Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 248: Chapter 243: The Father’s Voice

Location: Underground Cavern, Deep Zone — Secret Realm

Date/Time: Outside time (sword pocket)

Realm: Lower Realm — Obsidian Academy Territory

The shock that went through her hand wasn’t pain. It was recognition.

Like pressing your palm against a door you hadn’t opened in decades and feeling the wood remember your handprint. Like hearing a melody you’d forgotten you knew and having every note arrive exactly where it should. Not electricity — identity. The sword knew her.

Jayde’s hand closed around the grip. It fit. Not approximately. Not well enough. Perfectly. As if the measurements of her palm and the lengths of her fingers and the specific calluses she’d earned from White’s training had been anticipated, designed for, built into the wrapped leather before she was born.

(It was. Wasn’t it.)

She drew the sword from the stone.

The runes along the blade ignited. Not fire — light. Deep red, pulsing once like a heartbeat, then settling to a steady glow that ran the full length of the fuller like blood through a vein. The blade hummed. Not sound — vibration, felt through the grip and into her bones and through her bones into her Crucible Core, where it settled against her essence the way Reiko’s bond had settled. Thin. Unbreakable. Known.

The jewel at the hilt opened.

Not literally. Its surface didn’t change, didn’t crack, didn’t move. But the dormant red became a living red, a watching red, and what had been a sleeping eye was suddenly, absolutely, awake.

Something threaded through her Crucible Core. A connection — not like Reiko’s bond, not like Yinxin’s contract, not like the Pavilion’s anchor. Something older. A soul-bond. The sword knew her essence, and her essence knew the sword, and the knowledge was immediate and absolute and felt less like discovery than like reunion.

Vael’kir.

The name arrived in her mind without being spoken. She didn’t read it, didn’t hear it, didn’t translate it from the unknown symbols on the walls. She simply knew it, the way she knew her own name, the way she knew the colour of her eyes.

Vael’kir. God’s Edge.

Jayde held it. The weight was perfect.

***

The cavern walls lit up.

Not the amber glow that had guided her here — something brighter, sharper, the symbols carved into every surface igniting in sequence like a circuit completing. Gold-white light raced along the spiralling lines, filling the carved channels until the entire cavern pulsed with it, and the air changed, thickened, became something that was more than air.

Essence. Dense, ancient, layered with intent so precise it bypassed language entirely. The symbols weren’t words. They were meaning — raw, unfiltered understanding pressed into stone and preserved across an ocean of time.

And a voice.

Not sound. Not thought, exactly. Essence-carried awareness, as clear as if someone were standing beside her, speaking directly into the space between her ribs where the child and the soldier and the girl on Doha all lived together.

Jayde had never heard this voice before. Not once, in either lifetime.

She knew it anyway.

The way you know your own heartbeat. The way you know the sound of rain before you open the door. The way you know, in the wordless place beneath knowing, that the voice speaking is the one that was supposed to speak to you first, and never got the chance.

Her father’s voice.

”If you are hearing this, then you found your way.”

She stopped breathing.

”I knew you would. I saw it — one path among millions, thin as spider silk, but there. You would have to suffer first. You would have to break. You would have to become someone strong enough to walk into a mountain alone and not turn back. And you did. You’re here.”

The voice paused. Not the way recordings paused — the way a person paused when the next words hurt to say.

”My name is Pyratheon. I am your father. And I am going to tell you everything I can, because you deserve it, and because there isn’t much time — not for the telling, and not for what’s coming.”

Pyratheon. Confirmed. Father’s identity consistent with prior briefing. Logging all data.

Her tactical mind was trying. Doing its job, cataloguing, cross-referencing, building the file it always built when new intelligence arrived. But it was quiet about it. Subdued. As though even the analytical framework she’d built across sixty years of war understood that this moment was not its territory.

”My gift — the thing that made me what I was — was True Sight. Not prophecy. Sight. I could see the strands of what might be. Every decision, every choice, every breath — they split the future into millions of threads, and I could follow them. Forward. Backward. Across.”

A pause.

”I saw you before you existed. A strand so bright it burned. My daughter. Mine and Ala’s — though she does not know. She has never known. And I saw what was coming for you.”

The cavern lights pulsed, and the meaning beneath the voice shifted — darker now, weighted with something that wasn’t grief exactly, but lived in the same place.

”There was a darkness. Ancient, patient, the thing that destroyed our era. It was stirring again. And when I traced the strands forward — millions of them, every permutation I could reach — I found that you would be at the centre of it. Not by choice. By nature. By what you carry. By what we made you to be.”

Another pause. Longer.

”In most of those strands, you died. In almost all of them. The darkness found you early, before you could become what you needed to be, and it consumed you the way it consumed everything else. I spent... a long time... looking for the strands where you survived. Alone. I never told your mother.”

