Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 245: Chapter 240: What We Carry

Location: Gateway Site — Eastern Valley, Hidden Village

Date/Time: 30 Ashwhisper → Void Day 2, 9938

AZI Realm: Mid Realm

They came in rivers.

Not single files or small groups — rivers of people pouring through the primordial forests along the hidden trails that connected eight hundred thousand lives to each other like arteries in a body that had never known it was alive. Families carrying everything they owned on their backs. Elders leaning on walking sticks carved from wood that had been in their families for generations. Children riding on shoulders or in wagons or running ahead with the terrible energy of the young who don’t understand that this is the last time their feet will touch this ground.

Lyria stood at the eastern ridge above the gateway site and watched them come.

The runners had done their work. Fifty-five settlements converging on a single point, moving through forest paths that would be erased behind them, timing their arrivals so the trails weren’t overwhelmed. Torvald’s logistics were holding — barely. His network of trail guides and scouts had spread across the region like a web, directing traffic, clearing blockages, carrying messages back and forth in a constant flow of coordination that ran on will and adrenaline and the knowledge that in fifteen days Sharlin’s shadow guard would find empty villages instead of children.

”Three hundred and twelve thousand confirmed on the move as of this morning,” Torvald said, joining her on the ridge. He looked like he’d aged ten years in ten days. ”Another four hundred thousand reporting departure. Roughly ninety thousand unaccounted for — deep interior settlements, remote homesteads, people who may not have received word.”

”Will they make it?”

”Some won’t.” Torvald’s voice was flat. Not cold — emptied. The voice of a man who’d calculated exactly how many people he couldn’t save and was carrying that number in his chest like a stone. ”The settlements past Greenveil Ridge are too far. Even with forced marching, they can’t reach the gateway in time. We’ve sent riders to redirect them to secondary rally points in case we can open a second crossing, but—”

”But there won’t be a second crossing,” Lyria finished.

”No. There won’t.”

Eight hours. One gateway. One chance.

Lyria looked down at the valley where the gateway was taking shape. Brannick’s forge had been running day and night for a week, the old mastersmith’s enormous hands shaping stabilisation matrices and anchor components with the precision of someone who’d had eight thousand years to perfect a craft that most races couldn’t comprehend. Beside him, Ren’s engineers worked through the common path — demon voices relayed through Voresh and the quintet, arguing about tolerances and power curves and structural specifications while Brannick grunted and corrected them and occasionally, grudgingly, acknowledged they had a point.

The gateway frame stood thirty feet high and fifty feet wide — a great arch of dark metal and crystal that hummed with contained essence. Kael’vor had shaped the stone foundation from living bedrock, sinking anchor points so deep they touched the roots of the mountains. Drazhen had forged the metal framework from raw ore, his Metallurge essence turning stone to steel to something harder than either. The twins had worked the thermal tempering — Zharek’s Inferno heating components to exact temperatures, Tharek’s Torrent cooling them in patterns that gave the metal a crystalline strength no conventional forge could achieve.

It wasn’t beautiful. It was functional. A doorway built to last eight hours, carry the weight of a civilisation, and then cease to exist.

The goodbyes started on the last day of Ashwhisper.

Not organised. Not ceremonial. They happened in the quiet spaces between the logistics — families standing in front of homes they’d lived in for generations, touching walls they’d built with their own hands, pulling doors shut for the last time with a gentleness that said more than weeping ever could.

Lyria walked through the hidden village in the early morning and watched it happen.

An elderly half-dwarf standing in his workshop, running his fingers over tool marks in the workbench. Each gouge and scratch a project completed, a repair made, a life maintained. He didn’t pack the tools. Just stood there. Touching the marks.

A woman kneeling in her garden, pressing seeds into soil she knew she’d never harvest. Planting anyway. Because gardens were hope, and hope didn’t die just because you left.

Children confused, excited, frightened — picking up stones from the stream and putting them in their pockets because a child’s instinct is to carry a piece of home with them, and stones don’t weigh much when you’re small.

