Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 238: Chapter 233: The Conclave

Location: Thornhaven Village — Central Clearing

Date/Time: 25 Ashwhisper, 9938 AZI

Realm: Mid Realm

They came through the forests like ghosts.

Five days of signal fires and runners and fast-movers sprinting the arterial paths that connected the mixed-breed settlements of the primordial forests — the ancient communication network that had survived centuries of hunters and purges and kingdoms that wished they didn’t exist. Five days, and the elders answered.

They arrived in pairs and small groups, travelling the hidden trails that only outcasts knew. Some flew — aetherwing elders with weathered wings and sharp eyes, landing in the clearings beyond Thornhaven’s new walls and folding their wings with the practiced caution of people who’d learned to make themselves small. Some walked — half-dwarves built like the stone they descended from, half-elves with pointed ears and wary expressions, human-mixed families who’d lived so long in the borderlands that their bloodlines were a tapestry no one could unravel.

Lyria counted them from the porch.

Thirty-one elders had arrived by dawn of the fifth day, with another dozen expected by noon. Representatives from settlements as far as the Silverleaf border, the Ironveil foothills, and the deep interior where the primordial forest grew so thick that sunlight was a rumour. Each one carried the authority to speak for their community. Each one had come because the emergency signal meant death was coming, and mixed breeds did not ignore that signal.

They’d learned not to.

”Forty-one settlements represented so far,” Torvald said, joining her on the porch. He looked as though he hadn’t slept in five days, which was probably accurate. ”With runners confirming another eighteen have received the message and are sending delegates by proxy — sealed letters with voting authority. Two settlements couldn’t be reached. Deep interior, past the Greenveil Ridge. We’ll have to send word separately.”

”That’s enough?”

”More than enough for an emergency conclave. Quorum requires fifteen. We’ll have over sixty settlements represented by the time the letters arrive.” Torvald’s grey eyes swept the village, which had transformed into something between a refugee camp and a war council. Tents and lean-tos clustered between cottages. Cook fires sent thin columns of smoke into the morning air. Everywhere, people — strangers to each other and yet not, connected by the shared experience of being unwanted.

”They don’t look happy to be here,” Lyria said.

”They’re not.” Torvald’s voice was blunt. ”Emergency conclave means someone’s dying. They’ve left their villages exposed to travel here, and they don’t know why yet. All they know is that Thornhaven called fifth protocol, and the last time fifth protocol was called, the Ironveil purge killed thirteen thousand people.” He looked at her. ”They’re going to be angry, child. Prepare yourself for that.”

Lyria’s hands tightened on the mending in her lap. She wasn’t mending anything. She’d been holding the same tunic for two hours, pulling the same thread through the same hole, because her hands needed something to do or they’d shake.

”Will they believe me?”

Torvald didn’t answer immediately. The pause was worse than a no.

”They’ll believe me,” he said finally. ”Whether they believe you is something else entirely.”

***

The conclave convened at midday in the central clearing.

Torvald stood at the centre. Around him, arranged in a rough semicircle on logs and stumps and the stone benches that Kael’vor had shaped from the earth, sat the elders. Forty-three present, with sealed letters from another twenty settlements stacked in a wooden box at Torvald’s feet.

They were a patchwork of the Mid Realm’s forgotten. Half-bloods with features that didn’t match any single race. Aetherwing women with scarred wings. Dwarven men whose beards were braided with patterns from communities that no longer existed. Elven half-breeds whose pointed ears marked them for rejection in every court that valued purity.

And they were already angry.

Lyria could feel it — the low hum of resentment that radiated from over forty people who’d been pulled from their homes by an emergency signal, forced to travel through dangerous territory, left their families and villages undefended, and arrived to find demons standing in the clearing where they’d been told a conclave awaited.

The murmuring had started before Torvald raised his hand. It didn’t stop after.

”You know why you’re here,” Torvald began.