The voice thickened. Not with shame — with the weight of a choice that had cost more than anything else he’d ever done.

”The only thing Ala ever truly wanted was a child. Ours. If she had known — known you existed, known what was coming for you, known the shape of your suffering — she would have torn the universe apart trying to change it. She would have fought the heavens themselves. And that would have destroyed the one chance you had. Every strand where I told her ended the same way. Her love would have been the thing that killed you.”

A breath.

”So I hid you. Your soul — I hid it the moment it was created, before you existed in any form anyone could track. Before your mother could feel you. Before anyone could know. The cruelest thing I have ever done is steal the knowledge of her own child from the one person who deserved it most.”

His voice changed. Rougher. The sound of someone confessing something they’d carried alone for longer than civilisations lasted.

”I found one path. One. A thread so thin I could barely see it, so fragile that a single wrong variable would snap it. I built everything around that thread. Your body — infused with ancient bloodlines, engineered for maximum resilience. Not because I wanted you to be powerful. Because I needed you to survive what was coming, and power was the only armour I could give you.”

Jayde’s hands were shaking. Not the fine tremor of her tactical mind’s adrenaline response — the clumsy, full-body shaking of a child hearing something too large to hold.

”The family that carried you — the Freeholds — they were not your blood. I needed a vessel. A family in the right place at the right time. I left signs for them. Warnings. ’Look for the child with dragon eyes.’ There were two paths from there.”

A breath. The kind that meant the next part was worse.

”In the first path, they accepted you. The bond activated. The first seal opened. Freehold would have risen to become one of the most powerful clans on Doha. They would have loved you, raised you, and you would have been strong enough for what came next.”

Silence.

”They chose the second path.”

The voice didn’t describe the second path. It didn’t have to. The pit was in Jayde’s bones. It lived in the part of her that flinched at small spaces and couldn’t sleep without checking the door and still heard, sometimes, in the space between dreaming and waking, the scrape of the food tray on stone.

”I saw it happen. All of it. Every day. Every year. Every moment of what they did to you. The saddest thing a parent can know is the precise shape of their child’s suffering, and the knowledge that preventing it would destroy the only path to their survival.”

The voice broke. Not dramatically — a fracture at the edge of a syllable, a roughness that hadn’t been there before, the kind of break that happened in voices that were too old and too tired and too hurt to hold steady anymore.

”I could not save you from the pit. If I had intervened — in any way, through any agent, by any mechanism — the thread snapped. I checked. I checked thousands of times. In every strand where I saved you from that suffering, you died later. Every one.”

(He watched.)

The child’s voice. Small. Not accusing — just... understanding.

(He watched the whole time, and he couldn’t do anything.)

”But the second path had something the first path didn’t.”

The voice steadied. Hardened. Not cold — forged. The sound of someone who had watched their child suffer and channelled every moment of helpless fury into building something.

”It had you. Not the girl who grew up loved and protected. The girl who grew up in darkness and taught herself to survive. Who carried sixty years of another life inside her and refused to let either lifetime break her. Who crawled out of a hole in the ground and chose to live when dying would have been easier.”

A pause.

”I am sorry I could not be there. I have seen who you become — the strands showed me that much, and it was more than enough. But seeing is not the same as being there. I wish I could have been the one to teach you to hold a blade. I wish I could have argued with you about staying up too late and worried about you when you were sick and done all the small, ordinary things that fathers do. The things that don’t require being a god. Just being present.”

A pause.

”I would have been good at it, I think. The ordinary parts.”

***

The meaning shifted again. Information now. Dense, precise, the way Isha delivered briefings — love didn’t exclude efficiency, and this was a man with limited time and unlimited things to say.

”Your soul. When it shattered—”

The voice stopped. When it resumed, the roughness was back. Deeper.

”The enemy hid it from me. The one thing I didn’t foresee. When I felt your soul break — felt the pieces scatter — I—”

Silence. Five seconds. Ten.

”I preserved what I could. Gathered the fragments. Sent them to safe places to heal. You are a divine soul, daughter. You survived what should have been annihilation. The pieces are finding their way back to you. Each one you integrate will make you more whole. More yourself. More of what you were always meant to be.”

”Your mother is Ala. The spirit of this world. And she does not know you are her daughter. She may sense something — your essence carries pieces of us both — but I hid your origin so deeply that even she cannot see the truth. Not yet. When the time is right, she will understand. But that time is not now, and the telling is not mine to do. It will be yours, when you are ready. When you are strong enough for what comes after.”

”The sword you’re holding — I made it. Before I left this world. Every rune is a decision I made about what you might need. Every fold of the metal is a question I asked the strands and answered with steel. I made it teachable, not indestructible — because you need to learn, not to be protected. You have had enough of being protected by things that failed.”

(He made this. For me. Alone.)