Hessa arrived with Redoak’s evacuation column just before noon — five hundred people moving in disciplined order, the iron-grey elder at the front with her granddaughter Selka perched on her hip. Nine years old. Dark braids. The braids Hessa had taught her.

Hessa didn’t look back at the forest path behind her. Not once.

”How many?” she asked Torvald, setting Selka down with a firmness that said this child will not leave my sight.

”Over four hundred thousand arrived. Another three hundred thousand incoming by nightfall.”

”The gateway?”

”Tomorrow. Void Day three.”

Hessa nodded. Her face was stone. Had been stone since the conclave — since ninety seconds of shared vision had burned away the skepticism and left nothing but a grandmother who would walk through a door between worlds to keep one nine-year-old girl off a table.

”Good,” she said. ”I’ll organise the staging lines.”

She did. Within two hours, she’d turned chaos into order — people sorted by settlement, by mobility, by need. The slow and the sick at the front. The able-bodied at the rear. The fighters on the flanks. Hessa ran an evacuation the way she ran everything — like a woman who’d been preparing for exactly this her entire life and was furious that it had finally come.

Tharek found the children at sunset.

He hadn’t been looking for them. He’d been running perimeter with his twin — standard security sweep, marking the outer boundaries of the encampment that had swelled to fill the valley and spill up into the surrounding ridges. Eight thousand years of training kept his azure eyes scanning for threats, his Torrent essence monitoring moisture patterns for approaching bodies.

But the children found him.

A group of them — mixed-breed kids, maybe fifteen or twenty, ranging from toddlers to ten-year-olds. Playing some kind of game with sticks and a leather ball in a clearing between the tents. Running and shouting and tripping over each other with the magnificent clumsiness of children who haven’t yet learned that the world is dangerous.

Tharek stopped. Just for a moment.

He watched a girl — maybe six, dark hair, eyes that caught the last light of the setting sun with a flash of green-gold — tackle a boy twice her size for the ball and roll with him in the dirt, laughing. A baby-fine tracery of vine was just visible at her brow. The Shan’keth seed, newly sprouted. Uncovered. Unremarkable, here.

Eight thousand years ago, Tharek had been the last child born to the demon race.

He and Zharek. Twins. The final birth. After them — nothing. An entire civilisation that simply stopped producing the next generation. The nurseries went quiet. The cradles gathered dust. And year by year, century by century, the race that had once numbered in the hundreds of millions shrank around them like a lake drying in a drought.

Tharek had grown up knowing he was the last. Knowing that no child would come after him. Knowing that the laughter of demon children was something that had ended with him and his brother, and that the silence that replaced it would last forever.

He watched the girl with the green-gold eyes score whatever counted as a point, and the other children cheered, and the sound of it — the ordinary, unremarkable sound of children playing — hit him somewhere below his ribs with a force that had nothing to do with cultivation and everything to do with eight thousand years of silence.

There are children here.

Not demon children — not exactly. Mixed-blood. Diluted heritage. But the vines were there, and the eyes were there, and whatever thread of demon essence ran through these families had produced something the demon realm hadn’t seen in living memory.

Girls. Over a hundred of them. With the green-gold eyes.

The ball rolled to his feet. The girl with the vine-marked brow ran after it, skidded to a halt when she saw him — a seven-foot demon with azure eyes and blue-black hair and jade-white skin — and stared up at him with an expression that was more curiosity than fear.

”You’re one of the blue ones,” she said. ”Your brother’s red.”

Tharek’s throat closed.

”Yes,” he managed. ”He’s the red one.”

”Can you throw it back?”

He picked up the ball. Leather, badly stitched, stuffed with rags. The kind of ball that children made when they didn’t have real ones.

He threw it back gently. She caught it and ran, and the game resumed, and Tharek stood at the edge of the clearing with tears tracking down jade-white skin and his hand pressed over his heart like he was holding something in or holding something together, and he didn’t move until Zharek found him.