”We know nothing.” The interruption came from a broad-shouldered elder whose aetherwing heritage showed in the vestigial wing-ridges along his spine — too stunted for flight, prominent enough for persecution. His name was Gareth, and he’d led the Fernhollow settlement for thirty years. ”We know fifth protocol. We know you’ve got demons in your village, which is alarming enough on its own. And we know our people are exposed while we sit here.” He leaned forward. ”So talk fast, Torvald.”

Torvald didn’t bristle. He’d expected this.

”Three weeks ago, a girl in this village awakened as a Prophetess.”

The clearing went quiet. Not the respectful quiet of awe. The suspicious quiet of people who’d heard too many claims and been burned by too many false promises.

”A prophetess,” said the Redoak elder — a half-dwarven woman with iron-grey hair and arms thick as tree branches. Her name was Hessa, and her skepticism preceded her by reputation. ”In Thornhaven. A mixed-breed prophetess.”

”Yes.”

”How old?”

”Fourteen.”

The murmuring came back. Louder now, and sharper. Lyria sat at the edge of the clearing, behind Torvald, flanked by Voresh and Kael’vor. The rest of the quintet held their usual positions around her — Drazhen to the left, Sorvak somewhere she couldn’t see but could feel, the twins at the perimeter. Behind them, Vaelith’s quintet maintained their own formation around the ancient healer, Vorketh a wall of bronze and copper beside his mate.

”Fourteen,” Hessa repeated. ”Newly awakened. No training, no lineage, no temple verification. And you called fifth protocol based on the visions of a fourteen-year-old girl who’s been a prophetess for — what — three weeks?”

”Twenty days,” Torvald said.

”Twenty days.” Gareth stood. His wing-ridges were flushed — the aetherwing equivalent of raised hackles. ”Torvald, do you have any idea what it cost me to get here? Half my scouts holding the southern approach alone. Three days of forced march. I left sixty children with a skeleton defensive force because your signal fires said emergency.” His voice rose. ”If this is some newly-awakened child’s nightmare—”

”It’s not a nightmare.” Torvald’s voice cut through with an authority that came from decades of keeping people alive. ”Sit down, Gareth.”

Gareth sat. But his jaw stayed tight.

Torvald told them.

Not the vision itself — he couldn’t share that. He told them what Lyria had seen. Sharlin’s plan. The quota increase. The shadow guard. The mixed breeds identified as a resource. Cattle. An endless supply. The thirty-day timeline. The breeding pens. The children ground into pills.

Eight hundred thousand people. Four hundred and fifty thousand children.

He told it plainly, without embellishment, in the steady voice of a man delivering a field report. And when he finished, the clearing was no longer angry.

It was divided.

”This is one girl’s vision,” said an elder from the Greenveil Ridge — an ancient half-elf whose pointed ears were silver with age. ”One newly awakened seer, untrained, unverified. Prophetesses can see false futures. They can see fears instead of fates. Every child knows this.”

”Prophetesses can also see true,” Torvald replied.

”And we have no way of knowing which this is.” Hessa crossed her thick arms. ”I’m not uprooting my community — five hundred people, Torvald, including my grandchildren — based on the word of a girl none of us have met.”

Agreement rippled through the semicircle. Nodding. Muttered affirmations. The reflexive caution of people who’d survived by never trusting anything that sounded too urgent, too certain, too much like a trap.

”And the demons?” Gareth gestured toward Voresh and the quintet. ”Why are there demons in your village, Torvald? Since when do we trust the very creatures—”

”The demons are here because of the prophetess,” Torvald said. ”That’s a longer story than we have time for. What matters—”

”What matters is that you’ve called fifth protocol to tell us a child had a bad dream and some demons showed up offering help.” The Greenveil elder’s voice was dry as old paper. ”Forgive me if I don’t find that reassuring.”

”Send scouts,” another elder called from the back. ”Two weeks of observation before we commit to anything.”