”The spirit inside the blade will teach you what I cannot. Trust him. He has been waiting longer than you can imagine, and he is... particular. But his heart is in the right place, even if his temperament is not.”

”Even someone of my power cannot break the rules. I bent them. As far as they would go. This sword. This space. The gifts I have hidden across Doha. Every one is a bent rule. A loophole. A place where love could fit through a crack in the laws of existence.”

”There is more. Things I cannot tell you — not because I choose to keep them from you, but because the telling would close strands you need open. Walk your path. Find the pieces. The darkness is stirring, and what destroyed our era will try again, and you will be at the centre of it whether you choose to be or not.”

”But know this.”

The voice steadied one final time. Not rough now. Not broken. Clear, and warm, and absolute.

”I am waiting for you. And when the time comes — when all the pieces are gathered, and all the paths converge — we will be together. All of us. Even your mother. Especially your mother.”

”Walk your path, my daughter. Walk it with courage. Walk it with the stubbornness you inherited from your mother — she does not know she gave it to you, but it is hers, and it is fierce — and the vision I gave you and the heart that is entirely your own.”

”I love you. I loved you before you existed. I love you now, across forty thousand years and the death of everything I was, and nothing — not time, not darkness, not the silence between stars — can change that.”

”Be brave. Be stubborn. Be kind when you can and ruthless when you must.”

”And forgive the sword spirit. He means well.”

***

The light faded. The symbols on the walls dimmed to ember-glow, then nothing, then darkness, and the cavern was quiet again except for her breathing and the hum of the sword in her hand.

Data integration complete. Father identity confirmed: Pyratheon. Mother identity confirmed: Ala. Divine heritage confirmed. Soul fragmentation confirmed. Enemy entity referenced but not identified. Multiple—

Her analytical mind stopped. Not because it ran out of things to catalogue. Because the child’s voice was louder.

Not words. Just sound. The sound a person makes when something inside them that has been empty for seventeen years fills up so fast it hurts, and the hurt is so different from every other hurt they’ve ever known that they don’t have a name for it.

(He loved me.)

Jayde sat down. Her legs gave out — not dramatically, not collapsing, just the simple mechanical failure of a body that couldn’t hold itself up anymore. She sat on the cavern floor with Vael’kir across her knees and her hands wrapped around the warm black grip, and she stared at the dark red jewel, and she breathed.

(He loved me before I existed.)

Confirmed.

(He saw the pit. He saw all of it. He saw me eating scraps off the floor, and he saw me curled up in the dark, and he saw every single day, and he couldn’t — he couldn’t—)

He found another way.

(He found another way.)

The tears came. Not the kind she’d cried before — not the sharp, angry tears of the pit, or the exhausted tears of training, or the numb tears of the nights when she’d lain in the Pavilion and wondered why she was alive, and everyone she’d ever loved was dead. These were different. Quiet. Ugly. The full-body shaking tears of someone who had carried an absence their entire life and just had it filled by a voice from forty thousand years ago that called her daughter and meant it.

(I have a father.)

She’d known. Isha had told her, months ago, in the clinical way Isha delivered information — here is your heritage, here is what you are, here are the implications. She’d filed it. Understood it. Integrated it into the tactical picture, the way she integrated everything.

Jayde hadn’t felt it.

(He wanted me. He planned for me. He fought for me. He watched me suffer, and he couldn’t stop it, and he built a sword and hid it in a mountain and waited forty thousand years because that was the only thing he could do, and it was enough. It was more than enough. It was—)

She pressed her forehead against the flat of the blade. The runes pulsed warm. The jewel glowed, steady, patient, alive. And somewhere in the bond between sword and wielder — beneath the connection, beneath the soul-thread, beneath the mechanics of essence and magic and divine engineering — she felt something that wasn’t the sword spirit, wasn’t the blade itself, wasn’t anything she could name.

Warmth. Residual. An echo of the hands that had folded this metal and set these runes and chosen to make it teachable instead of indestructible because he’d believed in the girl who would one day find it.

Her father’s hands.

Jayde sat on the floor of a cavern at the bottom of the world, holding a sword made by a god who loved her, and she let herself be the child she’d never got to be. Not the commander from another life. Not the survivor. Not the tactical framework or the cover identity or the girl who’d learned to stop crying because crying attracted attention.

Just Jade. Seventeen and scared and alone and loved. Finally, terribly, impossibly loved.

She cried until there was nothing left. And then she sat in the silence and held the sword and breathed.

***

The blade vibrated.

Not the soul-bond hum. Something else — sharper, more deliberate, the vibration of a thing waking up after a very, very long sleep and discovering that it had opinions about its surroundings.

The jewel flared. Not the warm, patient glow of her father’s residual warmth — a brighter, crankier light, pulsing with the specific irritation of someone who had been rudely disturbed and intended to make that everyone’s problem.