His twin took one look at his face. Looked at the children. Looked back.

Zharek’s crimson eyes went bright. His jaw worked. No words. Didn’t need them. Eight thousand years of shared everything — shared womb, shared childhood, shared knowledge that they were the end of the line — made the tears on Tharek’s face his own.

He put a hand on his brother’s shoulder. Tharek put a hand on his.

They stood there, two demons who’d been the last children, watching children play.

Kael’vor didn’t do sentiment.

Fifteen thousand years alive. Peak Apexblight. Verdant, Terracore, and Voidshadow. He was stone and root and shadow, and his role in any situation was to be the thing that didn’t move — the defensive anchor, the immovable point around which everything else could pivot.

So when Torvald’s staging system identified thirty-seven elders and disabled individuals who couldn’t walk the distance from the encampment to the gateway, Kael’vor volunteered the information that demons were considerably stronger than mixed-breeds and could carry what needed carrying.

Not sentiment. Logistics.

The first elder he lifted was a half-elven woman who’d been blind for forty years. She weighed almost nothing — bird bones and papery skin and a lifetime of stubbornness that had kept her alive in a world that had no use for her. When Kael’vor gathered her into his arms, she placed one small, weathered hand against his chest and said, ”Your heartbeat sounds like stone settling.”

”That’s the Terracore,” he said.

”It’s comforting,” she said. ”Like being carried by a mountain.”

Kael’vor carried her to the staging area. Set her down gently. Went back for the next one.

Then the next.

Then the next.

Twenty trips. Twenty elders and sick and wounded and too-young, gathered into arms that had been built for war and were learning, in this valley, that strength had other uses.

On the seventeenth trip, he carried a child — three years old, with a broken leg badly set, whimpering every time the jolt of walking shifted the bone. Kael’vor held him against his chest and let his Terracore essence seep into the contact point. Not healing — he wasn’t a healer. Stabilising. The way stone holds a cracked wall together. The way roots keep soil from washing away.

The child stopped whimpering. Looked up at him with enormous brown eyes. Put one small hand on Kael’vor’s jaw — the only part of his face the child could reach from that position.

”Mountain,” the child said.

Something shifted behind Kael’vor’s emerald eyes. He didn’t name it. Didn’t need to. Fifteen thousand years of defensive anchoring had taught him that some things didn’t need words. They just needed to be held.

Sethrak saw the woman on the morning of Void Day 1.

He’d been standing post — standard perimeter rotation, one of five Vor’shal warriors positioned around Vaelith’s morning healing station, where she tended the injured and exhausted among the arriving refugees. Sethrak’s assignment was the eastern approach. He’d held the position for six hours. His white hair — dulled to grey with age, the Galebreath that had once blazed bright now faded to ash — hung limp against shoulders that had been carrying weapons for thirty-two thousand years.

One leaf. One. On a vor’kesh that had once held more leaves than he could count. Thirty-two thousand years of feeling them fall, one by one, like seasons passing in a life that had long since stopped meaning anything except duty.

He saw her because she walked past his position.

A woman. Mixed-breed, indeterminate heritage — some human, some aetherwing, maybe something else. Dark hair with threads of gold. Mid-thirties. Carrying a basket of bandages to Vaelith’s station, walking with the brisk purpose of someone who had work to do.

The Shan’keth vine traced the left side of her face from brow to jaw. Uncovered. Visible. Green-black against warm skin, worn with the unselfconscious ease of someone who’d never been told to hide it.

Sethrak had seen the village women’s vines before. All the demons had. And all the demons had felt that particular, complicated response — the shock and the hope and the reminder of everything they’d lost. The vines were significant. Everyone knew that.

But this woman—

Something.

He couldn’t name it. Couldn’t categorise it. Something about the way she moved, or the angle of her jaw, or the thread of gold in her hair catching the morning light. Something that made his eye track her across the clearing instead of returning to his sector scan. Something that sat in his chest like a splinter — small, sharp, impossible to ignore.