”We don’t have two weeks!” Torvald’s composure cracked. The first time Lyria had ever seen it crack. ”Thirty days. That’s the timeline. Thirty days from the vision, and the shadow guard—”

”The vision of a child—”

”— already spent five of those days getting you here—”

”Then perhaps you should have sent scouts instead of summoning a conclave for an unverified—”

The voices blurred together. Forty-three elders and not one of them willing to bet their community on the word of a girl they’d never met. The arguments tangled and knotted and pulled in every direction, and Lyria sat on her log at the edge of the clearing and felt the conclave slipping away like sand through fingers.

She felt the futures branching.

The one where they believed and the one where they didn’t, and the second future was the one from her vision, the breeding pens and the grinding rooms and children on tables and Sharlin’s smile and the words that echoed in Lyria’s skull every time she closed her eyes—

Cattle. An endless supply.

(They don’t believe. They’re not going to believe. I’m fourteen, and they don’t know me, and they think I’m a child playing at prophecy, and their children are going to die because I can’t — I can’t make them—)

They need to see it. Not hear it. See it.

The thought arrived without a source. Not the child’s voice, not the analytical assessment she sometimes fell into. Something older. Something that lived in the prophetic rune on her forehead and pulsed with the accumulated weight of seers who’d come before her. Knowledge that wasn’t memory — instinct that wasn’t learned. The gift, telling her what it could do.

She didn’t know if it was possible. Vaelith hadn’t mentioned this. No one had mentioned this. The idea existed only in the burning space between her terror and the rune’s ancient pulse, and it was either prophecy or madness, and she didn’t have time to figure out which.

”—send scouts first,” Hessa was saying. ”Two weeks of observation before we commit—”

”ENOUGH!”

The word came out of Lyria like something expelled. Not shouted — detonated. It left her throat with a force that had nothing to do with volume and everything to do with something inside her that had been building since she sat down and felt the conclave’s doubt and saw the future splitting into save them and watch them die.

She was standing. She didn’t remember standing.

Every eye turned to her. Forty-three elders, eleven ancient demons, Torvald with his mouth still open mid-sentence. Voresh behind her — she felt his alarm spike through the bond, sharp and bright, and something else underneath it: recognition. The recognition of a thirty-thousand-year-old warrior who knew when someone was about to do something extraordinary and dangerous and unstoppable.

Lyria’s hands were shaking. Her whole body was shaking. The prophetic rune on her forehead blazed — white-hot, visible even through the necklace’s suppression, burning like a brand.

”You don’t believe him,” she said. Her voice wasn’t steady. It was the voice of a fourteen-year-old girl who was terrified and furious and desperate, and something about that rawness silenced the clearing more completely than authority ever could. ”You don’t believe me. Fine. You don’t have to believe. You just have to see.”

She reached for the gift.

Not the way she reached during visions — not the passive receiving, the falling-into that happened when prophecy seized her. This was active. Deliberate. She grabbed the prophetic sight with both hands and pulled, and the rune on her forehead erupted with silver-white light that poured from her like a dam breaking.

She didn’t know how she did it. Later, she wouldn’t be able to explain the mechanics — couldn’t describe the channel she opened between her gift and the minds of every person in the clearing. It wasn’t a technique. It wasn’t a skill she’d been taught. It was a fourteen-year-old girl who’d seen the future and couldn’t bear the thought of watching it arrive, reaching out with everything she had and dragging forty-three elders and eleven ancient demons into the thing that was killing her.

The clearing vanished.

***

They were inside the vision.

Not watching it — inside it. Standing in Sharlin’s golden room as the High Priestess paced and raged. Hearing her voice. Smelling the candle wax. Feeling the cold stone beneath feet that weren’t really there.

”Five hundred. The quota is five hundred this quarter—”

Lyria felt the elders’ shock. Not through essence or bond — through something rawer, the psychic bleed of over fifty minds suddenly submerged in someone else’s sight. Hessa’s iron composure cracking. Gareth’s anger turning to ice. The Greenveil elder’s scholarly detachment evaporating like dew in a furnace.

