled — a real one this time, not the ghost. ”Yeah. It does.”

Behind them, the caravan was catching up. Wagons creaking, horses blowing, students clustering at the ridgeline to stare at the place that would define the next years of their lives. Exclamations. Whispers. One of the blacksmith’s children actually cheered.

In the supply wagon, Takara sat in his nest of blankets and assessed the distant structure with five thousand years of military experience.

[Canirr. Perimeter assessment.]

[Already running, Commander. Outer wall is forty feet, inner wall sixty. Guard rotation visible on the eastern tower. Essence wards are... dense. Multiple layers. Whoever built the defensive matrix knew what they were doing.]

[Threat level?]

[For the principal? Low. For us?] A pause. [The wards are designed to detect concealment above Blazecrowned tier. We’ll need to adjust our suppression protocols before entering the grounds.]

[Do it. I want the team briefed by morning.]

[Acknowledged. And Commander?]

[What?]

[The blacksmith’s daughter put a ribbon on you while you were distracted. Pink. Left ear.]

Takara’s ear rotated. Felt the weight. Felt the bow.

I am the head of Lord Fahmjir’s elite guard. I am five thousand years old. I have killed things that would make gods weep.

I am wearing a pink ribbon.

[Noted,] he sent flatly. [Tell no one.]

[Amaya already knows, Commander.]

[Of course she does.]

In the lead wagon, Reiko’s breathing changed — deeper, slower, the rhythm of something approaching a threshold it had been building toward for days. Through the bond, Jayde felt it: a pulse of ancient recognition, brief and brilliant, like a door cracking open to show a glimpse of what lay beyond.

Then it faded. The bond went quiet again. Not yet. Soon.

Jayde turned back to the Academy on the horizon.

Somewhere behind her, Meiling’s palanquin had stopped on the ridge. The curtains were open. The princess stood beside it, staring at the distant Academy with an expression that Jayde recognized because she’d worn it herself — in another life, approaching another institution that was supposed to be a prison and became a home.

Not contempt. Not rage.

Fear.

File that away, too.

She did.

The sun sank below the ridge. The Academy’s dark towers caught the last light and held it, burning like black candles against the deepening sky, and the caravan began its final descent toward the plain below.