His hand found his vor’kesh. Habit. He’d checked it every day for thirty-two thousand years, the way a dying man checks his own pulse — not hoping for change, just confirming the decline.

One leaf. Still one. Nothing had changed.

The woman reached Vaelith’s station. Set down the bandages. Exchanged a few words with the healer — practical, brief, efficient. Picked up an empty basket. Turned to leave.

Passed his position again.

And Sethrak’s eye followed her again, and the splinter in his chest sat a little deeper, and he didn’t understand why.

He filed it. The way a thirty-two-thousand-year-old warrior filed anything that didn’t have a tactical explanation — noted, categorised as unresolved, set aside. There was an exodus to protect. A gateway to guard. Eight hundred thousand people who needed every one of his remaining days to survive the next forty-eight hours.

He returned to his sector scan.

But the splinter stayed.

***

Void Day 2 dawned grey and cold.

The five days between years — the liminal time, the space between Ashwhisper’s end and Emberrise’s beginning. Time outside normal flow. In the Radiant cities, the Void Days were festivals. In the primordial forests, they were just more cold.

But this year, the time between times would be the time they walked between worlds.

The gateway hummed.

Brannick stood before it, his enormous hands clasped behind his back, studying the arch with the critical eye of a mastersmith evaluating the most important thing he’d ever built. The metal and crystal framework pulsed with a deep, rhythmic glow — the contained essence of a hundred demon warriors channelled through stabilisation matrices of Brannick’s design, held in check by anchor points sunk into bedrock by Kael’vor’s Terracore mastery.

”Tomorrow,” he said. To no one in particular. ”Void Day three. Dawn.”

Behind him, the valley was full. Eight hundred thousand people — give or take the thousands who hadn’t made it, the settlements too remote, the individuals too old or too sick or too stubbornly rooted to leave — packed into the hidden village and the surrounding forest like a river dammed behind a wall.

Lyria stood with Voresh at the ridge overlooking the gateway. Below them, the staging lines stretched back through the valley in ordered columns — Hessa’s work, maintained by Torvald’s guides and reinforced by the discipline of people who understood that order meant survival and chaos meant children crushed underfoot.

”Eight hours,” Lyria said.

”Eight hours,” Voresh confirmed. ”Fifty abreast. We’ve calculated the throughput — at a steady walking pace, we can move approximately sixty thousand per hour. Eight hours gives us four hundred and eighty thousand.”

”That’s not eight hundred thousand.”

”No. Which is why the pace will be faster than walking and the line will be wider than fifty at the broader sections. The engineers have adjusted the aperture — Brannick’s modifications allow a wider gateway than the original design. We’ll move closer to seven hundred thousand in eight hours.” He paused. ”The remainder will be carried.”

Lyria looked at him. ”Carried?”

”The Kael’thoren.” Voresh nodded toward the demon warriors who’d been a silent, dark-armored presence throughout the entire operation — a hundred elite soldiers who’d spent ten days building, hauling, guarding, and saying nothing. ”Each one can carry four to six people at full speed. They’ll sweep the rear, gather anyone who can’t keep pace, and move them through.”

The logistics of saving a civilisation. Numbers and throughput and load calculations, all aimed at the singular purpose of getting every last person through a door that would exist for eight hours and then never exist again.

”The villages will be empty,” Lyria said. Not a question. A realisation, arriving fully formed like a vision she hadn’t asked for. ”Everything we built. Everything the generations before us built. Gone.”

Voresh was quiet for a moment. His copper eyes looked out over the valley — at the homes built into hillsides, at the gardens still growing, at the terraced streets where children had played yesterday and would never play again.

”Not gone,” he said. ”Carried. In the people who walk through tomorrow.”

Lyria leaned into his side. The bond pulsed between them — warm, steady, the three strands braided tight. Tomorrow, everything would change. Tomorrow they’d walk between worlds.

Tonight, she just wanted to stand here and remember what it felt like before.