The guard’s suggestion. The mixed breeds. The smile.

”Cattle. An endless supply.”

The first vision unfolded. The cribs. The grinding rooms. The tables. The drainage channels. The tools. The children laid on stone — anonymous children, faces the elders didn’t know, but the size of them, the smallness of the hands, and the stillness of the sedated bodies — that was universal. That needed no recognition. The essence extraction. The bone. The blood. The marrow. The bone-white pills pulsing at the end of the line.

Someone in the clearing whimpered. The sound came from far away and everywhere at once — a mind inside the vision reacting to what it was being shown.

The vision shifted. The second prophecy. The outcome.

And this was where the gift showed its teeth.

Because the prophetic sight didn’t deal in generalities. It showed specifics. And the specifics of eight hundred thousand people being hunted meant eight hundred thousand individual stories of loss, and the gift chose the ones that would cut deepest.

The hunters came first. Shadow guard operatives moving through the primordial forests with the methodical precision of harvesters walking a field. They knew the hidden trails. They knew the secret passages. They found every safehouse, every concealed hollow, every underground shelter that generations of mixed breeds had dug and warded and trusted with their children’s lives. Radiance essence burned the canopy away in directed bursts, and the settlements lay exposed like wounds.

Thornhaven’s walls shattered under eight Peak Apexblight operatives in eleven minutes. Fernhollow fell faster. Redoak lasted twenty minutes — Hessa’s people fought, gods help them, they fought — and it wasn’t enough.

And then the sorting.

Children pulled from hiding places and loaded into wagons. Families ripped apart at the seams. The elders saw their own villages now — their own streets, their own homes, their own people. Hessa’s granddaughter Selka, nine years old, dark braids, screaming for her grandmother as hands closed around her arms and lifted her into a line. Gareth’s nephew, six, wings pinned with metal clasps, sedated, carried toward a transport. The Greenveil elder’s twin great-grandchildren — four years old — wailing in the arms of workers who handled them like parcels.

Breeding age to the left. Everyone else to the right.

Some of the children went to the grinding rooms. The tables. The tools. The pills.

Some of the young women went to garrison complexes converted to breeding pens. Cells with no doors. Pregnancies monitored on schedules. Bodies discarded when they broke. Replaced. There were always more.

Some went to cultivation chambers. Enhanced with Soulbloom. Made into weapons. Their power tasted wrong — hollow, mechanical, the essence of consumed souls wearing human faces.

The right-hand groups — the elders, the injured, the ones deemed useless — marched into the forest. They didn’t come back.

The vision pushed further. Years compressed into moments. The aetherwings enslaved — their wings clipped, their essence siphoned. The elves chained in labor camps. The human kings who’d petitioned for the purge discovering that ”vermin” was a word that expanded to fit anyone Sharlin chose. The passageways to the Lower Realm broken last, after the Mid Realm was consolidated, and there was nowhere left to run.

And then the hell gate. Sharlin kneeling before the opening she’d torn in the world. The Zartonesh pouring through.

The demons on the battlefield. All of them. Men and women together for the first time in living memory — the females drawn from hiding because there was nowhere left to hide. Ren at the front, purple eyes blazing, soulblades drawn.

The Zartonesh general’s scream:

”Kill all the women. Capture all the men.”

The vision shattered.

***

Lyria came back to herself on her knees.

She didn’t remember falling. Her nose was bleeding — both nostrils, a steady stream of red that dripped onto the moss and the front of her tunic. Her head felt like someone had driven a spike through the prophetic rune and into her brain. Her hands were planted in the earth, fingers clawed into dirt, holding her upright because her arms were the only things that still worked.

The rune on her forehead was dark. Spent. The light that had poured from it was gone, replaced by a bone-deep exhaustion that went past physical into something spiritual — the feeling of having emptied a vessel that wasn’t designed to be emptied.

Around her, the clearing was destroyed.