And a voice. Not her father’s. Not essence-carried meaning, either — this was direct, mental, projected through the soul-bond with the precision of someone who had spent millennia perfecting the art of sounding disappointed.

”...So.”

A long pause.

”You are the one.”

He — and it was a he, unmistakably, in the way that certain kinds of ancient authority were unmistakably male — took a moment. The bond carried assessment. Jayde could feel him examining her through the connection — not her body, her everything. Essence. Cultivation. Core structure. Knowledge. History. Potential. The sword spirit was reading her the way a master craftsman reads raw material, and the results were clearly not encouraging.

”I was promised the greatest swordmaster who would ever live.”

Another pause. Longer. The jewel’s light flickered in a way that conveyed, with remarkable eloquence for a piece of crystal, profound disbelief.

”I have waited forty thousand years. I have prepared seven hundred and forty-three advanced techniques. A comprehensive training curriculum. A graduated assessment programme spanning nine phases and four hundred and twelve individual benchmarks.”

The assessment continued. She could feel him finding things. Her combat training from both lifetimes. Her experience with White. Her cultivation level. Her — everything.

A silence so absolute it made the cavern’s earlier quiet feel like a symphony.

”I see.”

(Is the sword... talking to me?)

Apparently.

”My name is Kazren. I was created to be your teacher. I have waited forty thousand years for you, and I will be honest — I expected more.”

Jayde was still sitting on the floor. Her eyes were still red. Her face was still wet. She was holding a divine weapon in a cavern at the end of the world, and a sword spirit was radiating disapproval at her like heat from a forge.

She almost laughed. She didn’t — but almost.

”Stand up.”

She stood.

”Show me what I have to work with.”

Jayde shifted her grip on Vael’kir. Adjusted her feet. Settled into the stance that White had drilled into her over months of brutal, unrelenting training — the best stance she had, refined by combat doctrine from another life and adapted for Doha’s essence-based combat framework.

Her best.

Kazren observed it through the bond. She could feel him examining each element. The foot placement. The hip angle. The grip. The line of the blade relative to her centre of gravity. Every detail catalogued with the thoroughness of someone who had literally nothing else to do for forty millennia but think about swordsmanship.

”...I see,” he said again. The two words somehow contained more disappointment than most people managed in entire speeches.

”Your teacher. The large man. He worked from a copy of a copy. An admirable effort, given what he had access to. Tragic, given what was lost.” A pause that carried the weight of genuine respect buried under forty thousand years of standards. ”His heart was correct. His technique was not. We shall have to burn it all away and start again.”

(He’s insulting White.)

He is offering a professional assessment. It happens to be insulting.

”You have three layers of contamination. Military precision that serves efficiency at the expense of artistry. A degraded sword form that teaches the shape of the blade without the soul of it. And underneath both of those, instinct — raw, untrained, rather good instinct, in fact — that neither of the other layers has managed to kill.”

The jewel’s light pulsed. Warmer now. Almost reluctantly.

”Perhaps the old man was not entirely wrong about you.”

The cavern shifted. Walls dissolved. The small, intimate space where her father’s voice had lived expanded — no, revealed itself — into something vast. An arena stretched in every direction, ringed by targets and training constructs standing in dormant rows, waiting. The pocket dimension showing its true purpose for the first time.

Everything her father had built, compressed into this space, waiting for the girl who would eventually find her way down a dark tunnel in a mountain and pick up a sword.

Kazren observed the space with the satisfaction of someone returning to a well-organised workspace.

”We begin now.”

”Now?” Her voice came out rough, scraped raw. ”I just — my father — I need a moment to—”

”You have had a moment. You have had several. Forty thousand years of moments have passed since I was placed here, and I assure you, I did not spend them weeping.”

(I think the sword is mad at me.)

I think the sword is mad at everything.

”The pocket dimension operates outside temporal flow. You have approximately one year of subjective time before the external anchor decays. At your current level—” The disapproval returned, fierce and bright. ”—we will need every second.”

Jayde looked at the arena. Looked at the sword. Looked at the faintly glowing jewel that was somehow, despite being a crystal embedded in metal, radiating the specific impatience of a professor whose star pupil had arrived late, unprepared, and crying.

She wiped her face with the back of her free hand. Adjusted her grip. Settled her weight.

(He waited forty thousand years for me.)

They both did. Father and the teacher.

(Then I’d better not waste it.)

”Stop thinking,” Kazren said, ”and start cutting. The stance is wrong. The grip is wrong. The angle is wrong. We will begin with how to hold a sword, because apparently that is where we are.”

A training construct lit up. Twenty paces away. Waiting.

”First position. Now.”

Jayde raised Vael’kir. The runes glowed red. The jewel watched.

She began.