Not physically. The logs and stumps were still there, the cook fires still smoked, the walls still stood. But the people sitting on those logs were unmade. The skepticism that had armoured them for the past two hours had been stripped away by ninety seconds of shared sight, and what was left underneath was naked and raw and terrible.

Hessa was on her hands and knees, vomiting. The half-dwarven woman who’d crossed her arms and demanded scouts and called Lyria a child — she was retching into the moss with her iron-grey hair hanging in her face and her massive shoulders heaving, and the sound she made between heaves was a name. Selka. Over and over. Selka.

Gareth hadn’t moved. He sat on his log like a man turned to stone, hands gripping his knees, wing-ridges flat against his spine. His eyes were open, but he wasn’t seeing the clearing. He was still in the vision. Still watching his nephew carried toward the grinding room. His lips moved, but no sound came out.

The Greenveil elder was weeping. Silent, dignified, ancient tears streaming down a face that had seen centuries of hardship and had never looked like this — cracked open, hollowed, the composure of a lifetime dissolved by the image of twin great-grandchildren on stone tables.

Others were crying. Some were sick. Some sat in stunned silence. One elder — a young woman from a settlement Lyria didn’t know — had curled into herself on the ground, arms wrapped around her knees, rocking.

And Vaelith.

Vaelith had not been spared.

The ancient healer — eighteen thousand years of composure, of steady hands and measured words and the clinical discipline of a woman who had watched her race die one male at a time for millennia — was on the ground. Not standing. Not composed. On the ground, her knees in the moss, her hands pressed over her mouth, her Shan’keth markings blazing in erratic, agonised pulses. Her green-gold eyes were wide and streaming. She’d seen the children. She’d seen the demon girls — the girls with dark hair and green-gold eyes who looked like the daughters her race hadn’t been able to produce for eight thousand years — strapped to tables and ground into pills.

Vorketh was already there.

The massive warrior had crossed the clearing in three strides the instant the vision released them, and he was on his knees beside his mate with his arms around her, his bronze face rigid with a fury so controlled it radiated from him like heat from a forge. He held Vaelith against his chest and murmured to her — low, in demon tongue, words too quiet for anyone else to hear — and his copper eyes, tarnished and ancient and burning, found Lyria across the clearing.

The look he gave her was complicated. Not hostile. Not exactly. But a truemated male whose mate was weeping on the ground because a fourteen-year-old girl had dragged her through a vision of children being butchered — that male was not going to be understanding about it. Not yet. Not while Vaelith was shaking in his arms.

Later, when reason returned, he would acknowledge the necessity. He would recognise that Lyria had done the only thing that could have convinced the conclave. He would respect the courage it had taken.

But right now, his mate was hurt, and the person who’d caused it was twelve feet away, and the growl that vibrated in his chest was the sound of forty thousand years of protective instinct being held in check by the thinnest thread of rationalisation.

Voresh was beside Lyria. She felt him before she saw him — his arms around her, lifting her from the ground, pulling her against the broad warmth of his chest. His essence pulsed through the bond in a continuous wave of stability that was the only thing keeping her conscious.

”I’m here,” he said. His voice was rough. ”I’m here. You’re here.”

Then, quieter. Harder. The voice of a man who was simultaneously holding the girl he would die for and wanting very badly to shake her.

”Don’t you ever do that again.”

Not a request. A command. The first one he’d ever given her, delivered in a tone that left no room for the gentle, patient demon she’d grown accustomed to. This was the warrior. The thirty-thousand-year-old who’d watched her pour herself out without anchoring, without preparation, without any guarantee that the projection wouldn’t burn through her channels and kill her where she stood.

”You could have died,” he said. ”You could have — do you understand what you—” He stopped. Breathed. His arms tightened. ”Don’t. Ever.”

”They weren’t going to believe,” Lyria whispered. Her voice was a wreck. Barely audible.

”I know.” His jaw was tight against the top of her head. ”I know why you did it. And I am furious with you.”

She almost laughed. Almost. The sound came out as a wet, exhausted breath against his chest.

”Did they see?” she asked.

”They saw.”

”All of it?”

”All of it.”

Across the clearing, Vorketh had gotten Vaelith to her feet. The healer was still shaking — subtle tremors running through her frame that her mate’s arms couldn’t quite still — but the Shan’keth markings were stabilising. Shifting from erratic anguish to something deeper. Slower. The rhythm of a truth-reader processing what she’d been shown, whether she wanted to process it or not.

Vaelith pulled back from Vorketh’s chest. Wiped her eyes with the back of her hand — a gesture so human, so unlike the composed ancient healer, that Lyria felt her own throat tighten.

Then Vaelith turned to the clearing. And when she spoke, her voice was not steady. It was not the measured, clinical voice of the healer. It shook. But it carried.

”I have lived eighteen thousand years,” she said. ”I have known three prophetesses. One in her prime, one in decline, one at the end of her gift.” She paused. Swallowed. ”What this child just did — the forced projection of prophetic vision across dozens of unwarded minds simultaneously, with full sensory fidelity, without training, without preparation, without anchoring — this has not been done in living memory. This has not been done in ten thousand years.”

She turned to look at Lyria. And there was something in her expression that went beyond professional assessment, beyond awe, into a territory Lyria couldn’t name.

”The last seer who could do what she just did was the Demon Prophetess Kethara, who lived twelve thousand years ago and was considered the most powerful prophetic voice in recorded history.” Vaelith’s Shan’keth pulsed. ”My gift confirms every thread of what you just experienced. Every detail. Every face. Every name. This is not fabrication. This is not a child’s nightmare. This is authenticated prophecy, delivered by a seer of a calibre that should not exist.”

She paused. Her composure was returning — slowly, unevenly, rebuilt on the foundation of eighteen thousand years of discipline. But her eyes were still wet.

”And it is true. All of it.”

The clearing held its breath.

Then Hessa spoke.

She’d gotten off her knees. Her face was grey. There was vomit on her sleeve, and she didn’t care. Her voice came out like gravel dragged over stone.

”I saw Selka.” She looked at Lyria — really looked, not the dismissive glance of an elder assessing a child, but the shattered gaze of a grandmother who’d just watched her granddaughter die. ”She’s nine. She braids her hair the way I taught her. And I saw her—”

She stopped. Pressed a hand to her mouth. Controlled herself with visible, physical effort.

”What’s the offer?” Hessa said. ”Tell me the offer.”

***

The debate was different after the vision.

Not shorter — the elders were too responsible for that, too accustomed to weighing decisions that affected hundreds of lives. But the quality of the argument had changed. The skepticism was gone. In its place was the desperate, clear-eyed pragmatism of people who’d seen the future and were trying to outrun it.

Voresh answered their questions. Still holding Lyria against his side — she couldn’t stand on her own yet, and he wasn’t letting go regardless. The blood oath. Both parties bound. The king’s obligations visible in the common path — any violation instantly known to every demon alive. A city of their own. Autonomous governance.

”Why?” The question came from Gareth. He’d found his voice again, though it sounded like something that had been through a fire. ”Why would the demon king offer a city and protection to eight hundred thousand refugees?”

”Because the vision doesn’t end with you,” Voresh said. ”It ends with the Zartonesh at our gates and every demon on the battlefield. Your prophetess showed us our own extinction on the far side of your genocide. We have no interest in watching that future arrive.”

”The gateway,” Hessa said. She’d taken control of the logistics discussion with the iron practicality of a woman who’d just decided she was going to save her granddaughter and needed to know how. ”How does it work?”

Voresh explained. Temporary. Constructed by demon engineers. Wide enough for fifty abreast. Eight hours active. Destroyed after the last person crossed.

”Five days to build. Five days for your people to converge through the network. Ten days total.” He paused. ”Fifteen days before Sharlin’s deadline.”

”Margin’s thin,” Gareth said.

”Margin’s alive,” Hessa replied. ”Thin and alive beats comfortable and dead.”

The vote was called at sundown.

Emergency conclave rules — simple majority with quorum. Sixty-three settlements represented between present elders and sealed proxy letters. Torvald read the question in the old way, the formal phrasing that the mixed breeds had maintained since the first conclave, generations ago:

”Shall the free peoples of the primordial forests accept the demon king’s offer of sanctuary, cross to the demon realm, and leave the lands that have sheltered us?”

Fifty-five in favour. Six opposed. Two abstentions.

It wasn’t unanimous. It didn’t need to be. The six who voted against were invited to remain — their choice, their right, their risk. Three of them changed their votes before the night was out.

The conclave was over.

The exodus had begun.

***

Lyria sat by the stream afterward. Her head pounded. Her nose was still crusted with dried blood. Her body felt wrung out from — whatever she’d done. She didn’t have a word for it. Didn’t have a framework. One moment she’d been terrified and desperate and furious, and the next she’d reached for the gift and the gift had answered with something she hadn’t known it could do.

She felt hollowed out. Not empty — emptied. Like a vessel poured past its limits, the walls still intact but thin. Fragile.

Voresh sat beside her. Close, now. Not at the bottom of the step. Beside her, on the same bank, his arm warm against hers. The anger hadn’t left his face entirely — it lived in the tightness of his jaw and the way his copper eyes kept moving to her nose, checking for fresh blood — but it had settled into something more complicated. Anger and pride and terror and tenderness, all knotted together the way they always seemed to be with him.

She let herself lean.

”Someone’s watching us,” Voresh said. Not with alarm. With the careful neutrality of a man who’d noticed something and was deciding how to handle it.

Lyria followed his gaze to the tree line beyond the stream. A figure stood there — short, broad, but built in a way that defied easy categorisation. Not quite dwarven, not quite human, not quite anything. His frame had the density of stone but the proportions were wrong for a pureblood dwarf — too tall by a hand, shoulders too wide, limbs knotted with muscle that layered in patterns belonging to at least three different species. His beard was white as bone and braided with metal clasps, but the face behind it carried features that shifted depending on the angle — dwarven brow, something almost elven in the cheekbones, a jaw that was purely, stubbornly human.

His hands were enormous. Scarred with the marks of forge-work that went back centuries. Maybe millennia.

He was watching Lyria with an expression she couldn’t read.

”I know you,” he said. His voice was deep. The kind of deep that came from a chest built for resonance — to carry words across forge halls and through stone corridors. ”Not you. Your necklace.”

Lyria’s hand went to her collarbone.

”I made it,” he said. ”Eighty-seven years ago. For a woman named Thessa. Your great-grandmother.”

The world went very still.

”You’re—” Lyria started.

”Brannick.” He stepped closer. His eyes — dark, steady, old beyond what his face could explain — fixed on the silver pendant resting against Lyria’s throat. ”Mastersmith. Don’t ask me what I am — I couldn’t tell you even if I wanted to. Sharlin’s father mixed so many bloodlines in me that the gods themselves probably couldn’t sort it out.” Something grim flickered across his expression — old pain, banked and carried. ”I’m one of the originals. From the program.”

The words landed like stones in still water.

”Thessa’s great-granddaughter.” His gaze moved from the necklace to her face. To the prophetic rune on her forehead — dark now, spent, but still visible. ”I made that necklace for Thessa first. Then three more, over the years, for your mother’s family.” His dark eyes moved to Kaela, standing at the group’s rear. ”Three generations of hiding what shouldn’t have needed hiding.”

He looked at Voresh. At the copper wings that were still partially visible behind Voresh’s back — not fully retracted, the way they rarely were anymore around Lyria.

”Sharlin’s done far worse than what your prophetess just showed them,” Brannick said. His voice didn’t waver, but his enormous, forge-scarred hands tightened at his sides. ”Far worse. Her father did worse still. I know. I was there.” He met Lyria’s eyes. ”Come with me.”
